Himchan 9

B.A.P. Oneshots

“Himjong! What did you do to your sister?” Himchan roared and from across the house, the sound of children giggling could be heard. He sighed. “It’s parent’s day and umma’s  already helping set up the picnic. Do you children want to be there or not?”

They came running out from their hiding places and stood in a row in front of the scowling man. The little girl ran up to him. “Appa, don’t be mad at Hana. Let’s go. Himjong didn’t mean to. We just wanted to play.” She pouted and like the daddy’s girl she was, her words were able to melt Himchan’s heart.

His son stood, turning his small body left and right, as he watched his sister perform her aegyo. The twins were only three minutes apart, with Himjong being the older one. Himchan looked at his son. “Aish, you need a haircut after this. The two of you are starting to look alike.”

Himjong laughed and showed his gap tooth. “We do look alike!”

Himchan herded his children into the car and strapped them into their seatbelts. “Remember, you have to be on your best behavior. The moms will be helping with food and the dads will be playing the games with you guys. So, I want you to on your best behavior.” He glanced at them through the rearview mirror and his daughter beamed like an angel.

            “Neh, appa,” they chorused.

The park was already overflowing with six year olds and Himchan cringed when he saw a boy run up to hug Hana. His heart winced when he saw that she was smiling back at him. Growling, he pulled their arms apart and took both of his children by the hand. “We can go over there and greet the kids later.”

The little boy’s mouth dropped and he scrambled to run after Hana as Himchan dragged them away towards the pond. He felt better when he saw the mothers milling around. He let his children go and bowed to them.

You saw your husband arrive with your kids and smiled. It was difficult taking care of the two energetic kids but they were worth it. You waved to Himchan and continued to set up the multiple bento boxes for the lunch picnic.

Himchan watched his kids as they interacted and got ready for the competition.

“Himchan?” He looked up and saw another mother smiling at him.

He bowed politely to her, trying to place her face.

“Your children are so adorable. You must work really hard, raising two kids at once.” She slid her palm comfortably against his arm. Her lashes batted and Himchan wanted to raise his eyebrows. What was this lady doing? “Do you ever feel like taking a break?”

“Oh, no.” He moved backwards and her hand fell. “I love my kids and my wife.”

She pouted and simpered. “But surely you deserve a nice vacation once in a while?”

“Daddy, why are you taking so long? The three legged race is starting and Himjong is waiting.” A small hand tugged on his jeans. He looked down to see Hana. His daughter turned to the mom staring at them. “Don’t touch my daddy. My mommy won’t like it.” She ran off, pulling on Himchan’s hand.

Himchan laughed to himself. His daughter really took after him. He reached the start of the race where Himjong was struggling to put his feet into a sack. Himchan went over and tied their legs together. Staying bent, he held his son’s hand tightly. “Kim Himjong, hwaiting!”

The little boy raised his fist as well. “Appa, hwaiting!” The whistle started and Himchan held onto his son and guided him. “Raise the left leg, now let’s move our legs together. Like that! Yes.” When Himjong threatened to fall, he pulled the child back. The race was tough but in a burst of speed, Himjong ran forward and dragged them across the finish line, almost knocking Himchan over.

Hana was waiting and clapped as they were handed the blue ribbon. “I saw you almost trip, daddy! Come on, let’s go to the cake decorating competition. I want to beat this girl.”

He ruffled his daughter’s hair. “So competitive at such a young age. I hope the other dads are worse than I am.”

Himchan put on an apron and waved a spoon. “Looks professional?” Hana giggled and led her father to one of the cakes waiting to be decorated. The whistle started and Himchan glanced over. All the fathers had on blank faces except for one.

“I’m a baker. This is easy.” They watched him as he expertly spread the frosting over the top and the sides. Himchan grabbed a knife and proceeded to dip it into the frosting. He decided to be different and spread one side with chocolate and the other with vanilla. Hana handed him the pink and he trimmed lacing, all the while keeping an eye on the baker. The baker was working at a fast pace and the other fathers were fumbling along as well.

Himchan was determined to at least win second place. He squirted blue and purple flowers and then in a flourish, took a ribbon and carefully wrote out Hana’s name. The girl clapped her hands. “My daddy’s done!” she jumped up and down and earned the envious looks of the other kids.

Himchan held up the cake triumphantly. “Finished!”

The judges walked over and glanced at the cake. “Very well done, Mr. Kim. I award you with second place.” Hana high fived her father and Himchan beamed proudly.

The kids ran out of the tent to gather with their peers and play near the water and Himchan wandered off to the side to watch. His kids watched out for one another and you smiled as he saw Himjong hold out a hand for his sister to hold as they hopped across the river.

“Be careful okay? I haven’t taught you how to swim properly yet!” he called.

You walked over to him and poked him in the side. “Ya, you’re embarrassing them. None of the other dads are even watching.”

Himchan puffed out his chest. “Well, there’s a reason why I was voted best dad of the year. Look at how I won so many competitions for our kids.”

You patted his back. “Now you just have to win the race among the dads. Go get in line and remember, the kids are going to be your obstacles. You need to find two kids too. Have fun with that.” Himchan pouted after you.

“Yeobo, I don’t get a kiss?” You waggled your fingers at him and walked away.

When the announcement was made, Himchan made his way over to where all the fathers were gathered. “Sup,” he nodded at a few he knew.

They were stretching and warming up. “Aish, this race, with children everywhere. How are we supposed to even find them among all the other kids?”

Himchan raised an eyebrow. “I have two kids guys.”

            “Fathers, ready, get set, go!”

Himchan took off running and suddenly children started popping out from the grass. He heard his daughter’s distinct giggle and took off after her. She jumped into her father’s waiting arms and scrambled onto his back.

“Appa, let’s go find Himjong!” Himchan ran and saw some fathers had already retrieved their kids. “Come on, faster!”

Himchan looked around and saw that his clever son had hidden near the finish line and he was currently jumping up and down, urging his father to be faster. Himchan put on a burst of speed and grabbed Himjong’s hands, hauling him towards the finish line.

“The winner is, Kim Himchan.” The announcement blared and from where you were watching, you cheered.

A sweaty Himchan came up to you when the kids sat down with their boxes to eat. “I did well didn’t I?”

You used a napkin to wipe the sweat off his forehead. “Yes, world’s number one daddy. I think you can truly earn that title now.”

Himchan pouted. “I earned that title the moment we knew were having twins. Most fathers would have cringed but I took it in stride.”

You snorted and nodded at Hana. “Your daughter wants you.” You smiled as you saw Himchan jump up and run to her, devoted as ever.
