A phone call

I'm Different

Junhyung’s POV

“JUNNIE!!” Yoseob threw himself onto me the moment I got out of the car.

“Are you alright!? Where hurts!? I heard they drew a lot of blood from you until you fainted! Oh my gosh! We should have went with you! Are those people rough on you huh!? Say something!! Have you lost your voice!?” He shook me worriedly.

“Aghhh… Dizzy..” I mumbled.

“DIZZY!? YOU’RE FEELING DIZZY!? OH MY GOSH!! SIT DOWN! SIT DOWN!!” He dragged me along and pushed me onto a chair.

“YOSEOBIE! GET OFF HIM NOW!” Hyunseung commanded.

“BUT HYUNSEUNG! JUNNIE SAID HE IS FEELING DIZZY!!!” He shouted worriedly.

Hyunseung went over to him and shook him really hard.

“ARE YOU FEELING DIZZY TOO!?” He shouted as he shook him.

Yoseob looked like he was going to puke on Hyunseung any time now.

“DON’T DO THAT!!!” Kikwang pulled Yoseob away from Hyunseung.

“Ki… Kwang.. Hur~~” Yoseob whined.

“He needs to learn how to stop doing such things to people.” Hyunseung mumbled.

“How are you feeling?” He asked me.

“I’m good.” I said.

“JUNHYUNG!!! WHY DIDN’T ANYONE TELL ME JUNHYUNG IS BACK!!!” Doojoon’s voice boomed behind us.

“He was worried all night.” Hyunseung whispered.

“Hi, Leadah~ Relax. I’m alive.” I said, hugging him.

“Are you feeling better now? We should have went to visit you! No, scratch that. We should have went with you to the hospital instead! We were so worried when Haneul called and told us you needed to be hospitalized because you fainted!” He hugged me with his beastly strength.

“Gahhh~ I can’t.. breathe.” I choked out.

“YOU CAN’T BREATHE!? OH MY GOSH!!! WHAT DO WE DO NOW!?” He looked around frantically, looking for an oxygen tank maybe.

“Another idiot.” I heard Hyunseung mumble.

“Yah, Yoon Doojoon, come here.” Hyunseung gestured.

“What is it, Jang Hyunseung!? I got no time for this now! What do we do!? Do they have an oxygen mask here!? Junhyung, hang on alright! I’ll go get Haneul!!!” He shouted.

He was about to run off when Hyunseung caught him by his shirt.

“What is UGHHHH!! HYUN… SEUNG!! I.. CAN’T!!! BREATHEE!!” He yelled out when Hyunseung hugged him really tightly.

I wonder how much strength did that skinny fellow use.

“Of course you couldn’t. Who could when they are being hugged like this? Did you happen to drop your brain while building the school?” Hyunseung asked, releasing Doojoon.

“Hahahaha~ Just one night and all of you become really funny.” I laughed.

“DON’T LAUGH! IT’S NOT FUNNY!” Dongwoon slapped my thigh.

“Owww~” I whined, rubbing the part he slapped.

“We thought we lost you! All of us couldn’t eat or sleep!” He said, sniffing slightly.

“Oh please don’t start crying.” I said, pulling him into my embrace.

“We were all so scared!!!!” He burst into tears.

I mentally slapped myself.

“Please….” I pleaded.

They threw themselves onto me and we group hugged. I was squashed in the middle but my eyes were set on Haneul who was walking around, playing with the children. I was suddenly reminded of her daughter back in Korea. I still have not had the chance to ask about her.

“HANEUL AH!!!” Kikwang yelled and waved to her excitedly.

She looked up and smiled at us.

“COME!!!” Kikwang gestured.

Haneul signaled that she couldn’t hear what Kikwang was saying.

“Aish!!!” Kikwang grumbled.

He pulled himself away and ran towards Haneul, pulling her over.

“Aigoo.. What is it??” Haneul asked, confused.

“HUG!!!!!!!!!!!!” Kikwang yelled.

Haneul was pushed to the middle, in front of me.

“What is... wahhhhh!!” She exclaimed when the others threw themselves around us.

I put my arms around her, hugging her tight. She tried to struggle out but the boys were tightening themselves around us.

When they finally let go, Haneul  was blushing like crazy.

“Still as cute!” Yoseob said, pinching Haneul’s cheeks.

“YAH!” I slapped his hand away.

“Oh sorry~ Hee..” He smiled.

“Haneul ah, thank you for taking care of Junhyung yesterday. You must have been shocked when he fainted right? And you were alone..” Doojoon mumbled.

