Taemin, dressed in his grade school uniform and carrying his bright red back pack, skipped to school in a good mood. He had had a wonderful dream about living in a zoo and he had a sleepover with the gorilla, so naturally when he woke up the next morning, he was in a very happy mood.

And to make things even better, he had banana milk in his lunch box today.

Today was going to be the best day ever.

Kai on the other hand, was in the slumps today. He was in such a hurry to go to school, he forgot to grab him lunch his mother had made him. He would have been eating his favorite beef stir fry today. Unlike his friend Taemin, he certainly was not in the mood to be skipping.

The two friends had met up at the playground of the school, greeting one another happily, or Kai’s state, fake happily.

“Kai! I have banana milk today!” Taemin said enthusiastically, holding up the bag in his hand.

Kai smiled. “Yum!”

“Wanna share it with me?”

“But it’s your favorite…”

“And you’re my favorite friend so I want to share my favorite drink with you!” Taemin chirped, smiling widely to his friend.

Kai felt touched and agreed to his friend’s generosity.

During their class time, Taemin could barely sit still, completely happy with the way things were turning out for him today. Kai, instead of being happy, was worrying about what he would do for lunch. It was around this time that he started to get hungry and he had no lunch to suffice him. Things just weren’t turning out well for him.

His harsh reality seemed to really hit him when his stomach started growling.

By the time lunch finally rolled around, he was so hungry and miserable that little tears started to make their way into his eyes. He sniffled and tried to hide them by laying his head on the table in his arms.

Taemin walked over to his friend just like every other day, carrying his lunch box and pulled a chair to the opposite side of Kai’s desk. He looked to his miserable friend and immediately knew something wasn’t right with him.

“Kai?” he said, setting a hand on the little boy’s arm. “Are you okay?”

Kai only shook his head, not even lifting his head.

“Are you sick?” Taemin’s face showed concern and he placed his hand to Kai’s forehead. “You don’t feel warm…Kai, what’s wrong?”

Kai mumbled into his arms, feeling slightly humiliated by his weak state. Taemin, not understanding a word he said, looked confused and asked again. Kai turned his head so his mouth wasn’t covered anymore and repeated himself.

“I’m hungry and I forgot my lunch.”

Taemin’s face relaxed, showing no more signs of concern. He placed his lunchbox on the desk, forcing Kai to move his head and sit up. He was relieved there was nothing seriously wrong.

“That’s easily fixable,” he said, opening his lunch box. Kai looked at him curiously. “Share mine. I have plenty of food in here anyway.”

Kai looked wondrously up at his friend. “Really? That’s okay?” he asked timidly.

Taemin nodded in reassurance, giving his friend a smile. He pulled out his chopsticks and held them up. “We’ll have to share these though. I only have one pair.”

Kai smiled widely and completely relieved he wasn’t going to starve to death.

The two enjoyed their food, sharing the special banana milk and Taemin feeding Kai bites of his food with the single pair of chopsticks.
