He used to be so happy and so full of life, he had what he wanted and he wouldn’t ask for more. But that was all in the past, precisely seven years ago when she left him. That was when everything went south for him. Kris Wu Yifan, the man who lost everything when he lost her in a virus outbreak that resulted in an undead apocalypse.

‘Hey (F/N)!’ Kris caught up with her. ‘Oh hey, giraffe! Aren’t you supposed to be having your classes right now?’ ‘Nah, the professor’s absent so I got time to kill. So where to, milady?’ He bowed like people in medieval times used to do and this made her laugh. ‘Whoa, not so fast! You better get your in gear if you wanna pass your upcoming exam for food engineering. Don’t wanna see your name on ‘The List’ now, do we?’ She smirked as he groaned in protest.

‘Alright fine, can you at least tutor me in the café? It’s boring to do it the library.’ He gave in to her and she nodded. ‘I’ll see you in the afternoon then.’ She waved at him and he did the same as he watched her walking down the corridor to her next class.

Kris had known her all his life, she was his best friend since they were babies and they played together a lot as children. As they grew up and went to high school, she became more tomboyish and sporty since she loves sports, she wasn’t exactly the prettiest in the whole school but she was perfect in his eyes the moment he laid eyes on her. To him, it felt wrong to love your own best friend so he decided that he would wait until the right time comes.

But it never came.

Shortly after she was done talking to him, she was crushed by a wall that came flying from her left. The blast created chaos and a huge torrent of papers and other debris fell down, everyone panicked and escaped from the campus. While everyone fled, Kris made his way to her, she was barely holding on and the chunk of wall was squeezing the very life out of her.

Her hair fanned out from under her and blood smeared her face, flowing out of her. ‘K-Kris…’ She could barely manage a whisper as every tiny movement caused her pain. ‘G-Get out… Save… Yourself…’ Hearing this, tears unknowingly flowed down his face as he knelt down and held her bleeding hand, refusing to leave her.

‘I won’t leave you! We made a promise to be together forever didn’t we?! I’ll get help so don’t you die!’ ‘I won’t make it… I-It’s already… Too late for me… But… It’s… still not too l-late… For you…’ That bleeding hand of hers caressed his cheek one last time and it fell down. Her smile was the last thing he saw before he was yanked away, kicking and screaming like a madman.

Even until her death, he couldn’t even say the words he had wanted to her as he sat in the bus, transported far away from the campus. The agony he felt when he was torn away from her, no matter what, he could never turn away from her.

He and his friends got off in a place that looked like an army base and true enough, he saw military staff walking about. Kris tuned out all the announcement they were making as his mind drifted towards you, he regretted for not building up the courage to express how he felt and his heart was broken into trillions of pieces.

She was so selfless even on the verge of death, she told him to escape when she knew she wouldn’t last any longer. She tried to keep her movements to a minimum so that it wouldn’t hurt as much. Her vision faded in and out as black spots decorated her field of sight, she vaguely saw a man in a black trench coat looming over her, she couldn’t hear what he was saying but he held out a hand to her, asking if she wanted to live or die.

If this was truly her fate, she’d gladly accept it and die as she should. Nonetheless, the man grabbed her hand and she felt something entering her bloodstream before her vision was replaced by darkness.

For months he trained in that base, the only thing that kept him going was his promise to you. He trained himself to be perfect in all aspects, be it firearms, hand-to-hand combat or medic, he did it all for her so that no one else would suffer a fate like hers. Eventually, he was posted to a research company that was rumoured to be creating biochemical weapons after two years of training.

Kris went in without any hint of fear on his face, he boldly strode into the empty premises and analysed his surroundings. Only haphazardly strewn debris could be found on the office level but he suspected the juicy details were going on in the subterranean area where the weapons were manufactured.

Like what was reported, the dead were reanimated with parasites that infected their brains and had acquired a new craving for the blood and flesh of the living. Kris knew he wouldn’t stand a chance with him against hundreds of them so he proceeded to crawl through the vents after distracting them with a noise maker.

It was dusty and cramped as he crawled through, to make it even worse, it was infested with slimy nests of what he assumed was another breed of parasites to guard the entrance. Using his dagger, he slashed whatever was crawling and moving, making his way further down into the laboratories that seemed to go on forever.

What awaited him down there broke his heart.

‘(F-F/N)…?’ He croaked out her name, tears threatening to fall as he took in her features. She was still beautiful as the day when he left her but she looked pale and thinner than before. The girl he loved no longer stood before him as the one he loved but an enemy that would have his head if he wasn’t careful.
