When in Sokcho: Part 2 (KangBi ft. SsamYul)

365 with ZOZI [HIATUS]

Hyewon sighed, resting on the recliner with Yuri on top of her, sleeping like a big baby. They were in their hotel for much-needed rest and their next location was saved for the evening. Hyewon was the first to wake up as her phone vibrated in her shirt pocket.

“Hello?” Hyewon spoke as she yawned.

Good afternoon, Mrs. Kang. I called to remind you about the next location for the itinerary.

“Yes…” Hyewon tried to stretch while keeping Yuri asleep. “When should we go to Sokcho Central Market?”

The best time to go is at 5 PM. The stalls will be bustling and of course, the chosen restaurant opens 30 minutes after. Time is crucial, Miss Kang. It’s important to be first in line because the first service is the best. Later than so will take hours because many customers will line up.

“Noted,” Hyewon added as Yuri was waking up.

Also, we’re giving you ₩20,000 to spend in the market. Personal money won’t be allowed.

Hyewon sits up and Yuri was fully awake. She transfers her to the bed and tucked her with her stuffed hamster. Yuri returned to sleep as Hyewon went outside to resume the call.

“What do you mean personal money won’t be allowed?” Hyewon asked. “Money is money. Why can’t I decide to spend my own money?!”

The restaurant we proposed before had backed out at the last minute and we found a second alternative. However, they can only accept banknotes from the 2000s but not 2020 onwards.

“Including coins?” Hyewon asked as she returned to check her money. “Not even credit cards?”

Including coins. The restaurant doesn’t have a card machine but it’ll be worth it. The squid bread and sweet and sour chicken there are the best-sellers.

Hyewon found one old ₩1000 bill and it was the only old bill she had. She may have cash but those were fresh from the bank. Credit cards were out of the question.

“If I have an old bill from my money, can I use it?”

You can, Mrs. Kang but not for the itinerary. In following the itinerary, you only need to spend the money provided to you.

“Why is there something like that? What’s in it for us?” Hyewon asked, crossed.

I apologize for this, Mrs. Kang. Rest assured that if every procedure is followed, the itinerary will be worth it.

“It better be. Tell your boss I’ll give her and you a piece of me!”

Hyewon hangs up immediately and sighed hard. She would’ve called another number when a tug on her shirt was felt.

“Hi.” Hyewon changed her face and kissed Yuri’s cheeks. “Go and prepare. We’re going to the market and eat chicken.”

“Okay, Mommy.” Yuri nodded. “But Mommy…you looked unhappy. Is everything okay?”

“Everything’s fine, baby. Now go.” Hyewon reassured her.

Yuri nodded and went to the bathroom. She resumed another call and when it answered, she huffed. “What the junk, Lee Chaeyeon?!”

A familiar laugh was heard. Hyewon sighed with hopes that she won’t flip out and scare her daughter. “What are you playing at with this itinerary? I did you a favor to try your travel agency and this is what you give me?!”

No need to be testy, Kwangbae. You wanted to be thrifty, right? I’m giving you a heads-up.

Hyewon rubbed her temples as Chaeyeon cackled again.

Jokes aside. This is also like a game. Tell Yuri about it and she’ll be eager to go through it.

“Really?” Hyewon raised. “What’s the real reason, Yeon? Give me a real heads-up.”

As the agent said, the first place for the second part backed out at the last minute and the second place can only accept old banknotes and coins. The ₩20,000 that will be given to you should be the only money you spend. Personal money won’t be allowed and don’t think about cards because it’s a market, for God’s sake.

“I know I’m thrifty but not that thrifty. How can I let Yuri enjoy the next destination when I only have $20?!” Hyewon asked.

Come on, Kwangbae. I know you can afford everything she wants but you told me we need to discipline her too. My godchild should realize that early. We don’t want Heeji to get involved with her and teach her to be spoiled, right?

Hyewon knew Chaeyeon was right. It was also the second reason why Hyewon tried another traveling agency to which Chaeyeon was the owner, with hopes to be sure that Yuri will be more bonded to her than her ex-wife.

They can only share the surname and face but not the personality.

“Right. Jo Heeji is getting into my nerves sometimes. I want Yuri in my custody and I’m doing it as best as I could through every vacation.”

I know but please don’t worry too much. And don’t fret too much about it. My Hiichan will be coming with you and she’ll guide you on what to spend. Maybe she can help in keeping Yuri in good hands.

“Hiichan-neesan?!” Yuri heard it and she was excited.

Hyewon nodded and lets Chaeyeon talk with her godchild. Hyewon went to prepare next and had Chaeyeon’s words in mind.

Vacations were always for Yuri and their bond and nothing will change it.

She fixed her hair and went out, just in time for Yuri to hand her phone. Hyewon received it while patting her head and answering Chaeyeon again. “I’ll call her and pick her up.”

Okay. Do take care of my daughter.

Hyewon nodded and hang up. Yuri was excited about the next part and Hyewon joined her by hugging and kissing her cheeks.

“Mommy~” Yuri laughed as she hugged back. “Let’s go~”

“Okay. Okay.” Hyewon chuckled, got her satchel with the necessities, and they went out.

“That’s the last table.”

“Thanks for helping us, Hiichan,” Eunbi added.

“That’s no problem, Imonie. Anything for you and Ssamu.”

“Honda Hitomi, the ladies’ woman.” Chaewon cooed, getting a hit from the rolled magazine.

“You and your words, Ssamu.” Eunbi sighed then averted her attention towards the girl. “How about I make us some fried chicken?”

