Chapter 36

Dear Donghae

A Day - Super Junior

Narrator's POV

She ran off from inside the house to where he was standing. He turned around after hearing her voice, only to be crushed into her suffocating embrace. "Babo," Min Yu muttered, burying her face against the crook of Chunji's neck. She had dearly missed the smell of his skin, the warmth of his body next to her, and most especially, his love. They both used to take times like these for granted, but now it was the chance, though probably not the last, for them to reminisce the past.

On the other hand, Donghae left the studio early. He had already excused himself from eating lunch with Min Yu, and he just wanted to see her again. The lights inside her apartment were all switched off, so he assumed she was back at her parents' house. He smiled to himself and strolled on the way to the Park's residence, which was only about a few blocks away.

From the distance, he spotted a black car parked in the middle of the driveway. He quickened his pace, wondering if Leeteuk arrived home early from overseas and if Min Yu was already in the process of announcing the news. Of course he didn't want her to be all alone, and worse, misunderstood. Donghae watched as the front door opened, revealing Min Yu from inside.

She darted down the porch steps, across the lawn, and towards the lone figure standing beside the car. He froze on his steps, realizing that it was Chunji. Donghae continued walking as he watched their every move. His heart clenched after seeing her make the first move by hugging him, and he chewed on his lower lip as he walked closer. Chunji stood lifeless in front of her, afraid to move even an inch.

From the corner of his eye, the Teen Top member saw someone approaching. He cocked his head to the side and saw Donghae. Chunji tensed up in shock. He waited for the older one to storm to where he was and punch the life out of him. That's what he would do if he caught her girlfriend cheating. By any chance, were they already a couple?

Was Min Yu too eager to erase him out of her life?

Chunji's eyes looked like he was pleading, or asking for a signal. In response, Donghae gave him a smile. As the corners of his mouth twisted upward and reached his eyes sincerely, a tear fell down his cheek, but of course, no one else saw. Chunji took it as a permission for him to encircle his arms around her waist and pull her closer. Who was to say he didn't miss her the same way she did?

Donghae didn't want to ruin the moment he was just an audience to. He proceeded silently to the house and entered, closing the door as discreetly as possible. He removed his shoes, placing it properly on the rack behind the door. He wiped his tears away, making sure to erase any marks of his inner sadness. He saw the child busily drawing something on paper and coloring it, just like how he had seen Min Young the first time.

"Hey," he greeted with a warm smile.

Outside, the clouds started to darken altogether, giving the scene a dramatic effect, with lightning and thunder to match. "What did Ricky used to say about thunder? It was the gods playing bowling?" Min Yu asked, making them both laugh to ease the tension while she pulled away from his touch. "And Changjo added that the lightning was Google Map taking a picture of the earth," Chunji chuckled.

They stood awkwardly in silence, the unspoken words making more sense than the said ones, as Chunji had believed. "So you still wear it, huh?" he gestured to the ring on her finger. "Of course," she nodded to herself and held onto the ring unconsciously. "Well, it was nice seeing you again," he shrugged, gesturing to the car behind him. He jogged to the driver's seat and opened the door.

"Aren't you going to say goodbye?" she mumbled softly over the second thunder that erupted from above. Any second now, the skies would send a downpour on where she was, maybe even a storm. He stared at her, memorizing every nook and cranny of her beautiful face he knew he might not be seeing in a long time. "Min Young has been watching a lot of Disney, especially Peter Pan. And he specifically said not to say goodbye, because goodbye means going away. And going away means forgetting," she echoed the words of the boy who never grew up.

Chunji smiled and looked straight into her eyes. "I'll see you soon, then," he disappeared from view and entered his car. But, as if remembering something, he exited again.

"It's going to be cold tonight. Why don't you go inside?" he suggested before starting his car engine and driving off without another word. There was a loud rumbling sound from the dark night sky, and sure enough, it started raining.

From Chunji's rearview mirror, he could still see her standing on the same spot, letting the rain soak through her clothes. But he continued driving anyway. Right now, it wasn't his job to comfort her at times like these. He's leaving all the work to Donghae. Min Yu waited as his car became smaller and smaller, until it was out of her sight.  She searched for a comfortable place on the sidewalk to sit on, and settled on the cold concrete.

She tried catching raindrops on her hands, but only managed to take a hold of some, and those that she had held onto soon fell from her grip. She watched as the lightning tore through the thick, dark clouds that cover the stars and the moon. Her tears got in the way of her sight, the saltwater mixing in with the drops falling from the sky.

