Chapter 100

Masks

The day of the debut showcase:

6:00.

"HYERI!!" a loud scream woke me up from my sleep. I sighed, recognizing the voice. Who needs an alarm clock when your'e living with four excited and noisy girls?

"What is it?" I opened my eyes slowly. Why are they so energized? It's too early for this!

"WE ARE DEBUTING TODAY!" the loud voice returned, even more excited than before.

"Yujin, shut up! It's too early for your screams.." Sumi shouted from the bathroom, trying to scold the older female.

"Stop scolding her!" Eun Hee threw a pillow in Sumi's direction, and it hit Sumi's head. Yujin and Eun Hee started to laugh loudly. I guess there is no way to go back to sleep now..

"Shut up, all of you." I said quietly, scratching my head.

"Sorry, unnie." they apologized and bowed. I smiled and got out of bed.

"When are we leaving?" Sey stood in the entrance to our bedroom.

"6:30." I answered, yawning.

"I made coffee, come drink it before it gets cold." Sey said, smiling, and returned to the kitchen. I watched her, realizing she is already dressed. When did she wake up? usually I'm the one waking everybody up..

"We wanted to let you sleep a little more today, unnie." Yujin said when she noticed my confused expression.

"Thanks." I smiled, thanking her. I went to sleep early yesterday, but I guess it wasn't enough..

"I'm done." Sumi announced, leaving the bathroom. I went inside to brush my teeth and wash my face.

When I finished the other girls were already dressed and they were eating breakfast or packing their stuff. I smiled and went to get the desired coffee from the kitchen, along with something to eat.

7:00.

We arrived at the showcase venue. It was a small hall, containing two hundred seats. Jinu showed us where we are going to get changed and do our hair and makeup and explained some administrative things to us. When he was done talking we went to see the stage. It's similar to the size of our practice room, so we won't have to adjust our positions much.. It's already a good start.

7:30.

"Girls, go to your positions, we are starting the rehearsal." Gun ordered.

"Yes, oppa." we answered, slowly getting up from the floor.

We practiced for hours until it was lunch time. After lunch we had another rehearsal. While we were practicing there was a photographer taking pictures of us. I guess the company is going to release them afterwards..

16:30.

"Hey, girls." Himchan came during our short break.

"Oppa!" Sey was the first to jump and she hugged him tightly. Himchan looked a bit uncomfortable because the staff was watching, but she quickly adjusted and acted normal, pulling away from him.

"Hey, oppa." I greeted him and went to give him a hug in order to cover up for Sey's mistake. If all of us hug him they won't think his hug with Sey is weird..

The other girls followed me and hugged Himchan as well when it was their turn to greet him.

"How is practice going?" Himchan asked.

"Good." Eun Hee answered, smiling.

"Are you nervous?"

"Yes." Yujin admitted shyly.

"Don't worry, you'll do great." he said and ruffled her hair affectionately.

"Wait a bit, we have something for you!" I said and walked to the dressing room to get my things. I quickly took out what we prepared for him the day before and joined the girls.

"This is for you, oppa. Please take good care of us!" I said and bowed, presenting him the cookies we baked yesterday. The other girls bowed as well since it was a gift from all of us.

"Bribing the MC?" Himchan asked teasingly.

"Yes." I nodded. "Does it work?"

"Of course." he smiled brighty. "But does your boyfriend know you are giving presents to other guys?"

"I can take it back if you don't want it, Jinu will love to eat it." I said innocently

"It's mine." Himchan declared and snatched the container from my hands, keeping it close to him. I chuckled. "Yongguk will kill me if I don't treat you well, so you have all my help." he winked.

"Last rehearsal before the dress rehearsal!" Jinu announced, and it was the sign for us to get in positions again. This time we did Himchan's parts as well, except for the Q&A part.

17:00.

We freshsned up and started to get dressed and get our hair and makeup done. When we finished we noticed Himchan had also changed clothes. He wore a black dress shirt and a black pants. He had bangs covering his forehead and he looked handsome. He is B.A.P's visual for a reason..

The dress rehearsal went smoothly, and the staff was satisfied.

18:00.

"Hyeri, I'm nervous." Yujin sat next to me after we finished our dress rehearsal.

"Relax, we will do great." I tried ro reassure her.

"What if we mess up?"

