Chapter 17

Hard But Easy

"Soojung, what do you think of Eunjin?"

Krystal turned to look at her sister who was looking straight while driving. "You mean Eunjin-unnie?" A nod from Jessica, caused Krystal to frown. "What's with the sudden question?"

"Just asking. Since we had lunch with her earlier. I didn't know that Eunjin plays basketball with Amber. Do you?" Jessica stole a glance at her sister who seemed a little restless.

"I knew. A few months back, Eunjin-unnie joined Amber's team for a competition. That was when I knew that both of them hung out together to play basketball." Krystal explained.

"So for today, were you there to watch Amber or Eunjin?" Jessica's question caused Krystal to swallow her saliva as she looked out the window.

"I hope Omma and Appa will be back before my birthday." Krystal said, totally avoiding her sister's question earlier as Jessica chuckled. "Wae, Unnie?"

"It's so obvious that you were trying to avoid my question, Soojung-ah." Jessica said as she switched off the car's engine since they've reached the shopping mall. "Don't tell me you were really there to watch Eunjin?"

"Let's go, Unnie. There's a lot of things that I need to buy." Krystal removed her seatbelt and exit from the car while her sister started to laugh non-stop.

Jessica's POV

'So what Tiff said is true. Krystal might have some feelings for Eunjin. Interesting.'

I thought to myself as I walked away from my car towards Krystal who was waiting by the entrance door to the shopping mall. I remembered the talk that I had with Tiffany a few days ago.

(Flashbacks)

"Hey, Tiff. Remember last week when you saw me and Soojung during the night when both of us said that we can't sleep. You mentioned that both of us were thinking of someone. Who was Krystal thinking about? Amber?"

Both me and Tiffany were having our lunch together during one of our working days and the idea just popped up in my head while we were waiting for our food to be served.

"What about you? Who were you thinking about?" Tiffany turned the tables around and shot me a cheeky smirk.

"Nobody. I was just not feeling sleepy that night." I answered while trying to hide my feelings but Tiffany started to chuckle.

"Oh my god, Jessi. Stop it, alright. I've known you for so long. Just like how well you knew your sister, I know you well too. I won't tell you the answer to your question if you don't answer my question." Tiffany continued to grin like an idiot as I rolled my eyes at her.

"Fine. It's that tanned monkey. Kwon Yuri." I replied before releasing a deep sigh.

"I expected that anyway." Tiffany chuckled as I smacked her hand softly. "For Krystal's case... there's a possibility that the person she's thinking about is Eunjin."

"Eunjin? As in Han Eunjin, the person who is damn close with Yuri?" I asked Tiffany as I noticed a wider smirk on her face. "What's with that look?"

"I sense jealousy. Are you jealous that Yuri and Eunjin are very close to each other?" Tiffany asked and I was about to shake my head when I realised that Tiffany would have guessed it correctly anyway so I nodded my head. "Ouuhhh... so cute."

"Whatever." I rolled my eyes at the smiling girl. "Anyway, what makes you think that it's Eunjin? It could be Amber."

"Let's just say my guts feeling tell me so. But I'm sure about something though. Eunjin likes Krystal." Tiffany said with a look of confidence in her face.

(End of flashback)

'Maybe I should find out more to what extent is Krystal interested in Eunjin.'

I was smiling to myself with that thoughts before hooking up my arms around Krystal's arm and smiled at my little sister who was looking at me with skeptical eyes.

Krystal's POV

'Unnie is acting really weird today. What's with all that questioning?'

I was lost in my own thoughts as I felt someone linking their arms with mine. I turned to my side and saw that Unnie was smiling to herself. A frown appeared on my face.

"Wae, Soojung-ah? Why are you frowning?"

"Why are you smiling to yourself, Unnie? You're weird today." I expressed my true feelings as my sister chuckled.

"I was just thinking about something." She replied before both of us stopped in front of a Victoria Secret shop. "Actually, I was thinking of someone."

