Chapter 51

Hard But Easy

Yuri keyed in the password for the main door before twisting the door knob and walked in. It was quite dark inside, except for a small flickering light which she could guess was coming from the living room. As she made her way towards the light, her eyes were roaming around for any presence of Jessica. She knew that Jessica would be alone since Tiffany had messaged Taeyeon earlier, informing her that she would be going over to Taeyeon's place. Krystal had hitched a ride from Sooyoung and Yoona to return back to Eunjin's apartment.

"Sica?"

Yuri called out softly to the person who seemed to have fallen asleep on the couch as she walked closer. Staring at her girlfriend's face, she noticed the swollen eyes and the tear-stained cheeks. Yuri sat down on the coffee table, directly opposite of Jessica and let out a soft sigh.

"Mianhae. For not spending time with you lately. Mianhae. For not being able to marry you and make you mine as soon as possible." Yuri bit her lips as she looked up the ceiling to prevent her tears from falling.

"Seobang?"

Her eyes turned towards Jessica, who was awaken and before she could react, Yuri was pulled into a hug.

"I'm sorry for saying those words to you. I'm sorry for hurting you. I'm sorry for even doubting you. I didn't know you were having a tough time at work. I'm a bad girlfriend. I should have called and checked on you instead of having doubts about you working hard for our future. I'm really sorry, Seobang. Please don't leave me. I miss you so much." Jessica started mumbling sentences after sentences as a smile appeared slowly on Yuri's face.

Yuri had expected all these from Jessica. She had known that Jessica would eventually regret her words and would apologised but seeing how clingy her girlfriend was right now, she finally realised that Jessica had really missed her presence for the past two weeks.

"Sshhh, sshh... I'm not going to leave you. I love you too much to do that." Yuri said as she tightened the hug around Jessica's waist. "I'm sorry too for neglecting you lately. I should have told you about the problems that I'm having at work instead of keeping it all inside."

"Why didn't you seek Eunjin's help? She seemed surprised to hear your outburst earlier." Jessica asked as Yuri shifted herself and sat on the couch with her hands still around Jessica's waist.

"Eunjin seemed stressed too. Her Harabeoji had been going in and out of the hospital and I heard that some of the older workers are not really in favour of her taking over the position. Some of their business partners are even planning to withdraw their contracts with the company as they didn't have faith in Eunjin's capability. They are questioning the reason as to why Eunjin was taking over. Which is why I didn't want to add on her burden." Yuri explained as Jessica frowned a little.

"She doesn't seem stress though. The last time I saw her, she was joking around happily with my sister." Jessica commented.

"Eunjin is good at hiding her emotions. If I was in her position, I won't want Krystal to worry about me too." Yuri answered as Jessica nodded her head in agreement.

"But why didn't Eunjin and Harabeoji just informed everyone about Harabeoji's health condition? At the end of the day, Eunjin will still have to take over the company. So no matter what, they would still have to work under her."

"Because they are scared that if the news were to spread out, their business will be affected further. Share prices will drop and business deals will be in jeopardy. Since they are still unsure of Harabeoji's condition at the moment, both of them didn't want to take any risk yet. There's still some hope for Harabeoji to survive this ordeal." Yuri let out a sigh when she thought of the problems that Eunjin was facing. "But since I've accidentally blurted out my problem just now, Eunjin is already aware of it and has informed me that both of us will need to talk it out once we're back to the office."

"What do you think Eunjin is going to do about it? Will she be angry at you for keeping it from her?" Jessica turned her body so that she can face Yuri fully.

"I'm not going to worry about that at the moment. Now it's the time for us to settle our own problems." Yuri said as she leaned in and kissed Jessica passionately on the lips before pulling back for air. "I miss you a lot too. And no matter what happened between us, I promise you that I'm going to stick around for as long as I can. Because I really do love you a lot. With all my heart."

************************

I folded my arms and focused on the video that was playing on the computer. It was a Saturday, a non-working day but here I am, at my own office as I leaned back into my chair. Ever since I had heard Yuri's outburst last night, a lot of thoughts had ran through my mind which eventually, was affecting my sleep. I woke up early today, at around 7am, obviously much earlier than Krystal and left the house after leaving a note to inform her of my whereabouts.

The first thing I did when I arrived at the company was to head straight to the security room where the guards on duty were surprised to see me. They stood abruptly when I entered the room as I smiled and told them that I was not here for an inspection.

