Lee DongHae and I

Complications

Donghae’s POV

Donghae: It will be all over soon. Appa is here.

I hugged Soohae even tighter. We were at the hospital Soohae as born at, getting her last vaccination. Soohae leaned her head on my chest whilst the doctor started to inject the fluids into her. When the doctor was done, I applied pressure to the place where she was injected to stop it from bleeding.

Doctor: All done, Soohae!

Donghae: Thanks.

He walked back to his desk.

Doctor: It’s all good. It’s nice to finally meet you Mr. Lee. I remember Ms. Lee being pregnant and coming for checkup every month almost always alone. I mean, sometimes, a boy would come with her. Mir, was it? I thought they looked so good together. Honestly, if Ms. Lee wasn’t already pregnant, I think I would have already made a move on her. You’re a lucky guy.

I almost choked after hearing what the doctor said. Damn, another person wanted to court my wife. How could Mir let her come to the hospital alone? Such an irresponsible person! But really, who am I to tell others that they are irresponsible. Even though I didn’t know ____ was pregnant then, I still consider it as my fault for not knowing at all, and therefore, I was irresponsible.

_____: haha, what are you talking about doctor? My husband is one jealous guy. If I were you, I would probably have not said that! But anyway, thank you for helping me so much back then.

Doctor: No problem. It’s my job as a doctor.

He opened the door for us and we left.

My POV

On the drive home from the hospital, I noticed Donghae being unusually quiet and was about to ask him whether there was anything wrong. But I decided not to as Soohae was sleeping and I didn’t want to disturb her.

We got home, cooked dinner and ate. I then took a shower, and when I was done, I told Donghae to take a shower whilst I tuck Soohae into bed.  After tucking Soohae into bed, I checked that the door was locked and all the electrical appliances were turned off before returning to the master bedroom ready for a good night’s sleep.

I returned to the master bedroom to see Donghae sitting on the edge of the bed looking down whilst drying his hair with a towel.

I walked towards him and took the towel from him, to dry his hair for him.

______: Is there a problem?

He shook his head slowly.

I looked at him knelt before him, holding his hands.

_____: If it’s about what the doctor said at the hospital, he doesn’t mean it.

Donghae: no its not.

_____: Then what is it Donghae? You know you can tell me.

 He sighed.

Donghae: It’s just I feel as though I have missed out on so much. Even though you say that it’s alright, it isn’t with me. I want to be able to experience what a father should experience. The whole process.

I looked down, finally realizing how important it is for Donghae to be a father that did not miss out on anything.

Donghae: Let’s have a baby.

He looked at me with a straight face, whilst I could feel my face reddening.

Donghae: I want to be able to keep journals and take photos long the way. I want to be there for you the moment that I know that you’re pregnant, and the moment that the baby is conceived. I don’t want to miss out on anything anymore. I want to be a good father to my children and especially a good husband to my wife. So, let’s have a baby.

He looked at me with sincerity whilst I felt as though I was going to explode from embarrassment.

_____: Donghae, you shouldn’t ask me to have a baby. You should just do it. Its embarrassing talking about this you know?

He finally smiled at me and started to kiss me. I wouldn’t want to go into full detail, but to keep it short and sweet; we ended up tangled under the blankets in the morning.

“DongHae?” I muttered, as morning light seeped through the gap between the curtains. DongHae shifted and pressed me to him.

“Mmm?”

“Morning,” I smiled, my eyes still closed. DongHae pressed his lips on my forehead and kissed me down my cheeks and stopped at my jawline. I grinned and peeled my eyes open, and was greeted by a pair of smiling eyes. I pulled him closer to me and laughed.

“What?” he asked.

“Nothing,” I said, playing with his hair. “I just like this.”

“This?” he frowned a little but smiled. “What do you mean?”

“This – everything,” my lips pulled back into a wider grin, “How we’re together and everything else in between and around it.”

He snickered. “That is so deep.” I frowned and he chuckled, my cheek. “But I like that too.”

“We should get up before SooHae does,” I said. DongHae groaned and when I sat up, he wrapped his arms around my waist, clamping me down and stopping me from doing my basic morning routine.

“Lee DongHae, I would appreciate you letting me go,” I said sternly.

“No,” he whined.

“Lee DongHae, as a grown man I think you have absolutely no permission to whine,” I smacked his hands that locked me down.

“Nooooo.”

“Okay, five more minutes,” I said, turning to pinch and pull his cheeks.

“Ow ow ow ow ow!” He held the sides of his face and I smiled and jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom. “You better be up when I get out,” I smiled slyly as I shut the bathroom door behind me.

“Yes omma,” I heard him groan as I caught a glimpse of him pulling the covers back over his head. I rolled my eyes and thought about the kid I married to.

