Ch.1: Life & Food Shopping

Phoenix Sisters

**Seoul, Korea, 2015**

A man wakes up to the sudden clash and shatter of dishes.  He gets up to sit on the bed and discovers that it was only 6:30am.

“It’s not even Sunday and they’re already making a ruckus?! How many times do they need to be reminded that its an apartment?” the man thought to himself while getting up to stretch before washing up. Even in the bathroom, he can still hear the chaos outside his bedroom door.  When he was finally finished, he decides to find out why there are so much noise in the early morning. He didn’t need to go far because by the time he got to the end of the hallway, he was clearly exposed to the cause of the noises.

There in front of him, he sees three girls: Two in the kitchen opposite from each other and one in the living room reading, ignoring the fight between the two individuals in the kitchen.

“Hey! Give that back Amber! That plate is valuable! You already broke too many!” the dark brown short-hair yelled.

“No way! Look what you did to my jacket.” Amber held up a cut up leather jacket. “Do you know how expensive this was?”

The man looked at Amber.  ‘She still has the  tom-boy  fashion  style and haircut’ he thought to himself as he suddenly let out a small laugh when he saw the short-hair girl throw an orange to Amber, causing Amber to duck.

“Nothing would have happened to your precious jacket if you didn’t mess around with my sandwich.  Do you know how horrible it tasted with the excess salt you put on the ham and lettuce? You ruined my lunch!” the dark brown short-hair girl screamed out to Amber.

Amber could not help but laugh at the girl’s reaction. Amber couldn’t believe her jacket was ruined for a sandwich.  It was just a prank she did because she was bored.

“Hey Taeyeon! Tell Sooyoung to apologize and stop throwing things at me!” Amber screamed out to the girl in the living room, in-between running around the kitchen, using the plate as a shield to stop Sooyoung from throwing more things.

Taeyeon put down her book and walked to the kitchen.  She looked at Sooyoung first, then Amber.  She was not happy at all, and they all knew that.

“Stop! You two are so childish! Dad is asleep and you guys wake up in the early morning to argue and make a commotion? He’ll wake up.” Taeyeon raised her voice a little as she lectured Sooyoung and Amber.  Taeyeon continued.

“Sooyoung, you will buy Amber a new jacket.” Amber smiled, satisfied with the outcome.

“But…that’s not fair! She-“ Taeyeon cut her off.

“Wait! I’m not done.  Amber, you will buy new dishes for Sooyoung and make her a new sandwich to make up for the one you spoiled.”  Sooyoung stuck her tongue out to Amber.

“What?! Are you serious Tae?” Amber asked, hoping she was just lying.

“Yes. I am serious. End of fight.  Now be quiet before dad wakes up.”

“Too late. I’m already up.” The man slowly made his way to the kitchen with a big smile on his face.

The girls turned toward their dad and gave him a hug.  They missed him so much.

“Hahaha. I missed my daughters a lot too.  Besides, I’ve been here for two days already you know?” he said, laughing a little after they broke the hug.

“We know. But you rarely visit us” says Amber.

“That’s true.  We are all going to spend as much time as possible with you before you leave tomorrow.  In fact, I’ll cook a special dinner for us tonight!” Sooyoung exclaimed excitedly as they made their way to the living room.

“Ok, Ok. You girls win.” Their dad tells them when they finally take their place on the sofas.

“So how’s the bakery?” he asked.

“Everything is great.” Sooyoung answered.

“That’s good to hear. Now girls, have you been practicing your martial arts without me?” he asked seriously.

All three daughters nodded their head.

“We practice everynight and whenever we have free time” Amber earnestly added, making sure that her dad knows their devotion..

“I assume Taeyeon still practices a lot harder huh?”

Taeyeon looks at her dad and turns back to looking at the ground.  Their dad faintly smiles at her before changing the subject.

“Excellent. Practice makes perfect. As assassins, you must always be prepared and in good health.  So, who will be completing the mission I mentioned yesterday?”

“Me.”

Their dad turned toward Taeyeon and gave her the envelope. Taeyeon opened the yellow envelope and took out a paper with a picture of a man in his early 40s clipped to it.

“His death will be critical to our goal.  If he’s gone, our enemy will have one less important supporter.”  The girls gather together to read the paper Taeyeon was holding.  Taeyeon began to read aloud:

“Mr. Song : A social-worker with the life of a chameleon.  His business consists of kidnapping and killing children for gangsters in return for large sums of money.  He uses his status as a social worker to lure and capture his victims. He has been arrested multiple times for possible involvement in gangster activities but released due to insufficient evidence.”

After reading the description, Amber and Sooyoung could barely hold in their anger.  Its people like him that they were in this position for over 14 years.

“Basically, Mr. Song is an accessory in human trafficking and the police can’t arrest this guy?” Taeyeon said, raising her voice a little.

“The police have no evidence.  He has his gangster friends to help him with all of his dirty work.” Their dad says, as he looks at the information. “Just make sure to finish him off tomorrow night.”