After informing them that I would be heading to my office for some work, one of the security officer, escorted me up to my office. It was the company's procedures whereby access to all levels of the office would be locked on weekends with only the security personnels, having the access to unlock it. Therefore, if any workers needed to come back to the office, they would need to have approval from their superiors to do so. It was one of the measures to ensure that no company information would be leaked.

Obviously, the security personnels were those employed by Uncle Park who was certain that they could be trusted. Most of them had gone through some trainings under Uncle Park including some intrusions and also tested on their loyalty.

Once I was alone in my room, I switched on the computer and searched for the thing that I was looking for. It was a hidden remote access to all the CCTV of the office rooms to all the top management officers and supervisors from all department in the company. The only ones who had access to it was Uncle Park, Harabeoji and me. Looking through all the folders, I managed to find the one from Mr Choo's office.

Backtracking the records to the past one week, I started to watch the videos on my screen as a frown slowly appeared on my face. By the time I was watching the 3rd day recording, I had to pause and massaged my temples.

"Why didn't Yuri informed me about all these bullying?" I mumbled to myself before the sound of my phone ringing, disrupted my focus.

As I looked at the name that had appeared on my phone screen, a smile replaced the frown. Seemed like Krystal was already awake.

"Good morning, sweetheart."

"Morning." I heard a yawn coming from Krystal as I could imagine her cute reaction. "Why are going back to the office? It's a Saturday."

"I won't be long. I just need to check on something urgent."

"Is it something that has got to do with Yuri-unnie?"

"How did you know?" I was surprised when Krystal managed to guess correctly.

"It was just a guess. You didn't really slept well last night. You were tossing around and was a little restless. I noticed that you were awake a few times throughout the night. Since Yuri-unnie and Sica-unnie had a fight last night, I suspected that it had to do with either one of them."

"Oh no.. Did I disturb your sleep with my actions? I tried my best to minimise my movements though."

"You didn't really disturb my sleep. Since there's no longer any bolster between us, I could feel your every movements. But not to worry. I slept well. By the way, do you want me to get some breakfast for us and bring it over to your workplace? I got a feeling that you didn't had your breakfast yet."

I chuckled at Krystal's accurate guessing again and told her that I was in favour of her suggestions. We ended our conversations with Krystal informing me that she should arrived within 2hrs, along with our breakfast. I told her to get the access to enter my office from the security personnel once she had arrived. Putting away my phone, I continued watching the video.

"Do you think just because you are friends with the new Director, everything will be easy for you?"

"I don't understand why you girls need to work so hard and even pursue jobs that are meant for men. You are not even good at it. All this rich and arrogant youngsters. Thinking that just because they have the connections, they can get away with anything."

"You should just find yourself a nice man and stay at home instead of dealing with all these oil and grease. If you were my daughter, I would have married you off."

"Kwon Yuri, stay back to finish up the checkings on the repairs since you love the job so much. The rest of you can knock off already. Those of you who are free can join me for a drinking session."

"Are you stupid? What makes you think that the management will accept your idea? In the first place, why are you even bothered about helping the company to save up? They are rich people. They can afford all this wastage. I'm not going to approve your idea because it's a waste of my time to present it to the upper management."

I had to pause the videos several times while watching and adjusted the audio volume to ensure that whatever that I heard was correct. Mr Choo, Yuri's fleet manager had been throwing sarcastic remarks and even looking down on Yuri's capabilities throughout the videos that I had been watching. The worst part was that I've only watched 4 days worth of recordings. As my fingers combed my hair to the back, I let out a deep sigh.

'She should have told me about all this. Mr Choo's personal attack on her is not acceptable. Since when did this thing even started?'

I leaned back into my chair once the 4th day recording ended and closed my eyes. I had only searched for the recordings of the current week so I was not sure when did all these bullying had started. The words that I had heard so far, was something that could hurt anybody's feelings easily.

"I can't believe my good intention had ended up like this."

Since Mr Choo was the most senior of all the Fleet managers, I thought that it was for the best if I was to put Yuri under his care. With his vast experience in the job, I was expecting him to impart as much knowledge to Yuri as possible but never would I expect that this kind of thing would happen.

I didn't even realised that I had accidentally fallen asleep until I felt someone shaking my shoulders. Opening my eyes, I saw Krystal looking at me with a frown.

"Are you okay?"

I nodded my head and smiled before stretching out my arms and finally wrapping it around Krystal's waist.

"Did you just arrive? I didn't hear the lift coming." I asked as I looked at the clock which showed that it was almost 11am.

"I was here for almost 20mins and had even arranged our breakfast nicely on the meeting table over there. I saw that you were sleeping when I arrived so I didn't want to wake you up just yet. I thought you said that you needed to check on something urgent?" Krystal asked as she pulled me towards the meeting table that was in my office. "Or is it more comfortable for you to sleep in the office than sleeping beside me?"

