Surprise

You Make Me A Good Man

(Three weeks later)

Hyunseung took Jihyun and Sohyun from Doojoon, smiling at his best friend as the elder thanked him. Balancing the twins properly on his hips, Hyunseung just said, “Go have a good day with him, alright? Leave the kids to me, Geurim and appa.”

Doojoon nodded, returning the smile and asking his girls to behave well for Uncle Hyunseung. Then, he waved as Hyunseung left and went back into his own house to begin making breakfast in bed for his boyfriend. Yoseob deserved it, because after all, it was his birthday.

He started with making chicken, since Yoseob just loved chicken, and moved onto making rice and traditional seaweed soup. He was glad that he was smart enough to prepare the ingredients last night. He knew, however, that Yoseob would probably wake up soon due to him not being in bed yet. With that thought in mind, he hurriedly finished the chicken and checked on the rice. Once the rice was done, he scooped it out into a bowl and placed everything nicely on a tray.

It was nearly 8am now, so Doojoon went back to his room with the tray of food, setting it down on the bedside table and placing a soft kiss on his boyfriend’s forehead. Yoseob stirred slightly, yawning and batting his eyelids to adjust to the brightness. He looked up at Doojoon and smiled that smile of his, the one that made Doojoon’s heart melt every time. “Morning Doojoonie.”

“Good morning,” Doojoon replied with a smile of his own.

He watched as Yoseob stretched slightly and sat up, rubbing his eyes tiredly before frowning as he registered the smell of food. His eyes darted towards the tray of food and lit up visibly, looking back at Doojoon with a grin. “Is that for me?” he asked excitedly.

Doojoon couldn’t help but chuckle and nod. “Happy birthday Seobie. Go wash up and dig in.”

Yoseob was out of bed in a flash, and finished washing up within two minutes. Then he was back in bed, sitting upright and placing the tray of food on his lap. He began eating right away, not having had a legit breakfast in bed before. Doojoon just smiled the entire time, glad that Yoseob was enjoying this little surprise of his.

Halfway through his breakfast, Yoseob looked at Doojoon and tilted his head in confusion. “The twins are being unusually quiet today…” he mumbled, looking towards the general direction of the nursery. He was about the get up and check on the two of them when Doojoon shook his head and gestured for him to sit back down.

“They’re with Hyunseung. Today it’s just going to be you and me, alright? We’ll pick the twins up after we’re done,” Doojoon assured him, knowing that Yoseob had a tendency to worry too much because of what happened with his first pregnancy. Even though the twins were already two and a half months old, he still worried that something would happen to them.

Yoseob nodded hesitantly, continuing to eat his breakfast and feeding some of it to Doojoon. When he was done, he offered to wash the dishes but Doojoon just told him to take a shower, because they had a long day ahead of them. Sighing, but smiling, Yoseob nodded and went to get some clothes to change into. He had a pretty good idea of what today was going to be like. Doojoon was probably going to spoil him and he liked the idea of that.

“Join me in the shower, at least?” he asked hopefully.

Laughing, Doojoon nodded. "Yes sir!”

------------------------------------

After a totally innocent shower, Doojoon and Yoseob got ready for the day. It was past nine already, and Yoseob had no clue where Doojoon was going to bring him to or how long they were going to be out. He kind of missed his babies, this being the first day since they were born that he didn’t need to take care of them. He knew, however, that the whole point of getting Hyunseung to take care of them was so that he and Doojoon could enjoy a childfree day, so he shook his thoughts off and focused on making himself presentable.

They left at ten, and Doojoon began driving without telling Yoseob anything about where they were headed. Yoseob looked around them, trying to figure out where the hell they were and failing miserably because he’d never been very good with directions. “Can you at least give me a hint about where we’re going?” Yoseob pleaded, making his best puppy eyes.

Doojoon stopped the car at the side of the road, giving Yoseob a look that he recognised. It was the look where he was hesitating, and on the brink of giving in. Yoseob blinked a few more times, adding a small pout that did the trick.

“Ok, fine, we’re going to the beach,” Doojoon surrendered, sighing when he realised that he didn’t give Yoseob a hint like he’d asked. He just gave away the answer without making Yoseob guess. Resisting the urge to slam his head against the wheel because he was dumb, Doojoon looked at Yoseob and smiled slightly upon seeing how excited the younger male was. “You kept mentioning that you hadn’t been to the beach since before your sister died, so I figured you’d like to go.”

