*The Singing Competition

Adventures of Bangtan toddlers

So this is to celebrate Jungkookie's birthday! Our maknae is what? 19 (International age)/20 (Korean/Chinese age)?

This is also a response to haninur32's request: A singing competition! It's based off Kookie on King of Masked Singer but I deviated a little from the actual format (i.e. they perform their solo song right after their duet and the audience doesn't get a chance to vote) this is so that Jungkook wins for his birthday haha

Quick Question: Have you participated in an arts competition before (can be singing, dance, rap (that's really cool) or a musical instrument)? How did it go?

I'd like to say a big THANK YOU to all my readers! Not to say that this fic is ending soon (it'll end when Jungkook reaches seven years old he's only four this year!!) sorry it's a little late!

Enjoy!

"Hyung are we there yet? Hyung are we there yet?"

Yoongi grumbles a little as he mutters a "No" and saves Seokjin the pain of Taehyung's endless questioning. The six of them are seated comfortably in Bang PD's car, and they're heading all the way over to where Jungkookie is going to perform tonight. Not really perform. It was more of a competition. Okay, it was a formal, informal concert where there is a remake of The Masked Singer (some popular show about singers dressed up in weird costumes and singing, according to Yoongi) and Jungkook was really keen (eager was more like it).

"There we go," Hobeom parks the car in the nearby parking space and the six of them walk over to the theatre, where the competition is supposed to be held. While inside, they see many parents waiting around, some a little impatient, while some are just reading through some magazines or tabloids that they put in the waiting area.

"Whereskookiewhereskookiewher--" Jimin is shushed by a seething Yoongi as the latter plops himself down on a seat and ignores Jimin when Jimin shuffles over to apologize. Seokjin has to break it up by using the old 'No music when we get back, Yoongi, if you don't apologize, and no cookies when we get back, Jimin'.

Well, there's that, and Hobeom assures them that they won't see Jungkook until the actual performance. Bang PD has somewhere else to be, so he can't attend.

"But I wanted to give this to him," Jimin holds out the present, which looks like some cheap amulet that can be bought at any souvenir shop. "It's supposed to be a good luck charm."

"We'll see him later, Jimin-ah," Hoseok bounds over, trying to cheer up his dongsaeng. "Come on! Let's go get popcorn!"

"Popcorn?" Namjoon pops up from his seat on the couch beside Yoongi with that giant book of his (something about the vocal chords or something or other) and he follows Hoseok and Jimin to go get popcorn. Well, Taehyung heard about it and he follows them.

"They don't have money, do they?" Seokjin looks down at Yoongi who's just staring at the four of them heading off.

"Ah!" Seokjin runs after them and when he gets there, there's already three big boxes of popcorn on the counter, waiting to be paid for. Seokjin huffs and puffs (this is why he's going to fail Phys. Ed) as he pays for the four of them.

"Ah, hyung! Thanks!" Taehyung takes his popcorn. "Since hyung's here...can we have four cups of Coca Cola?"

Seokjin nearly faints.

*************************************************************

Jimin is nestled between Yoongi and Hoseok with his big box of popcorn shared between him and Taehyung. Yoongi is sharing with Hoseok and Seokjin has one box for himself. Namjoon is crunching on the popcorn and slurping his Coke, occassionally reaching his hand into his box and stuffing it into his mouth.

The stage is lit, and the curtains are drawn. It's time for the show to start. Yoongi wishes the excited chatters of the parents of the competing kids will die down. There's no need for anymore competition. Jungkookie's going to win. There's no question about it.

The first pair of kids come up, dressed in relatively well-done costumes--mascots of the Olympics, one who looks like a bear (?) and one that looks like a tiger.

"Let's welcome our first two competitors, Hodori and Vinicius on stage!" the emcee announces, and Yoongi looks over at the panel of judges. They look pretty scary and intimidating with those pieces of paper they're pressing into the table with those meaty fingers of theirs.

"Hodori was the 1988 mascot of Olympics, and Vinicius is this year's mascot of the Rio Olympics. Let's start off with the duet song!"