Once again, Unnie smiled at me before she released her arm and skipped into the shop, leaving me behind.

'Someone? She's not thinking of Eunjin, right?'

I bite my lips at the last thought that had appeared on my mind as my heart started to beat a little faster than usual, making me feel more restless.

************************

"Do you think there's something wrong with Yuri?" Taeyeon asked as I leaned against the wall and folded my arms.

Taeyeon mimicked my posture as both of us stared at the same person, who were busy handling a female customer, just a distance away.

"She's not being flirtatious." I said as Taeyeon nodded her head. "It looks funny that Yul is being as professional as a proper mechanic."

"Exactly. That was what I was thinking too. Why is she acting that way towards a female customer who looks like a model?" Taeyeon asked. "Usually, by now, the customers will be throwing themselves at her."

"Did you notice that there's a decrease in the number of girls looking for Yuri lately?" I pointed out as Taeyeon nodded her head. "And even when there's female customers were around, Yuri will only serve them when both of us are busy. If not, she will push those female customers to us."

"Do you think Yuri is turning straight?" Taeyeon commented as I turned to look at her with a bewildered look before both of us started to laugh out loud.

Our laughter caused Yuri and the customer to turn their attention at us as we both stopped laughing and pretended as if nothing happened. When Yuri continued to glare at us, both of us looked away and even moved to another corner of the workshop just to avoid Yuri's glare.

Both of us were about to continue our conversation when my phone rang. Looking at the caller id, I showed it to Taeyeon before answering the call.

"Yes, Yoongie? How can I assist you?" I said in a teasing tone as Taeyeon chuckled beside me.

"Jinnie, are you and Taeng-unnie free after work today?"

I turned to Taeyeon and asked the same question as Taeyeon nodded her head.

"We are. Wae?" I asked Yoona over the phone as she explained that she needed both of us to meet her later. "How about your Unnie? Do we bring her along?"

"Anni, anni.. Just the two of you. And not at Twin Towers. Meet me somewhere else. I'll message you the location later. Remember not to tell Unnie. Bye"

We ended the call just in time as Yuri walked up to us as we suddenly grinned like idiots due to our nervousness about hiding the phone conversation.

"What's with that stupid grins?" Yuri asked as she arched her eyebrows and folded her arms.

"Anni.. I was just teasing Eunjin. Telling her that she should have entertained the female customer earlier, since we saw that you didn't look as if you're interested in her." Taeyeon replied while I just nodded my head blankly.

"She's just not my type." Yuri said as she unfolded her arms and was about to walk away when I shot her a question.

"Then what is your type? Or better still, who is your type?"

I saw Yuri paused herself from walking for a short while before she waved her hands off and said that she hasn't found the right one yet.

"Liar." I mumbled to myself but I think Taeyeon heard it because she was chuckling to herself and laughing at me, who was pouting.

A few hours later, as Taeyeon was standing behind her car door and I was putting on my helmet, a pouting Yuri was standing in front of her car with her folded arms. Yuri had suggested for us to hang out together but both of us declined and informed her that we already had prior appointments. We didn't informed her that our appointments were with the same person though since Yuri assumed that Taeyeon was meeting up with Tiffany.

"Obviously, I can't be hanging with Taeng since she's on a date." Yuri said as Taeyeon just shrugged her shoulders. "But what about you? Where are you going?"

Yuri pointed her finger at me as I just smirked at her. I told her that I was meeting some of my friends from the University and Yuri pouted again. She wanted to follow me but I told her that they've already made reservations for dinner so it's troublesome if she was to tag along.

"Don't you usually have places to hang out during Friday night? Pubs or clubs? You're usually the first one to leave among us." Taeyeon asked as Yuri sighed.

"Fine then. I'll see you guys on Monday. Enjoy the weekend then." Yuri waved reluctantly and stepped into her car as we watched her car moved off.

"Where do you think she's going?" Taeyeon asked me as I shrugged my shoulders.

