Chapter 19

Hard But Easy

"I was really surprised when you called me just now. But are you sure that it's a good idea?" Yoona took a sip from her drink and waited for Jessica's answer.

"I just want to see to what extend does my sister really likes Eunjin. I know she's currently dating Amber but as a sister, I'm worried that Amber can't take care of my sister. Knowing Soojung, she's good at hiding her true feelings." Jessica answered.

"It was really funny when you purposely showed so much interest in Eunjin and I even caught a glimpse of Krystal pouting. Remember when I message you earlier, telling you that I had left them alone inside the room. I saw both of them laughing and giggling to each other. It was so cute." Yoona informed the surprised looking Jessica.

"She was laughing and giggling? Really?" Jessica tried to reaffirm as Yoona nodded her head. "That's new. Soojung rarely opens up to others so easily."

"I also saw someone else being unhappy too." Yoona said with a straight face as Jessica frowned a little. "My Unnie."

Jessica opened to say something but she ended up letting out a sigh before looking away. No one spoke a word for the next 5 seconds until Yoona's phone rang.

"Hello... Yes, unnie... That's good. Does she need any help?.... Arraseo."

Jessica just observed the conversation that Yoona was having with her sister over the phone. Yoona's words earlier replayed in her mind as she tried to remember what happened inside Eunjin's ward 2hrs ago.

(Flashbacks)

While Yoona was teasing her about being close to Eunjin, one of the hopsital staff had delivered Eunjin's lunch to the ward. After the tray of food was placed on the side table, Jessica had volunteered to feed Eunjin but the girl quickly said that she was not hungry at the moment.

"I'll have it later. I need to use the bathroom for a while." Eunjin quickly excused herself as Yoona continued to grin dorkily.

Jessica then stood up to join her sister who was helping her friends to prepare the food which was quite a lot since Yoona said that some of their other friends were also making their way to the hospital.

Krystal remained quiet throughout the whole process of setting up the table which didn't go unnoticed by her sister. Jessica knew that Krystal was hiding her true emotions through her silence.

When Eunjin came out from the toilet, Jessica purposely went to her side to hold her arm even though Eunjin didn't need any help in walking back to her bed. Jessica once again asked if she could feed Eunjin, the moment the girl was comfortably resting on the bed.

"You should eat your food when it's hot, Eunjin. It's good for your fever. Right, Yoona?" Jessica said as Yoona just nodded her head. "I'll feed you. No excuses."

Jessica grabbed the bowl of porridge and started to scoop up a little before blowing into it. Just when she was about to bring the spoon nearer to Eunjin's mouth, the door opened as Yuri and Taeyeon walked in happily.

Jessica could still remember the change of emotions in the pair of eyes that was looking straight at her. From bright sparkling eyes to despair.

(End of flashbacks)

"Yul-unnie said that Jinnie has been cleared by the doctor so she's given the green light to be discharge tomorrow." Yoona's words interrupted Jessica's train of thoughts.

"That's... good to hear." Jessica answered blankly.

"Is there something troubling your mind, Sica-unnie?" Yoona asked as Jessica looked up at her.

"Yoona-ah, what kind of a person is your sister?"

Meanwhile at the hospital, only Yuri and Eunjin were left in the ward after everyone headed home for the night.

"I guess I should make a move now. It's almost coming to 10pm. You should rest early before your discharge tomorrow." Yuri said to me as she stood up and helped me to lie down comfortably after the doctor was done with the checks.

"I can rest a lot for the next 2 days, even though I'm feeling well enough to come to work tomorrow." I replied with a pout.

"Don't be stubborn. Didn't you hear what Sunny said earlier before she left? If you insist on coming to work, she would kick your out." Yuri said as I chuckled at her remarks. "Furthermore, you won't want others to worry about you, right? Especially..."

"We're just friends, Yul. Seriously." I looked straight into her eyes, trying to convey my honesty. "I don't know why Sica was trying to show intimacy with me throughout her stay here earlier. I just hope Krystal doesn't read too much into it though."

"Do you really like her? As in Krystal?" Yuri asked as I nodded my head before sighing.

"It doesn't matter though. She likes someone else."

"At least, she acknowledges your existence. She even looks for you for help. But in my case, ..." It was Yuri's turn to sigh before she looked up in a dejected way. "I don't even know how to approach her. It shouldn't have been this hard, right?"

I looked at Yuri, who had a deep frown on her face. "Frankly speaking, I'm confused too. Taeyeon and Sunny used to tell me that girls practically throw themselves at you."

"Those two are just exaggerating. There's no such things." Yuri waved her finger at me, showing that it was not true. "But then, I don't deny it was easy for me to flirt with other girls. But with Sica... It's just... difficult."

