Kang Iseul knew her seatmate hated her.
The look of annoyance that Minhyun gave her whenever she took a seat and the mocking jokes he made at her all proved his deep hatred for her.
He simply ignored other girls that constantly bothered him with gifts, yet she could swear that he was sending her a glare or rolling his eyes in her direction all the time.
He made it obvious that he hated hearing her voice whenever her friends came to her seat to talk, because he would put his earphones in right when she opened to speak.
She was naturally a loud person, and she had to admit that too. But what was wrong with that? If he was bothered by it, he could've simply asked the teacher for a new spot. But she knew that he wouldn't give up his seat, which happened to be in the back corner next to the window where he could keep to his cold, quiet self.
She knew that he just wanted peace and quiet, especially because he seemed to love his sleep (as he always fell asleep in class and took naps during free study periods). But by simply being a naturally loud person, she easily disrupted that peace.
Yeah, she felt guilty. But what could she do?
"You're so annoying," he would remind her daily.
Iseul was indeed sorry, but she couldn't help but be frustrated at the fact that he had to remind her day after day. Even if she tried to keep her voice down, something she did (like simply moving her chair) seemed to bother him so easily. Long after trying hard to be very quiet around him, she simply gave up. It was impossible for someone like her to be so quiet. She told herself that she would just have to get used to those sighs of annoyance that he made sure was audible to her.
During their gym class one day, they were having free sports day, where they can play any sport they want. They didn't actually have to play a genuine sport, but they just had to move around during the block period.
Iseul was with her friends, tossing a ball back and forth as they talked. They chose a spot that was far away from the teacher, not wanting to be told off for "improper ball tossing" or something dumb like that.
On the other hand, Minhyun was playing basketball, which was a sport that he really enjoyed. His tall height really gave him an upper hand, and his naturally well-built physique made it easy for him to adapt to any sport.
The basketball court, however, was besides the empty concrete area where Iseul and her friends were busy excitedly talking about their favorite idols.
Every time one of their classmates threw the basketball too hard or managed to not catch the basketball that was coming their way, they would have to go apologize for accidently hitting the girls with the basketball and invading their space. The girls couldn't help but be annoyed, especially since the ball could easily hit them near their faces. After deciding that their little concrete area was no longer safe because of the attacking basketballs, they began to take a walk around the large track that was far away from the basketball courts and the teachers.
As they were discussing the latest comeback of their favorite idol, one of the guys in their class crept up behind the girls. He was the typical prankster in their classroom, and he thought it would be brilliant to make one of the loud, fangirling female students his next target. After smiling a mischievous smile, he pulled out a fake snake from his pocket and hid it behind his back.
He reached out and tapped on Iseul's shoulder.
"Hey, Iseul. Do you mind helping me with this?" the prankster asked innocently.
Iseul and her friends stopped walking and turned towards the guy who interrupted their fangirl session. She was a little annoyed, but decided to help him anyways. "What do you need help on?"
Happy that his plan was going accordingly, he first distracted her by immersing her in a serious (but obviously made up) concern he had recently. Just went Iseul was completely absorbed into his story, he suddenly brought the fake snake from his back and presented it to her.
Immediately, Iseul and her friends began to scream. They had no idea that the snake was simply a toy, so they began to back away in fear.
Seeing that the prankster hit again, a few guys crowed around the scene. Iseul, who happened to be extremely terrified of snakes, showed the best reaction, so the guys encouraged the prankster to continue scaring her. The guys around her were laughing and joking at her reaction so the prankster kept pushing the snake towards her, making her flinch and back up even more.
She continued to back up (especially because she had no where else to go due to the large crowd of laughing guys around her) until her back hit the trunk of a tree. She panicked and out of instinct, she climbed up the tree quickly. Climbing a tree was no problem for her, as she would climb them all the time when she was young. The guys who were laughing suddenly grew concerned at how high Iseul was climbing up the tree, which was a good fifteen feet high. They were telling her that they were sorry for teasing her and that she should come down before she got hurt, but it was too late. Even though she finally realized that the snake was a toy, she had no way to get down the tree. Although she was good at climbing trees, she was terrified of getting do
