Hide and Catch

Meeting By Coincidence

About three hours later we finally made it to the camping site. We had driven for two hours, to get away from the urban area of London and the surrounding towns and into the countryside. The whole way, I had been squished between Chanyeol and Baekhyun – not that I minded. They had been all smiles and jokes and we had played ‘I spy’ with Sehun, Tao and Kai. When we eventually got off the van, my legs and back hurt from being cramped for so long. I was grateful for being able to stretch my limbs and get rid of the ache.

“Wow! This is so nice!” Sehun yelled, running past us and across the lush, green grass. He flopped onto it on his back and smiled happily. Lu Han joined him and flopped down on top of Sehun. “Ah, hyung! You’re heavy! No, STOP!” He squealed like a little kid as Lu Han started tickling him. I smiled as I watched them.

“You look like a happy mum watching her kids play.” Chanyeol said, coming up beside me. I turned towards him and grinned.

“It’s a bit like that. They’re so cute.” I said, turning my gaze back towards the duo. Chanyeol laughed next to me.

“You ok with being dragged here like this?” He asked me. I looked at him.

“Yeah, I’m totally fine, don’t worry. I was just worried about…bugs and stuff so…” I trailed off, not wanting to tell him the real reason I didn’t want to go (Kris), but what I said wasn’t a lie so it was fine.

“Don’t worry! I’ll save you from the bugs!” He replied gallantly. I laughed at his noble expression.

“Ah, Chanyeol, you never fail to amuse me.” I said and ruffled his hair, although I had to stretch a bit to do it. He lowered his head for me and laughed, looking at the pout that appeared on my face from not being able to reach his hair.

“And you never fail to look cute.” He replied, with a soft smile. I felt a little heat creeping into my cheeks. The moment was cut short by someone clearing their throat behind us. We turned around to look at Kris, who was holding a number of bags in his hands.

“You could help, you know, Yeol.” He said, looking at the younger guy.

“Ah sorry, hyung.” Chanyeol ran towards the van. Kris held my gaze for a second and then walked away. What was that all about?

I tried to help the boys unload the luggage, but every time I went near the van, someone would shoo me away saying they could handle it. Eventually I gave up and sat under a big tree, joining Daesuk oppa. He was on the phone to someone. Once he finished, he turned around and smiled at me.

“You looking forward to this?” He asked.

“Uh…yeah, very much so.” I replied, trying to sound enthusiastic.

“How’s your ankle now, Sirrah?” He asked, looking concerned. I was again struck by the worry all these guys were showing me even though they had known me for such a little time, and I probably didn’t mean much to them.

“It’s good now, oppa. I can even run on it.” I said smiling, and he smiled back at me. “Are you staying here with us?” I asked.

“No, I’m going to wait till you guys have settled down, and then I will leave. I’ll come to pick you kids up tomorrow morning.” He answered.

Once all the luggage and food was out of the van, Daesuk oppa said goodbye to all of us, telling us to behave and then left. Our little area was on a clear patch of grass, but it was near the woodland that surrounded the campsite. Sehun, Tao and Kai came out from the trees and towards us.

“Hey guys, we should play hide and seek in there!” Kai said, excitedly.

“Sounds like fun. Why not?” Xiu Min replied.

“Why not? Because we aren’t five years old anymore.” Suho said.

“Oh who cares, hyung? It’s not like anybody is watching us so a bit of childish fun does no harm!” Baekhyun said.

“Then let’s go!” Tao yelled and pumped his fist in the air. Everyone got up started heading towards the woods. Tao ran over to Kris and dragged him up off the floor when he refused to get up. “Gege! Get up! Stop being so lazy!!” He whined, pulling on Kris’ arm. When Kris realised that Tao wasn’t going to give up, he sighed.

“Ok, ok, I’ll get up. Let go of my arm before you pull it out.” He said and got to his feet.

We got into the woods and we tried deciding who would be seeking, and who would be hiding.

“Won’t this be too easy?” Chanyeol asked. “I mean, some of us are a little too big to hide behind these scrawny trees.” He said, scratching his eyebrow. I laughed.

“Well how about…we play…hide and catch instead?” I suggested.

“Hide and catch?” D.O asked, widening his eyes even more. That boy and his eyes.

“Yes, that’s what I said. It’s basically hide and seek, but there's a home base included. When someone is found, the seeker and the hider have to race to home base. The first person who doesn’t make it to the home base before the seeker is the next seeker. The last person to be found is exempt from seeking completely and if everyone makes it to home base before the seeker, they have to repeat their turn.” I explained.

“So say if I was seeking, and everyone made it to home base before me, I would have to seek again?” Lay clarified. I nodded.

“That sounds awesome! Let’s play that.” Chanyeol said. “Now how do we choose who’s going to be seeking.”

I reached down and plucked a blade of grass out of the floor and held it up and then told the others to get their own. I didn’t tell them whether it would be shortest or longest that would be the seeker, so that they didn’t cheat. We measured them. We had to repeat the process a number of times because some of them kept getting the same length. Eventually it was down to between Chanyeol and Kai.

“Oooh no! I hope it isn’t Jongin hyung…he’s too fast!” Sehun moaned.

“Hey, I’m fast too!” Chanyeol retorted.

“Yes, but not as fast as Jongin.” Suho laughed. Kai looked smug. I bent down and grabbed another two blades of grass and held them out to the two.

“Ok, whoever gets the shortest one is seeker.” They both eyed each other and then took the grass out of my hands. They held them up together and it was pretty obvious who the loser was.

