Time for song from one of my fav movies! xD
I was playing music shuffle thingy...and came across a song from this movie that reminds me again, of how much i love this movie and why...(ok, though it's hard to specifically list out why, i just love it)
And how it reminds me again of how much a 90s junkie i am...
I mean, my fav music are of 90s, so are my fav movies-Malay,Chinese,Tamil, Hindi, English...you name it...sorry, not a big fan of Kmovies...find them very overrated by kpop fans who just worship all things Kr. but who knows abt their 90s movies since i never checked out those. might be good...
And Love in the Time of Twilight, is easily one i regard very dearly (or i wouldn't have created a poem just as triggered after rewatching this movie, would i? not like the poem indicates anything about the movie, just my feelings for it)
I'm not planning to give you a detailed synopsis or analysis since you can find mounts of those just by googling...but I'll talk about what i feel about the movie...at the same time, i have been thinking of what song should be my 100th translation....well, never in my dream i would think i would dare to trans this...since another language to add n i have no confidence at all...but i was subbing the song accordingly to the subtitle from the movie that i have...and i realized a line was missing so i look for it...and then i somehow realize some of the lines are really different than official trans in the movie that feel simplified? idk...maybe i'm the wrong one...but i like to go as literal as possible rather than cut it all down just to deliver the final message. every word contributes to emotion, and songs, to me is about emotions.
I first watched it a lonnngggggg time ago, and i find it really charming without being tryhard, and the beautiful music score doesn't help to ease the fluttery feels. Also the beautiful cinematography and main characters(i mean a nerdish petty guy wearing glasses who's a bank clerk and a loud tomboyish-without-looking-like-tryhard girl who's an underdog but in-a-way-privileged opera actress...what can go wrong? i love the character types...and how refreshing they feel despite not being too unfamiliar), haha. I love how humour is peppered all the way be it matter-of-factly, dumbly or satirically, but at the same time, it doens't take away the seriousness and intensity of the core story, even if the humour gets a little tiring/repetitive after awhile. I feel they help to tone down factors that could lead to cheesiness. Some people or more might complaint that for a romance genre it lacks romance, but i find it at a very perfectly right amount to make you able to feel it, rather than see it. Even the story of heroine's dad singing alone, is something i find romantic. Then again, maybe it's cuz i'm of the oldies generation...There are some poignant moments too albeit very brief, but they're done powerfully that even small fragments of moments in a scene can remain in my mind and affect me. And i looove the setting of Affinity Day, and the dying Chinese opera/traditional theatre group...the former makes for a beautiful dreamy and obviously-calling-for-fate backdrop, while the latter makes for a very lowkey but easily touching n cozy one. Dreamy is a characteristic i really am attracted to i guess...haaa, despite my always realistic take on things and my hate for romanticizing things...and though i'll admit too, that being in love with a ghost isn't a very appealing idea in reality...:x
Admittedly there are a few more favs i can think of when it comes to Chinese movies, and the fact that Chow Sing Chi old movies with his (mostly)slapstick jokes will never get tiring for me, and also the fact that this movie has its flaws too...like when it makes me feel the dragginess at some points....but if i'm asked of my fav movies(including all languages i watch)...this still easily goes into my top 5...maybe even higher...yes, it may not be your 'perfect-in-every-sense' movie...but...who cares, it is, to me. :p
