Zelo 40

B.A.P. Oneshots II

“Zelo, you’re going to be an oppa soon!” his mother sang.

The little boy looked up from his blocks and blinked. He shrugged and continued rolling the truck up and down the ramp. He made a little noise of content when his mom picked him up. “Umma,” he squeaked. She tapped his nose and he grinned.

“Are you ready to welcome your little sister home?”

            “Shishta?” he was confused.

“Yes. You’re going to be an oppa.”

Why did his mom keep calling him that? Zelo frowned. “Jellow,” he corrected her. She laughed and repeated the strange word again. His eyebrows furrowed. Was his mom trying to change his name?

He crawled away from her and went back to his blocks. This was too confusing to think about. He preferred playing. All Zelo knew was that his mom wasn’t around for the next three days and his grandmother came over. Once in a while he would ask for mommy but grandma would smile and tell him that he should prepare to be a big brother.

The words made Zelo’s head spin. He preferred not thinking about it and so he didn’t. One night, he heard the car drive in and ran to the door. He held out his arms, prepared for his mommy to finally pick him up but when she walked in, he saw that her arms were full.

He cocked his head. His dad bent down and swung him. “Was Junhong a good boy?” he giggled at the use of his real name and blew a raspberry and nodded his head. His grandmother kissed his cheek but Zelo turned to his mom.

Her attention was completely absorbed by the small thing in her arms. He reached out to poke it. “Junhong!” she scolded.

His lower lip trembled. Of all people, she never used his real name. He blinked his large eyes and let out a small wail. Zelo buried his face into his father’s shoulder and clung on. “Aish, baby,” his mom reached for him but he held on tighter to his dad.

“No, Zelo no want,” he mumbled, still sobbing. He was gasping for air and hiccupping.

“Do you want to touch your little sister?” she plead.

“Nooooo!” he screamed and suddenly,  another scream joined his.

She sighed. “I’ll take her upstairs.” And then his mom disappeared. Zelo’s heart broke and he rubbed his nose on his dad’s shirt, and whimpered as both his dad and his grandmother tried to console him.

“Look, here’s a teddy bear just for Jello,” his dad cajoled. “Don’t cry. Didn’t we tell you you were going to be a big brother soon? That was your little sister. She’s only three days old so you need to treat her really nicely.”

Zelo shook his head. That little sister took away his mom. His mom came downstairs and he immediately dived for his dad. She laughed a little and dragged him onto her lap. “Hey, do you want to say hi to her? She’s waiting to meet her knight in shining armor.”

“No knight,” he muttered bitterly. “Jellow.”

She mussed his curls, something he always loved and Zelo’s eyes squinted as he tried to not smile. “Are you sure? She’s just a little princess and she wants her big brother to protect her from all the monsters!”

“Monster?” he looked up, completely alert. He tugged on her pants. “Mommy, monster!”

She took the hint and brought Zelo to the nursery. The baby was wide awake, with her eyes slightly open. Zelo saw a large figure hunched over the crib and ran at it. He grabbed onto the monster’s leg and the monster growled back.

“Monster no touch little sister!” he protested as he pretended to zoom around the creature. It was when the monster laughed that he realized it was his dad. “Daddy! Wanna see!” he started jumping up and down.

His mom took his sister out from the crib and Zelo scrambled onto the seat to stare at it. He tentatively reached forward a finger and poked her in the nose. “Squishy,” he whispered.

She opened and he quickly pulled back, afraid she would cry but instead she let out a tiny yawn. Zelo watched her in fascination. “Ooh, pretty baby,” he whispered.

His mom hugged him close with one arm. “Yes, your sister is a pretty baby. Are you going to be a good oppa?”

Zelo nodded and took the baby’s fingers. “I am Jellow, your oppa!” he announced proudly. “Save you from monsters like Daddy.” He laughed.

The baby opened her eyes a little and gave a small noise. “She’s laughing!” his mom pointed out.

Zelo laughed and peered closer at her. “My pretty little sister,” he said.
