LXIII

Springfield

Sunggyu sighed deeply as he took in the scenery around him. Everyone was seemingly happy. However, he couldn’t be. He couldn’t shake off the feeling of being on edge. He could never relax. Not when he was this close to the mayor.

A woman came waltzing up to him, a smile on her face. He knew what she wanted and he for one wasn’t in the mood. He quickly pivoted and walked away, hoping that she was the type that gave up quickly. He turned, trying to see if he lost her as he took a few steps backward. His senses started to become sharper. There was a smell that hung in the air and penetrated his nose. It was a strong, nostalgic smell. Something about it made him tremble.

He was dazed as he took another step backwards. That’s when something hit his back and hard. He snapped out of his trance and shook his head to shake off the feeling he just had. He turned around, and he squinted. He saw a head of hair and a red dress but nothing else.

You looked up, your hand covering your forehead.

“I’m sorry.” He didn’t know what to do. He was not the soothing type so that was out. All he could do was apologize. He peered under your hand to take a look at the damage when he realized it. When he realized it was you.

For a moment, surprise crossed his face. He didn’t know what to think about how you looked right now. A part of him wanted to wrap you up in multiple layers of blankets. The other half of him just couldn’t take his eyes off of you. You looked so different from the last time he saw you. You seemed more…irresistible. He couldn’t stop the odd growing feelings inside of him.

You on the other hand had definitely noticed that Sunggyu was looking better than ever. Or maybe he looked the same and you just hadn’t seen him in so long you couldn’t help but think he looked attractive right now. Or maybe it was just his werewolf pheromones getting to you. As you thought it over more as he stared at you, practically boring holes into your frame, you had a feeling Sunggyu was always this good looking. So why hadn’t you noticed until now?

Before you could say anything, fortunately, or rather unfortunately, a deep voice interrupted the moment.

“Leader wolf, nice to see you again.” P.O appeared from your right. It took you a moment to take your eyes off of Sunggyu and look at him, Sunggyu being in front of you now had just been too surreal. It had been a month since you last saw him after all.

Sunggyu did not take well to P.O’s appearance. He narrowed his eyes at the hunter’s exterior, judging him for any tricks he may have had up his sleeve. P.O continued despite the stares.

“The first time we met we weren’t on very good terms” P.O threw his arm around your shoulders, “I’m afraid this time will be the same.” He threw a possessive glare at Sunggyu before leaning down and smiling at your blank face. He looked away from you slowly, back to Sunggyu, and his smile faded. His lip twitched, “I’ll be taking back what’s ours now so if you’d excuse us.” He dragged you away.

Sunggyu’s hand reflexively went forward to grab your arm and stop you from leaving with P.O. but that is when he remembered where he was right now. The mayor’s house. He couldn’t create a scene, not if he wanted the necklace that the mayor held onto.

You on the other hand were thankful for P.O showing up when he did but at the same time, you didn’t want to leave Sunggyu. However, staying to talk with him would not put you in good with the hunters.

“Thank you.” You said to P.O as he continued to walk with you through the crowd of people, farther and farther away from Sunggyu.

He looked down at you in his arms and quickly pulled away from you, “No problem.” He stopped walking and looked back to where Sunggyu once was, “That wolf guy’s actually pretty scary. I thought he would skin me when I showed up. He must be really pissed you left them.”

You nodded slowly in confirmation, “More like I didn’t tell him.” You stuck out your tongue timidly, something P.O found cute. So much so he almost over looked your words. Almost.

“Wait, you didn’t tell them? And you’re still alive to say that? Wow.” P.O looked you up and down indignantly. But then, your beauty hit him again just like when he first saw you. He shook his head before he started to think things that he wouldn’t be able to get out of his head, “I was going to ask how you did it, but never mind.”

That’s when he spotted Kyung and Jaehyo talking to a few girls. He got a wide grin on his face as he looked down to see you slightly discouraged from the encounter from earlier. He grabbed a hold of your hand and steered you through the crowd again. You questioned his actions as he pulled you but got no response.

Before you knew it, you were standing in front of Minah and one of her friends, who you remembered from school as being Sojin. Both of them seemed to be having a nice time talking to Kyung and Jaehyo, who both were actually smiling. That’s right, smiling. You almost couldn’t believe your eyes. Those two ice kings were actually happy once in a while. Of course, as soon as they saw P.O, their smiles got wider. And as soon as they saw you, their smiles faded completely.

You bowed politely, “Hello.” You greeted the two girls who did not reciprocate the action. In fact, the two girls got quiet suddenly. You shot a glare at P.O who brought you over.

Honestly, he just wanted to show you off and try to cheer you up a bit by letting you hang around with other girls. But if he told you that he was sure he’d get a good kick to the groin, so instead he started up a conversation with the two other girls.

“You two go to school with Hyunjoo?” He asked them, curiously. They both nodded together though remained quiet other than that motion of their heads. He rose an eyebrow and laughed, “What, is she the outcast there or something? The loner?” Their silence surprised him. He would have expected you to be someone who many people were attracted to, “You guys are joking right?”

“There’s nothing to joke about. If she wasn’t so cocky and stuck up, people might actually like her.” Minah’s sharp tongue showed itself suddenly as she rolled her eyes. Kyung, Jaehyo, and P.O were put off by the statement. They all stared at her indignantly, not believing she just said what she did.

“Cocky? You’re kidding right?” Kyung stood up for you, which was quite surprising. He pointed to you with his thumb, “This wimp is as scrawny and unconfident as they get. She’s cocky? You must be kidding.” Of course, you shouldn’t have expected him to be nice. Still, that he was saying anything at all was a miracle.

“We’re not!” Sojin suddenly interjected, “She’s always mistreating the senior oppas. If it wasn’t for her, school would be a much quieter place.”

“Yeah,” You mumbled beneath your breath, “talk bad about me like I’m not even here.”

“Quiet is boring. Isn’t it more exciting when there’s rumors to be spread?” Jaehyo shot back. It was as if he knew that the two of them were some of the main sources of the recent rumor mills about you. You saw the looks on their faces and couldn’t help but feel bad.

“Hey,” You tugged onto P.O’s sleeve, “it’s fine, okay? I don’t let those kinds of things affect me.” P.O looked down at you, his eyes showing sadness. He didn’t like that you had to put up with that kind of stuff. He was about to apologize for even bringing you over to listen to it when suddenly an accusing voice stopped him.

“Is that how you won over Sungyeol oppa? By looking into his eyes like that and waiting for him to turn into jelly and bend over backwards for you?” Sojin shouted a bit too angrily. P.O couldn’t believe his ears. Kyung had to hold himself back from smacking the girl outright while Jaehyo’s glass of juice was close to breaking point due to his strong grip.

“Me? Jelly?” You froze at the new voice you heard from behind you.

A/N:

Oh! Looks like Kyung and Jaehyo are actually standing up for Hyunjoo! Surprised?

Regretfully, Sunggyu couldn't spend much time with her. Though it looks like another person just showed up. I'm sure its obvious who that is. Are you all excited for the next chapter? :)
