"Yeah. You're right. I shouldn't be worried then."
Stupid You,
Seunghyun's POV:
"... So? Do you believe me?" Donghae asks after a long pause. His story lingers in my mind. Do I believe him? I don't know... If it's true, it means my father is... No. I don't know.
"Doesn't matter if I believe you or not. Only you know if it's the truth or not." I answer, thinking of the possibilities of truth in his story.
There's no response.
I look over to him. His head is resting on Gaheun's, faces close together. He looks really sad, staring at her. I instantly forget about the small burning jealousy that was eating at me throughout the night.
"Do you regret coming here?" I ask. I'm really curious, he doesn't look glad at all.
"No. Not a bit." He answers, really gently, almost whispering. "I'm actually glad I got to see her again. Thank you," Is he actually that thankful? His face says otherwise...
"Ahem..." I clear my throat.
"Will you be honest with me?" He asks, using the same tone as before.
"Sure," I answer, not thinking much into it.
"... You... Like Gaheun. Don't you?" I freeze. I wasn’t prepared for this question.
"What makes you think that?" I ask, neither agreeing nor disagreeing, hoping to switch the topic.
"Just a feeling. But I'm right. I can tell, since you haven't answered me." He says, matter-of-factly, not seeming affected by his discovery.
"I-"
"That's why I don't like you." He interrupts, then lets out an airy laugh. "When I die, I don't want her to be with someone like you, she needs someone better than you."
"And you're so good?" I reply harshly, not hiding the fact that I’m offended. Maybe that’s why my comeback sounded so lame.
"... I haven't done any wrong. And remember what you said; only I know if I'm telling the truth." damn, he used my words against me.
“But… I think she can find someone better than me too. It’s just that… She likes to be around me, so I’m not going to push her away.” He adds thoughtfully, as he started to gently push her hair away from her face. The slight burning in my chest came back again, damn. But at least I know for sure he really cares about her… I don’t feel as degraded, I guess.
"She doesn't like me anyways. She never will." I answer, I heard how defeated I sounded only after the words left my mouth.
"Oh?" Is all he says.
"It's me who's taking you away from her, isn't it? She'll hate me."
A silence follows my statement.
"Yeah. You're right. I shouldn't be worried then." He says, sounding all relieved.
"About what?" I ask after chuckling quietly at his tone.
"Losing to you." This makes me smile. He doesn't seem like the jealous type.
He lets out a muffled laugh.
"Even if she hates you, will you promise to take care of her for me? If nobody else can?" Even if he didn't ask, I would have tried to anyways, now that I think about it. “Don’t worry; you’re my LAST resort, if everyone else fails…” I laugh, but you can tell he was being serious under his light tone.
"Yeah. But not for you, for her."
He laughs a little again.
"Just the answer I was expecting..." I smile at his response.
Third Person's POV:
The rest of the night was in silence, not an awkward one, but one of contentment. Although Seunghyun had feelings for Gaheun, he finally realized his place: he could never replace Donghae, he would always have a place in her heart. Irreplaceable. Sacred. In Seunghyun’s mind, he knew how it felt; even though he likes Gaheun, he can’t seem to put Minkyung away. So even though the girl he liked was being embraced by another man, he was okay. It's how it's meant to be, you're in no place to interfere, Seunghyun told himself a couple of times. But it didn't mean he was going to push his feelings away, he could still be someone to Gaheun, although he can’t replace Donghae, he could have his own place in her heart, right?
Donghae kept his grasp on Gaheun; barely blinking, absorbing every second he had left with her. He sighed, and kissed her gently on her lips, careful not to wake her up. He smiled, knowing that although he wouldn't be able to spend the rest of his life with her, they truly loved each other. And no matter what happened, nobody could take that away from them. With that thought, he slowly drifted off into sleep.
Sleep, Gaheun, you're sleeping. She didn't move since the moment she heard Donghae's voice. Quite frankly, she wasn't even paying attention to a word they were saying, and when she was listening to what they were saying, she tried hard not to react. She just didn't want Donghae to leave. Ever. She didn't know how long she was awake for, and didn't know when she fell asleep, but those details were meaningless to her; the only thing that mattered was that he was there with her.