“It’s fine, Imonie. We’ll do it next time. I need to go somewhere and my godmother will pick me up.” Hitomi added and dialed a number.

Eunbi nodded and cleaned the tables. Chaewon helped by arranging the chairs. Hitomi ended her call and added. “Are we all ready?”

“What are you talking about, Hiichan?” Chaewon asked.

Hitomi lets the mother and daughter sit down. She held their hands and said, “Imonie. Ssamu. My godmother and her daughter are coming here to pick me up and we’ll be going to Sokcho Central Market. I offered that you two can also come and she agreed.”

Chaewon got excited and asked Eunbi to agree. The mother was shocked and felt embarrassed. “Are you sure, Hiichan? W-We might disturb you – “

“Come on, Eomma. You haven’t had a day off since we opened the restaurant. You need to rest too.” Chaewon spoke. “Can we go? Please~”

Eunbi shook her head, leaving Hitomi to understand and respect the matriarch’s decision while Chaewon sighed sadly. Hitomi would’ve called again when a car parked close to the restaurant. Hitomi saw their faces and went to greet them. Eunbi and Chaewon were shocked by the faces.

“Ssamu!” Yuri waved.

“Yul!” Chaewon went to hug her.

“Miss Kang?!” Eunbi was still shocked to see her.

“Hello, Miss Kwon. Nice seeing you again.” Hyewon went to greet her, lending a hand.

Eunbi shook back and the feelings from before returned. Yuri even went to hug her and Eunbi hugged back, whereas Chaewon and Hyewon shared hi-fives.

“Imonie, what a small world!” Hitomi commented. “You also know Imonie Eunbi and Chaewon.”

“Indeed,” Hyewon replied. “Shall we go?”

“Miss Hyewon.” Chaewon tugged her shirt lightly. “Can we seriously come with you?”

“Yes. I told Hiichan to tell you and your mother.” Hyewon spoke then looked at Eunbi. “I apologize for the sudden intrusion. Knowing Hiichan is here, I want you and Chaewon to come too.”

Chaewon was eager and pleaded to Eunbi. Eunbi was conflicted because she wanted to come, knowing it was Hyewon, and at the same time, she thought it was intrusive to be part of a family hangout.

“I don’t know if we should…” Eunbi spoke.

“It’s okay. I apologize for prying.” Hyewon spoke.

“But Mommy…” Yuri pouted.

“You can’t force your Imonie Eunbi if she doesn’t want to come.” Hyewon patted her head. “Let’s go.”

Hitomi understood like her godmother and followed them. Chaewon wanted to come but she could never leave Eunbi out. She sighed sadly and waved at the three. Eunbi saw her and felt bad.

“We’ll come!” Eunbi spoke then covered .

The children were happy. Hyewon was shocked and assured her again by asking. Eunbi nodded and held Chaewon’s hand. “Come on.”

Chaewon cheered and thanked the three. Eunbi joined her after they locked the establishment down and Hyewon became the gentlewoman to let them inside the car. The children hopped on the back whereas Hyewon offered the front seat to Eunbi. Eunbi was hesitant yet Hyewon waited for her to feel comfortable and sit down.

“Seatbelt,” Hyewon spoke and helped her.

Eunbi gulped of their proximity. The children watched them and cooed silently. Eunbi took her entire being to calm herself until Hyewon sat properly. “Kids, buckle up.”

They obeyed and got settled. Hyewon drove and the kids got excited again. Eunbi was silent yet her curiosity got the best of her. “Miss Kang.”

“Just call me Hyewon,” Hyewon spoke while driving. “What is it, Eunbi-ssi?”

Eunbi had to calm down. She couldn’t believe her heart was raging. “I was curious about how you became Hitomi’s godmother.”

“Her mother is my colleague in the law firm and is also a businesswoman. She’s the CEO of the travel agency for our vacation here.”

“Imonie,” Hitomi called.  “Did Eomma plot something for this trip?”

“Oh, she did, Hiichan. Tell her she’ll get a scolding from me.” Hyewon added.

The children laughed. Eunbi would’ve joined them since Hyewon looked cute getting angry.

Snap out of it, Kwon. Jesus…

“Miss Hyewon, thank you for tonight,” Chaewon added.

“Yes, Hyewon-ssi. Thank you.” Eunbi added.

Hyewon accepted their thanks with a nod. Yuri and Hitomi also got thanks and Hitomi replied with a chuckle. “Of course. My godmother and dongsaeng would always welcome friends for things like these. Right, Yul?”

Yuri nodded and cheered, making everyone adore her.

“How old are you, Yul?” Eunbi asked.

“I’m 12 years old, Miss Eunbi~” Yuri counted with her fingers. “I’m in the last year of elementary.”

“You’re a year younger than me and Hiichan?!” Chaewon was shocked and Yuri nodded again. “Heol…you’re quite a big baby.”

“Ssamu. That’s not nice.” Eunbi reprimanded her. “I even baby you, even if you’ll turn 103 years old.”

Chaewon pouted as Hitomi and Yuri chuckled. Eunbi couldn’t help but plaster a smile, especially when Hyewon plastered hers while driving. The journey became fun as the children bonded well. Eunbi and Hyewon were silent but both knew better about their palpable tension.

