Big Bro

Me And The Girl Next Door

Wes knocked on the door. He waited until someone opens it. As the door open, a family smile greeted him. "Good morning!" Sylvia greeted him. Wes smiled at her. "Ready for school?" he asked her. Sylvia nodded her head. "Let's go!" she said in a cheerful tone.

It was their first day of school, and it was a good thing that the two of them belong to the same class. "Do you think we'll be able to make lots of friends?" she asked as they walked towards their new  school. Wes simply shrugged his shoulder. "I'm not good with making new friends." he told her. Sylvia paused and then looked at him. "But why?" she asked. "Some kids doesn't seem to like me. They think I'm weird just because I'm quiet." he explained. "Well, don't worry I'll help you make new friends, OK?" she said. Wes simply smiled at her.

They finally reached the school. "Let's go!" Sylvia said in a singsong tone as she pulled Wes's hand.  However, Wes didn't budge or move at all. Sylvia looked back at him, and gave him a puzzled look. "Wes?" she asked him. "I'm scared..." he whispered. "Why are you scared?" she asked. "I'm scared someone will bully me again."

Sylvia gave her friend a toothy smile. "Don't worry. If someone bullies you, I'll fight them." she said confidently. Wes let out a smile. "Are you sure you can fight them?" he asked. "I watched KO One! I know how to fight like Da Dong does!" she said as she imitate the moves from her favorite show. This made Wes laugh. "All right! I'll let you handle my bullies from now on." he said. "That's settled then! Let's go!" Sylvia said as she dragged Wes inside the school.

Their first day of school went well. Both of them made a couple of friends. Even if they are the new kids, everyone welcomed them. They got to play and make friends with their new classmates, and for the first time, Wes was so happy.

--

"Thank you for today, Fei Fei." Wes told Sylvia as soon as they reached their houses.  Sylvia looked up at him, confused as to why he called her that. "Your Chinese name is Wen Yu Fei, right?" he said. Sylvia nodded her head. "Then, can I call you Fei Fei?" he asked. Sylvia let out a smile. Nobody calls her by her Chinese name, except when her mother is really angry at her. Pauline would call her by her full English name plus her Chinese name. "As long as you let me call you Zheng." she said. Wes nodded his head. "Aside from my Aunt Melody, you're the only one allowed to call me Zheng." he said.

"It's settled then! So, let's see each other again tomorrow?" Sylvia asked. "Let's go to school together again tomorrow." Wes said. Sylvia smiled, and gave him a thumbs up.

--

It was lunch break the next day, and Wes and Sylvia were busy eating their outside their classroom. "Wow, you're lunch box sure is full." Wes said as soon as Sylvia opened her lunch box. It was filled with her favorite food. "I have more than enough, you want to have some?" she asked. "Can I? Really?"

"Of course you could. You're my friend, remember?"

Wes took his chopsticks, and took some food from her lunch box. "Whoa, this tastes great!" Wes said as he ate it. "Your mom sure cooks great!" he added. "How about you, what's on your lunch box?" Sylvia asked. "Just some sandwich. Aunt Melody was in a hurry this morning, so she was not able to prepare something for me." Wes said as he showed her his lunch box. His lunch box is filled with messy peanut butter and jelly sandwich. "But it looks good too! Can I have a piece?" Sylvia asked. Wes nodded, then he handed her his sandwich. "Sorry for this one, I made this sandwich myself." he said.

He watched as Sylvia's eyes widen as she took another bite. "This tastes good!" she said. "You can have the rest of my sandwich if you want..." Wes said. Then, Sylvia handed him her lunch box. "And you can have my lunch as well!" she said as she handed her his lunch box.

As they were eating, a group of big, fat boys approached them. "What do we have here? New students!" One of them asked. The two of them looked up at them. "Hey, you two! Did you know this is our territory?" Another shouted angrily at them. The two of  the looked at each other. "But you guys weren't here at lunch time yesterday." Wes said. "But still, this is our territory. You two better move." Another threatened them.

"You bullies!" Sylvia stood up, and faced them. "You have to go through me first before you make us leave this bench!" she told him. The three looked at each other, and then laughed at her. "You? I could easily beat you up." The first one said.

Wes stood up, and pulled Sylvia's arm. "Let's go..." he whispered to her. Sylvia looked at him, and shook her head. "I'm not going. We came here first!" she told him. Then, one of the boys saw the lunch box Wes was holding. "I know how I can make you leave." he said. Then, he took the lunch box in Wes' hand, and dumped its content on the ground. "My lunch!" Wes exclaimed. The other guy did the same to Sylvia's lunch box. "My sandwich!" she shouted. Sylvia knelt down to salvage Wes's sandwich, but the boy stepped on it. She could hear the three laughing at them. "That will teach the two of you a lesson." the boys said.