“I fainted?” I asked, looking at Haneul.

She made a face at me, as thou warning me to shut up.

Of course I know it was a lie, but I wanted to .

“You… You don’t remember?” Dongwoon asked worriedly.

“Erm…. Did I faint?” I pretended to think.

“You did!” Haneul shouted.

“But I remember… I was in the car and… Eh.. What happened?” I continued to .

“That was before! In the hospital when they drew your blood, you fainted halfway, remember!?” She said.

“AHHHHHHH!!” I yelped when I felt her pinch my side.

“WHAT IS IT!?” They asked worriedly.

“AHH! I remember!” I said.

“Good.” I heard Haneul mumble.

“Don’t yell like this! Tsk!” Doojoon mumbled.

“I’m going back to work.” Haneul said.

“See you at dinner!” They yelled.

***

I couldn’t stop smiling as I worked because of the memories I spent with Haneul. It may be short, but it was good enough. But on the other hand, I was worried for Haneul because she has been pretty moody ever since we came back two days ago, and to add to that, she keeps getting hurt.

“Are you trying to seduce the bricks? It wouldn’t work. They wouldn’t respond to your goofy smile.” Doojoon said.

“What what what!” I laughed as I put the brick on the cement.

“You’ve been smiling a lot since you came back. Your relationship with Haneul seemed to have improved too. Tell me, what did you guys do in the hospital?” He asked.

As much as I wanted to blabber the whole hotel part to him, a promise is a promise.

“We didn’t do anything. But ahh, I think we’re getting better.” I said.

“That’s good. At least there would be no more gloomy you.” He laughed.

“Hey guys, let’s eat.” One of the volunteer said.

We finished up whatever we were doing before going to wash our hands. We were walking towards the dining area when Yoseob nudged me.

“Yea?” I asked.

“Is that Haneul dazing off at the stove again?” He asked.

I looked over, and indeed, he was right.

“Mmm. What is she doing?” I mumbled as I quicken my pace.

“Omo omo! Junnie! Is she going to hold that metal pot without a glove!?” He asked frantically.

“I think so. Damn it!” I said.

“HANEUL AH!!! HANEUL!!! NO!!!” I shouted as I ran towards her but I was too late.

“Owww~~” I heard her whine as she touched her cheeks with her burnt palms.

“Are you alright!? Yah! Pabo!” I scolded as I poured cold water onto her hands.

“Sorry.” She mumbled.

“You shouldn’t be cooking in this state!” I scolded.

“Sorry!” She yelled, pushing me away and stomping off.

“YAH! COME HERE!” I dragged her back.

“Tsk!” She looked at me, annoyed.

“SIT DOWN!” I shouted.

She sat down unwillingly.

“Hand!” I yelled.

“Am I your dog!?” She shouted back.

“I say give me your hand!” I yelled.

She stretched out her palms.

“Hyung, here.” Dongwoon said as he handed me the tube of antiseptic cream.

I dabbed the cream lightly onto her palms.

“Just look at how many times have you hurt yourself in the kitchen in this short period of two days.” I said.

She didn’t say anything. She just sat back and looked away. The other boys took out the food and laid the table for lunch. When everyone arrived, we started eating.

“Here.” I said to Haneul as I put food on her plate.

She pushed her plate away and shook her head.

“You scolded me for skipping meals but you keep doing it yourself! You need to eat something.” I said.

“I’ll eat later.” She mumbled.

I sighed and decided to leave her alone. I took a bite of the bun but for some reason, I couldn’t bite through. I look up at the rest who were also smiling awkwardly. Since two days ago, her cooking was just weird. It was always either too sweet, too salty, tasteless, too soggy, too hard, but never was it just right. Everyone could tell she was in a bad mood so we made a mental promise to just eat whatever she cooked, despite the taste.

“Just eat, just eat.” Doojoon mouthed, trying to bite down on the rock hard bun.

“SKYE!” One of the volunteers shouted.

“Huh?” Haneul turned to him tiredly.

“I don’t want to say this, but seriously, are you trying to kill us?” He said.

“What?” She asked.

That guy and his clique, him especially, as I was told, are always picking on Haneul. Since day one, he has been waiting for Haneul to do something wrong so he could say mean things to her. I never knew there were politics in this field too, but then again, I guess politics exist everywhere. Haneul never bothered about him, which pisses him off even more.

I was told that he was here longer than Haneul was and he sees himself as rivals with Jace because Jace always seemed to be better. When Jace took Haneul in and left, he thought he would be able to take Jace’s place. He bossed Haneul around for the first few months, but eventually Haneul got up faster than he did, therefore, he really hates her.