Thankfully, after driving along the twinkling sea, they arrived at the Sokcho Central Market. It was one of the best hotspots for a Sokcho trip full of different things to see and eat; another haven to which Hyewon and Yuri wanted to and spend time with the people that came with them. Hyewon parked the car at a decent spot and all of them got out. The children walked first as the adults followed them. For tonight’s itinerary, Hyewon will rely on the children’s intuition whereas Eunbi followed her, walking side by side with her.

“We’re here to eat sweet and sour chicken~” Yuri cheered.

“This market is paradise, Yul.” Chaewon joined her. “There’s lots of delicious food here.”

“You remind me of little me when I visited this place for the first time.” Hitomi got to Yuri’s left and patted her head. “Not only is this a haven of food but other stuff too; from clothes to produce.”

“Oh! We should all get matching shirts!” Yuri suggested and saw a yellow duck-themed shirt. “This would look good on Imonie Yena~”

“Yena?” Hyewon got closer, asking with a pout.

Hitomi and Yuri chuckled, even Chaewon. Eunbi just smiled but her insides joined the children’s feelings.

“Aww~ don’t be jealous, Mommy~” Yuri went to walk with her.

“You’d be jealous if I talk about Hiichan or Jinnie.”

“Leave Yujin out of this.” Yuri pouted.

“Leave her mother out of it too.” Hyewon pouted back.

Chaewon, Hitomi, and Eunbi sang about fruits in Sokcho, leaving Hyewon and Yuri to join the harmony by doing a little dance to stop their playful bickers.

“Rice cake!” Yuri pointed. “We should buy some for Imonie Chaeyeon~”

“I already bought Eomma some,” Hitomi added then spoke. “Imonie, what’s the destination?”

Hyewon was about to answer when Yuri ran towards a Tanghulu stall. Hyewon dashed as she was reminded about the expenditures. The rest followed, seeing Yuri amazed by the candied fruits.

“Imonie?” Hitomi went to whisper to her. “How much did Eomma give?”

“$20.”

Hitomi sighed with her. Chaewon and Yuri were excited to buy some whereas Eunbi had the same thoughts as Hyewon.

“Eomma, let’s buy some.” Chaewon pointed at the longest stick.

Eunbi expressed her no with a glare and headshake. Yuri went to ask Hyewon to buy her one when she crouched to meet her level and said, “Yul…Mommy can only spend a certain amount. We don’t have enough to buy Tanghulu for each of us.”

Yuri whined. Eunbi felt bad and went to help.

“Hyewon-ssi, maybe we can buy just one stick,” Eunbi said her suggestion. “The children can just share it.”

Hyewon thought it was a good idea. She and Eunbi didn’t mind not being able to eat as the children mattered more. Hitomi was fine in sharing. Chaewon and Yuri may not like it but it was better not having Tanghulu at all.

“Please give us one only,” Hyewon spoke to the stall’s owner as Yuri followed her, sulking.

The owner looked at Yuri and adored her pout. She had a quick idea as to why only one was bought that she had an idea herself, grabbing the two longest sticks.

“Ma’am, you can have one more for free…” She spoke and handed the sticks in little paper cones. “For your wife and children.”

Hyewon was shocked by the comment.  “I’m sorry. The other’s woman’s not my – “

“Really?” Yuri got excited. “We get one for free?”

“Yes, dear.” The owner smiled and handed a stick to her.

Hyewon was still shocked yet accepted the other stick and thanked the owner nonetheless. Yuri thanked her again and they went to the other three who were waiting.

“The owner gave us one more for free!” Hyewon became giddy.

“Wow! Really?” Eunbi asked then waved at the owner. “Thank you~”

Chaewon and Hitomi joined in as the owner smiled and bid them farewell. The five resumed their walk as the children shared the stick Yuri had. Hyewon held the other stick and hesitated to let Eunbi try first, not because she was hungry but because she wanted to make a good impression.

For your wife and children…

Hyewon felt tingly of that thought. Eunbi looked at her and was worried if there was something wrong.

“Hyewon-ssi…” She nudged her. “Is everything okay?”

“Y-Yes…” Hyewon coughed lightly. “Mind me. I was shocked by what the owner did.”

“As the Sokcho Central Market saying goes, happiness is possible in generosity. That’s the beauty of this market.”

Hyewon felt light in those words. She watched the children share the Tanghulu and mustered the courage to say, “You have a bite first, Eunbi-ssi.”

Eunbi got her turn feeling tingly but accepted the offer. The five of them decided to sit by the benches to eat. The children had fun picking two strawberries each as the adults took turns in eating a piece. Everyone was re-energized thanks to a refreshing and sweet treat.

Eunbi and Hyewon continued to share and seeing the children’s cute eyes watching them almost choked them. Hyewon gulped her second piece and said, “Do you want more, Eunbi-ssi?”

“Maybe one more…” Eunbi added.

“Mommy.” Yuri nudged Hyewon. “Can we have more?”

Hyewon lets Eunbi eat one more as Yuri pouted. Hyewon wanted to bite a fist because her daughter was just the cutest human in the universe. Eunbi adored her too and asked Hyewon if she’ll eat more.

“Two’s enough for me,” Hyewon spoke then sighed. “Here you go, Yul. Share them with your unnies.”

Yuri cheered and thanked her mommy with a kiss on the cheek. She went back to Chaewon and Hitomi and they cheered together. Eunbi and Hyewon couldn’t help but adore them.

“Yuri is such a joy,” Eunbi commented. “It must be hard to say no to her.”

“It is,” Hyewon spoke. “She means a lot to me.”

Eunbi understood wholeheartedly. She felt Hyewon’s care for Yuri, just as much how she cares for Chaewon. For mothers, their love for their children is always first.