The tree bullies left. Wes looked at Sylvia, and could see tears in her eyes as she stared at the sandwich. He felt sad seeing her that sad. He knelt down, and help her pick up the food on the ground. "Don't worry, the sandwich isn't that good." he said, trying to keep her calm. "But... but you made it..." she said as she cries. "Don't worry, I cane make you another one tomorrow. Or later, after school, all right. Don't cry anymore." he said.

He took a handkerchief from his pocket, and wiped the tears from her eyes. "Hey, you know what, Aunt Melody gave me money this morning for lunch. Let's buy something to eat first at the cafeteria before lunch is over, OK?" he told her. He held her hand as she stood up, and the two of them went to the cafeteria.

--

"Wes! Wes!"

Wes was busy reading his new comic book when he heard one of their classmate call his name. Wes closed his book, and looked up at him. "What is it, Diana?" he asked. "Help us! The girls are being harassed by the 3rd graders!" she said. "All of you?" he asked again. Diana nodded her head. "All of us, including Sylvia." she said.

Wes put his book down, and then ran outside the classroom to find Sylvia. He found them by the playground. All of the girls were behind Sylvia, while Sylvia was trying to protect them from the bullies. "Just give us your money, all right!" One of the boys shouted at them. He remembered these boys as  the same boys that bullied him and Sylvia the other day. "Go away! We will not give you our money!" Sylvia shouted at them. "Give your money or I'll hurt you!"

Wes ran towards them. "Stop!" he shouted at them. "'Stop bullying the girls. They didn't do anything to you!" he shouted again at them. The leader of the bullies looked at him, and gave him a smirk. "It's you again? What are you, her boyfriend?" he asked. The three of them laughed. "Hey!" Sylvia shouted at the bullies. "I'm Sylvia's big brother. Please leave my little sister and our classmates alone." Wes said calmly this time. "Why, are you going to give us your money?" the bully asked. Wes shook his head. "Then, get out of my way!"

The bully then pushed Wes till he fell on the ground. Sylvia panicked upon seeing Wes hurt. "Zheng!" she shouted. She tried to reach for him, but as she made her move, the bully in front of her pushed her to the ground. Wes saw what they did to her. "Fei Fei!" he called. He stood up, and then began to push the bullies. One of them began to punch him, making him fall on the ground again. As they laughed at him, he tried to stand up, and threw a punch at them.

"Wes! Wes! Wes!"

He could hear the girls cheer for him. And before he knew it, he single-handedly brought down the bullies. He stood in front of them, as the bullies lay on the ground. "Don't ever try to bully my little sister, or anyone again." he hissed at them. Scared of the stern look he gave them, the bullies scrambled to get up, and leave the playground. He could not believe himself that he was able to fight those boys. Usually, when bullies hurt him, he does not fight back. But when he saw how the boys hurt Sylvia, he knew he had to fight to protect her.

"Zheng!"

He heard Sylvia call. He looked back, and saw her already standing. He immediately rushed to her. "Are you all right?" he asked as he checked on her. Sylvia nodded her head. "Sylvia, your big brother is so cool!" One of their classmates said. "I'm pretty sure the bullies won't bother us with you around!" another said. "Yes! Thank you, Wes. You're our savior." another said.

"Seems like those bullies like to pick on lower grade kids." Sylvia told him. "As long as I'm here, no one can hurt you, OK?" Wes said. Sylvia smiled and nodded his head.

--

"Dad, aren't you a Judo champion back in your days?" Wes asked his dad while they were on a video chat. "I am! You should go and ask your Aunt Melody about the medals I had before. I'm sure she helped to keep it." his dad said. "Then, would it be OK if I take Judo too?"

This time, Melody hear what Wes said. "Judo? Hey, Zheng, I didn't know why you get started interested in martial arts. I've been bugging you for so long to take Judo classes. Are you getting bullied again?" Melody asked. "Bullied? Wes, son? Someone is bullying you?" his dad asked. Wes lowered his head. "There's bullies in school..." Wes said. "Well, I'm going to your school tomorrow to talk to the principal!" Malody said angrily. "Auntie! Don't do that. Besides, I was able to fight back this time..." Wes confessed.

With that, both Melody and Wes' father smiled. "You did? I'm so proud of you, son!" his dad said. "They were going to hurt Sylvia so I had to fight back." Wes said. From the computer monitor, Wes could see his father smiling. "Learning Judo to protect a girl... hmmmm... that's interesting." his father said. Melody couldn't help but smile as well. She's  glad that her nephew found a reason to fight back from his bullies. "Well, I can sign you up for the weekend classes for Judo in the community house. You can bring Sylvia along with you, all right?" Melody said. Wes smiled and nodded his head. "I just want to make sure no one dares to hurt my little sister."

Melody laughed as she ruffled Wes' hair. "Well, that's good. Oh, and Wes, I already brought what you asked me." Wes simply smiled as he listened to his father.