He has been grumbling about the food since the first time her cooking gone haywire, but Haneul either was pretending to not hear or she was really so spaced out she couldn’t hear at all. The rest of the group also played a part in trying to shut him up, but this time, I guess he was unstoppable.

“Just look at this! You don’t eat it yourself, yet you make us eat it! What did you put inside this bun!? ROCKS!?” He yelled at her.

She looked at the bun, then at him, and then away.

“YAH!!! I’M TALKING TO YOU! DON’T YOU DARE IGNORE ME JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE JACE BEHIND YOUR BACK!!” He shouted.

I glared hard at him. How dare he talk to Haneul like this.

“What are you glaring at!? Just because you’re a celebrity, you think I don’t dare to shout at you!? You were an before too until for some reason you decide to play hero! Do you think she’ll thank you!?” He pointed at me.

“Don’t point!” Yoseob shouted, slapping his hand away.

Haneul sighed and massaged her temples.

I was about to stand up when she grabbed my wrist. Her action kind of calmed me a little from flaring up at that jealous fool.

“What is it that you want from me now?” She asked.

“IF YOU CAN’T DO A GOOD JOB IN COOKING, THEN DON’T COOK! Just because you do everything on your own doesn’t make you a good leader, you know!” He said.

His next action shocked and angered me so much I would chop off his head if I had a chopper nearby. He threw the food onto Haneul’s face.

I expected her to get angry but instead she just sighed. I was angry thou, fuming mad.

“YAH!!!!” I yelled, standing up.

I grabbed his shirt and glared hard at him.

“WHAT KIND OF BARBARIC ATTITUDE IS THIS!?” I shouted.

The boys were trying to pull me away, but I wasn’t backing down.

“She is obviously not in a good mood, but she still bothers to cook! Can’t you just shut your trap and eat!? If you hate her cooking so much, then don’t eat! No one is forcing you too! If you don’t eat, we have more to share around!” I yelled.

He was about to say something but I cut him off.

“Either that! Or if you think you can do a better job, then you cook!!! I doubt you even know how to turn on the stove, do you!? All you do is complain, complain and complain all day long! Why are you even here!? To gain some good karma so you can go to heaven!? I’m sorry but things don’t work that way! You think God is blind!? He isn’t, alright! If your heart is insincere, no matter what you do, you will still go down to hell!” I shouted into his face.

“What you are doing now is like a conman who cons money off the poor and does social work at the same time to deceive himself that he is a good man! Damn it! BE THANKFUL YOU HAVE FOOD ON THE TABLE!” I pushed him back onto the chair.

He lost balance and fell backwards. Not my fault.

“Calm down, Junnie. Please.” Doojoon said, shaking my arm.

The other boys were rubbing my back, trying to calm me down as well.

Haneul stood up and dust the food off her.

“I’m sorry.” She bowed slightly.

She was about to walk away when her phone rang. She answered the call. She turned to me, staring at me blankly.

“Are you… sure?” She said, her voice shaking.

“What?” I asked.

“But it’s not even three days.. Check again..” She said.

She dropped the phone and stared at the ground, her tears flowing like an open dam.

I picked up her phone and saw that the person was still on the line. I pressed the phone against my ear and froze as I digested what the person said.

‘So, you bring your friend back here as soon as possible alright. The first test may show positive results but that may be because he wasn’t feeling well that day as you said. We have to do a second test to confirm it. Don’t worry too much about it, alright?’

I felt a pair of hands grab my leg. I looked down and saw Haneul on her knees,

"I'm so sorry, Junhyung. I'm so, so, so sorry." She cried, banging her forehead against the ground.

As much as I wanted to pull her up and told her nothing was her fault, I couldn't move.

Is it possible that a phone call could crush your life instantly?

So, is it possible that a phone call could crush your life instantly? Or in this case, a chapter, perhaps? Haha~

Chapter 208: Finally! I've read everything. It was ultimately satisfying. No regrets reading it for a long time even though I stopped at the very last chapters but I managed to finished it. I love everything in this story. The plot, the characters and so on. Their quirkiness and childishness always make me smiles and laughs most of the time. It makes my day at how ridiculous the characters are. However, it never fails to teach me the lessons of life and how important are the families including non-blood relation. It makes to appreciate yet enjoy the content as well. Yes, I agree with you that the ending was already perfect as it was. :D Despite the chapters are unbearably long, it was entertaining and well done. Love your story! ♥