“Mind me for this,” Hyewon spoke then joked. “I suddenly have financial issues.”

“Hey…that’s okay. This outing has been well.” Eunbi consoled her. “I should mind our presences.”

“I don’t mind,” Hyewon spoke. “I want you and Chaewon to come. I should be thanking you for putting time on this.”

“In all honesty…” Eunbi held her hand. “…we should thank the children for getting us out of our comfort zones.”

Hyewon couldn’t agree more. As much as they were smiling because of their talk, it was cut short as both were letting go from their holds. Both looked away with reddish tints on their cheeks, just in time for Hitomi to draw closer to them.

“We should go now, Imonies~. It’s almost 30 minutes before opening time.”

Hyewon nodded and lent a hand to Eunbi. Eunbi held back and all of them resumed their walk. Hitomi became the guide towards the said destination and throughout the walk, Hyewon and Yuri were fascinated with the wide variety of different food and generous hearts.

“Squid bread~” Yuri pointed out from one stall. “Let’s have some~”

“We’ll have some on the destination, Yul.” Hyewon calmed her excitement.

“What is the place, anyway?” Chaewon asked.

“It’s Mansuk,” Hitomi answered.

“Heol. That’s the most popular sweet and sour chicken stall in the market.” Eunbi reacted.

“Really? What makes it popular, Eunbi-ssi?” Hyewon asked.

“Among many different kinds of food in this market, sweet and sour chicken is famous. Mansuk makes the best here and their signature sweet and sour boneless chicken with crushed peanuts is the bestseller.”

“Have you eaten one?”

“Only one piece…when Chaewon’s father brought some for us,” Eunbi spoke and her tone was far from happy. “We don’t buy it on a basis because one, the store only accepts old banknotes and two, the cheapest box costs ₩18,000.”

Hyewon gulped. Upon seeing the destination, the children got excited and went to the stall. Eunbi went to supervise whereas Hyewon was in a slight panic.

The Tanghulu costs ₩3000. She was ₩1000 less from buying the cheapest box.

“Good evening, Mrs. Kang. We’ve been expecting you.” The manager spoke. “Good evening to everyone, especially to the Little Miss.”

Hitomi waved casually. Chaewon and Eunbi wondered about the relationships until Yuri and Hyewon explained it to them.

“We have a special offer for today. Our signature sweet and sour boneless chicken comes with squid bread. The whole set costs the same as our usual box.”

Hyewon checked the envelope and wanted to smite the gods (especially Chaeyeon) as to why she was restricted in spending fresh money. Every look in the envelope made her burden bigger.

She had to find a way to buy the set somehow.

“Eunbi-ssi…” Hyewon asked her. “…do you have an extra ₩1000 bill?”

Eunbi shook her head and wondered what’s wrong. Hyewon whispered the situation to her and was shocked.

“I didn’t bring any money.”

Hyewon nodded her worry out and told the manager about the situation. She also clarified the banknotes.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Kang. We cannot accept fresh banknotes. That’s because Sokcho’s main bank cannot process that.” She added. “You can only spend the money given by the travel agency which is from Sokcho’s main bank.”

“Are there sets less than ₩17,000?”

“Yes, ma’am…but it’s with bones and doesn’t include squid bread. The cheapest box for the boned variety costs ₩15,000.”

Everyone wouldn’t have a problem but they would prefer boneless chicken. Hyewon was in utter defeat.

“I’m sorry, everyone. We are a dollar short for the boneless variety.”

“It’s okay, Mommy.” Yuri consoled her, realizing that she had been uneasy since they came here. “We can just eat the ones with bones.”

“No, no…” Chaewon suggested. “The boneless variety tastes better. Believe me, Yul. Eomma and I had both varieties.”

“Ssamu.” Eunbi reprimanded her, crossing her arms. “Have some decency in this outing. Remember that Hyewon is paying for all of us. Let’s be grateful for what’s offered to us.”

Chaewon nodded and apologized for her tactless mouth. Hyewon understood all their plights. Even if they say that it was fine, she wanted to spend the best for them.

Just then, Hyewon had a ding and reached for her pocket. She saw the old ₩1000 bill and cheered. Everyone joined her.

“This is from 2010. Can this be considered?” Hyewon asked.

“It’s not from the travel agency’s fund plus it’s not from Sokcho’s main bank.” She said again and pointed out the differences. “Your bill is from Yangsan’s main bank due to the code. It’s different from the code imprinted on a bill from Sokcho’s main bank.”

Hyewon groaned and scratched her head. Everyone was consoling her, especially Eunbi. They were also panicky because a line was already waiting behind them. They had to decide so the other customers won’t get impatient.

Just then, Yuri pouted and was about to cry because she hated seeing Hyewon distressed. She pleaded towards the manager with her cute eyes. Chaewon and Hitomi realized the tactic and joined her. The manager and other staff couldn’t resist their cuteness, especially Yuri’s.

“Mrs. Kang.” The manager called as Hyewon got closer like a dreaded carcass. “We can give you the best set for ₩17,000.”

“Oh, my heavens…thank you…” Hyewon sighed and bowed a lot.

“We couldn’t resist the children’s pouts, especially your daughter’s. Consider it as a discount.”

All of them cheered and thanked the management many times. Hyewon settled the transaction and all of them went inside the stall’s establishment to get a table. Everyone slowly sat down but it died in silence. Even if they’ll be eating the said dishes, there was no more money to spend.

