Down the memory lane

I'm Different

Junhyung’s POV

“S..S..So..?” I asked, breaking the silence.

She said she wanted to tell me something, but for the past five minutes, she was just staring at her hands. She sighed and pouted slightly.

“For what I said just now, I’m sorry.” I said.

She shook her head.

“You’re right.” She said.

What did she mean?

“You’re right in thinking that I might be lying to you.” She said, looking at me with a forced smile.

“Don’t go.” I said, grabbing her wrist.

“I'll tell you everything.” She said.

“Tell me what?” I asked.

“Anything you want to know.” She said.

“You’re not leaving?” I asked.

She just smiled and headed for the door.

“Where are you going!?” I ran after her.

“You want to know stuff, right? Do you think just by telling you, you would be able to picture it?” She said.

“Dry your hair!” I said, handing her the towel.

“The wind will dry it.” She said, throwing the towel onto the table.

“Aish why are you so stubborn!?” I yelled.

She stopped and turned to face me. Did I say something wrong?

“I have always been like this, since day one. Remember that.” She said, poking my chest.

***

“Why are we in school?” I asked her.

“Shh~” She said as she walked.

“You said you would tell me everything.” I said.

She looked at me and I knew I should shut up. I followed closely behind her. We arrived at the auditorium.

“I remember this place.” I mumbled.

She looked at me with raised brow.

“Sure you do.” She said, pushing the door open.

It was empty. We went in and sat down. She sat at the last row while I sat at where I always sat.

“We were classmates?” I turned back to ask her.

She nodded once.

“Oh~” I mumbled.

I looked around the class, trying to recall the slightest memory of her, but nothing came out. I grew tired from all that pointless thinking. I might as well ask her.

“So how did we become…” My voice trailed off when I heard the sound of a door close.

Where did she go? Why am I all alone?

“Haneul!?” I shouted, running to the back door, but it was locked.

How could she just leave me in here!?

I ran to the front door instead. I tried to pull it open, but it was locked as well.

“ANYONE OUTSIDE!? OPEN THE DOOR FOR ME PLEASE!!!” I shouted, banging onto the door.

The lights went off suddenly, causing me to jump up in shock.

“YAH!!!! PLEASE OPEN THE DOOR FOR ME!!!” I shouted.

What is this? She said she would tell me everything, but not only did she not say a single word, she left me here all alone!?

“HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!” I screamed till my voice went off.

“Aghhhhh!!!” I banged onto the door.

I tried to turn on the lights, but I couldn’t find the switch.

“Someone!! Anyone!! Haneul!!!” I screamed.

I was breathless from panicking and yelling. When I stopped to catch my breath, the door clicked open. The light from outside shone in, blinding me for awhile. I shook my head to adjust myself to the light. An image flash passed my mind, but I couldn’t make it out.

When I opened my eyes again, Haneul was standing in front of me, arms across her chest.

“Why did you lock me inside?” I asked.

“This is how we met.” She said coldly.

“You mean you locked me inside the first time we met? It was you?” I asked.

She walked off without answering me. I followed behind her, not wanting to get ditch off by her again.

***

“Why are we here?” I asked, looking around.

We were at the back of the school. There was no one and nothing here. She sat down behind one of the huge trees. I sat down as well despite the fact it was pretty dirty to sit on the grass.

“Why are we here?” I asked again.

“Didn’t you say you want to know? This place is where we always hang out during our breaks.” She said.

She rested her head against the truck of the tree and looked up into the sky. I had many questions I want to ask her, but I doubt she would answer any. I sat down beside her, looking up at the sky as well, but from time to time, I would find myself glancing at her. She is beautiful, but at the same time, there was a hint of loneliness that lingered around that beauty of hers.

I lost myself staring at her when she suddenly turned over, glaring at me.

“Sor.. Sorry. Sorry.” I said, looking away.

“Do you remember how you ended up in the hospital?” She asked.

“Wha.. What?” I asked, taken aback by her sudden question.

“Do you remember how you ended up in the hospital?” She asked again.

“I got into a fight with those bullies.” I said.

“So you remember~” I think I heard her mumble.

“What kind of couple were we?” I asked.

“You got to figure that out for yourself.” She said.

“But you said you would tell me everything!” I said, stomping my foot.

