Daehyun 35

January 26, 9:15 pm

Daehyun placed his ear against your stomach and grinned. “He’s going to be playing for the national soccer team, I tell you. Are you in pain? He kicks really hard.” He looked at you from his sideways view. You shook your head and smiled.

“Nothing that is going to be comparable to when he arrives in the world.”  You placed a hand gently on top of Daehyun’s head. He tapped the sides of your swollen stomach and lifted your shirt to reveal the taut, tightly stretched skin.

“He’s getting so big. Can you imagine that in a month, we can welcome our son into the world?” He reverently placed a kiss near your belly button and lowered your shirt. He got up and the bed sank and the weight shifted as he moved upwards towards you. He kissed you and stood up, straightening his tie. “Take good care of yourself, okay? I’ll be back in a week.”

You waved at him. “Be nice to your clients and don’t forget to tell your parents I said hello when you drop by. Have a safe trip. Don’t crease your shirt when you sleep on the subway. Be careful okay?”

He chuckled. “Yes. I promise to be back to you in one piece. Now you have to promise to take good care of our son.”

“Got it, got it. As if I weren’t the one suffering for nearly eight months. I would never let anything happen to the precious cargo.” Your husband waved one more time before stepping out of the room.

January 27, 12:35 am

The phone rang. Your cell phone was lit and the landline was ringing at the same time. You grabbed for the receiver and placed it to your ear as you tried to get out of bed to get to your cell. “It’s me!” you heard your best friend’s voice. “I was calling your cell too so don’t bother. I heard that there’s been an accident.”

            “An accident? What happened?”

You were slightly groggy but moving with a purpose now. “An hour ago, the train that was headed to North Korea was bombed. They are saying that there were no survivors.”

There was a pause as you tried to process what she was telling you. “T-train to North Korea?”

“Yes! I think it was headed to one of the border cities. Businessmen apparently on some sort of a trip. Didn’t you mention that Daehyun was going on a trip? Could it be his train?”

At the mention of your husband’s name, you jumped into action. Your mind was racing. He had mentioned that he was going to one of the border cities. The time seemed right and you knew for a fact that he was taking the train. You lunged for your cell phone and called him. His phone went straight to voicemail.

Your heart caught in your throat and you spoke into the receiver, “I’m coming over. You’re going to take me to the train station. I need to know what happened.”

In your hurry, you left your cell phone lying near the bed and ran out into the night. The moment the doors clicked and you locked them, your phone lit up with a call.

January 27, 12:54 am

Your friend didn’t live too far. The moment you stepped out, you cursed to yourself. Why hadn’t you thought to bring a coat? It was winter after all, and there were flurries of snow falling. Your teeth chattered. You shook heavily. Another brilliant idea hit you. You should have told your friend to pick you up. You reached for your phone and came out empty. Never mind. It was only five blocks.

The snow was falling harder and there was a cramp in your stomach. Your vision was blurred by tears and your ears were about to fall off. You stepped off the curb and had no idea the car was coming. It sped down the road, slipping on the ice and within seconds, before you could tell yourself to move, you were launched into the air.

The first thought you had before you out was that you had to keep the baby safe for Daehyun.

January 27, 3:07 am

Your eyes opened and your hand flew to your stomach. It was oddly flat and you felt empty. “My baby,” you breathed.

Suddenly there was a flurry of movement and your best friend came into view. “You’ll be okay. There will be more babies.”

You knew what had happened. There was a high pitched scream of agony. It sounded odd to your ears and you tried to locate the source of it until you realized that it was you. But you couldn’t stop. Doctors and nurses rushed in and still you screamed.

They tried to inject a needle into you but you moved. Then you remembered why you had been out in the cold in the first place. “Daehyun,” you struggled to sit up. “Is he okay?” You prayed that he was. You couldn’t afford to lose two in one night.

“I called the station. He wasn’t on that train. He’s coming here right now.”

He was alright. He was alright. That was all that mattered. But would he hate you? You had broken your promise after all. You didn’t have time to worry. The doctors finals jabbed the needle into you and you were out.

January 27, 9:50 am

“Honey, it’s okay. Stop moving. The more you move, the more tired you will be.” It was Daehyun’s voice. Your eyes flew open. It was him and it was his hand on yours. You tried not to cry.

            “Dae, I’m sorry.”

He forced a brave smile. “You did for me, didn’t you? I tried calling you but you didn’t pick up. Your phone kept ringing and ringing.”

Your heart caught. You had forgotten your phone. You stared at him, shuddering. You jerked your hand out of his grasp. “I killed our baby,” you whispered.

He shushed you and hugged you but you felt nothing. His words were hollow as he tried to convince you. He didn’t mean anything he said. He hated you. You could feel the hate emanating from his body. It was scorching. You closed your eyes, forced your breath to even. He left you.

January 27, 11:23 am

Discreetly, your hands went to the dosage on the drip. You fumbled around, adding more of the drug. There was a surge in your veins and your head became light, cloudy, your thoughts were fading.

            “I’m sorry, Daehyun,” you whispered.

January 27, 11:24 am

The machines in the room started beeping. A cod blue was sent. By the time the doctors rushed in, it was too late.

January 27, 12:56 pm

“There has been a terrible car crash on the interstate highway. One car was driving in the opposite direction. Only one person was killed. The deceased has been identified as Mr. Jung Daehyun, a business manager for Samsung who narrowly escaped death yesterday when he missed the train his colleagues were on. Nobody is sure if he was drunk or if it was an act of suicide. This is Kim Suri for Seoul News.”