…..

After lunch, we dropped SooHae off at DongHae’s parents’ place, who called in to take her to the aquarium for a day (since there was a discount for senior citizens and children, they claimed). So DongHae and I had the entire day for ourselves and honestly, it felt weird. Sensing something amiss, DongHae halted in his footsteps on the road.

“What’s up?”

I shook my head. “Nothing. It just feels weird that SooHae won’t be with us for the whole day.”

“But this isn’t the first time it happened,” he replied, cocking his head to the right. He put his hand on the small of my back and we walked to the car.

“Yeah but… I don’t know. I feel weird.” I was about to reach for the car door when DongHae tugged on the back of my shirt and leaned in to whisper in my ear.

I could feel him grinning as he said, “Maybe it’s because of what we did last night. It was nice to see you like that.” My face grew red instantaneously and I smacked the crap out of Dong Hae.

“Lee DongHae, I swear!” But DongHae threw his head back laughing out loud and unlocking the car. I hopped in and slammed the door shut, glaring at him as he entered the car.

Lee DongHae, I swear!”

“Swear on what?” He asked, shutting the door behind him. He turned to me and proper his elbow beside my head rest. “Swear how much you love me?”

I buried my face in my hands as my cheeks burned. “You know I get embarrassed when you say things like that!”

“And I like it,” he declared proudly, before starting the car and zooming off. We drove down the highway and cruised along the streets of Seoul, with a place not yet in mind.

“So what should we do for the day?” I asked. “Your parents wouldn’t give SooHae back early even if I begged a hundred times and cooked a buffet for them,” I joked. “They adore her.”

DongHae smiled and couldn’t agree more. “They do. It’s also because hyung hasn’t exactly planned on his wedding yet.”

“When’s he planning to get married?” I enquired. DongHae shrugged.

“I don’t know. He’s been busy with work and stuff so I’m guessing not anytime soon.” DongHae looked disappointed but at the same time, rigid. I rested a hand on his, which lay hanging near the gears.

“The time isn’t right for him then. We’ll just have to wait and see.” Stopping at a red light, DongHae turned and smiled at me. Grabbing my hand, he squeezed it tight before kissing it.

“I have a place in mind that we can go to.”

“Oh? Where?”

“It’s a secret,” he said, grinning proudly. I groaned.

“I swear DongHae; you are the biggest K-drama-inspired romantic idiot I could ever be with.”

He sighed and something in his eyes seemed to sparkle with pride. “I know,” he said, making a turn at a junction. “And that’s why you love me.”

“Oh someone save me,” I said, laughing as I covered my eyes with a hand. DongHae chuckled as the car finally came to a stop.

“Oh?” I said, recognizing the place.

“We should get something to eat, shouldn’t we?” We both got out of the car. It was the weekend and people were bound to be out and about. But I wasn’t prepared for the hundreds of pairs of eyes that turned in our direction when we stepped out of the car. I knew DongHae was famous and I knew what I signed up for when he had broadcast our relationship. But I don’t think that even after all the times that we had gone out together, I would not get used to the prying eyes that seem to follow us wherever we went.

Sensing my anxiety, DongHae walked over coolly and grabbed my rigid hand. He tapped my chin and gave me a smile. “Hey, if you want to go somewhere else, we can,” he whispered. I glanced around and saw the thousands of phones aimed at us.

I squeezed his hands tightly and let out a sigh. I shook my head. “No, I have to get used to this.” DongHae grinned.

“Since we’re already out here and they’ve spotted us, let’s give them something to talk about.” DongHae leaned in and kissed me on the forehead. Several screams and shrieks were heard amongst the girls in the crowd and he pulled me into the café that screamed nostalgia to the both of us. DongHae smiled at my reddened face.

“You know, that ‘kiss’ could have been the death of me.” DongHae laughed and we sat down at our usual spot and ordered milkshakes and some cakes.

“This place hasn’t changed a bit,” I said, sighing, taking in the café’s warmth and its nostalgia.

“We came here a few weeks ago,” he said. I blinked, and then laughed.

“Right. But you never know when it might change. Everything’s changing so quickly,” I said. Then, sighing, I added. “I remember coming in here with Kyu after school. This will always be a special place for me and I don’t want it to change.” I gazed into DongHae’s eyes and smiled. “It’s where I officially met you too, so that’s a bonus.”

DongHae looked genuinely touched but before he could do anything cheesy, our food was ready and he went to grab it off the counter. We ate and talked there for about two hours and left the place hand in hand, once again surrounded by people (mostly girls) with their phones out in front of their faces.

When we left the place, I couldn’t help but heave a sigh of relief. “DongHae,” I called.

“Mmm?”

