It’s been months—months since Taemin noticed his crush for Choi Minho and he still hadn’t done anything about it. Taemin wanted to deny his feelings but he just simply couldn’t—not when he saw the teenager every day, especially in the locker room. It was driving Taemin mad!

But today was the day. Taemin was going to confess.

Taemin knew how this would probably end—with Taemin crying alone in the bathroom. After weeks and weeks of seeing Minho around and even talking to him a few times, Taemin had concluded that Minho was most likely not gay. And that left him at a disadvantage.

But still, Taemin would try.

Taemin had rushed out of his second period class and to Minho’s locker, where he knew he always stopped at right now. He arrived and sure enough, Minho was there, exchanging his history textbook with an algebra one. Taemin ran to him, stopping right in front of him, surprising Minho.

“Hi, Minho!” Taemin chirped charmingly, giving a warm smile to the older boy.

Minho smiled back, overcoming his shock and now a little confused. “Hello, Taemin. Was there something you wanted to talk about?”

Taemin nodded shyly. “Er, yeah there was,” he muttered anxiously. “Um..well, I really…oh how to go about this…” Taemin brought his hand to his mouth, chewing on a nail.

Minho chuckled, finding it cute how the boy was nervous. “Take your time,” he said, “I don’t mind being late to class.”

Taemin nodded to him gratefully. He felt dumb; why hadn’t he thought about how he was going to confess to him before doing so. This was embarrassing.

“Well,” he started, “There’s been something…er…I really want to get something off my chest.”

Minho nodded encouragingly, continuously smiling.

“Minho…you…”

“I’m….?

“You’re….You’re great!” Taemin nearly shouted, trying not to cry from his nerves.

Minho laughed, finding the words amusing, “I’m great?”

“Yes! Really great!” Taemin continued, “So great…that I…I….”

“You…what?”

“I….I like you!” Taemin did shout that time, trying not to let his tears fall. “I really like you, Minho….”

“Oh…do you mean…in that way?”

Taemin only nodded, not trusting his voice.

Minho’s smile faltered, and the happy expression had changed to a sad and guilty one. “Oh…Taemin….,” he said, “I like you, too…but not in that way. To be honest, I really didn’t think you were really gay. I guess now that I think about it that would make sense….”

Taemin sniffled, mentally hitting himself as he did so.

Minho, alarmed at the upset sounding boy, was quick to say something else, “I think you’re really sweet Taemin, I really do. You’re a good friend but I just don’t like boys that way. But believe me, one day you’re going to find someone who loves you dearly.”

Taemin nodded, letting a tear slip down his cheek.

“I really sorry,” Minho apologized, pulling Taemin in a hug, hoping that that was all that his classmate needed to feel better. He felt bad for turning him down, but what could he do. He didn’t like boys; he wasn’t gay.

Taemin almost started sobbing right then; being in the arms of the person he liked so much who didn’t like him back was painful. He wished wholeheartedly that he was a girl, because then Minho would like him. Taemin whimpered, pushing Minho away.

“I’m sorry…,” was all he said before running off to the nearest bathroom, leaving Minho to stare off at him sadly.

Taemin hid in the bathroom stalls for the rest of the day, not even coming out for lunch. Instead, he just continued to cry silently, feeling stupid to even think that Minho would ever like someone like him. It was a pitiful sight.

All day, Minho couldn’t shake Taemin from his mind. He just couldn’t stop feeling guilty. Taemin was a nice person but he wasn’t for Minho and Minho wasn’t for him.

Minho sighed as he walked home, “I’m sorry, Taemin.”