"Let's make a move now. Yoona should already be there, waiting for us." I said, switching on my engine while Taeyeon disappeared into her car.

It didn't take long for me to reach the place where Yoona had asked us to meet her. It took Taeyeon slightly longer since she's in a car while I could just squeeze through the traffic. Me and Yoona were already seated at the table when Taeyeon arrived to join us.

"Yoona, this restaurant is just a few blocks away from your cafe. Why can't we just meet up there?" Taeyeon asked the moment she sat down.

"Because Yuri-unnie sometimes will stop over at the cafe after work." Yoona said as Taeyeon and I gave her a disbelief look. "It's true. Even on weekends she's either at home or hanging out at the Twin Towers. Sometimes helping out or sometimes just spending time with Sooyoung playing games in her office."

"Yul doesn't go out anymore?" Taeyeon asked as Yoona shook her head. "Not going on dates or even to the pubs to hang out with any girls?"

Another shook of the head from Yoona caused Taeyon to frown as I just stared blankly at both girls. I wasn't really aware of the lifestyle that Yuri had before we met again after the separation so I didn't really understood the fuss over it.

"Is it really a big issue?" I asked as Yoona and Taeyeon nodded their heads. "Since when did you notice the changes in your Unnie?"

"If I'm not wrong, a few days after we went to the amusement park. Nowadays when I reached home, Unnie would already be at home and she was never home earlier than me. Never even once. Especially since she broke up with 'that person'." Yoona explained further.

Just when I was about to ask something, Yoona's phone beeped as she read the message before showing it to us.

From Syoungie,

Just for your info, your Unnie is here. She had asked about you but I said that you went off early to meet some of your school friends.  By the way, send my regards to Taeng-unnie and Eunjin. Enjoy your dinner and I'll see you later.

"I had expected that unnie will stop by tonight, especially if both of you are not hanging out with her." Yoona said as she kept her phone aside. "Which is why I told Syoungie to keep me updated if Unnie was there."

Silence filled the table as everyone was lost in their own thoughts. But Taeyeon's phone rang as she answered it.

"Hi dear... Yes, I'm with them.. Yoona wants to talk about Yuri's strange behaviour... Really?.... You want to come now? Do you want me to fetch you?... Arraseo... We'll wait for you. Take care, Ppany-ah."

Both me and Yoona just listened to bits and pieces of their conversation as we waited for Taeyeon's explanation after she hung up her phone.

"Ppany said that she wants to join us." Taeyeon explained before her eyes stopped at Yoona and she felt guilty suddenly. "Omo, mianhae Yoona. I didn't ask for your permission first. When I told her that we were talking about Yuri's strange behaviour, she said that she might know the reason why, so when she said that she wanted to join us, I absentmindedly agreed to it."

"Fany-unnie knows something?" Yoona frowned before nodding her head as if she had realised something. "Maybe because Unnie is her friend too."

"Tiffany knows that you're meeting us?" I asked as Taeyeon grinned before explaining that she would usually informed Tiffany about her whereabouts. "Whipped."

Taeyeon shoved me by her shoulders when I as Yoona said that she would also do so if she's going somewhere without Sooyoung.

"When you have a girlfriend, you will be doing the same thing, Eunjin. It's not because me and Yoona are whipped. It's just so that our partners doesn't get worried about us unnecessarily." Taeyeon said.

"I know. I was just teasing you earlier. It's the right thing to do anyway." I smiled and showed a thumbs up.

We continued chatting about other matters while waiting for Tiffany's arrival. Taeyeon seemed interested when Yoona brought up the topic of me doing live band performance at her cafe every Tuesday and Thursday after I finished work. The plan would only start next week as Yoona explained that Sooyoung would be playing the keyboard while Sooyoung's friend would be helping out with the drums.

"It sounds great. I can't wait to listen to Eunjin singing again." Taeyeon said as she patted my back.

"Actually, you can sing too." I turned to face Taeyeon who looked puzzled. "Don't act like you can't. I've heard you sing before when you were servicing the cars. Even though it was not loud but I heard it and it sounds so much better than me."

