Tuesdays were Taemin’s favorite because it meant the class that he had with Minho: cooking class. And cooking class was the most fun because Taemin and Minho were always partners. Today, they were making chocolate soufflé, and Minho was nervous.
“Taemin, you know that soufflés are really hard to make, right? What if we mess up?”
“Hyung,” Taemin laughed. “You’re worrying too much!” Taemin set out the ingredients, reassuring the anxious Minho that everything would turn out well. And anyway, even if it didn’t, they will have had a good time. Half-and-half, chocolate, cocoa powder, butter, eggs, sugar, and crème anglaise were set out and ready to be used. Taemin covered his thin fingers with butter and coated the soufflé molds with it, then covered the buttery interior with sugar. Minho started to make the chocolate ganache, worrying all the while that the half-and-half would curdle or that the chocolate would overheat, but Taemin told him not to be nervous.
“It will work, hyung! Hwaiting!”
They mixed the cocoa powder and the ganache in a double boiler, then whipped the eggs until they were creamy. They added sugar to the whipped egg mixture, making a French meringue, and Minho told Taemin every few seconds not to over-whip the eggs, which Taemin just laughed off. While the chocolate mixture was still warm, Taemin folded the meringue into the chocolate gently and skillfully, and Minho was impressed that a little ball of energy like Taemin could be so dexterous. Minho spooned the mixture into the soufflé molds, and Taemin made sure to wipe off the extra sugar and butter on the rims with his thumb before Minho put them in the oven.
When they finally came out of the oven, they looked absolutely perfect, better than either of them could have hoped. Taemin started dusting the soufflés with powdered sugar, but Minho was overly excited.
“Taemin!” he cried. He picked Taemin up and spun him around, covering both of them in sugar. “It worked!”
“See what I told you, hyung?” Taemin giggled, brushing the sugar off of Minho’s smiling face.