--

"I feel like I'm getting stronger like Da Dong!" Sylvia told Wes. Wes couldn't help but laught at her. They just finished their first day of Judo class, and Sylvia is already bragging to be as strong as her favorite TV character. "But we need to practice more if you want to surpass Da Dong." Wes told her. Sylvia smiled and nodded his head.

When Wes asked Sylvia to join him in Judo class, he told her that if they take the class together, she can be as strong as Da Dong, her favorite TV character. She immediately said yes,and dragged her mother to sign them up for Judo class. That weekend was their first class together.

As they were walking home, they saw someone being hurt by some bullies. "Wait, I know those guys..." Wes said. He made a step, and shouted at the bullies. "Hey!" As soon as the bullies saw him, they immediately ran. Instead of chasing the bullies, they decided to help the one they hurt.

"Are you all right?" he asked the boy. "I'm OK..." he said as Wes helped him up. "Hey, are you Wayne Huang from the other class?" Wes asked. Wayne nodded his head. "Thank you for making them go away..." Wayne said. "You're welcome. But may I ask, why did they hurt you?" Wes asked. "I refused to make their assignments anymore..." Wayne said.

"Those bullies..." Sylvia muttered as she clenched her fist. "I wish they won't get back at me when we return to class on Monday..." Wayne said with a worried look on his face. Wes and Sylvia looked at each other. Then, they looked at Wayne. "How about this, starting Monday, hang out with us." Wes suggested. Wayne gave him a surprised look. "Really? I can be your friend?" he asked. Sylvia nodded her head. "Those bullies should be scared at my big brother after he beat them last week." Sylvia said. Wayne then looked at Wes. "You're that famous boy who beat the bullies at the playground last week?" Wayne asked him. He could not believe he is standing in front of the 2nd graders "savior". "I did, but it's not big deal. They were trying to hurt my little sister." he said, pointing at Sylvia.

Then, Wayne knelt down in front of him. "Please, brother, please be my bodyguard. Please? Please? Please?" Wayne begged him. Sylvia couldn't help but laugh at him. "Hey, stand up, Wayne." Wes said as he pulled him up. "I can help you with your assignments. Or I can give you my lunch money. Just be my bodyguard, please?" Wayne begged again. "I'm not that strong. I'm not suited to be your bodyguard." Wes said. "But the bullies are scared of you."

"How about this. If you become mine and Sylvia's friend, I think I would be able to help protect you from the bullies."

Wayne's face lightened up upon hearing that. "Really? You're willing to be my friend?" he asked. Wes nodded his head. Then he let out a shout of joy and hugged him tight. "Thank you! Thank you!" Wayne said. Sylvia could only laugh as she watched the two boys.

--

"Wes! Come take a look outside! Sylvia is in big trouble!"

Wes heard Wayne call from the outside of their classroom. He put his pen down, and ran outside. He saw Sylvia standing in front of the school bully, with Diana behind her. "If she said she didn't take it, she didn't OK?" Sylvia shouted at him. "You're so brave, you know. Aren't you scared I'll pulp you to death, you little twerp?"

Sylvia shook her head. "Who's scared of you?" she asked. "Everyone here in Dong Han is scared of me!" The bully said. "Well, I am not!" Sylvia shouted again. Wes saw the bully lose his patience, and tried to drag Diana away. Sylvia struggled to keep her friend beside her. The bully then pushed Sylvia on the wall so hard, that she felt down. He saw how Sylvia flinch in pain.

"Stop what you're doing!" Wes shouted at the bully. The bully stopped, and looked at Wes. "Well, well, well, who do we have here... the famous class protector." The bully said with a smile. "Let Diana go." Wes said firmly. The bully looked at the small girl he's holding by the arm. She was flinching in pain. "After she stole my money? No way! She have to pay for what she have done!"

"If Diana stole your money, shouldn't you be telling the teachers so they punish her?"

"I want her to pay up for it!"

"Or you're just blaming her so that she could give you the money that she have?"

Wes folded his arms, and looked at Diana. "I didn't take his money, I swear!" Diana said. Then, he looked at the money. "Do you even have proof that she took your money?" Wes asked. "I have no time for you, you little dork. Get out of my way!" he said.

As the bully took a step forward, Wes pushed him, making him face the wall. He then took his left arm, and held it behind his back. He then pulled the arm he's holding, making the bully flinch in pain. "Next time you have a problem with any of my classmates, take it to the teachers, do you understand?" he told him. "I will, I will. Please let me go, it hurts" the bully cried. Then, he pulled his arm again. "And next time, don't hurt my little sister. If you do that again, you'll feel pain greater than this." Wes said. With that, he let the bully go. As soon as the bully was free, he ran away from Wes.

Then, Wes helped Sylvia up. "My big brother is so cool!" she said. "Are you all right?" he asked. Sylvia nodded her head. Then,  he patted her head. "Next time, " he said. "Look for me when you get yourself in trouble, all right?"