"Then act like it's part of our performance and don't let people notice you messed up." I smiled.

~

Himchan was waiting in the hallway when Sey walked passed him. She probably didn't notice he was there because she didn't make any attemp to approach him.

Realizing he had been ignored, Himchan whistled to get her attention. She turned her head to him and her face lit up when she saw it was him.

"I thought you ignored me on purpose." he pouted childishly when Sey approached him, closing the distance between them.

"Why would I?" she wrapped her hands around his waist.

"You know, you look hot in this outfit." he said after checking her out.

"You too." she smiled. "You should wear suits more often." she ran her finger along his chest and stomach.

"Don't to that." he grabbed her wrist. "You know what is going to happen next.."

"Aren't you scared we'll get caught?" she asked.

"I like the danger." he smirked and moved one of his hands beneath her short skirt.

19:00.

"Girls, is everything okay?" the CEO entered the dressing room. All of us stood up and bowed, greeting him.

"Everything is great." I was the first one to speak because the other girls gave me pleading looks. Somehow I became the group's spokesperson, especially when they are stressed, nervous or uncomfortable. I don't really mind, but it means I always need to have an answer prepared for every situation.

"That's good, I'm happy to hear it." the CEO smiled. It was probably just me, but his smile seemed so fake. I smiled politely. "Work hard, I will be cheering for you."

"Thank you." we said together and bowed while the CEO walked away.

When he left I sighed in relief.

"He is scaring me." Yujin mumbled.

"Why?" I asked curiously. I am in bad terms with him, but his relationship with the other girls seem to be fine..

"I don't know, it's just the vibe I'm getting from him.." she shrugged.

~

Himchan was meeting B.A.P outside the showcase hall. He wanted to give the girls some privacy and he figured they'll want to spend some time with their families backstage without him or the guys interrupting them, so now all of them sat outside in the fresh air, hidden from the passerby.

"Yah, Bang, you should really stop being such a good boyfriend!" Himchan grumbled.

"Why?" Yongguk asked.

"Hyeri told Sey about your perfect date yesterday, so now Sey is mad at me for not doing the same for her!" Himchan pouted.

The other guys snickered while Yongguk looked amused.

"It's not my fault you don't treat your girlfrend well.." Yongguk retorted.

"I am treating my girlfriend right. It's just that you set the bar to high for the rest of us. You know how girls talk and they get jealous easily when they hear things like this.."

"You know, Hyeri never complained I'm not treating her well.." Yongguk decided to add fuel to the fire and in order to annoy Himchan even more.

"Your girlfriend is obssessed with you, she will like everything related to you." Himchan counterattcked.

"Sey just has a lot of requirements. She is a high maintenance girlfriend." the older male commented.

"He has a point." Daehyun told Himchan and high-fived Yongguk.

"I guess you better have that spa date soon.." Youngjae commented and Himchan frowned.

~

"Unnie!" a young girl, probably in highschool, stormed into our dressing room. She was followed by an older couple, which I assumed was her parents. I looked at the direction the girl was heading, although I could already tell who they were looking for..

"Hey, kiddoh." Eun Hee smiled and hugged the girl.

"I missed you." the girl said while hugging her.

"I missed you too." Eun Hee ruffled the girl's hair and than hugged her parents. After breaking the hug, the quartet talked animatedly about something.

I watched them, happy to see Eun Hee so happy. Her little sister resmble her a lot, and you can see the resemblance to their parents as well.

"Hyeri!" Eun Hee suddenly called me and I realized I was staring at them for too long. I looked at her shyly. "Come meet my family!"

I approached them slowly, embarrassed.

"This is Hyeri. Remember I told you about her?" Eun Hee exclaimed.

"You are their leader, right?" her sister asked. I nodded shyly.

"I'm Kim Hyeri, nice to meet you." I bowed.

"You don't have to be so formal with us.." Eun Hee's mother said.

"A.. Alright." I stuttered.

"You are older than our Eun Hee, right?" her father asked in a warm tone.

"Yes."

"Please take care of my daughter. I hope she is not causing trouble." Eun Hee's mother asked.

"Mom! Stop being embarrassing!" Eun Hee protested.

"Don't worry, she is great." I smiled brightly and looked at Eun Hee, who was now smiling as well. "I promise I'll take good care of her." I bowed.