“We don’t have money now…” Hyewon mumbled, rubbing her temples.

“It’s no one’s fault, Hyewon-ssi…” Eunbi continued to console her. “We can’t do anything about the price.”

“It’s more than okay too, Miss Hyewon.” Chaewon joined. “The set has a huge quantity. It’ll be enough for all of us.”

Hyewon thanked them a lot. Yuri empathized with her mother and hugged her. She even mumbled her apologies because she thought their persuasion was too much. Hyewon consoled her daughter back by hugging her.

“Look~” Hitomi pointed at the establishment’s conveyer belt. “The chicken is sent like that!”

Yuri checked it out and wowed. Everyone adored her again.

“Thank you so much, Imonie,” Hitomi added. “I haven’t eaten sweet and sour chicken from here before so thank you for bringing us here.”

Eunbi and Chaewon joined, even Yuri through a hug. Hyewon felt relieved and thankful to them as well. All the stress from before was replaced with excitement to try the dishes. Yuri even sang a song to cheer everyone up. Chaewon and Hitomi joined her little dance whereas Eunbi and Hyewon were delighted to watch them. Yuri became energetic and made pats on Chaewon and Hyewon’s chins while singing. All of them ended up imitating Yuri’s breakdown sound effects and laughed afterward.

The food was served to them by the manager and they cheered. They opened the warm box of deliciousness and wowed of the huge portions. There was even an addition of boneless fried chicken, leaving Hyewon to be shocked and to thank the manager many times.

“This looks good~” Hitomi cooed while taking a picture.

“I haven’t tasted their fried chicken so I’m excited~” Chaewon cooed and took a picture too.

Eunbi reprimanded her again but Hyewon calmed her down, saying it was okay. She took photos of the children and the food.

“Join in, Eunbi-ssi,” Hyewon added.

Eunbi felt shy until Hyewon called the children for a selfie. Eunbi joined them this time and after that, they said grace to the food.

“Both are delicious~” Hitomi commented as she tried both chicken varieties.

“Even the bread~” Chaewon added as she ate one piece.

Hyewon agreed with the comments and ate silently. She also fed Yuri and the cute girl expressed the deliciousness through a little dance.

“Crispy outside and tender inside. It’s also warm.” Eunbi added as she ate. “I bet they used an iron cauldron to cook this.”

Hyewon was fascinated. She noticed Eunbi taking smaller bites that she patted her back. “Have some more, Eunbi-ssi.”

Eunbi nodded again and mostly ate the spicy variety. Hyewon took that note in her head while commenting. “You like spicy food?”

“She does, Miss Hyewon,” Chaewon answered for her, earning a bulging glare from her mother. “She also likes bite-sized chicken so thank you again for taking us here.”

“Mommy,” Yuri called as she held a huge garnish with her chopsticks. “Is this almond?”

“That’s garlic, Yul.” All of them spoke then laughed at Yuri’s shocked face.

“I thought I was eating almonds…” Yuri pouted while looking at the garnish.

“Wait…” Chaewon had a closer look. “…is it?”

“What is it?” Yuri asked again.

“That’s garlic, Yul,” Eunbi answered and showed another piece. “See this? This is its base.”

Yuri wowed then sang, “I love you, garlic~”

“You embarrass me sometimes, Yul.” Hyewon chuckled.

“Mommy, why~?” Yuri whined.

“Joke only,” Hyewon added.

The manager returned with a free soda. Eunbi calmed Hyewon down from thanking her too much. She also served them their glasses.

“Always a pleasure. I hope you enjoy it.” The manager spoke before leaving.

All of them thanked her again, including Eunbi for serving their glasses of the drink.

“Eomma, why give me the small one?” Chaewon pouted.

“Because you can’t have too many sweets.” Eunbi reasoned.

Chaewon thanked her regardless, leaving Hitomi to see the different parenting styles within the table. Hyewon had the gist too and was more impressed at how Eunbi always disciplined Chaewon. She wondered if she can do that to Yuri too.

Can she even raise a small iron fist towards her cute daughter?

“Sokcho Central Market has a lot of kind and generous people,” Yuri commented and everyone agreed to it.

“That’s what the people here live by, Yul,” Eunbi added.

Chaewon and Hitomi nodded about it. Hyewon and Yuri were impressed.

“This combination is good…” Hyewon pointed at the food. “…just like its people.”

Eunbi nodded with that statement. They resumed their meal until Yuri voiced. “Yujin would love this, Mommy.”

“Yujin?” Eunbi and Chaewon asked.

“Another goddaughter,” Hyewon commented. “She specifically wanted to eat sweet and sour chicken here.”

“I remember her nagging to me to buy some here, Imonie,” Hitomi added, leaving her and Hyewon to chuckle.

“It’s a shame for her to not try some here,” Yuri added then had an idea. “We should bring her some when we return to Seoul, Mommy.”

“Yul, Mommy doesn’t have old banknotes.” Hyewon reminded her again.

“Eomma! Let’s cook some.” Chaewon suggested. “Miss Hyewon, Hiichan, and Yuri can try, and maybe they can bring some to this Yujin fellow.”

“You cook this?” Hyewon asked.

Eunbi was in panic again. She wondered as to how Chaewon had a tactless mouth sometimes.

“I do, Hyewon-ssi. However, I don’t serve them because the customers love crab more.” Eunbi added.

Hyewon had another thought. She decided to talk about it. “Eunbi-ssi, can you cook this for us in the future?”

