Every year, six people are chosen to be sacrificed to the sun god. The people chosen are usually people with illnesses or disabilities because they aren't going to live as long as the others who have to carry on the human race. This has been going on ever since Sayoon could remember.

And now it was her turn.

"You can't live like this forever, Sayoon. You can't keep hiding like this. The consequences will be worse if they catch you, and you know that. I don't want to see you going through that so please, just think about it one more time."

Sayoon sighed on the middle of her twin sized bed while looking up at the ceiling. What her brother said was right. She should just reveal her illness and go. She's always wanted to tell the government because she would feel guilty every time a person with a disability went instead of her.

She should have been the one going, not someone who had the potential to at least get better. But Sayoon? She had less than a year to live. If I get caught... Sayoon shuddered at the thought of the pit.

But everytime Sayoon was on her way to reveal her sickness, her heart would stop her. She couldn't just leave Hongbin behind. He'd be devastated. She cursed fate for giving her lung cancer. But she couldn't do anything now. She sighed even louder and rolled to her side.

"Is something wrong?" Sayoon quickly got up from the bed and looked at the door. Her boyfriend was standing there with her favorite drink from the cafe down the street in his hand. She forced a smile on her face and shook her head. "I was just bored."

Believing her, Hongbin smiled and walked over to hand over the drink he was holding. "And that is why I'm here. With an iced soy green tea latte, just how you like it." Sayoon's heart fluttered but her mind was telling her to stop. How can I leave him? He's so nice to me.

"I don't want to break your heart." Sayoon muttered under her breath. "What?" Hongbin looked at her with an innocent face.

Her eyes widened as she shook both of her hands in front of her. "Nothing!" She cleared . "It's nothing. I was just talking to myself."

Hongbin noticed she was acting a little strange but he waved it off. "Hey, why don't we go to the park by the lake? We haven't been there in a while." Sayoon nodded. "Great! I'll be outside, waiting." He stood up to go but turned around. "Dress warm. It's getting chilly outside." Sayoon gave him an 'okay' sign and urged him to go out so she could change.

Tears ran down her face immediately after he left through the front door. I'm sorry, Hongbin but I can't continue hiding like this.

Holding hands, they strode down the sidewalk by the lake before settling down on a bench. Hongbin looked up at the trees. "Wow, I guess winter is going to be super cold this year. The trees are still pretty though, huh?" Sayoon didn't respond. Something else was on her mind.

Ignoring Hongbin's question, Sayoon looked out at the water and watched the ducks play. "They look so free, the ducks. I wish I was a duck." Hongbin chuckled at her randomness. "They do. But I wouldn't want to be like them."

"Why not?" Hongbin turned to gaze into Sayoon's almond brown eyes. "Because then I wouldn't have been able to meet you." Instead of teasing him for his cheesiness as she always did, Sayoon started to get teary eyed.

Alarmed, Hongbin quickly shifted closer to her. "Did I say something wrong? Don't cry." He raised his hand to wipe away a tear that slid down her cheek but she slightly backed away from his touch. Hongbin stared at her and his empty hand with wide eyes. Sayoon slowly shook her head and wiped her own tears away.

"Hongbin. Let's stop this." Hongbin's expression visibly shadowed at her statement. "What?" His question came out as a whisper. Sayoon looked into Hongbin's eyes and stated it confidently.

"I'm breaking up with you, Hongbin. We're over."

Hongbin, in disbelief, scoffed at her statement. "You're kidding." Sayoon shook her head. "I've been thinking about it for a while now. And I just don't feel the same anymore." Hongbin furrowed his eyesbrows and shook his head. "I don't understand."

"I don't like you anymore, Lee Hongbin."

Hongbin's disbelief changed into anger in a matter of seconds. "Is that why you said you wanted to be a duck? So that you could be free instead of having to be with me?"

Sayoon didn't respond as she kept a pokerface on. But on the inside, she was crying.

"How could you do this to me? After all that we've been through." Hongbin scoffed again but tears were visible in his eyes. He quickly got up before sighing. "Fine. I'll let you go."

Sayoon shut her eyes. No, don't let me go. Say that you won't ever let me go.

"I'll grant you your wish. You're free now, Jung Sayoon."

Don't grant me my wish. Don't set me free. I don't want to leave you behind.

"But just remember, Jung Sayoon." His voice was soft again. "I will always love you. Even if you don't feel the same anymore, you'll always be in my heart."

Sayoon broke down into tears and reached out for Hongbin but it was too late. He was already walking away.

"I'll always love you too, Lee Hongbin."

Sayoon got home past midnight. As soon as she entered the front door, Taekwoon jumped up from the couch and scolded her. "Where were you, Jung Sayoon? You can't just stay out late like this anymore. Do you know how worried I was? Who knows what could have hap-"

He stopped when he noticed her red, puffy eyes. His cold eyes narrowed before turning soft, realizing what she had gone through. "Come here." Taekwoon pulled her in and wrapped his arms around her.

Immediately, Sayoon burst into tears. Taekwoon calmed her down while gently rubbing her hair. "Sh, it's okay Sayoon. You did a good job."

I know it's hard, Sayoon. I know I kept on saying that you should reveal it, but now I regret it. I don't want to lose you either.

Taekwoon shut his eyes and forced his tears away as he continued to comfort his baby sister.
