The Renter

Me And The Girl Next Door

"But what will we do? We can't leave Yu Fei here alone." Jack told his wife. "But we planned this, right? The prize will go down to waste if we didn't take it." Pauline said as he sat beside his husband. "Then what should we do? I was hoping we could bring Yu Fei along."

"You know we can't, since she still have school. And that cruise will expire soon."

Jack let out a sigh. "We need to at least find someone to look after Yu Fei." Jack said. "Zheng can do it." Pauline said. "I know. But the kids needs an adult around too. What if they ran into a problem that only adults can solve?" he said.

Jack looked out of the window, and saw a woman standing outside their house. "Hey, who is that?" Jack said, pointing outside the window. Pauline looked outside. "Seems like she's been standing there for a long time. Maybe you should go and see what she needs." Jack said.

Pauline went to the door, and opened it. "Hello. Can I help you?" she asked the girl. The girl smiled at her, and bowed. "Hi. I'm Ella Chen. Can I rent a room in your house?" she said. Pauline doesn't know why, but that her name sounds familiar. Even her voice. She stared at her as she tried to remember. Then, finally she got it. She was the first owner of the house they're currently living in - The DJ from her favorite station whom she always listen to.

"Mrs. Wu!" Pauline said. Ella let out a smile. "Please come in! I'm glad you came to visit us." Pauline said as she led Ella inside.Ella looked around, and saw that things have not changed since they left. "It's still the same..." she commented. "Ah! Mrs. Wu. We're glad you're here. Actually, we didn't change a thing inside the house because my wife love the way you decorated the house." Jack said as she joined them. "So, you were saying about renting a room?" Pauline asked her.

Ella nodded her head. "If you do have a spare room. I don't like staying a a hotel. Besides, I'll be staying here in Taipei for a long time." she said. Pauline nodded in agreement. "Yes, I understand it could be expensive. We do have a spare room, my eldest daughter's. She's gone to go to college in Shanghai. You can use that room for a while." Pauline said. "Thank you. It will just be for a few months..." Ella explained.

Jack and Pauline looked at each other. Then, an idea hit them. Ella was confused when the two smiled at her. "Aiyo, Mrs. Wu. Actually, you can stay at our house for free."Jack said. Ella was even more confused. "Well, you see, Ella. I hope you don't mind me calling you Ella, we won a contest. And the prize is a cruise for a month. Since we also saved up for our anniversary, we decided to continue the cruise and travel for another month." Pauline explained. "We needed this vacation because all this time, all we do is work and take care of our kids. We originally wanted to bring our daughter along, but she still goes to school, and we needed to take prize." Jack added.

Ella was surprised, yet happy for the two. "Wow, such a luxurious vacation. Congratulations on your anniversary. Then, go ahead and travel the world." she said. "But, we need someone to look after our daughter. Actually, not just our daughter, but her best friend who lives alone next door. Their teenagers, but they still need adult supervision. So if you could help us look after them while we're away..." Jack said. Ella let out a smile. "Of course, I can help you with that." she said.

The couple gave each other a high five. "Don't worry, Ella. Wes is an independent boy, you won't have a problem with him and Sylvia is very obedient." Pauline told her. "I'm pretty sure I'll get along well with the two of them." Ella said.

Just then, Sylvia and Wes came inside the house. "Mom, Pa, we're home! Wes said he wants to have dinner here." Sylvia said. All three adults stood up upon seeing them. Sylvia and Wes were surprised to see Ella. "Oh, I didn't know you have guests, Auntie Pauline." Wes said. Wes smiled at Ella and bowed at her.

"Ella, this is my daughter, Sylvia. And this is our neighbor and her best friend, Wes. He's the one living alone in front of your house. Sylvia, Wes, this is Ella. She'll be staying here and supervising you while we're gone on vacation, all right? Don't give Ella problems while we're away." Pauline said. Ella smiled at the two. "It's nice to meet you." Ella said. "Nice to meet you too, Miss Ella. Or, can we call you Ella jie instead?" Sylvia said. Ella nodded her head.

Then, Sylvia turned to her parents. "So, when will you go on vacation?" she asked. "Tomorrow." Both Pauline and Jack said. All three were surprised with their answer. "What?!" the three exclaimed in unison. Jack and Pauline nodded their heads. "If we don't take the prize before next week, we'll forfeit it." Pauline said. "Then, since everything is settled, we'll start packing now!" Jack said.

Before the three could even react, the couple ran up to their room. "I didn't know Mom and Papa is planning to leave that soon!" Sylvia said. She was still in daze because of how fast everything had happened. "Don't worry, Fei Fei. Ella jie is here to help us. Of course, I'll also look take care of you." Wes told her.

Ella smiled as she looked at the two. She also remember her teenage years. Sometimes, she wished she's back to being a kid. Then, suddenly, she remembered Chun. She remembered when they got married, he also made the same promise to her when they got married.

[Flashback]

Chun carried Ella inside their house. Ella was laughing as he knew Chun was having a hard time carrying her. "Put me down!" she told him. "I can still carry you, trust me." Chun told her.  "Just put me down. I know it's uncomfortable for you." she said.

Chun smiled, and decided to give in to his wife. He put her down on the couch, and then sat beside her. "I can't believe we're finally married." Chun said. "Do you have any regrets?" Ella asked. Chun smiled, and shook his head. "The only regret I made is I didn't do this sooner." he said.

He turned to face her, and looked at her lovingly. "From now on, I'll take care of you." Chun said. Ella smiled at him, then, she kissed him on the lips.

[End of Flashback]

"Ella jie, are you all right?" Ella heard Sylvia ask. She turned to her, and smiled. "I am. Sorry, maybe I'm just tired." she said. "Then, you should take a rest first. Will you be sleeping in Sunnie jie's room?" Sylvia asked again. Ella nodded her head. "I think so..."

"Then, you should rest first. Let me take you luggage to Sunnie jie's room." Wes volunteered. Wes took her luggage, and the two lead Ella to the room she will stay for the next few months.
