Sixteen

My secret (내 비밀)

After crying crying with your grandpa that day, everything seemed a little better. Your grandfather mad sure to tell you he still loves you and also apologized about the past few days you have felt abandoned. It must've been hard for him too because seeing you reminds him a lot of your parents and you understood him. After all, who would understand him better than you, his family.

And the day after, you decided that it's time to move on. And it'll start today with a good breakfast and greeting the worried and sad workers in your manner.

Taking a deep breath, you pushed the doors open only to meet with the servants' shoked faces. It felts awkward, standing there with them without saying anything so you gave them a small smile followed by a "Good morning."

Most of them are all shocked, relieved and moved by your actions that some of them cried as they stood in line, greeting you back, happy that their little miss is back.

You felt bad for them thought, making them worry and sad with you. So you promised to make up with them someday soon.

Your grandfather told you about his busy schedules yesterday too so you weren't expecting to see someone in the dining room but when you got there, your grandpa was already there, sipping his usual coffee, a newspaper in his other hand. It made you feel like the old times and smile.

"Good morning Hee Young-ah." He greeted cheerfully, making you not regret going out of your room. "Join me for breakfast?" He asked playfully and you nodded your head excitedly before taking the seat Butler Richard pulled out for you.

"Thank you Richard." You told the servant with a smile and the usually serious old man smiled back, happy that his late mater's daughter is back.

"My pleasure Young Miss." he bowed and let you and your grandpa have the first meal of the day that , to your surprise, felt warm and filled with conversations and mild smiles.

Both you and your old man couldn't laugh ot loud like before yet, but you knew you're nearing in being able to do it again because you're there to help each other.

After breakfast, you accompanied your grandpa, who didn't want to leave you alone, to the front gate. He had to go to work now and you knew you couldn't be selfish so you cheered him on by assuring you'll be okay in the house with the servants and that you understand completely.

"Bye grandpa. Don't push yourself and be careful." you waved him goodbye as he entered the car. It made you feel nervous seeing him enter the car though, scared that the same thing that happened to your parents will happen to him but you brushed your fears aside, not wanting to worry anyone anymore.

The old man must've realized you unease and opened the windows, "Wait for me later. We'll eat supper together. Ne?" He told you in assurance and you returned the old man's smile by smiling back.

*Thank you, grandpa.* You happily nodded and watched the car go out of the front gate before going back to the mansion to prepare for a jog and maybe play around the mansion like you usually did before the accident happened.

It felts like forever when you went to play with your gadgets and time passed by too quickly that it was almost supper time when you checked the time. Gasping, you hurriedly took a shower and prepared for supper with you beloved grandpa. He just got home when you finished and you were happy you got to receive him and greet him welcome after the tiring day of work.

Your grandpa's too old to run a big business your family owns but no one had a choice. Your uncle's not to be trusted with the company and you and your cousins were too young to run it but still, you promised to yourself to help your grandpa in everyway you can until you can take over the company he worked hard for all his life.

Supper went well, you grandpa told you about how his day went and you did the same. Then both of you went for a stroll in the backyard and stayed in one of the benches there, admiring the scenery and the hard work of the gardeners in comfortable silence.

"Hee Young-ah." the elder called.

"Ne?"

“You know our family is one of the most successful and important in this country, right?” he asked and you could only nod your head with the sudden unusual question. Your family haven't exposed you with business matters yet and this will be those rare times your grandpa will talk about them with yourself involved.

"Want me to tell you of our family's biggest secrets?" he asked and you looked at him enthusiastically. Maybe because you're already Sixteen that he's letting you know the family's secrets. Your older cousins already knew about them but refused to tell you about it because of the rules. You felt left out whenever your family would have gatherings but you never let yourself be bothered by it because you'll eventually know it when you're older. And now, the day has finally come.

"YES!" You replied with a beam making the old man smile. At least he didn't have to worry about you, not being interested in the family matters.

"In our family, it is a tradition to cut all ties with the family of the heir once he or she turns sixteen. He or she would have to live independently until he or she graduates high school." he told. "The family would give him or her a good amount of starting money though; for a place to live and food for his or her first days but after that money is spent, the heir must fend for him or herself. He or she must work to have her own money and study at the same time until she graduates high school with her own strength."

"The heir could only go back to the family if he or she is able to graduate and with that, se or she would be able to inherit the family business." he continued. "This is done to make sure all CEOs of the Kwon Empire are able to understand what is like to have nothing before having everything. It will also help them realize their employees' situation since they will be working in a low degree job as well.

The future CEO would learn how to put himself in others' shoes and be humble too. Don't you think it's a great way of testing the future CEO's of the family company, Hee Young-ah?"

You nodded your head in response. "Did you and papa do that too?" you asked. Dots weren't that difficult to connect.

"Yes we did. In my case, I managed to graduate by working as a waiter in a porridge shop while your father graduated by working as an assistant in a law firm." he replied.

You tried to imagine living without Richard and Amanda and it made you frown. You don't even know where things are in your house and have to ask one of the maids to get what you need. "That must've been hard."

"Yes, indeed, my dear grand daughter." He said almost silently and you let silence linger for a moment as you both looked up at the starry sky. It wasn't strange that your grandpa told you this story and you knew what was coming up next but you still chose to wait for him to tell it to you.

You weren't worried about doing the test or tradition though. You're more worried about leaving your grandpa than that.

"Do you want to do it?" Old Master Kwon broke the silence and you paused a moment to think.

*If I want to be successful. I should pass this test. Grandpa is old and has to rest soon. I can't rely on him forever and I want to make him and my parents proud.* you said to yourself before standing up and turned to your grandpa giving him an assuring smile.

"I'll do it grandpa. I'll make you proud of me. You'll see." you told making the old man smile.

A little bit of sadness was seen in his eyes knowing that his one and only granddaughter will be away for two years and live a hard life but he knew, just like his son, your father, you will be able to do it and maybe surpass what your father did during his time.

"When do I start?" you asked. You're already sixteen and school would start soon.

"This coming school year." he answered, just like you've predicted.

"I still got a week until I start." you said. It's starting sooner than expected but with all the things that happened, you couldn't complain.

"Thank you for understanding and not throwing a fit like your dad did, Hee Young-ah." The old man joked and Hee Young chuckled at his words. "Are you tired or do you want to go to my office and discuss some details?"

"Let's go start, grandpa. The earlier, the better I prepare." You said and followed him to his office.

*This will be hard but I’ll make you all proud. Watch me Mama. Papa*