"Hyeri!" Yujin called me. I looked at her direction and I noticed that her family has arrived as well.

"I'm sorry, I should go. Have fun and I hope you'll enjoy the showcase." I bowed once again and excused myself.

"She is a nice girl." the father commented.

"I know." Eun Hee smiled.

~

"Long time no see." a man in his forties greeted the CEO.

"Have you been doing well?" the CEO asked.

"Yes. Are you taking care of my daughter?"

"Of course." the CEO smiled.

"I don't think you are." the man said coldly and took out a gun, pointing it at the CEO.

"Did she say something to you?" the CEO tried to look unaffected.

"I don't know.. Is there something I need to know about?" the man asked, flipping the gun in his hand.

"N.. No.." the CEO stuttered.

"Good." the man smiled and put the gun back in his bag. "Make sure I won't have a reason to visit you again." the man smiled and walked away.

~

I joined Yujin and her family and she intoduced me to her parents and her older brother.

"Why didn't you tell me you have a pretty unnie?!" the brother exclaimed after the short introduction, accusing Yujin.

"Stop flirting with my friends!" she hit his head.

"Mom!" he whined and rubbed his head.

"Show respect to your sister's friends and co-workers." the mom answered and hit his head as well. I couldn't help but chuckle. I can see where Yujin got her attitude from..

"They are lovely, aren't they?" Yujin's father asked me while looking at them with adoration and love.

"Yes they are." I smiled. I want to look at my husband and kids the way he looks at his family.. They are lucky to have someone like him. You can see how much he loves them just by the way he looks at them.

"Anyway, if you want to have some good time, you can get my phone number from Yujin." the brother told me and winked. I started to blush.

"Nobody wants your number, your'e ugly." Yujin retorted. "She is going to think I have a weird family because of you!" she glared at him.

"It's okay, Yujin." I said, smiling. "And I'm sorry, I can't date at the moment." I apologized and bowed.

"Wait, so do I have a chance in the future?" he asked and Yujin hit his head again.

~

"Hyung, are you going to meet Sey's family?" Jongup asked.

"No." Himchan answered, trying to hide his disappointment.

"Why?" Zelo asked curiously.

"She haven't told them about us yet, so it's not the right time to tell them about it."

"Does your family know you are dating?" Youngjae asked.

"No."

~

After talking to Yujin's family I met Sey's parents. They were nice and you can tell they spoil her a lot.

I wanted to get some fresh air, but I was stopped on my way out by a man. I examined him. I've never seen him before, but somehow he looked familiar.. He looked like he is in his forties and he was dressed with luxurious brands.

"Can I help you?" I asked politely.

"You are Hyeri, right?" the man smiled.

"Yes."

"I'm Sumi's father, nice to meet you." he offered me his hand for a handshake. I accepted it.

"Nice to meet you, sir." I smiled and bowed.

"I want to apologize for Sumi's behaviour. I know she can be a handful at times.." he sighed. "It's just that her mother passed away when she was young and I took care of her by myself.. I tried to give her everything so she won't feel her mother's absence, but as a result she grew up to be a spoiled person. I'm sorry, it was my fault for not raising her properly."

"It's not your fault, I'm sure you did your best to raise her. And she is not causing problems, so don't worry. She is fine and she is talented and she loves what she does." I was flustered. I didn't expect to hear this kind of confession from him.. He seems like a nice person, so how did Sumi came out like this?!

"Thank you so much." he smiled warmly. "If she is causing problems please don't hesitate to tell me."

"Alright."

There was a short silence and I decided to break it before it gets uncomfortable.

"I should go, I need to take care of a few things.." I apologized.

"It's okay, I'm sorry for taking up your time."

"It''s okay." I smiled, "Nice meeting you." I bowed and walked away.

"Why were you talking to that creature?" Sumi asked, disgusted, after I left.

"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

~

I finally managed to get some fresh air and clear my mind. When I came back to the dressing room I watched the other girls, including Sumi, talking happily to their family and friends.

I felt a sting in my heart. It has been years since I left home and I'm fine with it. I don't feel their absence on a daily basis, but on holidays and on occasions like this, when you need your family by your side, it hurts me seeing everyone has their family next to them while I'm on my own. I can't help but feel jealous at how close they are to their family and how they are lucky to have a family that supports them. I wish I had that kind of thing too.. I wonder how it's like.