Eunbi was still yet chewed the chicken. The children perked up with the suggestion, especially Yuri. Eunbi had many thoughts as to how can Yuri can be irresistible but she was winning, even for her.

“I can,” Eunbi added. “If you can come to the restaurant again, I’ll cook it for you.”

The children cheered as Hyewon applauded. The uncertainty Eunbi had was gone thanks to smiles from a cute girl.

Two girls.

“After this, let’s have some gelato at Nako’s place~” Chaewon suggested.

Eunbi shook her head yet Hyewon agreed. Yuri was excited to see another friend whereas Hitomi was excited to try new food. Chaewon felt victorious and called Nako. “Kinako.”

Yeah. What’s up?

Hyewon, Eunbi, and Yuri greeted her too. Nako’s demeanor softened in hearing the adults, especially Yuri. The remark made Chaewon chuckle. “We’re going there to eat gelato there. Reserve us an advanced order and a table.”

Sure. That’s four orders?

“Five, Nako-chan. I brought my goddaughter with us.”

I’ll whip us five potato gelatos for you all.

“You’ll never guess where we are.” Chaewon grinned. “We’re at Mansuk.”

No way! I always wanted to eat chicken there! How did you even have some? A box is very pricey.

“Miss Hyewon treated us~”

Nako’s whine could be heard. Hyewon noticed that there was still more so she spoke. “We have some more here, Nako-chan. How about we bring them to you so you and your mother can eat?”

“Mommy’s words are granted, Kinako~” Yuri added. “We’ll bring some for you.”

Nako’s cheers were heard. Hitomi adored her godmother’s kindness as much as Chaewon did. Eunbi was the most impressed as Hyewon and Yuri’s kind hearts flattered hers.

I’ll reserve a private table for us. See you all soon.

“See you.” Chaewon grinned and hung up.

“Is everyone ready to go?” Hyewon asked, getting nods from everyone. “Manager-nim, we’ll take the rest to go~”

“Right away~” She returned and went to take the remaining food away.

They waited for the food to be packed. Hyewon thought this wasn’t enough so she decided to ask the three. “Are there other good stalls here?”

“There’s a lot, Hyewon-ssi,” Eunbi added. “The market is a haven for many foods, after all.”

“Hmmm…why don’t we tour around the market for a while?”

“But we don’t have any money, Imonie,” Hitomi said.

Hyewon face-palmed herself as Yuri consoled her. Chaewon and Eunbi joined in feeling bad until Eunbi had an idea. “There’s a stall that sells calamari bread. They’re not strict with the banknotes.”

Hyewon perked with the idea. She had the urge to yeet out of this itinerary so they can have decent bites to eat. All of them decided to go, just in time for the take-out to be received.

“Lead the way, Eunbi-ssi.” Hyewon grinned.

Eunbi nodded as she and Chaewon went ahead. Hyewon, Hitomi, and Yuri followed, thanking the manager along the way.

The trip to the said stall was blocks away so they had to walk along with the market. Despite having the precaution that they had no money to buy anything, they looked around. The children were steps ahead, leaving the adults to walk side by side. It was palpable tension for them again yet Hyewon mustered her courage.

“Eunbi-ssi…I’m sorry for this evening.”

“What are you talking about?” She nudged her. “We got free dinner plus a struggling yet fun time. Thank you for today, Hyewon-ssi.”

“Really? Was it a good time?” Hyewon reassures herself.

“It was,” Eunbi spoke. “I’ll be honest. Ssamu had a point before. I haven’t got rest or had fun like this since I opened the restaurant and I’m glad that we had this wonderful evening.” She looked from afar towards the children. “I haven’t seen Ssamu smile like that for a long time. She looks so happy with your daughters.”

Hyewon followed her gaze, chuckling as Yuri was being pulled away by Hitomi from getting distracted on another gelato stall. Chaewon would join Yuri’s antics and both made cute growling noises while walking ahead.

“Thank you too,” Hyewon added. “I enjoyed this moment, especially when I saw Yul so happy. And…”

“And?” Eunbi asked.

“…and especially when I saw you happy.”

“We’re here~!!” Chaewon cheered, pointing at the stall.

Both adults had to get away from the tension and checked the stall. All of them wowed at the variety of steamed bread.

“Good evening. What can I get you all?” The owner greeted.

“We’ll have the calamari bread, Imo~” Chaewon spoke.

“Hold on.” Eunbi stopped her. “How much is a piece?”

“That’ll be ₩2,000.”

“Do you accept new banknotes? Credit cards?”

“We only accept banknotes from Sokcho’s main bank.” She showed a sign. “If your money starts with this part of the code, we’ll accept any bill regardless of how old or how new.”

Hyewon nodded and went to check her money. Eunbi decided to help her, agape seeing Hyewon’s full wallet of fresh mint bills. Nonetheless, they looked at every bill and coin for any similar cash while the children waited and looked at the steaming pot of delicious bread.

“I only have three ₩2,000 bills,” Hyewon spoke. “Two won’t get to eat.”

Hyewon ed herself from this predicament and bought three pieces of bread for the children. They got excited to get a piece but they noticed that the adults had nothing.

“But Mommy…” Yuri pouted. “What about you and Miss Eunbi?”

“It’s okay, baby.” Hyewon patted her head as Eunbi nodded with her. “What’s important is you three get to eat.”

“Eomma, I don’t want to eat when you don’t.” Chaewon sighed. “Take mine.”

“Ssamu, it’s okay.” Eunbi patted her back. “Eat it while it’s still hot.”

