XLIII

Springfield

You gave Zico a harsh gaze as he stared at you with rage filled eyes. If there was one thing you were sure of, it was that Sunggyu wanted anything but to break his promise towards the hunters. If there was another thing you were sure of, it was that Zico was more than capable of twisting situations to his liking. Thus, you didn’t believe him. He couldn’t blame you. After your history with him, he shouldn’t have expected you to believe everything that came out of his mouth.

Though for some reason, you found yourself believing him. The longer you stared into his eyes the more sure you were that his words were true. You looked away from him and breathed out, “Is that what you’re looking for? They didn’t come here. That I can promise you.”

Zico let out a sarcastic laugh. “Because your promises actually mean something?” He questioned you cruelly before going up the stairs of your house anyway.

You sighed at his stubborn temper. Instead of saying anything more to him, you went back to your room and climbed into your bed. You heard him pacing around the house like a mad man as he opened doors and searched closets but you knew he wouldn’t find anything. If you had a werewolf in your house, you wouldn’t have let him in at all. You slowly closed your eyes as you felt sleep coming onto you again.

Then, you heard his footsteps come to a halt. The house went silent. You couldn’t help but get a knowing smile on your face. “Did you find anything?” You asked mockingly towards him, who you knew was now standing in front of the doorway to your room. “Any wolves hiding in the drawers or the sink cabinets?”

You heard him growl in annoyance and you had to keep yourself from laughing. Zico may have been a big, bad, wolf-killing hunter but he was too easy to tease when he was wrong about things.

You flipped around to face him while you lay in your bed, “Did you?” You asked him again with the straightest face you could muster.

His frown made his answer clear. However, he quickly rebounded, “I know what I smelt.”

You pulled the covers off of you and sat up in your bed, looking at him, trying to figure him out. He looked frustrated and alarmed. You were sure that this was more than just about the werewolves breaking their promise. “Did something else happen Zico?”

He flinched a bit, as if he had just been awoken from a daze. He met your eyes and clicked his teeth together, “No. Forget it. My mistake. It was probably my imagination.”

Your eyes widened at his confession. “Wait what?” You asked, trying to get him to say the words “my” and “mistake” in the same sentence again. He didn’t answer you and turned to leave. You got up from your bed quickly and followed him down the stairs, “Zico.” You peered over his shoulder, trying to read his facial expressions. “Hey hey Zico.” You called again as you tried to look over his other shoulder. You still got nothing as the two of you finally reached the door.

“Have a nice night sweetheart.” He murmured before closing the door behind himself. You blinked a few times at the place he just was, trying to recall the events that just took place. Zico came bursting into your house only to say he was wrong about doing it? You thought you must have been dreaming and pinched your cheek. When you felt the shockwave of pain through your face, you knew this was real. You quickly opened the front door but Zico was nowhere to be found. You rose an eyebrow at his actions but then got a bit angry.

“Have a nice night Sweetheart?” You mimicked his tone mockingly, “It would’ve been nice if I wasn’t half scared to death for no reason.” You puffed air out of your nose before the chill of the night air started to make you get goosebumps on your arms. You trembled in reflex before closing the front door.

“Morning.” A voice rang to your left. You, startled by the sudden noise, stumbled backwards. The owner of the voice got a frown on his face, “I didn’t sneak up on you or anything.” He said it as if he was planning to sneak up on you later, which brought a silly smile to your face.

“Sorry Sungyeol, I was just thinking about something.” You mumbled as you continued to walk. Sungyeol walked behind you, not wanting to ride his bike, while steering his bike forward. You stopped dead in your tracks and spun towards him with a serious expression on your face. Sungyeol was almost surprised and jumped back since he didn’t think you would ever look at him like that. “Did you go out hunting last night?”

Sungyeol’s eyebrows scrunched together in confusion. He titled his head as though he didn’t understand your question. It took a moment for it to register in his head. Did he hunt last night? “No, Dongwoo, Sungjong, Woohyun, and I went down to the lake. We hung out there until early this morning. Sunggyu, Myungsoo, and Hoya were home talking about the whole “Minah” plan thing.” Sungyeol, even though he had never actually talked to Minah, couldn’t help but be put off by her presence everytime she approached the pack to talk to Myungsoo.

You mouthed an “oh” and nodded your head in understanding. Though that still left you thinking about Zico last night. He was so sure of himself last night that you were sure that it couldn’t have been a mistake. In Springfield, there were no mistakes. No misconceptions. Besides the average rumor here and there, most of what people heard was true. You turned to look at Sungyeol again, who was messing with the brakes of his bike as though something was wrong with it. You didn’t even question yourself on this one. The werewolves did not break their promise to the hunters, but then what was going on?

Suddenly, your phone rang. Sungyeol looked towards you and caught you in the act of staring at him. You gave him a sheepish smile and turned away to answer your phone. It was from an unknown number, which was just your luck. Caught staring at a werewolf due to telemarketers. You sighed as you answered the phone anyway to avoid having to talk to Sungyeol about why you were just oogling him.

“Hello?” You said.

“Hyunjoo?”

“Who is this?” You questioned. You vaguely remembered the voice but you were not sure from where.

“Thank god, Hyunjoo! I’m so glad you answered the phone!” The voice sounded more than a little bit relieved.

“P.O., Lemme see the phone.” You heard a voice say from the background. You heard the sound of rustling before the phone stopped humming from movement and returned to normal. “Hyunjoo, this is Taeil. I don’t know if you remember me or not but,”

“Taeil?” You questioned but then you remembered. His baby face flashed in front of your eyes. “Taeil!” You said again except this time you sounded more sure of yourself.

“Yeah, though this isn’t the time to introduce myself. Listen, you need to get down here.”

“Down where?” You questioned.

“Down to our house. It’s an emergency, Zico and B-Bomb are-“

Taeil was interrupted by a loud roar in the background. A roar you recognized as the same tone of voice as the person who intruded into your house last night. It was Zico. Zico was obviously throwing a fit in the background. His roars were followed by an assortment of voices who you recognized as U-Kwon, P.O., Kyung, and Jaehyo.

They were yelling at each other frantically.

“Keep him down while I put antiseptic on it!”

“You don’t think I’m trying?”

“Put cloth in their mouths so they don’t bite off their tongues!” Taeil yelled knowingly at them.

You heard the sound of bones cracking back into place and your whole body trembled.

“We need you to bring us some more bandages. Alcohol too if you don’t mind. ” Taeil told you. You rose an eyebrow at his request. You heard another yell that you recognized as B-Bomb’s. Your body shook in fear of what he was going through right now. “Also, we need you to bring one of your werewolf friends.”

Your eyes widened at that last statement. You quickly wanted to refuse but when you heard B-Bomb yell again, you knew that there was no time to spare thinking about things. He had saved your life. You owed him. Besides that, he was your friend.

“Hurry.” Taeil uttered before he hung up the phone.

You pulled the phone away from your ear and stared at it.

“Hyunjoo?” Sungyeol called to you. He hadn’t listened in on your conversation, he didn’t want to have to report anything back to Sunggyu about you hanging out with the hunters again. Though from the look on your face now, he wished he would have.

You turned towards him with pleading eyes, something he already didn’t like the looks of. You bit your lip in worry.  You put on an impish smile as you raised your hand into the air and pinched your index finger and thumb together, “Sungyeol, I need a small favor.”

A/N:

Looks like it wasn't Infinite who trespassed! Not Myungsoo nor Sungyeol returning Hyunjoo's scarf.