I wiped the tear that started to fall and turned around. I should  go wash my face or something and try to calm myself down.. I don't want the other girls to see me cry and I don't want to see their pitiful looks either.

I walked absentmindedly and bumped into someone.

"I'm sorry.." I looked up and saw Yongguk. I quickly wiped my tears, hoping he won't notice I'm crying.

"Be careful, babe." he smiled warmly. I hugged him tightly and burried my face in his chest. My tears slowly started to fall, wetting his shirt. Yongguk instinctively wrapped his arms around me, hugging me.

"What's wrong?" he asked softly. Instead of answering him I just cried harder. I felt safe being between his arms. it was like all the bad things disppeared and only the two of us existed. Yongguk rubbed my back gently, trying to calm me down.

When I kept crying Yongguk sighed. He could figure out what bothered Hyeri.. In fact, it was the main reason he came there. He took a deep breath.

"Babe, please look at me." Yongguk asked, and I slowly lifted my eyes to look at him.

"I'll be your family for today and forever." he said while staring into my eyes. I could tell he was sincere. My heart skipped a beat. He is so sweet. "Don't cry, otherwise your makeup artist will come scolding me for making you cry and ruin your makeup." he joked and wiped my tears with his hands.

"It's not like I'm doing it on purpose.." I sniffled.

"Just remember you are not alone, okay?" he cupped my face. "You have me, and I'm pretty sure the boys will be happy to be part of your family as well. You know they will do anything for your food.." his last sentence made me smile.

"Thank you."

"Why are you badmouting us? We will be her family even without the food!" Himchan exclaimed. I looked behind Yongguk's back and saw the rest of B.A.P standing there, watching us. I don't know how long they were standing there, but it was long enough to hear what Yongguk said.

"Right!" Youngjae agreed.

"Guys, noona is crying!" Jongup stated and pointed at me. I guess it was really obvious..

"Seriously, such a crybaby.." Himchan teased me.

"A group hug!" Daehyun declared and before I could react all of them wrapped me into a tight hug. I was squished between the six of them. Yongguk tried to protect me by enveloping me in his arms but it didn't help much because I was still trapped in the middle.

When they finally released me my hair was messy like I just got out of bed. The hairdresser is going to kill me..

"Look what you did!" Yongguk scolded the boys and tried to straighten my hair.

"It's prettier than her usual hairstyle." Himchan commented.

"Shut up!" I glared at him.

"And she is back." Zelo smiled while the other boys chuckled. I couldn't help but smile as well. They are the nicest kids I know.

"Are we interrupting something?" a familiar voice asked. I looked at the voice's direction and saw Mamamoo standing there.

"No." I smiled brightly. "Ignore those idiots." I pointed at B.A.P.

"Crybaby." Himhcan commented, trying to make fun of me.

"Nice to see you again." Yongguk greeted the girls and bowed. The rest of B.A.P followed.

"Same here." Mamamoo smiled and bowed as well.

"And you.." Hwasa said and approached me. "Congratulations on debuting!" she hugged me.

"Thanks." I smiled shyly and the other girls hugged me as well, congratulating me.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, surprised. I haven't really talked to them since I promoted with Yongguk, so I was surprised they were here. I didn't expect them to come.

"We heard you are debuting, so we thought we should greet you." Solar said, smiling.

"And we haven't seen you for a while." Moonbyul added.

"Sorry for not contacting you, it was kinda hectic." I apologized, embarrassed.

"It okay, we undersatnd." Wheein said.

"So, do we need to start being scared? Are you going to take our place?" Hwasa asked. I shook my head.

"We have a long way to go until we reach your level." I said.

"Are you going to introduce your group members to us?" Solar asked.

"Sure. Let's go." I smiled and led them to the other girls, who were looking curiously at us. I waved B.A.P goodbye before leaving them.

"You know, your boyfriend really cares about you." Hwasa whispered in my ear while we walked to the other side of the room, towards my group.

I blushed and looked at her surprised.

"Don't turn around, he is looking worriedly at you right now." she said when she saw my confused face.

"How did you know?" I asked quietly.

"It was obvious there was something going on between you two when you promoted.. It was hard to miss the between you two." she smiled.

"Can you please not tell anyone?" I pleaded.

