Chapter 2: How it All Began

It was February 14, 2011. Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day was kind of a big deal, well at least for couples. In Canada, I would give out cards and chocolate to everyone in my class. It was a tradition. By grade 7, boys started sending flower grams to girls. Today was a day to celebrate love, couple were all in matching outfits with their hands intertwined together.
“OH-MY-GOD! It’s Infinite!” Soo-jung screamed as I held onto the wall with all my life. It was my first time skating and even after 30 minutes on ice, I was still glued against the wall.
“Infinite?” I questioned, confused by what she was so excited about. I had only moved to Korea 2 weeks ago, so I was not fully updated on all the new trends here in Korea.
“Infinite! Oppa!! Look here!!” She screamed again and quickly skated away towards the crowd.
“Wait! You were –“ I called but she was already too far.
Soo-jung was my cousin/best friend. Every summer when I visited Korea I would spend it with her. After moving to Korea, Soo-jung and I have been inseparable. We went everywhere together, I was even going to attend the same high school as her, until I realized she was enrolled in an Arts school. The type of school where wannabe singers, actors, and rich kids went. I on the other hand was more focused on academics: Calculus and Chemistry are more my cup of tea.
I scanned the ice rink looking for the closest exit. I was dying to walk on ground again. Turning my head back and forth I finally spotted the exit. It was on the other side… For someone who could skate that was not a far distance, but for a wall sticker like me it meant another ten minutes of slowly dragging myself along the wall.
Once I reached the halfway mark, there were girls blocking my way.
“Excuse me” I said politely in Korean. No one moved. I said it a few more times before I ran out of patience.
“EXCUSE ME WOULD YOU PLEASE GET OUT OF MY WAY?” I yelled in English.
Everyone stopped and turned to me. It was rare to find a fluent