"Need my help?" I asked as Yuri turned to look at me. "Or any of the girls' help?"

"I don't think it's even possible." Yuri was not confident that we could be of any help.

"Never estimate the power of help. All you need to do is to convince us that Sica is really the one for you." I winked cheekily at her as Yuri broke into a laughter.

"By the way, how are you getting home tomorrow?" Yuri asked as I blinked my eyes repeatedly. Come to think of it, I had forgetten that my bike was still parked in front of Twin Towers cafe. "If I come to fetch you, will you be fine in my car? Or maybe you can take your medication first before you enter my car?"

"That's one of the way, I guess."

************************

"Yuri-ah, can you pull over for a while?"

Yuri turned to look at me and immediately nodded her head anxiously. She gave the signal for her car to move to the side and managed to stop it by the curb in less than 10mins. I took a deep breathe and closed my eyes momentarily.

"Are you okay?" There was an obvious worried tone in Yuri's voice. "You really look very pale right now."

I opened my eyes slowly and looked up at the rear mirror. Even I was surprised of the way I look at the moment. It seemed like I was drained out of blood.

"Can we swap seats?" I asked but Yuri looked confused. "I mean, can I drive instead?"

"Sure, sure. Just do whatever that makes you comfortable." Yuri quickly answered as she unbuckled her safety belt.

As I held on to the steering wheel and took a deep breathe, I turned around to face Yuri who had just finished buckling up at the passeneger seat. "I just want to make it clear that I'm doing this not because I don't trust your driving skills."

"Arraseo. Don't think too much about it. I remembered what Doctor Ahn explained about your condition. That there's a possibility you can ride a car but you need to be the one driving. So, don't worry. I understand." Yuri smiled widely to me as she patted my shoulders.

It didn't take long for us to reach my apartment as I saw that my motorbike was nicely parked at the basement. Yuri explained that Sunny had it arranged for the motorbike to be sent back to your apartment so that it'll be easier for me to use it once I'm feeling better. Another surprise was waiting for me when I entered my house and Yoona was there, happily singing while cooking in my kitchen. I frowned a little and turned around to glare at Yuri.

"I gave her the password to your apartment." Yuri quickly answered.

"How did you even...?" I couldn't even complete my sentence to ask about how Yuri managed to get my password when she admitted that she had been observing when I was pressing my password ever since the first time she had came over.

"It wasn't too hard to guess. The first four digit was your birth date. But the next four digit, I had to observe again since I couldn't recognise it." Yuri said.

"The date of my parent's death." I answered nonchalantly as I walked in, quickly being embraced by Yoona who had noticed our arrival while Yuri stood frozen on her spot.

"Jinnie... How was the car ride?" Yoona asked excitedly but before I could answer, she continued talking. "By the way, there was nothing much in your fridge so I went to buy groceries for you. I've cooked lunch for the 3 of us too."

I was about to open my fridge when I noticed that Yuri was still standing outside my door with her head hung low. "Yah.. Why are you still standing there?" I was shocked when Yuri looked up and there was tears in her eyes. "Wae-yo? Gwenchana?"

"Why... do you put that date as your apartment password?" Yuri asked as she walked in and wiped her tears away. "Coming home and pressing that date, reminding you of what happened, don't you think it's very depressing?"

Yoona, who wasn't aware of it, looked at both of us with blinking eyes. I quickly explained what had happened just a few minutes earlier when her sister was talking about my password.

"Really? It was that combination?" Yoona widened her eyes as I nodded my head. "But what Unnie said was right. Why would you want to put your parent's death date as your password?"

"Because it's part of who I am. My life story." I answered as the Kwon siblings looked at each other. "It's not depressing. Well, initially it was but slowly, it turned into strength. I'm still alive, thanks to my parents. I'm not going to let their sacrifice go to waste. So everytime I'm home and I keyed in that date, it reminds me that my parents are in a better place and one day, I'll be able to meet them again."

Yuri and Yoona had a blank face initially but it slowly changed into a smile when they saw the confident smile that I was giving them.

"Time to eat then. I'm hungry."

Yoona's remark made us laughed as I helped Yuri to set the table while Yoona prepared the food. Talking and chatting away throughout lunch, the Kwon siblings left soon after. Yuri had to return to the workshop to help Taeyeon out with the workload while Yoona needed to get back to the cafe. Both of them kept reminding me to rest before leaving so that was what I did after clearing up the dishes.

The sound of chatters woke me up as I abruptly sprung up from my lying position on the bed. Rubbing my eyes before looking around, I was greeted by the sight of two dorkily smiling girls, one seated on my couch and the other standing in front of my fridge. Opening my mouth wide to yawn, I laid down back on my bed.