"Sure." she chuckled. "Your secret is safe with me, but if he mess up.."

"Don't worry, I'll kick his ." I cut her off.

"Good." she lauhged. At that moment we reached my group members.

"Girls, meet Mamamoo." I told them and turned to Mamamoo. "This is my group members."

"Nice to meet you, I'm Sey and I'm in charge of rapping." Sey was the first one to speak and bowed.

The introduction went on and we talked for a while until it was time for us to get ready and Mamamoo went to take their seats.

20:00.

"Half an hour until we start! Get the last touch ups!" one of the staff members shouted. By now all our visitors left, so it was only us and the staff.

After the hairdresser finished fixing my hair I headed the restroom. I made my way to the ladies restroom without realizing I'm not alone.

When I wanted to leave my booth the door was locked. I twisted the key, but it was useless. It was like the door was locked from outside. This can't be happening.. Not now.

I need to calm down. Myabe I just didn't twist the key properly.. I should try again.

I tried several times, but nothing happened. I took a deep breath. I should scream, maybe someone would hear me.

"HELP! IS ANYONE THERE?!" I screamed as loud as I can. Silence. I knocked on the door and still nothing. I'm stuck.

20:15.

"Girls, have you seen Hyeri? She still need to do her makeup.." the makeup artist asked Yujin and Eun Hee. They shook their heads.

"Weird, I'm sure I saw her earlier.." the makeup artist mumbled.

~

I don't know how much time passed, but I was still stuck in the restroom. I knocked on the door and screamed repeatedly, but it seems nobody heard me.

Someone will figure out I'm missing, right? They can't start without me..

~

Yongguk was sitting in the concert hall when he recieved a text from Sey - "Is Hyeri with you?"

"No. What's wrong?" he typed back quickly.

"Nothing, I just didn't see her for the last couple of minutes and her phone is not with her."

Yongguk's face fell. It can't be what he is thinking about, right?

"Hyung, what's wrong?" Youngjae asked.

"I'll be right back." Yongguk said and got up from his seat, heading backstage.

~

"When did you last see Hyeri?" Jinu asked everyone in the room while pacing around impatiently.

"I did her hair earlier." the hairdresser said.

"And afterwards?" Jinu asked. Nobody answered.

"She probably run away because she was too scared to perform. So much for being the leader.." Sumi scoffed.

"She'll never run away." Sey glared a Sumi. "Something must have happened."

"Did you search the restroom and outside?" Jinu asked.

"I'll go look for her with some staff." Yongguk said. "The girls should stay here in case she'll return, they need to perform."

"Alright." Jinu said and Yongguk walked away with a few people.

"Yoona, in the meantime get Daehyun. Tell him to help Himchan stall time.. If it's not enough send Youngjae to help as well." Jinu ordered.

~

My breath was getting heavier and my vision became blurred. I was getting sweaty and tired.

"IS ANYBODY HERE?! I NEED HELP! I'M STUCK!" I tried to scream again and kicked the door several times. At this point I was getting really dizzy. I took another breath deep when everything turned black.

~

"HYERI!" Yongguk shouted in one of the hallways while looking around. When he reached the restrooms he debated with himself whether he should check the female ones or not. Eventually he decided to do it since it was an emergency. He knocked on the door and there was no answer. He decided to walk inside.

The moment he stepped inside he heard a loud thud. He scanned the cabins but everything was empty.. Until his eyes landed on the last one. The door was locked from outside with a plank. He moved it away and opened the door quickly.

Hyeri was sprawled on the floor in the small booth, sweaty and breathing heavily. Her eyes were closed and she was trembling a little. He quickly kneeled down and enveloped her. Now, when he examined her closely, he noticed she was pale.

"Hyeri.. wake up!" he shook her softly, trying to wake her up.

"Please wake up." he mumbled while fanning her with his hands so she can get fresh air. He positioned her body so she rested her head on his leg.

Hyeri slowly opened her eyes and Yongguk sighed in relief.

"It's okay, I'm here." Yongguk hugged her tightly, noticing the confused look she had. She stopped trembling, but she was still breathing heavily and sweating a lot. He used a toilet paper to wipe her sweat.

"Babe, do you know where we are?" he asked carefully and she nodded. "Good." he smiled. "Can you sit properly?"

Hyeri tried to get up but her body was weak and she stumbled.