"In that case, both of you can take part together. Sing a duet or take turns to sing." Yoona started to clap her hands excitedly as she continued saying  that she would bring up the idea to Sooyoung.

"What's with the excitement?"

The 3 of us turned behind towards the direction of the voice as Tiffany walked up to our table and sat beside Yoona, facing Taeyeon. I wanted to give up my seat to Tiffany since I was seated beside Taeyeon but Tiffany said that she was fine with it.

"We usually sits facing each other." Taeyeon explained as she handed Tiffany the menu book. "In this way, I can see her face."

The cheeky grin on Taeyeon's face caused me and Yoona to pretend as if we wanted to barf while Tiffany just giggled. After the order had been placed, we continued our discussion about Yuri as Taeyeon and Yoona took turns to update Tiffany about the apparent changes in Yuri's behaviour.

"Don't you think that Yuri is trying to change her image? The player image that everyone seems to have of her." Tiffany said after both of them were done explaining to her.

"Her player image?" Yoona repeated as she placed her elbow on the table and rested her chin on her palm. "Why would she want to change it? I mean it's good that she wants to change but there must be a reason for it, right?"

"Jessica?" I blurted out the name as Tiffany clapped her hands once and pointed a finger to me as if I had hit the jackpot with my answer.

"Taetae, do you remember that night after they celebrated us becoming a couple? Remember what I told you in the car?" Tiffany asked as Taeyeon nodded her head. "I think my observations were right. Yuri likes Jessica a lot."

"Actually, talking about that night, I remembered Yuri telling me that nowadays she didn't feel right when she hangs out with other girls. The thought of Jessica seems to bother her a lot." I informed the girls about the talk that me and Yuri had when she spent the night at my place before Tiffany added her story about how she found both the Jung sisters being sleepless on that same night and what she found out from Jessica, who admitted that she was jealous of me being close to Yuri.

"At least we are certain about my unnie's feelings for Sica-unnie. She even kept their graduation photo together until today. That must have meant something to her. But how about Sica-unnie? Does she share the same feelings too?" Yoona asked with a worried tone. "I don't want Yul-unnie to go through pain again."

"What actually happened to Yuri? Seriously, after knowing her better, I don't really expect her to be someone with that player image." Tiffany said since she was not aware of Yuri's past.

************************

Even though my eyes were focused on the TV screen in front of me but my mind was wandering somewhere else. I had just returned from the meet-up with Taeyeon, Tiffany and Yoona. Sooyoung had came to join us at around 10pm after closing the cafe. After Yoona told Tiffany about what happened to Yuri in the past, Tiffany was confident that Jessica would be able to accept Yuri if she had known the truth but I suggested that we shouldn't be the ones to tell Jessica about it.

We continued our chats, discussing about the cafe and also about plans of going vacation together as a group. It was almost midnight when we left the restaurant with Taeyeon sending Tiffany home since she had arrived in a cab earlier while Sooyoung sent Yoona home.

After showering, I didn't feel like sleeping yet so I switched on the TV with the intention of finding something nice to watch but my mind suddenly remembered something during the chat. The part where Tiffany had mentioned about the Jung siblings not being able to sleep.

"If Sica was thinking of Yuri, then who was Krystal thinking about? Amber?" I mumbled to myself before letting out a sigh. "Eunjin-ah, you're pathetic."

I chuckled to myself when I remembered about what happened last week during the lunch that I had with both Jessica and Krystal. How Krystal was being defensive towards Amber when Jessica was unhappy about Amber's decision to leave her sister behind. I sighed again when I thought of it as I grabbed the remote control to switch off the TV.

It must have been less than an hour when I was woken up by a loud piercing sound of the thunder. I jolted out of bed and turned to look at my window. The blinds were not fully closed so I could clearly see the raindrops from where I was. I went to my window and stood for a while, looking out as the rain started to get heavier.