“You brought clothes to change into?” Yoseob asked, his eyes almost literally sparkling.

Doojoon chuckled, nodding in response. “Can I continue driving now?”

Yoseob grinned in delight and nodded, and Doojoon was glad that he’d discussed today’s plans with Hyunseung. If not for his best friend, he probably wouldn’t have been able to come up with an itinerary for the whole day, up till after dinner.

The journey to the beach took nearly two hours, since they stayed pretty far from the sea. By the time they arrived, it was nearing lunch, so Doojoon drove to one of the nearby restaurants first. Yoseob had fallen asleep halfway through, and then woken up a half hour later. Doojoon could understand that Yoseob was exhausted; most times at night, Yoseob would be the one getting up to tend to the twins. One reason was that Doojoon worked full shifts now, usually in the morning, and Yoseob didn’t want him to be too tired. The other reason was that majority of the time, the twins would only stop crying when they heard Yoseob’s voice. Of course they recognised Doojoon’s voice, too, but they responded much better to Yoseob.

“Does steamboat sound good to you?” Doojoon asked.

“I’m not pregnant anymore, Doojoonie. I’m fine with anything,” Yoseob pointed out, laughing when Doojoon gave him an indignant look. “Let’s just go get some food, alright?”

It wasn’t too crowded, despite being a Sunday, and the couple was served rather quickly. They talked about the twins, about Yoseob’s plans to work part-time, about Hyunseung and Ilhoon, and anything else they could talk about. Lunch passed by quickly and they finished eating in a little more than an hour. Doojoon paid, and then they strolled down to the beach with their change of clothes.

They ended up playing in the water and then building sandcastles, because Yoseob was deprived of a normal childhood and Doojoon wanted to do everything in his power to make sure Yoseob got to experience that, at least once. Yoseob laughed because Doojoon’s sandcastle was ugly and disfigured, causing the elder to chase after him and they ended up playing in the water again.

At some point in time, the two of them just sat down, watching the other families play in the water and build sandcastles just like they did. Yoseob sighed softly, resting his head on Doojoon’s shoulder and looking up the elder. “Thanks for bringing me here, Doojoonie. And thanks for everything else, too. Accepting my past, putting up with my when I was pregnant, being the father of the twins, and just loving me,” Yoseob said, suddenly feeling emotional.

Looking back, the past eleven months had really changed his life. Previously he’d been staying alone, only had two friends, and didn’t have a job. Then he met Doojoon and everyone else, and he could safely say that his life had changed for the better. Obviously getting pregnant before marriage wasn’t ideal, but it did let him see that Doojoon’s feelings for him were real, genuine. He didn’t think anyone else would put up with his , especially during the period when he was so afraid of losing the twins just like he’d lost his first child.

He didn’t know how he’d fallen in love with Doojoon so fast and so hard, but if he was given a chance to change anything, he sure as hell wouldn’t. He wouldn’t give up Doojoon or the twins for anything in the world, because they were all he cared about.

“Seobie… you know that none of the things that happened in the past was your fault,” Doojoon told him, pulling the smaller male closer to him and resting his head atop Yoseob’s. “There’s nothing about you that I wouldn’t love, even the imperfections. They’re what make you, you. Now what do say we take a quick shower and change before heading back to Seoul?”

Yoseob nodded, turning around to give Doojoon a kiss on the cheek before they went to shower.

“Ew, you taste like seawater!”

----------------------------------

The drive back to Seoul was slightly shorter, although not by much, and this time Yoseob stayed wide awake. He held onto Doojoon’s hand the entire time, leaning against his boyfriend and singing along to the songs playing on the radio. It wasn’t that he wasn’t tired, but he just wanted to enjoy some time alone with Doojoon before they had to pick the twins up. He loved his baby girls, but sometimes he wondered what it’d be like if they were a normal couple, one that dated for a few months or maybe even years before having kids.

When they got back into Seoul, instead of driving back towards their apartment building, Doojoon started driving elsewhere. Yoseob had been confused at first, but as they neared the location he knew exactly where they were going: Namsan Tower.

A smile made its way onto his face when he remembered their triple date there, on White Day. He really wanted to do the triple date thing again, but Junhyung wasn’t with them and he was pretty sure that none of them wanted to leave Hyunseung out. Thinking about it now, he felt pretty bad for leaving Hyunseung alone with the kids while he and Doojoon had fun.