She turned to look at me, and then started giggling.

Is she giggling? She looks even more beautiful when she is smiling. This is the first time I see her smile, not the mocking kind, but the genuine one.

“How old are you? Three?” She asked, pinching my cheek lightly.

“You said you would tell me.” I pouted.

“I would bring you to places, but you got to piece the pieces back together yourself. If I were to tell you everything, then it’s not called regaining memory anymore, it’s just called constructing another story.” She said.

“But what if I don’t remember?” I asked.

“Then.. I guess.. It’s good bye?” She said, looking away.

But I don’t want her to leave. I cannot remember her, but something inside me is yelling at me to keep her by my side. Her statement hurt me.

Before I could say anything, she stood up.

“Let’s go. I’ll bring you somewhere else.” She said.

“But it’s getting late.” I said.

“Exactly because it’s getting late that’s why we have to go there.” She said.

“Where is it?” I asked.

“The bookstore.” She said.

“What bookstore? What sort of bookstore opens till so late?” I asked.

She looked at me, a wave of disappointment flashed across her face.

“You.. don’t even.. remember the.. bookstore?” She asked.

“Am I supposed to remember it? Is it very important?” I asked, genuinely not knowing.

She nodded and walked off.

“Wait for me!” I grabbed my stuff and hurried behind her.

“Can you stop walking away without me!?” I yelled.

“Can you start walking faster!?” She yelled.

She suddenly started power walking. I ran behind her, yelling for her to stop but she just ended up walking faster.

“YAH!!!” I shouted.

She turned back and stuck out her tongue at me. She started running. I chased her but she was so fast that I couldn’t really see where she was going.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!” I heard a familiar voice scream. It sounded like Haneul. Did something happen to her!?

I looked around to look for her. A sudden weight crashed onto my back, startling me. I turned around. She grabbed onto my arms, burying her face into my chest, trembling badly.

“What is it?! What happened!?” I asked, trying to calm her down.

She pointed behind anxiously. I looked behind her and saw two cats meowing at us.

This scene seems familiar.

“HURRRRRRRRRRRR!!” She cried, snapping me out of my thoughts.

“It’s just cats!” I laughed.

“THEY ARE MONSTERS!!!” She shouted back.

“They are really nice animals.” I said.

“No! AHHHHHHHHH!!!” She jumped onto me, clinging onto me for her dear life as one of the cat walked towards us.

“Alright, alright. Shhh~” I laughed.

How could someone so fierce be afraid of cats?

“ASK THEM TO GO AWAY!!!!!!!!!” She screamed.

I had a hard time trying to shoo the cats away. I had to calm Haneul while trying to get rid of the cats.

“ARE THEY GONE!?” She shouted.

“Yes, yes. Calm down. They are gone.” I said, her back.

She turned behind to look really slowly, as thou afraid I would lie to her.

“They are gone, aren’t they?” I said, pushing her hair out of her face.

She nodded slightly.

“Silly girl.” I laughed.

She pouted and pushed me away, walking off on her own, again.

“You don’t want to walk alone here. There are a lot of cats in this area.” I said.

She froze and stared at me blankly.

“You need my protection.” I smiled.

“What did you say?” She asked.

“You need my protection.” I repeated.

“Do you remember something?” She asked, cupping my cheeks.

I looked at her confused. This scene is indeed familiar, but there’s nothing.

She sighed and let go of me.

“It’s okay.” She mumbled, walking off.

“You really don’t want to walk alone here!” I said, grabbing her hand, pulling her closer to me.

She snuggled closer to me, holding my arm real tight.

I had no images in my head whatsoever, but I felt a really heartwarming feeling in my heart when she is close to me.

Chapter 208: Finally! I've read everything. It was ultimately satisfying. No regrets reading it for a long time even though I stopped at the very last chapters but I managed to finished it. I love everything in this story. The plot, the characters and so on. Their quirkiness and childishness always make me smiles and laughs most of the time. It makes my day at how ridiculous the characters are. However, it never fails to teach me the lessons of life and how important are the families including non-blood relation. It makes to appreciate yet enjoy the content as well. Yes, I agree with you that the ending was already perfect as it was. :D Despite the chapters are unbearably long, it was entertaining and well done. Love your story! ♥