"Of course not. I was doing some work earlier and had closed my eyes for a minute. I didn't expect to fall asleep though." I answered honestly before my eyes widened at the spread of food on the table. "Wooahhh.. Did you really bought all these?"

"I didn't know what you feel like eating so I bought a little bit of everything. There's American, Chinese and Korean style. You can choose."

I chuckled when I saw the proud grin on Krystal's face as we took our seats. Since she bought a little of everything, we decided to share the food.

We ate our breakfast in silence, both of us lost in our own thoughts. When I had returned home last night after a long chat with Taeyeon and Yuri, Krystal was already asleep so I didn't managed to ask her about her sister's condition. But I knew by now, Yuri would have settled everything with Jessica so I wasn't worried that much.

"So can you tell me about what you have been doing here or is it suppose to be a company's secret?" Krystal broke the silence as I smiled at her and shook my head.

"I can show it to you later, once we are done with breakfast. My company will be your company in the future since you're going to be marrying me." I smirked as Krystal rolled her eyes at me before she chuckled. "But I need you to keep it to yourself since I have yet to talk to Yuri about it. Promise me that you're not going to tell your sister about it."

"Wae?" Krystal frowned before glaring at my pinky finger which I was wriggling in front of her. "Why can't I tell my sister about it? Did Yuri-unnie cheated behind my sister's back?"

"It's worse than that." I pretended to shake my head depressingly as if the news were too grief for her to find out. "But before that. Is your sister okay after last night? I didn't manage to ask you since you were already asleep when I reached home."

"I called her phone this morning before leaving the house. Yuri-unnie was the one who answered and told me that my unnie was still sleeping. I presumed that everything is fine." Krystal explained.

"That's good to hear because I believe that both of them were at fault. Yuri for neglecting your sister and Jessica for assuming things." I said as I noticed that Krystal was done with her breakfast. "Since you're done eating, let me show you something."

************************

Krystal's POV

I couldn't help myself but to continue to observe Yuri-unnie. Stealing glances at her, people would think that I had a major crush on Yuri-unnie. The soft touch of someone's hand on my thigh, distracted my focus as I turned to my right where I saw Eunjin smiling at me.

"Have you decided what to eat yet?"

She asked and for a minute, I didn't understood her question until I remembered that we were all at a restaurant for our dinner. Sica-unnie had invited me and Eunjin to join her and Yuri-unnie for dinner since she felt guilty for her attitude towards the both of us for the past few weeks. So the dinner invitation was a form of apology from her.

"Hhhmmm.. There's too many nice choices in here." I decided to pretend to look through the pages even though I had been holding on to the menu for the past 10mins. "What are you having?"

Eunjin seemed to know that I was asking her that question on purpose as she said that she was planning to order the steak which I quickly intercepted by saying that I wanted it too. Nodding her head, Eunjin smirked and leaned towards my ear.

"It's obvious that you've not looked at the menu because there's no steak on it." Eunjin whispered as I pouted before she helped me with my order.

Luckily for me, both Yuri-unnie and Sica-unnie were engrossed in looking through the menu so they were not aware of whatever that had just happened. Once the ordering food was over, Yuri-unnie and Eunjin started chatting away about cars and some mechanical stuff while Sica-unnie seemed busy with her phone. So I was left alone to wonder my eyes around the restaurant before it stopped again at Yuri-unnie.

'How did someone who had gone through so much at work, is still able to smile and pretend that nothing had happened?'

I thought to myself as I replayed back the scene where Eunjin had shown me the videos in the office. It broke my heart when I heard the words that was thrown at Yuri-unnie as she stood silently in front of her manager with both her hands clasped together. She had her head hung low as the elderly man continued to berate her. If I was in Yuri-unnie's position, I would have thrown my resignation letter on the spot.

(Flashbacks a few hours ago)

"Why did Yuri-unnie allow herself to be scolded like that? Why didn't she retaliate?"

My questions was randomly thrown out as I continued to watch the recordings until it ended on Friday which was yesterday. Eunjin was frowning as if she was in deep thoughts before she decided to tap something on her keyboard. Instantly, another screen popped up where I saw Mr Choo talking to another guy who seemed a little younger than him.

"Who is that guy?" I asked as I saw Mr Choo handing over a file which looked a little familiar to me.

"He's Mr Song, the Head of Department for the Technical Support. All the four fleet managers will report directly to him. He will then report to me." Eunjin explained as I nodded my head. "Did you notice the file that Mr Choo handed over to Mr Song?"