"What time is it now?" I asked groggily as Yuri replied that it was 5 mins to 8pm and she asked since what time I slept. "After you and Yoongie left, I took my medication and slept so maybe around 2.30pm."

"You didn't eat since then?" Taeyeon asked as both me and Yuri looked at her as if she had just asked an obvious question. "Okay, okay. I get it. My question is redundant. Anyway, there's a lot of food in here but who's cooking?"

We ended up laughing at the pouting Taeyeon when both of us said that no one was willing to cook and decided to just call for food delivery. While waiting for the food to arrive, we chatted about work and cafe until we didn't realised how it got lead to the topic on Jessica.

"Seriously, Yul. If you are really sure about your feelings about her, just go ahead. Don't hold back." Taeyeon tried to encourage her good friend.

"But she hates me." Yuri answered before letting out a sigh.

I was about to say something when the doorbell rang so I had to collect the food that we had ordered. The talk was stopped momentarily as the 3 of us concentrated on having our dinner.

"I think it's not that Sica hates you as a person, Yul. She just hates your image. Your player image." I started it again after we were halfway done with dinner. "We can see that you're trying to change that image but Sica doesn't see that or even know about that."

"You still need to find a way to steal her heart, Yul. Until when you want to wait before making any moves?" Taeyeon asked as Yuri replied that Jessica would surely reject her. "Are you sure about that? Even if she rejects you, you can always keep trying, Yul. If she means a lot to you, I believe you'll keep fighting for her."

"What Taeyeon said is true. Why don't you try befriending her first? Show her the real you and from there, it's up to her to make her choice." I suggested as Yuri frowned a little. "I mean, at the end of the day, even if you prove your love to her but she still keeps on rejecting you than there's nothing much you can do. What's important is, you've tried."

Yuri sighed and hung her head low without saying anything before I noticed that her shoulders were shaking. I nudged Taeyeon's elbow and gestured to her to look at Yuri. At that moment, we knew that our dear friend was shedding her tears.

"I could still remember the first time I saw her. A student had bumped into her, causing her books to drop to the floor. I even shouted at the student for running around the school. When I bent down to pick her books up, I wasn't prepared to meet the most beautiful pair of eyes. I didn't realise when I started liking her until I started having the need to see her everyday. Even if it was from a distance." Yuri looked up after mumbling out her feelings and sniffed her tears away. "I didn't have the courage to approach her in the past. I missed my chance then. I had never imagined being able to meet her again. But she met me at a time where even I hate the way I am. I didn't know how she got to know about my player image so even now, I'm afraid that she'll just turn away from me."

"And are you willing to let her go just because she might turn away from you? Are you going to give up without even trying?" Taeyeon asked as Yuri shook her head.

"It's been months since I first saw her at the car show with you, Taeng. And since then, nothing is the same anymore. I'm trying to change myself. Find who I really am. The real Kwon Yuri." Yuri looked at us and we saw the determination in her eyes.

"We know that you're trying to change your ways. We'll be here to help you. Anytime you need us, Yul. Right, Taeng?" I turned to look at Taeyeon, who nodded her head and gave me a high-five before both of us turned to look at Yuri and showed her a thumbs-up.

************************

"Before I perform my last song for the night, I would like to thank everyone who has taken their time to listen to my group performance tonight. I hope you've all been entertained by us and hope to see you again. Not tomorrow but next Tuesday." I had to laugh when I heard some teasing sounds from the customers who were there as they laughed along. "We will only be performing every Tuesdays and Thursdays so don't miss us too much."

I heard Sooyoung and her friend laughing at my remarks as they gave me a thumbs up.

"Anyway, the next song is actually a dedication for someone in the crowd tonight." I said as silence suddenly filled the cafe. "Ms Jessica Jung."

Everyone was looking around for the person that I had mentioned but since I looked down at my guitar while pretending to adjust the cord, the audience attention went back to me. I managed to catch a glimpse of the surprised look on Jessica, who was seated at a corner of the cafe with Yoona, Tiffany and Taeyeon. It was all part of our plan to help Yuri.  That girl had been hiding somewhere in the kitchen, only helping out Hyoyeon once in a while.

"I hope that you will listen to every word of this song that I'm going to sing because it represents the feelings of a good friend of mine. I don't think I have to say the name out because I don't really have much friends who are still single and available." I smiled cheekily as I saw Tiffany and Yoona giggling while Taeyeon showed me a thumbs up as I saw the full attention that Jessica was giving me. "For everyone else, please enjoy the song and have a good night rest later."

Yuri's POV

Even from the kitchen, I could here the speech given by Eunjin. Maybe because of the fact that the cafe had gone quiet, it made her speech loud and clear from where I was standing at the moment. Behind the kitchen door.