In this competition, it follows the same format as King of Masked Singer, in which that two participants will compete against each other in a duet song round, before they'd be judged in a solo song round. Yoongi has heard Jungkook practicing in his room along with Jimin and Taehyung and sometimes Seokjin, and he has to admit, if Jungkook is one of them, he'd know and that Jungkook would definitely beat the other guy to the ground.

However, when the two contestants start singing, Yoongi can immediately tell that neither are Jungkook. How? Brotherly connection, he feels.

When the two are done singing both the duet and the solo song round and when the judges have judged, they call out the next two contestants to continue the competition. The winners of each pair will be announced at the end. Yoongi yawns as he reaches his hand into the popcorn box only to find that there's no popcorn left. Those brats must have eaten it all.

"Where's Kookie?" Yoongi feels a prod on his arm and he looks down to find Jimin staring at him earnestly. Jungkook is...nowhere to be seen or heard at the moment. Jungkook has yet to appear, even with these two contestants (one is a girl). When both contestants are dismissed, the third pair is called out.

Jimin looks from the boy dressed in the Fencing suit to the girl dressed with a target board on her mask and he immediately points at the Fencing Boy. "That's Kookie," he whispers to Taehyung, and Yoongi is genuinely surprised at Jimin's ability to tell Jeon Jungkook from other people, and considering that Jungkook hasn't even opened his mouth yet.

Yoongi watches as the two of them walk up to the center of the stage. Jungkook, if it really is him, looks absolutely ridiculous in that Fencing mask, or at least Yoongi thinks so. But he's still their Kookie.

Both of them start to sing, and Yoongi can tell most of the audience are impressed by both their little voices. The other contestant looks older than Jungkook. Just a little older, though. Maybe this is something called the Junior Category or something.

Jimin watches in earnest as the two contestants sing the duet song--a song called I'm In Love. Kookie is finally showing off his singing skills! And he remembers sneaking Kookie out without Seokjin knowing to practice the song with the other contestant, whom Jungkook tells him not to tell anyone (and that includes you!).

He sways with the music as both let out the soulful voices they have.

Yoongi looks at the other people as they seem to be enjoying the music as much as they are. Yup, that boy there is obviously Jungkookie. He looks over at his brothers. Jimin obviously knows who the Fencing Boy is already, and Taehyung has probably figured it out too, but Namjoon is still wondering who that person is, judging from his scrunched-up face.

Hoseok also knows, but considering he has that expression on half the time, it's a little difficult to tell. Seokjin seems to know too, so that leaves only Namjoon in the dark.

After finishing the duet, both contestants are greeted by the emcees again, this time to perform their solo song.

Jungkook starts first with his song--If You by Big Bang. Yoongi nearly slaps his forehead. This Big Bang fanboy...He watches as Jungkook manages to bring out the emotion of the song, even his youthful voice. When the song finishes, Jungkook receives a standing ovation from the audience, people actually standing up to clap for him and all his brothers.

The Fencing Boy is obviously very happy at all the praise and applause he's getting as he takes a step backwards to let the other girl sing her piece.

Both of them are equally matched in their singing skill, Yoongi thinks, and Namjoon seems to think so too. She finishes her song and she does the same as Jungkook, stepping back to let the emcee come forward.

"Judges! Judge now! Who's voice do you want to hear more of?"

Yoongi watches the judges take out the pieces of paper and some electronic device in their hands, where they are possibly keying in the results. There are several beeps of the machines in the silence of the theatre. Both contestants are dismissed backstage and they call out the final round of contestants, DJ and Hurray Radio. Really? Yoongi yawns again. Anything that's not Kookie bores him. Hurray Radio? What kind of name is that?

So it's safe to conclude that Yoongi doesn't exactly pay attention to the match between the two, and it's only after the emcees finished speaking, and after the judging, that the contestants who did not make the cut are allowed to sing their solo piece once more. After which is the announcing of the places already.