"Yes, I did. But it looked familiar though." I tried to recall from where I had seen it before until Eunjin intercepted my thoughts.

"It was the file that Yuri had given to Mr Choo. The one where he had said that it was a waste of time for him to present to the top management."

"So he did helped to pass it over. Guess he's not that bad afterall." I said but I was surprised when Eunjin shook her head.

"He's worse than that." She said as she stood up and walked to one of the cupboards near the meeting table and pulled out the drawer. When she walked up to me , I saw her holding the file that we were talking about. "Here. You will understand what I mean when I said that he's worse than that."

Talking the file away from her hand, I looked at the front page but I didn't really understand the technical terms that was being used. What caught my attention was the name that was written at the bottom.

"Prepared by Choo Minsuk?" I looked up at Eunjin with eyes wide opened. "I thought this was supposed to be Yuri-unnie's work? Oh my god... Don't tell me.."

"That's what I thought too. He took Yuri's work and claimed it to be his. Luckily, the management had not started to go through all these projects. This file was submitted to me by Mr Song yesterday morning for our bi-weekly meeting next Wednesday. Imagined if I had approved this suggestion and even applauded Mr Choo for his work. Yuri would have been so hurt."

I noticed the sadness in Eunjin's expression as she let out a deep sigh. I could understand her emotions. Yuri was her best friend. Obviously, she wanted the best for her. She did informed me before that Mr Choo was the most experience worker in the Technical Support Department, which was why she had put Yuri under his care.

"Don't blame yourself." I said as I saw Eunjin turning to face me. She was about to say something but I stopped her. "I know you will continue to blame yourself because you were the one who had made the arrangement for Yuri-unnie to work under that old man. But no one expected this to happen and I think Yuri-unnie will never blame you too. Which is why she had never said anything to you until last night."

"I'm just sad that this kind of things is happening in the company. What if the person was not Yuri? I would not be able to find out anything about all the harassment and bullying. And if Yuri had not accidentally blurt it out last night, I would still be unaware." Eunjin rubbed her face with both her hands. "I've not been doing a good job as the director."

Sensing that Eunjin was feeling really depressed at the moment, I quickly gave her a tight hug and patted her back.

"You're still new in this work. You still have a long way to go. Learn your mistakes and improve on them. Nobody is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes."

I felt her nodding her head before placing it on my shoulder. We stayed in that position for a while until I received a phone call from Sica-unnie.

(End of Flashbacks)

"Soojung-ah, accompany me to the Ladies."

I blinked my eyes rapidly at Sica-unnie's sudden request. Even though it didn't sound unusual but my guts feeling told me to try to avoid it. The look in Sica-unnie's eyes showed that she won't take a 'No' for an answer so reluctantly, I stood up and followed her from behind.

The moment the Ladies door was closed behind me, Sica-unnie turned around and faced me while pointing a finger.

"Spill."

Once again I blinked my eyes at her and tried to look as clueless as I could be.

"Don't pretend anymore, Soojung. It's only the two of us right now. You think I won't noticed that you had been eyeing your Yuri-unnie since we arrived at the restaurant. I saw that look in your eyes. You're trying to hide something from me."

'Oh no. Was I really that obvious? Of course I was.' I mentally facepalmed myself as I gave a small smile to Sica-unnie.

"Unnie. I'm not trying to hide things from you. It's just that I've promised Eunjin not to say anything just yet. Because she still wants to talk to Yuri-unnie first before deciding on the next course of action." I tried to slowtalk to my sister who seemed to be in deep thoughts right now.

"Is it really that bad? The situation at her workplace?" Unnie seemed to know whatever that was happening as I enquired about it from her. "Yuri did told me that her manager was giving her a hard time at work. Sometimes she felt belittle and even at some point, she wanted to quit. But the economy is not that good at the moment. Furthermore, the salary that Eunjin had offered her was really good."

"All I can advise is that please be more supportive of Yuri-unnie. I can see that she's working really hard. I think one of the reasons that she's enduring all these is because she wants to build a better future for the both of you. So please don't be too hard on her." I pleaded to Sica-unnie who slowly nodded her head.

"I'm really curious to find out what is happening at her workplace but I trust that Eunjin is going to take care of the matter and hopefully, everything goes well. I know that Yuri had been putting on a strong front for me but I'm going to follow your advice and be there for her."

I was relief to see the smile on Sica-unnie's face as we gave each other a hug. She did asked me to update her once I was able to do so and I agreed to it.