Taeyeon nodded her head. “You can count on me dad.”

“I know I can. I can count on all of my daughters.” He said with a smile.  Afterwards, he got up and pulled Sooyoung up as well.

“Come on Sooyoung. Let’s go grocery shopping for dinner.”

Sooyoung was taken by surprise but immediately got up to get ready to leave.  She loves shopping for food.  When she returned after getting dressed up, she reminded her sisters to go to the bakery.

“Amber! Tae! Take care of the bakery and I’ll be back as soon as possible to help out!” Sooyoung yelled before leaving with their dad to the grocery store.

“Okay. You heard the “shikshin”. Let’s go Taeyeon. It’s already 7:30am.”  Taeyeon nodded her head in agreement.  After 10 minutes, they finally arrived at their bakery: “Phoenix Bakery”.

( Phoenix Bakery is the “normal life” for Taeyeon, Sooyoung, and amber.  It gives them a break from their assassin lives.  At night, all of three of them are the most infamous assassins and most wanted by the police.  However, they don’t kill for money or for fame.  They kill for justice and righteousness.  Only kill those that are evil have met their ends with the three sisters.  Their dad taught them martial arts since they were kids and from then on, they were raised as assassins. He lives in Japan, since it was safer that they live separately.  )

“Yay! Finally! We are open for BUSINESS!” Amber excitedly yells as she unlocks and opens the doors.

“Hey dumbo! We open every day at 8am until 5pm.” Taeyeon told Amber when she returns to the counter.

“I know. But I just love this place.  I’m glad we have this bakery.  It makes me feel normal.” Amber sadly uttered.

“I know Amber” Taeyeon acknowledged and patted her younger sister’s back.

“Excuse me? I came to pick up a cake.” A woman sudden says.

At that moment, Amber immediately rushes to help the customer.  Taeyeon observes Amber’s action.

“And she claims to be nothing like Sooyoung.” Taeyeon thought to herself, while shaking her head slowly back and forth with hands on her hips.

“But, being normal? How would that feel like?” Taeyeon asked herself before being interrupted by Amber’s scream to help out another customer.

Sooyoung and her dad are in the grocery store gathering the ingredients for that night’s dinner.

“Dad, what do you want to eat?” Sooyoung asked as she picked out some tofu.

“Tom-yum soup and some of your famous stir fry.” Her dad answered with a smile to Sooyoung.

“Sounds good.  Then I guess we’ll need shrimp.” Sooyoung said as she realized that was the only ingredient left, after she got the tom-yum paste.

“I’ll go get it while you go buy ice cream for Amber. She told me she was craving for it yesterday.”

Sooyoung nodded her head.  After agreeing to meet at the cashier, both went their separate ways.

Sooyoung was making her way toward the frozen foods aisle until another cart crashes into hers.

“Hey! Watch where you’re going!” a female voice was heard seconds after the accident.  Sooyoung turns her head in the direction of the voice and sees two women.  One had long blonde hair while the other had long black hair.  The one yelling was the blonde. She was taller than the black hair girl.

“I believe you are the one at fault.  You came into my side without paying attention.” Sooyoung firmly asserted, making eye contact with the blonde.

Before the blonde can argue back, she was stopped by the black hair.

“Let’s go unnie. Don’t make a scene.”

“I’m sorry.” The black hair woman uttered before dragging the blonde away.  Since Sooyoung could not say anything more, she then went to the ice cream compartment and took out some neopolitan bars. Sooyoung then closed the ice cream compartment door only to find her cart speeding off alone.

“What the-!”  Sooyoung’s question was answered by someone’s snicker.

“That’s what you get for messing with me!” the blonde yelled to Sooyoung before being dragged away again by the black hair female.  Sooyoung gives them a glare before chasing after her cart. When she returned with the cart to the cashier, her father looked at her worriedly.

“Sooyoung. What happened to you? Why are you sweating?” her dad asked, a little amused at the idea that his daughter would want to exercise in the store.

After paying for the food, Sooyoung told the incident to her dad.  When she finished, he laughed.

“What’s so funny?” Sooyoung could not understand why her dad would laugh.  He’s not making her feel any better or less angry.

“I-I can’t believe she kicked your cart . Its so-so childish.” He managed to say in-between his laughter.

“Ha-ha." Sooyoung sarcastically let out a small fake laugh. "She pisses me off! She was the one at fault and she didn’t even apologize!” Sooyoung said angrily.

“Sooyoung. Calm down. You go through worse as an assassin.”

“You’re right. I won’t let that rude, ignorant, stick looking, blonde ruin our family day.”

It was about 4pm when both of them returned home.

“Sooyoung, its only 4pm.  You should go help your sisters close the bakery.” Her dad suggested.  Sooyoung took his offer.

“Okay.  You put these food away and when I return, I’ll cook. See you later dad” Sooyoung said as she left the apartment.