Hitomi froze despite taking bites from her share. Chaewon and Yuri didn’t want to eat when their parents can’t. The adults consoled their children but the two identical kids didn’t want to. If Hitomi had her feisty inner conscience out, she’d tell them to give their bread to her since she loved it.

The clerk saw it all and decided to give a piece for free. However, she proposed the children do aegyo.

“Hyewon-ssi?” Eunbi watched Hyewon walk away while face-palming.

Eunbi drew closer to her and saw her pout while muttering. For a moment there, her conscience ogled at how cute she was.

“I mean…giving only ₩20,000 is a big joke. There’s five of us!” Hyewon muttered. “The agency should’ve given us thrice the amount! ₩20,000 is too small!”

Her bickering had to stop when she saw Eunbi looking at her. She almost choked on her spit for her little stunt, especially when Eunbi was laughing. Hyewon coughed to regain her composure and asked, “How are the children?”

Eunbi drew closer to pat her back. Hyewon was shocked by the proximity and the pat that she hiccupped her nervousness.

“They’re trying,” Eunbi spoke as they looked at them.

Hitomi had the cutest features of the three but she was having none of it. Chaewon tried but she was too fierce. Yuri became the ace and pleaded for the free bread. She was even close to crying because she wanted Hyewon and Eunbi to eat too.

Her aegyo became effective. They got the free bread but only that free bread.

“Thank you~” Yuri bowed while accepting the bread before running to the adults. “Mommy~ Miss Eunbi~”

Hyewon got to her level and thanked Yuri for her effort. Yuri fed Hyewon the free bread and the mother reacted with puffy cheeks. The sight made Eunbi’s conscience bite a fist.

“Mommy, that’s a big bite~” Yuri whined. “What about Miss Eunbi~?”

“Sorry.” Hyewon stood up and divided the bread. “For you, Eunbi-ssi.”

It was Eunbi’s turn to blush. She thanked Hyewon and received her share. She ate the piece and was happy to taste good bread. The children were happy that the adults had their share and ate theirs.

“Thank you~,” All of them said to the owner as they left.

“You’re welcome~ come back again with Sokcho banknotes~”

“What an evening…” Hyewon spoke and all of them laughed. “Hiichan, remind me to scold your mother for this trip. She may be funny but she has no conscience!”

“Will do, Imonie~” Hitomi laughed the loudest.

They did one last stroll around the market before returning to the car. The adults managed to eat their shares and helped the children inside the car. All of them hopped in and Hyewon drove back to Abai Village.

“Thank you for this evening, Miss Hyewon.” Chaewon bowed lightly. “We may have had the struggle of money, you did your best to treat us.”

“Ssamu’s right, Imonie.” Hitomi joined her. “Thank you for tonight.”

“Thank you, Mommy, ~” Yuri did a heart sign. “You’re the best.”

“You’re all welcome.” Hyewon smiled back as she drove.

“Thank you, Hyewon-ssi,” Eunbi spoke. “This was one of the best evenings ever.”

Hyewon’s cheeks had a little blush on them. Nonetheless, she replied. “You’re very welcome, Eunbi-ssi.”

The drive became calm until they reached their destination. As promised, they had a pit stop at the gelato stall. Nako and Sakura welcomed them towards a private table and they all gathered to eat the remaining food.

“Thank you for this, Hyewon-san,” Sakura spoke as she indulged in the squid bread. “This is delicious.”

“It’s also a first,” Nako added as she enjoyed the chicken. “No wonder this is pricey. This is delicious.”

Hyewon accepted them as she indulged in blueberry gelato. Despite promising that they’ll cater potato gelato for them, they stuck serving the newest flavor instead. After all, receiving such good actions from good people made them think to make up for such.

It was the will of the Sokcho people. Happiness is possible in generosity, indeed.

“This is delicious,” Hyewon commented about the gelato. “This will be as good of a bestseller as the potato gelato.”

The children nodded and ate wholeheartedly. Eunbi gave Sakura a thumbs-up for it.

“I’m curious about you, Hyewon-san. In all seriousness, who are you?” Sakura asked.

“I was originally born in Yangsan, lived in Busan when I got married and had Yuri, then lived in Seoul because of work,” Hyewon spoke. “I’m a businesswoman and lawyer.”

All of them wowed as Yuri cheered for her mommy. Sakura was the most impressed among them. “That’s awesome. No wonder you looked too classy to be in this area.”

“And Yuri looks like a little princess. Classy like her mother.” Nako commented.

“You and your tactless mouth.” Sakura sighed and almost scolded her daughter. “I can’t believe you got your stupid father’s characteristics.”

Nako whined not to talk about her father. Chaewon and Hitomi shared the same sentiment. Sakura apologized for her words until Hyewon spoke. “We all come from the same root, then?”

“No way…” Eunbi was shocked together with Sakura. “…are you…”

Hyewon nodded, patting Yuri’s back as she felt uncomfortable. Sakura lets Nako and the children move to another table so the adults can talk. Nako called the children and they moved to another table to talk about things for their age. The three adults remained and resumed their talk.

“All of us are single mothers trying to raise our children, I presume,” Hyewon spoke.

Sakura nodded with a thumbs-up. Eunbi sighed sadly and nodded with her.

“My husband died during his naval expedition. He was our only breadwinner and back in Japan, I faced scrutiny from his in-laws because of his death. When I got pregnant with Nako, I had to move here to start over.” Sakura shared. “My Nako may be feisty but she’s my only family. It gave me more motivation to work hard and take care of her.”

