My Single Aunt, Mae
Description
Jin hates how their fridge always gets too full whenever her aunt Mae pays them a visit. The old spinster has always been like that. Whenever she visits one of her sibling’s house, she would always have something to give. If not, she’ll be there only to cook them something.
Jin loves her aunt. Don’t ever mistake it for her not liking her aunt. After all, she’s her favorite aunt. But sometimes, she gets annoyed by the non stop nagging and chores her aunts gives her whenever she’s at their house cooking something for sure.
Jin loves her aunt to the bone. But out of her mom’s 9 siblings, she’s the most annoying one.
Jin wonders sometimes when she looks at her aunt. She’s beautiful despite of her old age. She has fair skin, best in doing house chores, super lady like boys in her age would die for. So why did her aunt ended up being alone all those 65 years of her life? Why people didn’t notice her?
Of course Jin knew it was because of her mom’s family situation back then. They were 10 siblings back then and the only thing that keeps their household was their father’s fishing pond. 9 out of 10 of those kids, including Jin’s mom, were studying. And of course, taking care of those kids needs time, money and effort. Jin’s grandma was young back then but she also need to help out in the fish ponds back then. That’s why her aunt Mae, the 3rd eldest was the one who sacrificed for the other siblings.
While the others study, she was the one who keeps the house, iron her family’s clothes and cooks their food so that the whole family of twelve will have warm food to go home to once the whole day of studying and labor are done.
Schools and transportation were impossible to combine back then, taking them students a day to go back and forth from their house to school. It was hard but with all perseverance and hard work, 9 out of ten of the Choi siblings were able to finish their studies.
Aunt Mae, despite of not being able to finish her studies, learnt how to read and write in grade school. She was content and never jealous of her brothers and sisters even when they got married and had their own families one by one, leaving their house, only leaving the two old parents and her in the big old house.
Years passed and Jin’s grandparents died, leaving aunt Mae alone. Still, despite of being alone and not having someone to lean on, the old lady still took care of her siblings until now that Jin’s generation has come.
Jin hated what happened to her aunt. But if it wasn’t for her sacrifice, maybe, she wouldn’t even be there. Just… sometimes, Jin wished her aunt has found someone, maybe if she exist back then, she would’ve helped her aunt study and maybe find her destined one too just like her mom. Oh how much she wish that.
Thing is, Jin should’ve been really careful of what she wish for.
