Athena’s POV

The place is so busy so are the people. I continuously stir       my cocktail drink with the cherry. I

sigh to myself.

What is it I’m doing? Another boring party for me...

            “Whoops....don’t you think it’s strange that we keep on seeing each other by

chance?”Jaejoong said as he hops at the seat beside me.

            “Why are you here? You followed me again?” I asked.

He smiles.

            “You’re so confident. Why would I do that? JYJ was invited since we sang your drama’s

OST.”

I didn’t answer.

            “What are you doing here alone in the bar? The other casts are there....it’s a victory party

for the drama so the lead actress should be socializing right?”

I shrugged my shoulders.

            “Are you feeling well now?”

            “A lot better now thanks to you....uh...did you just ask that? You are concern about me

now, don’t you?” he teased.

I gave him a “duh” look.

            “You’re not getting annoyed nor yelling...does it mean..”

            “Would you leave me alone when I tell you to?”

            “No.”

            “Exactly, so why would I waste time yelling?”

            “So you won’t stop me again from seeing you if I want to?”

            “There’s no need to do that. Simply because I’m sure that you’ll be out of the door the

second you realized what you are getting yourself into.” I said giving that as my final warning but

he smile even wider.

            “Okay...let’s see..”

I let him accompany me and we talk.

            “So tell me, that face thing you told me last time...that’s your pick up line right? I bet a lot

of girls heard that from you.”

            “No...I haven’t told anyone about that aside from you. That is one of my principles in life.”

He says.

            “Principle...my ..”

But something inside me wants to believe him. Correction...not wants but totally convinced.

            “Why are you saying such vulgar words? That’s very unladylike.” He commented.

            “Don’t you know I’m like this? I even cuss when I want to....Oh..ottokajji, you don’t like

that, do you?”

Turning him off...why didn’t I think of that?

            “I don’t hate it...in fact, that makes you more charming. You are not the type to play nice.

You are comfortable to show the real you in front of everybody which I like.”

I mentally fell from my seat.

            “Which planet are you from?” I shook my head lightly because I couldn’t contain my smile.

He never fails to amaze me in such ridiculous way.

            “That’s it...finally, I get to see your smile for the first time tonight..” he said.

            “Don’t get it wrong...The truth is I feel sorry for you because you are so simple minded..” I

chuckle with him.

We toast for a drink. Smiles are still on our faces.

            “What do we have here? Athena! Why are you wasting yourself here in a corner?

C’mon..dance with me.”

A guy suddenly came up to me. He’s a model and also a rookie actor. I remember that he was

introduced to me by a PD a few days ago.

            “No, thanks. Just ask other girls to dance with you.” I refuse.

            “Don’t play hard to get...everyone here knows you well...”

I smell a strong scent of alcohol in his breath. He’s already drunk so I let it go. He looks at Jaejoong

who’s sitting next to me.

            “Is this your new arm candy? He looks sissy...you’ll just get bored with him.” The man

says with a bedevil smile on his face.

            “Come with me...we’ll have a great time.”

I still ignore him.

            “C’mon, you !”

            “You shouldn’t address her like that.”Jaejoong seems irritated by that but I raise my arm to

stop him. I don’t want to make it big.

            “Stop it Jaejoong. He’s just drunk. Don’t meddle with it. I’ll handle it myself.” I warned him.

            “Yeah...that’s right. Stop butting on other people’s business. Go find your group mates.

You bunch of sissies!”

He’s nasty that I want to slap him myself.

            “Let’s go babe..I’ll blow your mind tonight.” He says and grabs my arm.

            “What the?! Let me go!”

            “She says she doesn’t want to so you better let her go.”Jaejoong says.

The man smirks and everything happens so fast after that.

Jaejoong removes the man’s hand on my arm and give him a punch to the face.

            “Stop...stop it!” I yelled at them. The people are now looking at us.

The man hits him too but Jaejoong throws two more punches back. Kang Dong Won sunbae,

together with JYJ other members approaches to stop them. I brush my palms against my face

because of embarrassment.

We had a closed door talk. The PD’s, the man, Jaejoong, and me. Thanked God, everyone is quick

to prevent anyone from taking pictures. Even the press that were in the party had been handled

by the PD. They paid them so no news about this incident would surface.

I looked at the man. He got bruises and his nose bled. He’s now sober so he kept on saying sorry

for what happened. He doesn’t want his image to be ruined since he just started acting so he

promised to stay away and won’t do it again.

We headed to the door.

            “Ms. Athena, I’m so sorry...that was so foolish of me.”

I stopped and look at his face.

            “Do you really mean it?” I asked.

            “Yes. Just tell me what I could do to make it up on you.”

            “Just stay still.” I said and my palm landed on his face.

            “That is for calling me . Don’t ever think that I would let it pass that easy without

getting even.”

Then I slap him again. He was speechless.

            “And that is for dragging an innocent person like him in this.”

Jaejoong was astonished as he heard that. I walked out of that room.

Jaejoong’s POV

I felt the side of my lips that has a slight bruise.

            “Isn’t your hand aching? He has a rough face..”I tried to joke.

            “Mind yourself..”

            “Ah..this? Don’t worry…it’s not painful at all…That guy doesn’t know how to punch.” I

said smiling.

            “Not painful? Who are you kidding? Don’t you know how your face looks like now?!” she yells.

I was startled. I had seen my bruise earlier and I know that it doesn’t look that bad.

            “Do I seem to be a helpless person to you? You think I can’t take care of myself?”

            “It’s not…”

            “Why do you have to meddle like that? What were you thinking?!”

            “I couldn’t just watch you being treated like that.”

            “What did you get from it? Do you want me to think that you’re my hero? Are you willing

to go that far just to have my attention?” she said angrily.

            “Do you think I did that just to have your attention? Am I not allowed to protect the girl I

like?” My emotion burst that my tone rises.

            “I keep telling you how much I like you…don’t you hear me? Why do you continuously

ignoring me when we both know that you feel something for me too?”

She often sounds sarcastic and hostile but her eyes sell her out. Her words might be harsh but her

touch and kisses are gentle. I know that she cares about me but I just don’t know why she tries

hard to deny it. Both of us were silent for few moments.

            “Athena…” I held her shoulders and turn her.

            “What you are making me feel..I don’t like it...I don’t need it...I worked so hard to shut it

off. I’m afraid..I’m afraid to feel again. I might not be able to stand up again for the second time.”

Her eyes shines like crystal because of the tears she’s holding up. Her voice expresses fragility.

                        “I know how afraid you can be, because giving your heart to somebody is like

giving that person the pass to crush it in the most painful way. But don’t let that fear stop you to

look for happiness. Don’t enclose yourself in a box because you’ll miss that most beautiful thing in

life.”

She smiles bitterly.

            “You’re so naive...as if everything is that simple.” She freed her shoulders from my grip.

            “Athena, if you’ll just trust.....”

            “I trust only myself.”

I feel speechless hearing those words.

            “Happiness? It’s just an illusion made by people but it doesn’t really exist. I’ve been to hell

because the world turned its back at me and that...that is the only existence I know.”

I stare at her back as she left. I couldn’t help but wonder what causes her to be this way.

            Athena...why do you have to be so complicated?
