Guilt
I'm DifferentHaneul’s POV
Junhyung and I exchanged glances.
“Sorry, but what is this about? He is still not very fit as you can see. I can give you whatever information you ask for.” I said.
“We just need awhile from him, to ask him some questions and to clarify some things.” One of the officers said.
I looked at Junhyung. He nodded in approval.
“Can she… stay?” Junhyung asked the officer.
“Sure. As you wish.” He said.
Junhyung gestured me to sit beside him. I sat next to him, holding his hand under the blanket.
“Do you know her?” The officer asked, showing Junhyung a photograph of her.
Junhyung nodded.
“You do?” I asked.
“Come to think… of it, I do.” He said.
The police waited for his explanation.
“She… was always around. I never paid… much attention. But I pretty much… saw her around… most of the times. I did not… give much thought… thinking she’s just some… fan. Before I met Haneul… I was bullied… in school as… usual. A couple of times… I saw someone… help me… secretly. I think it… was her.” Junhyung said.
“Uh huh~” The officer waited.
“But she never once… appeared in front of me. She was always… sneaking around somewhere. I used to… notice. Sometimes when… our eyes meet… I’ll smile. But ever since Haneul… I never seem to… notice her.. anymore.” Junhyung continued.
“Do you know about the CCTVs installed in your dorm?” He asked.
Junhyung looked at me, and then back at them. He shook his head.
“We found about eight CCTVs installed in your dorm.” The officer said.
There was a knock on the door and then the rest of Beast strolled in, chattering. They stopped when they noticed the police.
“Oh.. Erm.. Are we… disturbing something here?” Doojoon asked.
“Can… they?” Junhyung asked.
“Sure. It involves all of you, actually.” The officer gestured them in.
“What’s going on?” Doojoon asked.
“We found eight CCTVs installed in your dorm.” The officer repeated.
All five of them had the same expression; wide eyes, dropped jaws.
The officer took out a laptop from somewhere and playback a few videos. Some were them showering, some were them sleeping and so on. Audible gasps filled the room. Junhyung looked down. His grip on my hand tightened.
“How…?” Hyunseung mumbled.
“We interrogated her. She confessed everything, surprisingly. She managed to get the password to your dorm. She did most of the work when you guys were overseas.” The officer explained.
“Apparently, she got her hands on your schedules and everything in full details. She has been stalking you guys, especially you, Junhyung sshi, for quite some time. She did such a good job that you guys did not even realize.” He continued.
“Does this mean… we have been living under her watch for… so long?” Yoseob asked no one in particular.
“I am afraid so.” He said.
“I’m… so sorry.” Junhyung said softly.
He was looking down, but we all knew whom he was apologizing too.
“Junnie, it’s not your fault.” Doojoon said.
“Have you seen this before?” The police asked as he took out a piece of paper from the folder.
It was a marriage certificate. Her name as well as Junhyung’s was written on it, except her side was signed and Junhyung’s side wasn’t.
Junhyung shook his head.
“I… I did not..”He said to me.
I nodded, assuring him.
“We would like you to recognize some things.” The officer gestured the other.
He pulled out three boxes from the side. All of us bend over to take a look. The first box contained the photo albums she proudly showed me that day.
Junhyung picked up one of the photo albums. I tried to stop him but he opened it anyway. He looked thru the photos, the other members standing behind him, looking and cringing as well. He shut the book and tossed it to the side.
“Are you okay?” I asked, caressing his back.
He nodded slightly. He continued looking thru everything else. He opened the second box. It contained some of his shirts, his boxers, empty Coke cans and whatever rubbish he threw out. He sighed and looked down.
“We found this in the house that day.” The police explained.
“Are these yours?” He asked.
Junhyung stared at the stuff, his face pale, not saying anything.
“I think it’s enough. He’s not well. Please.” I said. The other boys nodded in agreement too.
“I’m fine.” Junhyung insisted.
He flipped open the other box. He stared blankly at it, so did all of us. It was the box of used pads. The police turned to look away. Dongwoon shut the box and kicked it aside.
“Enough. Please.” I said.
“Yong Junhyung sshi, thank you for your time.” One of the officers said.
“The kids… Who do they… belong to?” Junhyung asked.
“They are hers, but the fathers… we’re unsure. But they have different fathers. She insisted that they were yours, but we did a DNA to confirm.” One of them said.
“Is it.. possible not to.. charge her?” Junhyung asked.
We turned to look at him.
“We can’t, even if we wanted to.” He said, smiling apologetically.
