It was one in the morning and everyone seemed to be sleeping, even Kai who was cuddling with his Angry Birds plush toy hugging it tightly to him as he dreamt happy things. Unfortunately ten minutes away from Kai’s house, Taemin was not sleeping so peacefully.

Taemin, who had just jolted awake sweating and gasping for breath, was sobbing into his pillow so he wouldn’t wake his parents. He had had the most awful dream and didn’t want to go back to sleep in fear of having It again. He calmed his crying slightly and shakily reached for his phone, dialing a number he had memorized long ago, and holding the phone to his hear listening to the ringing on the other end. He desperately hoped the call would be answered. He was terrified right now and needed to know that everything was alright.

In Kai’s room, MBLAQ was playing loudly in the room, rustling Kai awake from his pleasant dream about a space adventure making him become alert to his surroundings. He tiredly answered the phone, answering in a groggy voice, “Who is it?”

“K-Kai…,” a small voice was heard. Kai knew it was his best friend from the tone of voice but the sniffling in the background woke him up more when worried settled in.

“Taemin hyung...Is something wrong?” he asked.

“I-I had a n-nightmar-re…,” Taemin whimpered, fresh tears beginning to fall as he recalled his vivid dream.

Kai frowned deeply as he sat up in his bed. “What was it about?” he questioned further, hoping he could help his hyung.

“Y-You…I don’t wanna t-talk about i-it. J-just don’t…K-Kai, you can’t d-die,” Taemin sobbed as he demanded that of his friend, hugging his knees close to his chest as he cried into the phone.

Kai’s heart nearly shattered when he heard the devastating cried over the phone, wishing that he could be there. “I won’t, I promise. I’ll be here for you always,” Kai vowed over the phone, even placing his right hand to his heart.

“O-Okay, good.”

“Hyung, do you need me to come over? I’ll just throw on shoes and a jacket and run over there. I can be there in fifteen minutes flat,” Kai said, throwing his blankets off and turned his bedside lamp on the grab his things.

“No, t-that’s okay. I-I think the deal w-with my cousin is a-affecting me more than I want it t-to…,” Taemin said, his hiccups breaking into his speech. “I-I’ll be okay.”

“Are you sure?” Kai bit his lip, feeling a little guilty.

“Yeah. Just go back to sleep. W-Will you come o-over tomorrow please?” Taemin pleaded, his sobbing now coming to a stop. His chest felt a lot better after talking to Kai.

“Okay. I’ll be there first thing in the morning. We can color in your old coloring books. That’s therapeutic, right? If you have more nightmares, call me right away! I’ll answer quickly,” Kai said, doing his best to care for his hyung over the phone.

“Okay.”

“Go drink some warm milk. That might make you feel better.”

“Okay. Sorry for waking you up…,” Taemin apologized, feeling a little bad that he had called so late.

“No! Don’t apologize! I like making you feel better. Try to get some sleep, okay? I’ll see you in a few hours,” Kai said, grinning softly into the phone.

“Goodnight…,” Taemin said a final time before hanging up and padding down to the kitchen to heat up a glass of milk.

Kai set his phone down and lied back down in his bed, immediately falling asleep when his head hit the pillow.

Kai had arrived at Taemin’s house at seven in the morning and took care of his best friend for the entire day. Taemin was forever grateful to him, wishing that Kai would never ever leave him.