Eunbi consoled her because she knew it beforehand. Hyewon felt sorry, sharing her story. “I divorced my wife when Yuri started elementary school.”

Eunbi and Hyewon were shocked at first but understood. Hyewon showed a picture in her wallet; a complete family picture that had a tear on one side, losing the other person’s head.

“Jo Heeji is her name. She looks exactly like Yuri and she’s a year younger than me. We got married pretty early and had a great life. Heeji bore Yuri through a special IVF wherein our two egg cells formed a fertilized egg. Having Yuri was the greatest blessing immeasurable with the success I had.”

Eunbi and Sakura adored her. It made sense with Yuri’s positive nature and cute aura. Hyewon has raised her well.

“What happened between you and your wife?” Eunbi asked. “Why did you break up?”

“Heeji wasn’t a good influence to Yuri. She started to drift away and started gambling and other vices. She would steal money from me for gambling and used Yuri as an excuse for her wrongdoings. I didn’t want that for my daughter so we broke up.” Hyewon sighed. “I may be providing all of Yuri’s needs but custody is in Heeji’s favor until Yuri becomes a teenager.”

“Is it why you went here for a vacation with her?” Sakura guessed, getting a nod.

“But aren’t you a lawyer?” Eunbi asked. “Can you do something against that?”

“Custody of minors will always fall to the mother or parent who gave birth to them, regardless of any factors. It’s the law.” Hyewon spoke. “Bonds with her are always necessary, not because I want to win Yuri’s favor but because she’s my daughter. I love her like everything that I would do anything for her.”

They looked at a jolly Yuri. She was the youngest of the four. Hitomi always had the unnie vibe and Chaewon and Nako were joining. Chaewon was the closest to her at this time, not because they looked alike but they had a bond like no other despite their short meeting.

“What about you, Eunbi-ssi? What’s your story?” Hyewon asked.

Eunbi hesitated to talk about it. If their circumstances were measured, hers was the worst. Sakura would’ve told Hyewon that it wasn’t going to be shared but Hyewon was a step ahead, patting Eunbi’s back. “It’s okay if you won’t tell. I’m sorry for prying again.”

Sakura cooed at Eunbi, leaving the latter to blush. In her heart, Hyewon had gone too wholesome. She was beautiful, rich, and kind. She was an ideal partner that anyone would want.

“Imonie~” Hitomi called, patting a sleepy Yuri’s head.

Hyewon saw Yuri and got to her. All of them adored the pair as Hyewon carried Yuri and cradled her.

“We should be heading home,” Eunbi said. “Thank you for the gelato, Kkura.”

“No sweat, Eun,” Sakura added. “Thank you and Hyewon-san for the chicken.”

The adults and children spared their greetings and gratitude for the time and food. Sakura and Nako bid farewell while they got in Hyewon’s car. Hyewon was placed inside her seat as Chaewon and Hitomi were in between to lull her. Hyewon and Eunbi got to their seats and drove back to the restaurant.

“You know, the restaurant is just a walk away,” Eunbi spoke.

“It’s fine. It’s already dark. You and Chaewon shouldn’t walk at a time like this.” Hyewon reasoned.

Eunbi knew Hyewon had a point. In just a few seconds, they were at the restaurant. Eunbi got out first as she thanked Hyewon while Chaewon took a while because Yuri was leaning on her. Hitomi helped in and lets Yuri lean on her side.

“Thank you again, Miss Hyewon.”

“You’re welcome, Chaewon.” Hyewon smiled. “Thank you also for cradling Yuri while she slept.”

“Thank you, Hyewon-ssi,” Eunbi spoke.

“You’re welcome, Eunbi-ssi. I’m glad you and Chaewon appreciated it,” Hyewon replied. “See you tomorrow at lunch.”

“Wait. You’ll have lunch here?”

“Yes. I promised Yul we’ll always have lunch when we’re here,” Hyewon smiled.

“Okay. I’ll prepare the best snow crab for you.”

Hyewon smiled and waved. Hitomi also bid her farewell to Eunbi and Chaewon as the car drove away. Eunbi and Chaewon’s waves died with the wind but their smiles remained.

“That was a great day.” Chaewon shook her head, chuckling. “Miss Hyewon is so kind and Yuri’s so cute.”

Chaewon went ahead, leaving Eunbi to remain outside. She took a while to process everything but like Chaewon, she loved the evening. It was the most fun moment she’ll ever have and never forget.

She’ll never forget, especially when Hyewon plastered a smile…

…that beautiful smile.

She chuckled just like Chaewon and finally got inside, concluding the night.

+++

The trip to Hitomi’s dorm and back to the hotel was the best calm time Hyewon had. Her daughters were happy with the little trip and although she struggled financially – which she wasn’t supposed to – she managed to make it through the night, treating people with good food and making good memories. When they got to the hotel, she slowly carried Yuri to their room. She also changed Yuri in her sleep and lets her savor it while changing herself to join with her daughter…

…especially when Yuri whined for her presence.

As Hyewon got to bed, Yuri cuddled her. Hyewon kissed her cheek and joined her in slumber.

Her memories of this fine evening continued in her dreams. Her dreams were free to process everything. Like Yuri, she loved the evening. It was the most fun moment she’ll ever have and never forget.

She’ll never forget, especially when Eunbi plastered a smile…

…that beautiful smile.

She smiled in her sleep as much as Yuri did, concluding the night.