“Why?” I asked.
“She… committed suicide in her room in the mental institution yesterday.”
I felt Junhyung’s body lean against mine. I held onto him.
“But she left this for you.” He said, handing Junhyung a folded piece of paper.
“I’m sorry.” The officer apologized before heading out. The other boys stepped out too, leaving Junhyung and I alone.
“Junroro… are you… OH MY GOD!” He bend over, puking. I grabbed the trash bin as quickly as possible but I couldn’t prevent him from puking some onto the floor and over my hand. I was disgusted, but I didn’t have time for it. I pat his back as he vomited.
“Are you okay?” I asked, wiping his mouth.
He nodded.
“I’ll be back okay?” I said.
He nodded.
I got someone to clean the floor and take away the trash bin while I go wash my hands. I came back to find him staring into space.
“Sorry.” He mumbled.
“For what?” I asked.
“Dirtied your hand.” He said.
“Silly or what?” I pinched his cheek lightly, sitting beside him.
He just smiled. I waited for him to say something, but he did not. I called the boys in to keep him company. They stayed for a while, talking about everything else except those. They took everything back.
“Are you hungry? Want some food?” I asked him.
He shook his head. He gestured me to sit beside him. He leaned against my shoulder, putting his hand on my belly.
“Are you alright?” I asked, his arm lightly.
“Hi, Baby~” He said, changing the subject.
He spent the next hour talking to my belly and playing with the Donald and Daisy duck plushies.
I let him be, knowing that if he wants to talk, he would.
He fell asleep awhile later. I let him lie down as gently as possible, not interested in waking him up at all. I drew the curtains to keep the room dark.
“You’ll be fine.” I whispered, planting a soft kiss on his forehead.
I lied on the couch, caressing my belly.
“What should we do with Daddy?” I asked.
“He’s so sad. It makes me sad too. You’re sad too, aren’t you?” I said.
I slowly drifted off into sleep myself as I watch him sleep. I literally jumped when I heard something crash onto the floor.
“Junroro!?” I called out, drawing the curtains for light.
I saw a spilled cup of water on the floor. I looked at Junhyung. He was biting his index finger so hard there was an obvious teeth mark.
“Stop it!” I pulled his finger away from his mouth.
He looked at me. He held onto my arms with trembling hands.
“Haneul…” He called out in a shaky voice.
I pulled him into a tight hug.
“Shh.. Don’t say anything.” I whispered.
“Just close your eyes.” I said, caressing his back.
“I can’t… Haneul.. I.. I can’t.” He said.
“Why?” I asked.
“I.. I feel like a… murderer. Lionny… I feel like… I murdered her.” His voice trembled. He broke into soft sobs.
“Junroro, you have to know that none of these is your fault.” I said softly.
“It is…” He insisted.
“It’s not. How is it your fault?” I asked.
“Don’t you see.. it? If I noticed her.. earlier.. I could.. have told her.. to stop. She got.. so close you… so close to.. killing you.. I let it happen… Don’t you see? And now… she killed herself… because of me. How is it… not my fault?” He said in between his sobs.
“What am I… going to tell… Tae Hyun and.. Ji Eun? Their mother… committed suicide… because of me…” He continued.
“And because of me… our members have been.. living under camera… It is so… humiliating.. I took away their… privacy… If not because of me… none of this would have happened.” He said.
“She did everything… because of me. And I… I can’t even.. apologize.” He cried.
I understood what he meant. I felt bad too. We were close, at least for a while. I always brushed off her actions as overly obsessed with Junhyung. If I dug deeper, maybe these wouldn’t have happen. Junhyung wouldn’t even be lying here. How betrayed must she have felt after knowing I was with Junhyung.
“Look.” He said, handing me the slip of paper the officer handed to him just now.
I opened it and read the words.
‘Junhyung oppa, I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt you. I know you would never forgive me. I know I am unworthy, but Junhyung oppa, I love you.’
Now I totally understood his guilt.
“Junroro, listen. Whatever it is, it’s not your fault. Stop putting the blame on yourself.” I said, cupping his cheeks to make him look at me.
“Tae Hyun and… Ji Eun..” He mumbled, tears threatening to fall.
“We’ll adopt them. When they are of age, we’ll tell them the truth. There’s nothing to hide.” I said.
“But… I still feel like a murderer!” He cried openly, burying his face into my chest.
“I know. Me too.” I muttered, unable to stop my tears as well.
I have a very strong feeling the both of us would be tormented by this guilt for the rest of our lives.