"Easy there." Yongguk caught her before she fell. He carefully placed her on the floor, her back leaning against the wall.

"The.. Showcase." she mumbled weakly. He could tell how hard it was for her to speak at the moment.

"It will wait. Your health is more important." he reassured her and she closed her eyes, leaning her head backwards.

"Babe, look at me." he said softly and she obeyed.

"Let's take a deep breath, okay? Do what I do, inhale." he demonstrated and she repeated.

"Good, now exhale slowly." he demonstrated again and she followed.

After a couple of minutes of breathing exercises Hyeri's breathing came back to normal. She didn't tremble anymore and it looked like she stopped sweating as well. The color also came back to her face.

"Are you feeling better?" she nodded.

"I.. Was.. Stuck." she said quietly.

"I know. Someone locked you inside."

"I'm sorry.. I messed up." she lowered her gaze.

"It's not your fault!" he lifted her face so she'll look at him. She diverted her gaze and he sighed.

"Tell me when you are ready to get up and go back to the rest, okay? They are worried about you."

"I'm ready." she said and tried to get up. She was still a little weak, but she managed to stand up.

"You can't perform like this.." he commented.

"I am performing. I'm fine." she raised her voice, annoyed.

"Hyeri, you are weak and you just fainted. And what if you hit your head while collapsing?"

"I didn't hit my head and I'm fine now. Don't get involved in my business!" she stormed off. Yongguk sighed and followed Hyeri.

20:30.

When I reached the dressing room I noticed something was wrong. There was a strong smell of alcohol that started in the hallway, and when I stepped inside the room I figured out the source of it.

The drunk person turned around, smiling brightly. There is no way I won't recognize him..

"I finally found you, little sister.."

Chapter 156: Wow, I was blaming both of them at 1st, as things could’ve been handled so much better on both sides. I loved how Himchan & Sey reasoned with both of them, but Hyeri crossed a line once Yongguk apologized. I didn’t feel she necessarily deserved it, but I knew they both needed it.... sure the way he apologized, did seem like a back handed apology, as her kissing technique could’ve been discussed privately. But Hyeri towards Himchan, she needs to make this better, and of course, he hit below the belt, but she had consistently hit below the belt prior & then to hit him!!! I’m not sure how this is going to turn out, thank you for updating!!

Chapter 156: I still one hundred percent believe that this entire situation is one in which Hyeri is very much at fault. I don’t think Yongguk is in a position where Hyeri requires an apology and I don’t think Hyeri even DESERVES an apology. She completely blew a small and minor incident out of proportion.

I do believe that Himchan went slightly too far with the comment he made however Hyeri shouldn’t have been as horrible to him as she was.

Chapter 155: Welcome back!!!!!!!!!!! I was BEYOND happy to see the update, wow so much happened, where to begin? I see Hyeri & Himchan are still at each other’s throats, I do wish they could get along, and that Hyeri would see the validity in what Himchan said, but no matter what, I think time stopped when Yongguk said Sumi was a better kisser. I felt bad, that super slam, even if honest, that was the time to lie. Especially knowing Hyeri... I was shocked she would kiss him after that was said, and kept thinking why does kissing Yongguk keep coming up, even after he said she wasn’t as good of a kisser. .... sighs, once again, he’s storming out and even with his stupid honestly, I can’t say I blame him. Thank you so much for coming back & for updating,

Chapter 155: WOOP WOOP!! MY FAVE FANFIC IS BACK!!! And OMG this is spicy as hell. I just wish Hyeri would stop being a drama queen and finally realise that she needs to get some help and that Yongguk loves her.

Chapter 153: Thank you for updating despite your busy schedule. I truly hope that Hyeri is ok! She let a lot of things off her chest the night before, and while I do wish she would've thought of the impact her leaving like that would have, I hope they catch her in time before she does something that would change all of their lives. Regarding the comment I just read, there's a difference between constructive criticism & just plain being rude. While it's true, being factual or doing some research on weightier subjects is a good rule of thumb, most of us are adults that don't use fanfics as our barometer of social issues. Assuming what someone's language is, was completely unnecessary to state. You don't have to read the story, if you're a writer, you should understand what it takes to create, upload & continue a story remembering details from previous chapters...etc. If you're not a writer, perhaps you should put yourself in the author's shoes before you begin.
