[Male Perspective] When You're Nervous About Planning a One-Year Anniversary

Optional Bias Scenarios

A/N: This request asked that I write the scenario from the male's perspective. If having a girlfriend doesn't apply to you, I hope you can still enjoy it? (n_n) I loved writing this though~ People who this fits, who did you imagine? I know who I pictured as the girl!!

“We don’t seem to have any openings for reservations that day. I’m really sorry. Would you like to reserve a table for the day after?” You sighed into the phone, shaking your head even though the concierge couldn’t see.

“No, thanks anyway.” With a click you ended the call, sitting back onto the couch with a dejected sigh. You had hoped to surprise your girlfriend with dinner at her favorite restaurant, but hadn’t been able to snatch one of the elusive reservations. Your one year anniversary was a few days away, and it had begun to feel as though every plan you had was compromised in some way.

Earlier you had walked into a jewelry store with a glazed bewilderment in your eyes. Everything sparkled and glimmered as you passed by the display cases. Leaning close to the glass, you sighed loudly. Expensive prices shouted at you beneath every gorgeous piece. You approached the counter with hesitation, catching the attention of the woman working at the time.

“Can I help you find anything?” You glanced around the store, making sure it was you to whom she was speaking.

“Um, I think so. I want something for my girlfriend. For our anniversary?” She seemed to understand the situation, recognizing quickly the difficulty of your financial capabilities.

“You might be interested in this,” she said, bringing a small display box in front of you. Small silver hearts the size of your thumbnail hung individually on thin chains. “They can be engraved,” she explained, turning one over to reveal a name inscribed on the back. “And they aren’t very expensive either.”

You lifted the tiny pendent into your palm, staring at it quietly. It certainly wouldn’t be impressive. The gifts she received from fans were almost outlandish at time, the cost certainly exceeding your entire paycheck. On the other hand, this would be something personal, something she could wear every day without raising suspicion from the public. You decided it was your best option, and purchased the pendant with little hesitation. On the back you had the date of your anniversary engraved, the numbers etched elegantly into the silver with a delicate script.

Even still, you worried about the gift’s simplicity. It could hardly stand up to the elaborate designer jewels she wore in print ads, and was no doubt a mere fraction of the cost. You returned the necklace carefully to its box. It was the best you could give.

The date arrived quickly, and you stood in front of the mirror with worry etched in your features. Dinner reservations had been made at a different restaurant, slightly less elegant than your first choice had been. You fidgeted with your collar, loosening the crimson tie around your neck.

Before picking her up you stopped at a florist, gazing with admiration at the elaborate arrangements lining the walls. You selected a modest dozen of her favorites, watching quietly as the florist wrapped them handsomely in white tulle. They weren’t as extravagant as the flowers she received from fans, nor as elegant as those given away at music shows.

You had barely a moment to knock on the door of her dorm before she opened it, a wide smile gracing her striking features. For a moment you stared, admiring the softness of her hair, her smooth skin draped elegantly with a simple and sophisticated dress.

“You look gorgeous.” She seemed to brighten under your compliment, accepting the flowers you had extended in her direction. She beamed.

“You got my favorites! You’re the best.” Leaning close, she planted a light kiss on your cheek before disappearing to put the bouquet in water.

When she returned you walked together to the car, some of your nervousness already beginning to fade. Although the restaurant hadn’t been the first on your list of choices, you were pleased by the quiet and personal atmosphere. You were the only two in your section of the dining area, your table lit tastefully by a wine red candle.

Your anxiety has almost completely dispersed, eased away by her radiant happiness. She smiled as she spoke, her eyes turned up in a genuine smile. When you joked her laughs echoed in the room, and you were pleased to note how comfortable she felt in the environment. At times in your relationship, she was tense and anxious, pulled to the edge by her public lifestyle.

You grinned widely as she cracked a ridiculous joke. This was the girl you had fallen in love with.

As dinner neared its close, your pocket felt heavy under the weight of the gift. You shifted it to your lap, discreetly taking the tiny chain from its box.

“This is for you,” you said, placing your hand over hers. “I know it isn’t the fanciest or the most amazing or anything but I really hope it’s okay. I didn’t know if…” She interrupted your rambling with a surprised breath, cupping the necklace in her palms.

“It’s so pretty!” she said, turning it over to examine the back. Your girlfriend recognized the inscription instantly, and the gratitude washed sincerely in her eyes. “You didn’t have to get me anything! Especially something this lovely.” You smiled, breathing out the air you hadn’t realized you were holding in.

“Do you like it?” She rolled her eyes, pulling back her hair to have you put it around her neck.

“I love it! It’s perfect.” You smiled, closing the shiny clasp and kissing the back of her neck.

“I’m really glad you do.” Her eyes sparkled, and she reached forward to grab your hand. As you left the restaurant, your girlfriend continued to look down, admiring the silver heart dangling directly over the one beating beneath her ribs. You opened her door of the car before walking around, climbing into the driver’s seat with less grace than you had hoped. She chuckled at your awkward movements, leaning back in her seat with a relaxed ambience.

“You know,” she said, looking out the windshield in the same direction as you. “I really love you.” Both of you had exchanged these words countlessly, yet this time stood out in particular. She said it so casually, as though it were a fact she had known her whole life. You turned your head to smile at her impeccable grin, reaching a hand forward to grab hers.

“I love you too.”
