“Seriously, my shift will be over within five minutes and you’re giving me this now?” You said, trying to keep the annoyance from dripping off your voice, but it didn’t really seem to work. Your colleague sent you an apologetic look and even though you knew it wasn’t her fault, there was no one else in the room for you to pick on. You looked down on the documents on top of your desk and wished you could make them magically disappear. “I’m sorry, but mister Jung asked me to bring these to you. He said he wants them finished as fast as possible.” That added even more fuel to the fire and you felt your face wrinkle as you leaned back against your chair and crossed your arms across your chest. It wasn’t like you could tell him to back off and take care of his own problems. He was your boss, and if he told you to do something you didn’t have much of a different choice than to do as he asked. But it wasn’t a secret that he was getting on your nerves. The past few months he had been giving you tasks and had been keeping you late at the office. When you’d asked him about his motive he’d told you that as a new employee he wanted to test your loyalty for the company and he wanted you to prove yourself. Back then he’d even tried to make it sound as if he was doing you a favor, but you were way over that thought. He was trying to annoy you, giving you all the extra work even though you didn’t get payed any more than the others who worked here did.

The question was, how loyal were you? You knew that with your degree you could find another job in no time. You’d have to start back from zero, but right now even that sounded better than having to deal with all this . You weren’t someone’s maid, who jumped every time someone needed your help. You didn’t apply to this job only to be someone slave and to solve their little problems because they were too lazy to do it themselves, and that was exactly what this was, there wasn’t anything encouraging about this. Your female colleague, you were quite convinced her name was Sarah, but you weren’t sure, cleared in front of you. When you eyed her you were sure she could see every thought that was traveling your mind written all over your face. At this point she probably didn’t know who she should be more afraid of, your boss or you. Forcing yourself to keep your cool you breathed in deeply, hoping that the adrenaline that was rushing through your veins would disappear. It wasn’t like you’d always had this much of a temper, usually you were a very good wooded person. But time was starting to take out on you, and the more weeks passed the moodier your became. It wasn’t anyone’s fault, not in particular. The thing was, you missed your boyfriend, a lot. The moment he'd let you know that he really wanted to join the military and he wanted to protect and serve his country, you’d actually been excited. You wanted him to do something that gave him purpose and that gave him satisfaction. What you hadn’t thought about back then was that you’d have to miss him for so long.

It had been nearly two years, and even though you knew he would come back really soon and the time you’d have to be by yourself was almost over, it didn’t help to enlighten you. No, instead it made you feel even more frustrated, because you were so nervous that he was almost returning home. You shouldn’t be nervous, he was your boyfriend, you’d known him for years and you loved him. But somehow you guessed you were scared that now that he’d been gone for so long and you had both lived without each other for such a long period of time, that you would have grown tired of each other. What if he didn’t fit in your life style anymore? You’d accepted this job after he’d left and even though when you’d called him and you had told him about it, he’d sounded very excited and happy for you, you had no idea how this was going to work out. Things had changed since he left. And you were sure that this experience had changed him too. He’d seen things, experienced things, been through things that you could impossibly understand. What if you two had different minds and opinions now? Would it still work? That, together with the fact that you were just thrilled for him to come back to you, made that you were almost impossible to handle. You drove your parents crazy, that while you didn’t even live with them anymore and your friends treated you like a ticking time bomb, ready to explode any minute. And the last thing you needed right now, was this stupid file, with extra work, that didn’t belong to you. This wasn’t even your job, you weren’t supposed to be dealing with financial, you at financials.

For a second you thought about getting out of your chair, and marching towards his office. You would knock on the door, burst in and shove the papers under his nose with the message for him to go screw himself. seriously, you could imagine it. But somehow your seemed glued onto your chair. No matter how much you hated this, you loved this job, and the money. You loved your desk, you loved your colleagues, you loved the view from the large window behind you. There was no way you could give this up over a stupid file. So you plastered a forced smile onto your face and thanked the girl who actually seemed to be named Gia, like seriously, how did you even get to think her name was Sarah and you got into it. For half an hour you did nothing different than rumbling through the pages, trying to understand what was written down there. Only to get to the conclusion that you didn’t have the slightest clue. People around you were leaving, their desk blanket out for the night as you sat there with your fists in your hair. You ignored the phone that was obviously buzzing inside of your purse and refused to give in on the need you felt to chew on your pencil. This wasn’t going to work, you wouldn’t be able to finish this in years, leave alone as fast as possible. There couldn’t be any other explanation for him to give this to you other than that he just wanted to ruin your life a little bit more. Though you had to admit, it was working. You felt even more miserable than you had felt this morning, and you hadn’t even thought that was still possible. Life never seemed to fail to amaze you.

The sound of the elevator moving at the end of the hallway caught your attention and you closed your eyes in frustration as you thought about that person, who was going home to enjoy their free evening before they’d have to return tomorrow. How much you wished your were one of those people. You frowned when you heard the sound of the doors sliding open, followed by the sound of footsteps. Who was stupid enough to return towards the office during this time of the day? Why would they risk being stuck up here as well? Curiosity took over you and you dropped your pencil onto your wooden desk, officially deciding that you were giving up on this. You could read these documents over a hundred times, but that wasn’t going to change anything. This. Was. Not.
