He placed the mug carefully in front of you before setting down his own next to the delicate shortcake.

“I put cream in yours. That’s how you wanted it right?” You nodded in appreciation while lifting the mug to your lips, taking a sip of the steaming coffee. Your eyes closed slightly, while boyfriend smiled and drank his own. A peaceful silence fell between you two, your smiles providing all the conversation necessary.

Across the café, a dark-haired girl was glaring at you with an icy stare. Uneasiness slithered down your spine even as you drank another taste of coffee.  Your boyfriend wasn’t faced in her direction, but you considered the possibility that she recognized him as a celebrity. It was rare, but at times he was found by fans even in the most remote of locations. He detected your nervousness quickly, bringing a hand to your knee.

“Are you alright?” You nodded, eyes still focused on the staring girl.

“It’s just…that girl over there keeps staring at us.” He turned his head, but quickly turned back around and rested his face on the table.

“That’s my ex,” he mumbled, voice muffled by the wooden tabletop. “Why is she even here?” You couldn’t help but chuckle lightly at his defeated state. He sat up, annoyance reflected in his eyes. “I’ll talk to her though. Don’t worry.” You nodded, smiling in encouragement when he patted you on the hand.

You weren’t jealous he was going to offer attention to her. It wasn’t your business, and you focused your attention back on the warm drink in front of you. He approached her with irritation, pulling out the adjacent seat and sitting down.

“What’s your problem?” he asked, clearly annoyed. She blinked her eyes lightly.

“What do you mean?” He rolled his eyes in exasperation.

“Can’t you just drink your coffee and stop shooting dirty looks at my girlfriend?” She giggled, tracing the rim of her mug with her index finger.

“I’m sorry! I was just trying to remember why you broke up with me. I miss you!” His eyes shrunk in anger and frustration, and he lifted his fingers to his temples.

“Need I remind you that it was you who broke up with me? I have a girlfriend, and even if I didn’t, I’m the exact same guy you broke up with. I’m not going to date someone who doesn’t accept my personality.” He pointed in your direction. “She accepts me. You didn’t.” He stood to leave, his palms resting angrily on her table. “I know you’re only interested in my fame. Leave me and my girlfriend alone, okay?” She grew angry, raising her voice slightly to dispute his criticism. He turned around, refusing a second glance in her direction. “Save it. Have a nice day.”

Before he sat down, your boyfriend leaned forward to kiss gently. His hands cradled your cheeks, fingers brushing against your ears. You raised your eyebrows and he smiled.

“Don’t worry about it. She won’t bother us anymore.” He paused. “You haven’t had any cake yet?” Laughing, he lowered a fork into the slice, holding his hand underneath the piece. “Try it!” You opened your mouth and he gave you the bite, laughing when you struggled to the frosting from your lip.

Both of you forgot about the encounter with his ex-girlfriend, enjoying the rest of the cake and date.
