When He Performs a Song for You At a Concert

Optional Bias Scenarios

“Do you want to stand in the front and watch?” Your boyfriend smiled brightly, tapping the heels of his sneakers against the edge of the stage on which he sat. Staff members and stagehands scrambled about the stadium, checking and adjusting the lights, rigging, and set designs. One of his group members stood in the middle of the stage, exercising his voice and testing the microphones.

“Are you sure that’s okay?” You knew how rare it was for friends and relatives to stand in the very front of a performance, the wild excitement of fans posing a potential security threat to people familiar with the group. He grinned at you, leaning over to give an affectionate pat to your cheek.

“Of course it is! If you stand here,” he said, gesturing to the stage’s front, “you should be just fine. You’ll be right next to a security guard.” You nodded happily, eager to finally see one of your boyfriend’s concerts from the front. Being backstage was enjoyable and exciting, but it would be nice to see them performing up close.

One of his managers called him over for a sound check, and his stylists were finally ready to finish perfecting his hair.

“Jihoon over there can make sure you get to the front. I’ll be looking for you.” You smiled, discreetly offering him a soft kiss.

“Good luck! You’re going to do fantastic!” He grinned widely, hugging you once more before running to his manager. With the remaining hour before the concert began, you wandered the stadium with Minah, an assistant you befriended. The two of you chatted for a while, laughing and sharing hilarious stories about the boys backstage.

“I completely forgot about that! I’ll never look at enchiladas the same way.” Minah giggled uncontrollably, her hands clasped tightly over .

“Why did you let him do that in the first place? He’s your boyfriend.” You laughed in response.

“I have no idea. It was hilarious though!” As you continued to talk, fans began filing into the stadium and taking their seats.

“Uh-oh! You need to hurry to the front!” You sighed, looking at the crowd already clustering behind the guardrails in front of the stage.

“That’s alright, I don’t mind watching a little farther behind. Let’s face it, I can watch them anytime, but these fans can’t.” Minah shoved you in the stage’s direction, rushing you forward so quickly you nearly stumbled over your feet. “Seriously! It’s okay!” She shook her head fervently  and grabbed your wrist, dragging you as fast as she could.

“No! You need to be in the front or he’s going to kill me!” You stopped following her, cocking your head to the side.

“What?” She shook her head.

“Never mind. Just follow me!” Pushing gently through the crowd she led you to the guardrails. She tapped the security guard Jihoon lightly on the shoulder, offering a blinding smile and waving goodbye. “I’ll see you after the concert. Good luck!”

“Good…luck?” You were confused, but shook the thoughts from your mind as Jihoon helped you through the gate.

“You can stand in front of the rails, it’s safer that way.” You smiled politely, finding a comfortable position in front of the stage.

“Honestly, I think it would have been easier on my neck to just stand further back,” you mused quietly, mumbling under your breath. Jihoon smiled to himself, but you were too distracted by the cheers of fans to take notice. A few behind you complained that you got to stand in front, but quickly recognized you as the girlfriend of one of the group members. At first it had been rough when the relationship was revealed, but most fans were quick to accept you.

Excited screams pounded at your eardrums as the boys appeared on stage, lights and fog creating an atmosphere of wild anticipation. Their song began, and you found yourself entranced by the powerful vocals and incredible dancing. After a long set of the group’s favorite songs, the stage grew quiet and calm.

The blue lights were cool and welcoming, and you smiled as your boyfriend walked onstage with a stylish white stool in his arms. He set down the stool, smiling nervously as he his microphone.

“This song is really special. It’s new, something I wrote myself. But first, I need to ask someone to come up here.” Your cheeks blushed red as you connected his words in your brain. The fans screamed excitedly as he walked to the stage’s edge, extending a strong hand to you. Placing your hand in his, you walked carefully up the steps with your eyes on the floor, too nervous in front of the fans to look up. Your discomfort began to shed as a group of fans chanted the pairing name they gave to the both of you, and your boyfriend stopped biting at his lip to grin happily.

“You can sit here,” he said, gesturing to the stool. “So, how are you doing?” he asked with a laugh. You blinked, looking at the microphone he was holding in front of your lips.

“Um. I’m good. Confused.” The fans laughed, and your boyfriend took a deep breath.

“Everyone, I need to ask her a very important question. Will you guys help me?” The fans cheered, flashing lightsticks and balloons happily in the air. He turned back to you.

“I love you so much, you know that. You mean the world to me. I couldn’t ask for somebody more supportive and wonderful to spend the rest of my life with. Will you marry me?” As the last four words left his lips, he kneeled down on the stage in front of you. From the pocket of his jacket he pulled out a small box, opening it to reveal a ring. The diamond sparkled with the stage’s lights, glittering as bright as the smile in his face. “Well?” You laughed, tears welling in the corner of your eyes.

“Of course I will!” As he slipped the ring onto your finger, the stadium erupted in an explosion of cheering. You stood up to give your boyfriend a suffocating hug. He wiped his own eyes before bringing his sleeve to yours.

“Are you ready for the song?” You nodded, sitting back down in the stool behind you. As the music began, he took your hand tightly in his, the ring casting glittery shimmers on both of your faces. Through his handwritten lyrics, he expressed to you love, delight, and the anticipation of your future together.

Backstage after the concert, your mind remained a flood of happiness and elation. Your boyfriend ran to you with a towel in his hands, too excited to wipe the sweat from his brow. He held you in a tight hug, spinning you in a circle amidst the crowd of employees.

“I can’t believe we’re getting married!” you said with a smile. “I can’t wait!” He grinned, kissing you breathlessly.

“Me either. I love you so much.” As you left the stadium together, the starry sky twinkled brightly over the buildings. He took your hand, holding it up to the inky heavens.

“They’re like diamonds,” he marveled. He tapped the ring. “A star for you, because you’re my star.” You laughed, wrapping your fingers tightly around his.

“So cheesy.” Leaning your head on his shoulder, another chuckle escaped your throat. “And I love it.”