“Noooo!” Sehun started running already. We all laughed as we watched his retreating figure. I took Kai and turned him around to face a tree. Zara was wearing a thin scarf around her neck which I took as well.

“Hey! That’s mine!” She called.

“Yes, I know, Zara but I need something to mark home base with.” I told her as I wrapped the scarf around the thin trunk of the tree.

“Ok, put your arms up, and count to a hundred. NO PEEKING!” I told Kai.

“Arasseo, noona. I’m going to catch you first.” He turned around and smirked at me. I turned his head back around.

“Yeah, sure, sure. Everyone ready?” I asked turning around to Zara and the boys. They all nodded. I poked Kai. “Ok, start counting.”

“Hana, dul, set, net, daseot…” The countdown began and all of us scrammed. Chanyeol grabbed my hand as we started running.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“I know a place we can hide.” He said and grinned at me.

“Chanyeol, that’s not clever! If he finds one, he will find the other too!” I said and let go of his hand. He pouted but nodded and then ran off in the opposite direction. I found a thick oak tree and ran towards it, ducking behind. Kai was now on 70. I looked to the side and found Kris hiding behind a tree nearby. I laughed at the sight. His long, lean body was completely hidden by the tree, but he kept poking his head out to see if Kai was coming or not, just like a kid. He turned and caught my eye.

KRIS’ POV

This was ridiculously childish but I felt excited anyway. I hadn’t done something like this in a long while. I peeked out from behind the tree to see where Kai was and saw Sirrah crouching behind a big tree. She was grinning at me. I smiled back. I thought about going over to her, but it would be best if we stayed separate. Kai finished his counting and declared he was coming. Sirrah got to her feet and flattened herself against the tree. It was completely silent all around us, except for the shuffling of Kai’s footsteps. I cautiously looked out from the tree. Kai was heading straight towards us. I moved back to see Sirrah was already watching me. I pointed towards Kai. Her eyes widened as she understood what I was saying.

“Come out, come out, wherever you aarree!” Kai said loudly. “Noona, I know you’re around here somewhere!” He called, his voice getting louder as he came nearer. Sirrah’s eyes went even wider and I couldn’t help but chuckle silently. Kai went around the left side of her tree and Sirrah moved against the tree on the opposite side. It was as if she’s in a crime movie where the murderer has followed her into the woods and now she’s hiding from him. She shuffled slowly to the right when suddenly she stepped on a twig which cracked under her foot. She stopped and clamped a hand over . Definitely like a movie. Where’s popcorn when you need some?

She moved quickly to the right, but was confronted by Kai and she shrieked. He had a huge grin on his face as he grabbed her wrist. “I told you I would find you first, noona!”

Sirrah pushed him backwards gently in an attempt to get away, but Kai’s foot got caught on one of the tree roots and he tumbled backwards, releasing his hold on Sirrah’s wrist in the process. She spun around and started sprinting towards me. My eyes widened as she came my way. Why are you coming here?! You’re going to get me caught too! I moved back into the tree as she neared, hoping desperately that Kai wouldn’t see me. I heard Kai grunting as he presumably got to his feet. Sirrah whizzed past me in a blur, and I swear a blast of air went past me. A second later another burst of wind hit me as Kai shot past – they were that fast. “I saw you by the way, Kris hyung!” Kai yelled as he chased Sirrah. I sighed but didn’t bother running after them since I knew I wouldn’t make it to home base before Kai. I followed them at a leisurely pace.

I watched Sirrah run. She was like a cheetah – smooth and streamlined. She glided effortlessly around the trees as she wove her way in and out of them to avoid hitting them. Her hair was flowing behind her in long, dark waves, her white dress billowing in the whipping air. It was an impressive sight. She was focused on the blue scarf that marked home base. She didn’t look back even once. Kai was right on her tail though, chasing her with fluid movements – he looked like he was gliding over the floor. He reached his hand out and grabbed a lock of her long hair. I guess Sirrah felt the tug and sped up even more, as Kai lost his grip on her hair. A few seconds later she slammed into the home base tree, and Kai joined her less than a second later. They were both panting as they tried to catch their breath. Sirrah slumped down against the tree and Kai flopped onto the floor. They were still breathing hard when I reached them. Kai looked towards Sirrah.

“Noona…I didn’t know you were that fast. I thought I would catch you easily.” He looked astonished.

“I thought you would catch me too.” She laughed, huffing.

“That was impressive though.” I said looking down at both of them. They looked up at me.

“Kris hyung, you didn’t even bother running!” Kai complained.

“Well what was the point? You were already miles ahead of me when you bothered to tell me you had seen me.” I told him.

“True.” He grinned.

“Uh, I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to lead him to you. It was just the shortest way to the base and I didn’t think before running.” Sirrah said with an apologetic smile. I smirked at her.

“Sure, no problem – but I’m not going to let you off in the next round, since I’ll be seeking.” I said calmly. Her expression dropped and I couldn’t help but laugh. I sat down next to her as Kai got to his feet.

“Ok, I have to find the others.” Kai said and set off back into the woods. Sirrah and I watched him go. I caught sight of a white jacket disappearing behind a tree – Baekhyun. I turned my head towards Sirrah to see she had already been watching me. She quickly turned her head away and pretended to be interested by the dirt on the floor. There was an obvious pinkness creeping into her milky cheeks. I smiled to myself.

This is going to be fun.
