Soyeon greeted the nurses she saw every day at the front desk who smiled back.

"Right on time. He finished his breakfast an hour ago so you can take him out if you want."

"Thank you!"

Soyeon took light steps down the white hall, humming.

Most people didn't like hospitals because it was quiet and smelled funky but Soyeon was so greatful to come every day. The hospital was where her boyfriend of three years slept, ate, and laughed. Soyeon wouldn't miss a single opportunity to visit.

Soyeon jumped in front of the door with Kihyun's name on it, landing softly with both feet. She slid it open and ran inside.

"Kihyun!"

Kihyun looked up from his book. "Hey." He opened his arms and she ran to give him a tight hug.

"Ah, you're going to break me if you hug me any stronger."

Soyeon immediately let go, apologizing. "Look what I brought!" She lifted up a pink party bag.

"Let me guess, more books?"

Soyeon beamed and opened the bag to show him all the books she picked up the day before. "I even got the one you were looking for." She held up The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom.

Kihyun's eyes twinkled. "You're the best, Soyeon. Now I won't be bored for another week whenever you're not here."

Soyeon smiled and set the bag down before climbing onto the bed and under the white sheets, snuggling next to him. He wrapped his arms around her and sighed in bliss. He always felt content with her in his arms.

Soyeon's smile slowly faded when she put her head on his chest, facing the wall in front of them.

Ever since Kihyun got diagnosed with osteosarcoma, he rejected his scholarship to Sungkyunkwan University and practically lived in the hospital. The day he got diagnosed, he was out with his friends playing soccer when a sudden pain in his knee shot him down. That was a year ago.

The doctors tried their best and were still trying to prevent the cancer cells from spreading all over his body but Kihyun knew that they wouldn't be able to. Kihyun was a rare case. His cells were growing rapidly, at a speed that was rare, according to the sites he asked online.

Soyeon also knew that Kihyun lost hope, but that didn't stop her from coming to see him every day. She would do whatever it takes to lift his mood and make every single day special for him.

She frowned when she felt his boney body in her arms. His arms were thinner than before. Even his legs under the blanket. They were almost as thin as hers now.

Soyeon pushed the bad thoughts away and sat up. "Do you want to go outside?"

The doctors allowed Kihyun to spend time outside at least once day to clear his mind. They usually didn't to patients who had stage four cancer but Soyeon begged them to let her.

Soyeon pushed Kihyun's wheelchair outside. She pushed him around the garden several times before stopping at a bench to talk.

Kihyun smiled, his day getting much better, as he watched her talk about her new classes and friends while smiling.

Soyeon knew something was wrong when she walked into Kihyun's ward that morning.

Kihyun wasn't reading his book like usual. The Five People You Meet In Heaven was on the nightstand with a bookmark poking out near the end of it.

"Hey."

Kihyun turned his head away from the window. "Hey," he replied softly.

Soyeon set her bag down on the chair in the corner of the room. She tried not to stare but she couldn't help it. Kihyun looked horrible, and that's sugarcoating it.

His eyes were sunken, his skin pale, his lips blue. His collarbone was protruding out so much that she was afraid it would break his skin.

Kihyun must have felt her stare. "Come here."

Soyeon sat down next to him. He held her hands, which were hot compared to his, and weakly smiled. "Can you do me a favor?"

"What is it?" She was afraid of the answer.

"Don't come tomorrow."

"What? No."

Kihyun squeezed her hands but it felt like a soft flinch in her hands. "You should take a break. Go visit your family or go out with your friends. I don't want you staying in this small room every day having to see my ugly face-"

"You're far from ugly." Soyeon cupped his face and gently rubbed his ears, her fingers brushing against the soft fabric of his beanie.

"Please? I'm starting to think I'm not getting better because I want to see you every day," he joked.

Liar. You can see me every day even if you weren't sick.

Soyeon wanted to say no. She wanted to tell him that she'd never miss a day coming to see him but she looked at his pleading eyes and softened. "Okay."

A smile appeared on his face. "Thanks." He picked up the book by his side. "I'm almost done with the book. It's good. You should read it. I'll probably be done with it tomorrow."

Tomorrow.

"I'll read it."

Soyeon chewed her finger nails as she stood outside the hospital. Kihyun's words replayed in her head but she just felt that something was wrong. She decided to trust her gut and walked inside.

The nurses greeted her with stiff smiled. One of the nurses didn't even look at her. Their unusual greetings made the upset feeling in her stomach grow.

Soyeon ran to Kihyun's ward and slid the door open. She gasped when his bed was empty. She walked in, her footsteps heavy, and looked around the room. Everything was in place except for the book.

It was on the floor.

Soyeon picked it up. Something dropped onto the floor. She picked the small piece of paper up and opened it. Her eyes pricked with tears when she recognized Kihyun's writing.

"The man meets five people who made a great impact in his life. I was thinking about who I would meet and the only person I could think of was you, Soyeon. You made my days brighter, my nights warmer, and my heart bigger. You showed me how to live even when dying. I'm so greatful to have called you mine. I hope I was a big part of yours too. See you in heaven. I'll be waiting."

Teardrops blotted the ink. Soyeon collapsed on the floor, her sobs echoing through the halls outside. He knew. He knew he was going to...

Soyeon clutched the book and letter to her chest as she cried out his name.

Soyeon held the book close to her heart as the funeral ended. She walked up to his smiling photo, a tear streaming down her left cheek, and smiled. "I read the book. It was good. Thanks for recommending it."

"I didn't get to say a couple of things but I'm sure you can hear me from where you are," she said while fiddling with the flower in her hand. "I'll make sure to come back soon.

She set a single white carnation down before walking away.

I love you.