“Let’s go to the park. It’s such a nice day today and I just feel… Like going to the park.”

“The park it is,” he smiled. We drove past skyscrapers and apartments, but further down the road we were on, the towers grew smaller and smaller until we reached a park near an apartment complex. It wasn’t a park we often went to but since we were in the area, it was closer.

We stepped out and I couldn’t help but feel relieved that there weren’t paparazzi around us (or the sound of cameras clicking on phones). Grabbing DongHae’s hand, we started to walk along the footpath which was lined with thick trees.

As we were walking, there was silence between us but it was a warm silence. It was weird – feeling something like this. I never often felt like that, especially in a bustling city like Seoul. Sighing, I hooked my arm around DongHae’s and leaned against him.

“Mwoya?” he joked.

“Nothing,” I smiled. “I just like this.”

DongHae leaned down and kissed me on the top of my head. “Me too.”

We strode deeper into the park and found a bench by a small pond, and sat down.

“DongHae,” I started slowly. “This is embarrassing but,” I took in a deep breath. “I want you to know, you and SooHae were more than I could ever ask for.” I grabbed his hand and played with it to distract myself. “I don’t think I could ever be more in love with someone else.” Slowly, I looked up and saw DongHae’s eyes brimmed with tears.

Cupping my face with a hand, DongHae kissed me deeply and when he let go, he put his hands on my shoulders and frowned. “Are you sick?” He put a hand on my forehead. “Are you sure you don’t have a fever?”

I giggled. “No, I don’t.”

“It’s probably me who’s sick then. I imagining things,” he said. Then, he smiled. “You are the best thing that has ever happened to me, ______. All the things that have happened in my life – crazy, bad, good, insane, really insane, and really bad and really good – are thanks to you. I love my life even more with you in it.”

Touched by his words as I always have, I hugged him tight. And although I knew a long time ago that I would never let him go, it was a nice reminder from time to time why I would never let him go.

…..

We drove back to the house and I sat on our bed, checking for the time. It was 6.30pm and DongHae’s parents hadn’t called yet. I guessed that SooHae would be having dinner with her grandparents after all. I yawned, although I wasn’t actually feeling a little bit tired. Stretching, I fell back onto our comfortable bed which smelled of DongHae. I put my phone in front of me and started to check my e-mails when something crept up beside me and pounced over me, knocking my phone out of my hands.

“Lee DongHae!” I swear that was the only words I said recently.

“You know,” he said with a slightly slyness in his voice. “If you’re always lying on the bed, things might get a little…Rough in here.”

“LEE DONGHAE, I SWEAR!” I pushed him off me and sent him rolling down the other side of the bed. I buried my face in the sheets and smacked his legs continuously. He laughed and I felt him sit up. Leaning down, he kissed the back of my head and I smacked him again.

“Owwwwwwwww,” he whined.

“Lee DongHae,” I scolded. After a few seconds, I sat up and I knew my hair was in a mess, since DongHae gave a mockingly frightening scream.

“Ya, ya, ya, ya, ya!” I jokingly tried smacking him again but he grabbed my wrists and started laughing menacingly. Then, he pulled me to him abruptly and started kissing my face – all of it. I had to kiss him back to stop his private property (my face) raid.

Looking at me, I asked, smiling “What?”

“I love you,” he said.

“I love you too,” I replied, leaning in to give him another kiss.

“Sometimes having our parents steal SooHae from time to time isn’t so bad after all,” he chuckled and pushed my hair behind an ear. “I get to spend time with you.” He smiled and gave my hands a squeeze. Then, he winked. “A lot of time.”

“Lee DongHae, I swear if one more time----“But I was cut off by a surprise kiss on the lips. This guy, really.

“I can’t wait to see how SooHae will become, how she will grow up, who she will grow into,” he smiled. “I can’t wait to be the one to experience all of it.” He looked down, and reached out to touch my stomach. “And I want to experience it over and over again.” He smiled.

“You will.”

“I was going to say ‘if you know what I mean’, but I don’t want you screaming again. People would think I’m harassing you or something,” he replied.

It took me several moments and blank thinking to get what he meant. And when I finally got what he meant, I couldn’t help but yell, “LEE DONGHAE!”

And his name would always be the one I would call first. He was my husband, my best friend and my rock. I couldn’t think of anyone else I’d be with but him. Pushing all jokes aside, I grabbed him by his shirt and pulled him to me, embracing him in my arms, our bodies entangled. Our laughs chorused together as we ended off our childishness with a kiss. Even with all the things we’ve been through and the complicated lives we lived together, I would go through all of them over again, knowing that I would be with him in the end.

“I love you, DongHae,” I said, smiling at the man I love.

“And I, you,” he replied.

There was no place I’d rather be.