Earlier on, I was helping Hyoyeon at the cashier counter after both me and Eunjin had arrived to the cafe. It's becoming a normal thing for us to do for the past 2 weeks ever since Eunjin started singing every Tuesdays and Thursdays. I'll help out at the counter while Eunjin would proceed to the small stage that Sooyoung has set up for her.

But today was different. Today was the day that Jessica would be coming to the cafe with Tiffany. Taeyeon had went to fetch both of them from Jessica's apartment since both of them ended work much earlier than us. While waiting for them to arrive, I kept staring at the main door until Hyoyeon was teasing me about it so I stopped doing so.

It's been almost 45mins since Jessica had stepped into the cafe. I was caught offguard by their arrival because I was busy doing payment collection at the counter. I had the urge to strangle Taeyeon when I saw her smiling cheekily at me because I was flabbergasted when Jessica bowed a little at me.

But that was the only interaction that I had with Jessica. Yoona brought them to a table, initially asking me to join them but I declined. In the end, she ended up being the one hanging out with them at the table. By then, Eunjin had already been performing on stage for the past 15mins.

As  I listened to every word that Eunjin was singing, I had to smile a little. I remembered our little discussion earlier on at the workshop.

(Flashback a few hours 5hrs ago)

"Are you sure it's okay? Dedicating a song to her in front of everyone, won't that make her feel embarrassed?" I asked worriedly as Taeyeon and Eunjin looked at each other.

"The only people who knows Jessica is us. They might look around for her but as long as I'm not looking at her direction, no one will know who she is." I reasoned out my actions while Taeyeon agreed to it.

"We have to make it obvious to Sica that the song is for her so that she would listen to every word of it. But, what song will you be singing, anyway?" Taeyeon turned to look at me as I grinned.

"A song that really represents Yuri's feelings at the moment." I replied before smirking arrogantly.

(End of flashback)

"That kid really knows how to pick the perfect song." I mumbled to myself as I noticed that Jessica has been giving Eunjin the full attenton since the song started. "I really hope you will understand my true feelings for you."

Jessica's POV

"Anyway, the next song is actually a dedication for someone in the crowd tonight." Eunjin said as silence suddenly filled the cafe. "Ms Jessica Jung."

I stopped typing in my phone as I looked up to the stage. 'Did she just mentioned my name?' I frowned a little as Eunjin continued to meddle with her guitar, tuning the chords without looking at the audience who seemed to be busy looking around. Maybe searching for the owner of that name but at times like this, I felt lucky to have the ability to keep a straight face.

As I listened to Eunjin's speech, I frowned again when she mentioned about her good friend. 'It's so obvious that she's talking about Yuri.' I grumbled to myself as I noticed Yoona and Tiffany giggling while Taeyeon was showing at thumbs up to Eunjin.

Following her instruction, I concentrated in listening to the song that Eunjin was singing. Every single word of them.

'What is she trying to convey actually? That she's trying to find her true self? So I guess what Yoona told me was the truth.'

(Flashback two weeks ago)

"Yoona-ah, what kind of a person is your sister?"

The younger girl was obviously surprised when I asked her that question. She arched her eyebrow and looked at me as if trying to confirm that I really asked her that question.

"What do you mean by what kind of person, Sica-unnie? Are you asking me to answer as Yul-unnie's dongsaeng or in general?"

I took a deep breathe and informed Yoona that I actually knew about Yuri's player image from a friend.

"My friend went to the same university as Yuri. She found out that me and your unnie went to the same high school." I explained as I saw Yoona sighing.

"It was during university that Unnie started to change. I'm not sure if I'm even allowed to tell you the reason for her change because Unnie will surely kill me for this." Yoona looked at me with a serious look. "Before I explained further, I need to know something. If Yul-unnie doesn't have a player image, would you have accepted her feelings?"

I paused for a while as I gave it some thoughts while Yoona patiently waited for my answer. When I finally nodded my head, I was surprised that she gave me a tight hug.

"Are you sure about this?" Yoona asked me for confirmation. "You're not saying it just so that I will tell you what actually made Unnie change, right?"

"Yoona." I took her hands and clasped in along with mine. "To tell you the truth, I had a crush on your Unnie since high school. I was surprised and upset when I found out from my friend about her flirting ways. Initially, I didn't believe her but when she started showing photos of Yuri with different girls, acting intimately... I started to hate your unnie."

"I need you to promise me, never to tell anyone about this. Even if some day, Yul-unnie was to tell you what actually happened, please promise me that you're going to act as if you've heard it for the first time."

Yoona took out her pinky finger and made me do a pinky promise with her.

(End of flashback)

'Should I give you a chance, Kwon Yuri?' I thought as I continued listening to the song.

(Imagine this is the song that Eunjin was singing)