“Do you think Hyunseung hyung feels upset that we can come out on a date and he can’t?” Yoseob asked, breaking the silence. Doojoon sighed and nodded, knowing his best friend well enough to understand how he felt most of the time. Heck, anybody would be upset if their other half suddenly upped and left without a word, even if it was for everybody’s good. And while Junhyung was gone, all of them were still acting all lovey-dovey with each other.

“I feel guilty sometimes, when we hug or kiss while he’s around,” Doojoon admitted. Yoseob grimaced, realising that they did do that pretty often. It was just so natural for them to act like that that sometimes they forgot about the fact that Hyunseung was alone now. “Anyway, Seobie, it’s your birthday so let’s not think about such depressing stuff. We’re almost there.”

Yoseob nodded, shaking the thoughts off and just being thankful that Doojoon was with him. After parking the car, the couple went straight up to the roof where the love padlocks were. They walked over to the area where they put their padlock, trying to find it amongst the entire pile of padlocks. It took a while, but they did find it eventually and took a photo of it for memory’s sake.

By then it was nearing seven and both of them were hungry, so they went to have dinner at some fancy restaurant where Doojoon had made a reservation beforehand. They didn’t eat western food much, at least not the expensive kind, so Doojoon figured that he’d give Yoseob a treat. They were pretty thrifty nowadays, what with the twins needing diapers and stuff, and Doojoon knew that Yoseob would never want to eat at such an expensive restaurant on any other day.

Halfway through dinner, Doojoon’s phone rang and he picked up when he saw that it was from Hyunseung. Yoseob looked concerned, worried that something had happened to the twins.

“Seung, is everything alright?” Doojoon asked.

“Yup. Everything’s settled,” Hyunseung replied.

Doojoon pretended to frown. “Jihyun’s being extremely fussy? We’re eating now. Give us an hour.”

“No problem. Good luck!” Hyunseung exclaimed before hanging up.

Keeping his phone in his pocket, Doojoon looked up to see an extremely concerned Yoseob. “I guess we’ll have to eat quickly and get home to take care of Jihyun,” he told his boyfriend. Yoseob nodded immediately, his maternal instincts already kicking in. They finished the rest of their food within fifteen minutes, and Yoseob was thankful that he decided not to order dessert.

They paid quickly as well, and were in the car in minutes.

“I hope Jihyun’s not falling sick,” Yoseob mumbled, more to himself than to Doojoon.

Suppressing a smile, Doojoon hummed in agreement and continued the drive home.

----------------------------------

“Doojoon should be back soon! Is everything ready?” Hyunseung asked, looking around and doing a last check of the house. Gikwang and Dongwoon nodded, as did Geurim. Once Hyunseung was satisfied with the decorations of each room, he ushered everybody out of the house and up to his own apartment.

Locking the doors to his apartment, Hyunseung turned his laptop on, linking it to the camera that they’d hidden in Doojoon and Yoseob’s house. Dongwoon connected it to the TV so that they wouldn’t have to huddle around the small laptop, and they settled down on the couch with the three babies.

“You think it’ll work?” Gikwang asked, sounding almost excited.

“Doojoon’s a pretty good actor, so I think the plan will go on as expected,” Hyunseung replied with a smile. He really hoped that Doojoon’s plan would succeed, not only because he took a lot of effort in planning it, but because Hyunseung felt that his best friend deserved happiness.

Less than ten minutes later, Doojoon and Yoseob arrived home. The latter had wanted to go and pick the twins up first, but Doojoon had insisted that they drop by their own house. When asked why, Doojoon just said that he needed to pass something to Hyunseung and he left it at home.

Naturally, the house was dark when they first entered it. Yoseob moved to turn the lights on, but he was stopped by Doojoon. The elder felt around for another switch, and turned it on when he found it. Yoseob’s breath hitched in his throat as he read the words that were made with a long string of LED lights stuck onto the wall, much like the lights on a Christmas tree.

‘Happy birthday honey’ was all it said, but Yoseob couldn’t help but feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Obviously Doojoon hadn’t done this, so Yoseob made a mental note to thank their friends for helping Doojoon out with this. He hugged Doojoon tightly, smile growing wider as he felt the elder place a kiss on his crown.

“This isn’t all though. Close your eyes,” Doojoon murmured, earning a confused look from his boyfriend. “It’s a surprise. Now come on, close your eyes and follow me.”

