Waking up from the Happy Fairytale
Romantic Street: A Detour To DestinyYuri POV
“Halmunee! Halmunee! Look! I caught a fish!”
“Very good my dear Yuri.”
“See how great I am, Halmunee? I can even drive the truck now too! I’m awesome, right?! Haha!”
“Yes you are, my dear.” She pulled me and kissed me on the forehead. “You are the greatest of all. Your mom and dad will be so proud of you.”
“If only they were alive now. They should’ve seen this.”
“Dear. Even if they’re not here with us, they are still watching us from the heaven above. Don’t be sad.”
“But still-”
“Sunkyu is here for you. When he grows up, you can tell him everything. The fish you caught...” She started to tickle my tummy. “Your great skills...”
“Halmunee! Haha~ Stop tickling me!”
“Even your silly adventures!”
“Alright! Alright!”
“Promise me, Yuri. You will take care of Sunkyu when I’m gone.”
“Don’t say that halmunee, you will not die yet.”
“Nobody can tell that, my dear.”
“Then not even you, halmunee. So don’t ever say that again.”
---
“Halmunee... wake up please!”
“I’m sorry, kid.” The doctor said. “Your grandmother is gone. She passed away.”
“No! you’re lying! Halmunee, please wake up. Don’t leave us!”
“I’m sorry for your loss.” He said and left us alone in the room. Sunkyu tugged my shirt. “Hyungie, halmunee isn’t breathing. Hyungie, why?”
“She’s now in heaven, Kyu.”
“Why?”
“It’s... It’s what our God wanted.”
“Are you going to leave me too?”
“No, Sunkyu. I won’t leave you. I will take care of you. Don’t worry.”
---
“Hyungie.”
“What is it, Kyu?”
“Are you my appa?”
“No. I am not. We have no appa.”
“My friend told me you were my appa.”
“No I am not.”
“Why we have no appa then?”
“They were in heaven now too, Sunkyu.”
“Then that makes you my appa now, right?”
“No.”
“Appa...”
“Sunkyu, I said-”
“Appa...”
Sigh. “Fine. I am your appa.”
“Then where is my umma?”
“She’s... just somewhere.”
“I want to meet her. Let’s find her!”
“We will... soon.”

It’s been five days passed after our grandmother died. We have nowhere else to go but to live on the truck she left for us. It ran out of gas too as I tried to drive to the city. I stocked some fish for us eat but then Sunkyu started to refuse to eat them. He said he’s sick and tired of eating fish. I tried to sell them to some people to buy other food and also gasoline but unluckily, no one wanted them. They said we were filthy and our fish might contain germs.
One afternoon, I saw a kid with long brushed-up hair walking by. He seems to be the same age as me. I tried my luck on him. “Hi.” I greeted.
“Hmph. Filthy. Who are you, huh?”
“I’m Yuri. I’m selling fish. Would you like to buy some?”
“Why would I buy from you?”
“Because you’re a good person?”
“Hah! As if that will work on me.”
“At least buy one fish, please sir.”
“You filthy poor people are the dirt of this world. Scram off.”
“Appa.” Sunkyu called.
“What is it Kyu?”
“I feel hot.”
“What?” I checked him up and his fever was so high. He started to cough hard.
“What’s going on with him?” The kid asked.
“I- I don’t know.”
“Come on. Let’s take him to the hospital!”
---
“Please Mr. Nurse, do something. Cure my brother.”
“I’m sorry kid. No deposit no treatment here.”
“Please! Heal him! I promise to pay later!”
“Don’t you have parents at all?! Come back when you already have money!”
“Yah! The little boy’s dying yet all you think about is money?! Do something!” The kid snapped.
“I know what this is. You three are little thieves pretending to be sick. We wouldn’t be falling for your tricks this time!”