"Everytime there's thunder, I would be reminded of you." I said to myself as flash of lightning caused me to shut my eyes for a while before I closed the blinds fully, throwing my room into semi-darkness with the only light coming from the standing lamp near my closet door.

I was about to climb onto my bed when my phone rang. I frowned and turned to look at the clock on the wall. 'Who the hell will be calling me at 2am in the morning and in this kind of weather?' I thought to myself as goosebumps rose throughout my body while I made my way to the table beside my bed.

I stared at the phone where an unknown caller id was visible on my phone screen. The ringing stopped just when I was about to pick it up. Thinking that it might have been a wrong number, I sat on my bed and was about to pull my comforter over my body when another thunder erupted.

"It's going to be a long cold night. The weather has been unpredictable lately. Luckily tomorrow is Saturday so I can sleep in." I grinned to myself at the thought of waking up late but the grin disappeared when my phone rang again. "Seriously, is this a prank call?"

I grabbed my phone, slide the answer button and was about to scold the other person on the other line when I heard a trembling voice.

"Eun...jin...unnie?"

"Krystal?"

(Flashback a few hours ago)

"Are you sure you'll be fine alone?" Sulli looked at Krystal who was seated at her study table with her assignments spread around.

"Of course I am. Go ahead, Sulli. Your parents are already here to fetch you." Krystal said as she smiled at her friend.

"But this is going to be the first time that you'll be alone. Are you sure about this?" Sulli had a worried tone on her.

"It's okay. I'm going back to my Unnie's place tomorrow morning, anyway. So it doesn't really matter. We didn't expect that your parents would come to fetch you home for the weekends so it's not Luna's fault either. Don't worry. It's just one night." Krystal stood up when Sulli walked nearer to give her a hug,

"Take care then. I'll see you on Monday." Sulli said as she waved goodbye to her friend.

Usually, the 3 of them would leave together on Saturday morning but Luna had a family gathering for her sister's birthday that night so she had left early. Sulli, who had planned to hitch a ride with Krystal to the nearest subway station, was surprised when her parents called her and said that they were coming to fetch her after attending a wedding event nearby.

Krystal could have left along with Sulli but because she had some assignments to complete, she decided to leave in the morning instead. Taking a break from studying at around 10pm, Krystal was surprised when Amber came knocking on the door with a packet of food. Amber had just finished her part-time job at Twin Towers Cafe and had brought some dinner for Krystal.

Since Krystal was alone, Amber had accompanied her until she finished her food. They continued chatting while watching TV together until about 11pm when Amber's phone rang.

"Krystal, do you want to join me and my friends while we hang out at a pub?" Amber asked as she ended the call. "We won't be out so late. Maybe until 2am?"

Krystal shook her head and told Amber that she still had her assignments to complete. Amber then said that she would be leaving soon since her friends were waiting for her and asked for permission to use the toilet first. While Amber was in the toilet, Krystal was tempted to see the photo on Amber's phone screen which she had stolen a glance earlier so she pressed the button and saw the group photo, taken when they had won the basketball competition. Krystal's eyes were scanning through until it stopped at a figure who was standing slightly apart from the group with a shy smile.

"Eunjin-unnie."

(End of Flashback)

I was drenched right up to my skin as I knocked repeatedly on the door. My heart was beating fast as a frown appeared on my face.

"Come on, Krystal. Open the door." I mumbled to myself as my lips trembled from the cold.

At the instance, the door opened and I was engulfed into a hug.

"Wait, wait, wait.. I'm totally wet." I tried to pull away but a loud thunder erupted, causing the girl in my arms to tighten her hug instead.

I didn't know how long we were standing in that position between their dorm's corridor and the door until I heard the sound of light snoring. I tilted my head sideways and noticed that Krystal had actually fallen asleep on my chest while hugging me.

"Daebak. This girl is really something."

I mumbled to myself as I bent my body forward and carried Krystal, bridal style, to the couch in the living room before lying her down slowly.

"It's really going to be a long cold night."