"Hodori! Take off your mask and let us see who you are!"

The young boy who is on stage dressed in the Hodori mask reveals his identity. It's not someone Yoongi knows, but he seems pretty familiar. Nevertheless, the other contestants reveal their identity.

"Fencing Boy! Take off your mask and let us see who you are!"

The audience cheers just as loudly for Fencing Boy as he takes off his mask, and indeed, he is Jungkook, thier beloved maknae! Jungkook literally glows as the audience claps and cheers, and Yoongi smirks at the realization on Namjoon's face as he stares slack-jawed.

Jungkook bows a few times before he steps backwards, letting the winner of that final round show his identity, and he also receives much applause from the audience. The clapping doesn't die down until their scores are shown, and Yoongi is pretty impressed at Jungkook's score. He would have lost to Hurray Radio had they competed, but in their eyes, Jungkook did the best he can do.

After the competition has ended, the boys are ushered out of the theatre and they are immediately greeted by Jungkook still dressed in his Fencing outfit. Jimin and Taehyung nearly crash Jungkook into the ground, the three of them looking like little puppies wagging their tail as they hug Jungkook tightly.

"You're one of the Kings of Masked Singer now!" Hoseok screeches as he joins the pile on the ground.

"It's not really Masked Singer..." Yoongi starts, but Namjoon's excited screaming leads him to stop in his tracks and he watches as Namjoon throws himself on top of Hoseok.

Meanwhile, Jungkook hacks and coughs as he gets up from the ground, from having the weight of four boys trapped on him. Suddenly, he sees Seokjin walking over to all of them speedily, something in his hands.

"Jungkook-ah, have you forgotten what day it is?"

"Huh?" Jungkook gives him a confused look. "It's Thursday, hyung. It's a...school day?" He tilts his head in confusion as Seokjin laughs.

"Congratulations on your win, Kookie! It's your fourth birthday!"

Jungkook stares wide-eyed as Seokjin hands him the box containing his cake, and Jungkook squeals when he realizes its a bunny-shaped cake, with white icing all over. Jimin also hands him his present, which he has combined his savings with Taehyung to buy.

"Happy Birthday, Kookie-yah!" Hoseok presents his present as well, a video that he's made with Yoongi--a compilation of Jungkook's crazy moments captured on camera. Namjoon presents Jungkook with a book on singing, and Jungkook gives a shaky 'thank you' because those books are 'big boy books' and Jungkook doesn't think he can start reading them just yet.

"Anyways, congratulations Kookie for winning King of Masked Singer on your birthday!"

Jungkook already has his face full of cream while screaming "Yeah!" and he pumps his fist into the air, causing a bit of cream to fly everywhere. Everyone laughs as they head back to the car with Jimin carrying the cake and Jungkook celebrating his win.

****************************************************

The next day, Jungkook arrives at his preschool and finds a plaque specially dedicated to him (after Taehyung points it out of course, he likes shiny stuff and he stares at the shelves of plaques and trophies every morning). He looks at it, grinning as he sees his name right there, along with previous winners of King of Masked Singer, Junior Ver. He walks with a spring in his step to the classroom when suddenly...

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" everyone screams as he and Taehyung walks into class.

He is greeted with a hug from Sanghyuk, one of his best friends and Yugyeom from the Got7 family. Presents are everywhere and there's another giant cake on the table. The classroom is decorated for a party, and even the teacher announces that the morning would be used for partying.

And so, Jungkook celebrates his belated birthday with his friends, and was even praised for his win on King of Masked Singer, in which Jungkook beams proudly as his friends clap and cheer.

This has got to be one of the best birthdays ever.

Chapter 38: Ah, so cute! I really enjoy your stories, ty!
I cook for a living, but since I grew up with western dishes and that's what my current clientele prefer I am proudest of my soondubu jjigae which my family have been the taste testers for. However, at work, my coworkers favourite is my macaroni and cheese while the clients prefer the sweet and sour pork.
Watching RapMon chopping an onion was truly entertaining!