She was a mess, to say the least.

Donghae, in turn, would have expected her to be inside by now. But since she isn't, he decided to check. And of course, she was there, a dark silhouette sitting on the driveway. He left his half-eaten dinner on the table and grabbed an umbrella. He lived up to his promise of being useful, even if it also meant that he was the cover-up for the heartbreak Chunji had left.

Min Yu was absorbed in her own thoughts when a person's loud footsteps against the rain puddles, followed by her being blocked from the heavy raindrops falling. "Did you catch any frogs today?" he appeared kneeling beside her, holding the umbrella over the both of them. She could only laugh at him while he also sat down beside her on the wet ground.

"What are you doing here anyway?" she asked. "Oh you know," he shrugged, "just obviously doing the laundry." Min Yu glanced his way and noticed his serious face. "Since when did you learn sarcasm?" she snorted with a light giggle. "How could I NOT learn from you?" Donghae replied as he rested his free hand on the middle of her back for support. "So what happened?" he pressed, although he didn't really expect a straight answer.

"I guess I just needed a closure. It was pretty stupid and cowardly to break up with someone over the phone. And now that we've seen each other again, I proved my theory to be right all along," she answered.

"What theory?"

"That people, like me for example, were born because soon, they would be important to somebody."

"So you were born to be important to Chunji?"

"Why, am I not important to you?" Min Yu turned to look straight into his eyes. She was just like Alice, lost in the Wonderland of his loving, brown orbs that seemed to have depths reaching to infinity. Well, if she was to be asked, she preferred not to be found. He leaned closer and rested his forehead against hers. "Of course you are. You want to hear my own theory? I made it up just now," he muttered, his hot breath bringing warmth to her cold skin.

"Fire away," she said. "The rain falls hardest on people who deserve the sunshine, or in your case, an umbrella," he explained, making her smile from ear to ear. Donghae's smile was wider than hers after he tossed the umbrella somewhere else, leaving them both unshielded from the rainfall. "Right now," he added while his eyes stared back at her, "it might be the hardest thing to do, but you can't start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one."

She smiled at his wise words. "Sweet. It just makes me want to kiss you."

"Then you should, because I won't stop you," Donghae replied and closed his eyes in anticipation.

"You know what's funny?" she whispered, making him groan in disappointment.

"Fine. What's so funny?"

"It's like we're in a movie," she closed the distance and pressed her lips against his. At that moment, she realized that the pain was worth it after all. He was worth it. He's all she could think about, and he has no idea how many times she regretted rejecting him. She had wanted him for so long, and right now, there's nothing more she could ask for.

But at the same time, she hated herself for being so scared.  Hurting him was the last thing on earth she wanted to do, that's why she never had the courage to tell him that yes, she would gladly be his girlfriend. Fear took the best of her. She was so afraid of disappointing him, of the day he would realize that she wasn't really what he was looking for, of him leaving her.

He pulled away first and breathed in sharply. "So, when will you be my girlfriend?" Donghae asked. "We'll tell my parents at dinner tomorrow night. That's the time we'll tell them. If my father faints and wakes up the next morning without slipping into a comatose, I'll say yes," she responded. He pushed her hair back and away from her face.

"You are the most beautiful person I've ever seen. And if your father doesn't have a heart attack tomorrow, then I'll be the happiest person in the world," he intertwined his fingers with hers and led her back to the house. "Well you are certainly an attractive person. Don't mind if I stare at you," she chuckled and swung their arms as they walked. "Feel free to do so while I continue my dinner that I haven't finished because I attended to you first," he bent down to grab the umbrella he had hurled to nowhere a while ago and lifted it up over their heads, not that it was helping them in any way.

Donghae chewed on his lower lip before finding the courage to ask, "How much do you love me?" She smiled and continued walking with him. "Enumerating how much I love you would be like describing how water tastes like," she explained. It wasn't the first time he wished she wasn't a writer, or else she wouldn't have said things with such complex metaphors. "Stupid?" he tried.

"Impossible," she corrected him. But he didn't seem contented with her answer. "Ugh. Fine. At least," she stretched her arms out wide, "I love you this much."

~Please show this chapter lots of love and comments ☺ I don't think I could update tomorrow, but I'll make the next chapter longer. By the way, what do you think Leeteuk's reaction would be? :D -min_neulmi ♥
