Play Date
Best Friends
It was Saturday morning and Taemin was wired. He kept running to the window in his home, diligently watching for a car to pull up to his house. Today, he and Kai were to have a play date since Kai’s parents were going to an important dinner or something. Taemin’s parents had happily agreed to watch Kai’s for the day and letting him stay the night as well.
Taemin was so excited he still hadn’t changed into his play clothes and was still wearing his Pororo pajamas.
“Taeminnie, go get dressed,” his mother said coming up behind him.
“No,” he refused, not looking away from the window. “What if Kai comes when I’m up there? I need to be here.”
His mother chuckled beneath her breath, not bothering to say anything more to her son. He could get dressed later. It was still early anyway.
It was only ten minutes later when a silver car pulled up, a woman getting out and retrieving her son from the back seat. Taemin grinned widely and ran to the front door, yelling that Kai was finally here. Taemin used both hands to grip the door knob, turning it to the right and pulling it open to reveal Kai bouncing up and down.
“Taemin hyung!” he cried, jumping forward to hug Taemin tightly. The two laughed and immediately ran upstairs to Taemin’s room, leaving their mothers to talk.
They reached Taemin’s room and flung themselves on the white bed. “Wow! You’re room is so cool!” Kai gasped, scanning the small bookshelf and toy box. On the window, a Pororo sheet was hung to block out street lights and sunlight.
“Thank you,” Taemin mumbled, feeling bashful. “Do you want to play?”
“Do you have Power Rangers?” Kai asked excitedly.
Taemin nodded, crawling off the bed and to the toy box. He opened the lid and pulled out a red power ranger and a blue one. He handed the blue one to Kai and held onto the red one.
The two played for hours, laughing away and fighting slimy, poisonous toads and robot aliens from another planet. They were so absorbed into their pretend world that they didn’t hear the door open. Taemin’s mother walked in with a plate of cookies and two glasses of milk. At the smell of food, the two stopped playing and sat down obediently.
“Thank you!” the two chorused before reaching for a cookie.
Taemin’s mother smiled at them before retreating from the room, feeling light as laughter rang in her ears.