Yoseob nodded, slightly hesitantly, and shut his eyes. He allowed Doojoon to pull him along, and roughly figured that they were headed to their bedroom. Similarly, instead of turning on the lights they had installed in there, Doojoon a separate set of lights. This time, the lights were hung on the ceiling instead of the walls, and lit the room up just enough to give it a somewhat romantic feel.

Doojoon let go of Yoseob’s hand, telling him to keep his eyes closed, and got into position.

“You can open your eyes now.”

Yoseob did as told, and felt his heart stop at the sight before him.

Surrounding his boyfriend were a whole bunch of rose petals, in the shape of a heart. Doojoon was of course standing in the centre of the heart, but what surprised Yoseob was the bouquet of flowers that he was holding. Their bed was shifted to the side to make space for the heart.

“Come here,” Doojoon said, beckoning the younger male over. Yoseob’s mind was completely blank, still in shock, but somehow he managed to walk all the way to the centre of the heart. He wordlessly took the bouquet from Doojoon, and gasped when the elder got down on one knee while pulling something out from his pocket.

“Oh my god,” Yoseob breathed out, nearly hyperventilating by now. His heart was beating like crazy, and he could feel his eyes tearing up because he was getting so emotional. He knew what was coming next, and he was so nervous that his legs felt like jelly.

“Yang Yoseob, I know we haven’t been together for long. It hasn’t even been a year. Despite that, we’ve been through quite a lot together, and already have two daughters. You might think it’s too soon, but I know that there’s nobody I’d be with other than you. So, Seobie, will you marry me?” Doojoon asked, opening the black velvet box to reveal the simple ring inside.

Yoseob’s hand flew over his mouth in an attempt to muffle a sob, but the tears spilled over anyway. He tried to reply, to say yes, but he couldn’t find his voice so he just settled for nodding. Doojoon smiled, getting up and grabbing Yoseob’s left hand to slip the ring onto his ring finger. He then pulled Yoseob into a tight hug, feeling his tears soak through the front of his shirt.

“Shh, don’t cry. Do you want to pick the girls up now?” Doojoon asked in an attempt to get Yoseob to stop crying. Yoseob nodded against his chest, and Doojoon chuckled slightly when the younger continued to cry. He put the bouquet of flowers away before scooping Yoseob up into his arms and going up to Hyunseung’s place.

“I love you,” Yoseob choked out, still a crying mess.

Doojoon kissed his forehead. “I love you too, so much, but stop crying please?”

“I can’t! It’s all your fault!” Yoseob wailed.

Doojoon rolled his eyes in amusement. “At least knock on the door for me?”

“Just put me down,” Yoseob mumbled, sniffling and trying his best to stop the tears. Doing as told, Doojoon put his boyfriend – now fiancé – down and knocked on the door himself. As expected, the door was flung open by an extremely happy Hyunseung.

“Congratulations you two!” he exclaimed, bouncing Ilhoon slightly and moving out of the way so that they could go into the house. Gikwang, Dongwoon and Geurim were also grinning, and all congratulated the now engaged couple. Sohyun and Jihyun were staring blankly at their parents, looking slightly confused because Yoseob’s eyes were red and puffy from crying.

“Thanks for all the help guys. Couldn’t have done it without you,” Doojoon said gratefully.

Hyunseung snorted. “What are friends for?”

“We were just going to pick the twins up and go home,” he added, walking over to get his daughters from Geurim and Gikwang. Thanking everyone once more, Doojoon and Yoseob headed back down to their house to get cleaned up and sleep. It was a pretty long day for them, after all.

“I guess you guys are heading back, too?” Hyunseung asked. Gikwang and Dongwoon nodded, already getting their stuff and heading over to the door. Geurim grabbed her bag as well, and the three of them left together.

Once they were gone, Hyunseung plopped down onto the couch and stared into Ilhoon’s eyes.

“When will it be my turn, Ilhoonie? When?”

After a minute of staring, Hyunseung laughed at how ridiculous he was being. “Let’s go shower and sleep too, alright?” he asked the baby boy. Ilhoon yawned in response, and Hyunseung laughed some more. He was happy for his friends, really he was.

It’d be nice if that could happen to me too, though.

Sighing, Hyunseung pushed his thoughts away and finished bathing Ilhoon. He quickly took a shower and went to bed, tired from taking care of three babies for the whole day.

He dreamt of being proposed to, that night. It was a nice dream.
