A few seconds after the letter reaches his hand, Kwonnie glances up with what seems like a disappointed look on his face, “So you’ve seen it already. It’s not a surprise anymore.”
I merely ruffle his hair in response. He continues reading anyway, and I’m just fixated on him concentrating on the letter. Kwonnie’s exceedingly charming when he gives his full attention to something—the unavoidable pouted lips, the piercing eyes and the lightly furrowed brows. Kwonnie’s reading leisurely, at his own pace, seemingly taking in every word on the page. But I’m not complaining, as I’m enamoured just gazing at his measured reactions to my words on paper. All too fast, he grazes his thumb against the final line of the letter. He frowns, which comes as a shock to me. Then he flips the letter over impatiently, only to be greeted by an empty black surface.
Finally, he looks up at me. I can’t identify what his eyes are trying to convey. It’s not anger. Perhaps he’s upset. A mix of hurt and disappointment. Why?
“So no?” His voice is so fragile, it’s almost breakable, “It’s a no?”
“What no?” I don’t get him. “Kwon-ah, I’m sorry that I saw it beforehand,”
“Really, no?” A hushed whisper so soft that I almost don’t hear him. He eyes are misty, he blinks sharply, then bites his lip briefly.
“I don’t get what you’re talking about, Kwon-ah. But if I’ve hurt you, I really didn’t mean it.” He looks so defeated that it breaks my heart, I slide over to hug him from behind, “You know I love you right?”
“You don’t trust me?” He’s trying to keep the quivering out of his voice.
“I trust you, Kwon-ah. More than I trust myself.”
“Then why?” We are obvio
