Chapter 52- A Method to the Madness

Finding the Right Words

Min Hee and I geeked out together for about an hour, after I told her. She was happy because I would finally be taking acting lessons. I was happy because I would be able to go to the Super Junior dorm almost every day. We were both happy because I had a steady job, which meant having money.

"Now I just have to get a job, so i don't feel like a freeloader. Which is what I've been most of this time, anyway," Min Hee concluded, falling back onto the floor and looking up at the ceiling.

"You haven't been a freeloader. You've been paying me back by helping me with trainee stuff. I don't think I'd be able to keep up in dance class if it weren't for you, and you've helped me a lot with my vocal training. And what have I been helping you with?"

"Teaching me how to have an expression on my face?"

"And look how well I've been doing at that!"

I saw her eyes darken. "Oh no, Min Hee, I didn't mean it like that! You've been getting better, really!"

"Yeah, thanks."

She didn't talk to me the rest of the night. Way to go, genius.

I walked into the auditorium, where the acting class took place, looking around. It didn't look very complicated, and there wasn't any stage pieces or anything. The rest of the students were sitting in the auditorium seats, looking apprehensive. I heard a few of them whisper as I walked by, finding a seat.

"Oh look, it's the new girl."

"Yeah, she's Super Junior's pet."

"The American girl? Seriously?"

"They call her Queen Be. Apparently she wants to be a songwriter."

"Then why is she even bothering with classes?"

"I don't know. She's a troublemaker, though. I heard she even screamed at one of the directors because he was scolding Super Junior-M's Zhou Mi for making a mistake."

"Chincha?! And they kept her in the company?! Wow, she's got issues. I can't believe she got away with that!"

"Well, it doesn't matter. She hasn't been in this class as long as we have. She'll definitely be way behind. She'll have to quit soon enough."

I sat down right next to the gossiping girls, flashing them a smile. Oh, that's what you think, I thought. I think I'll stay in this class for quite a while. And I didn't yell at the director because he was scolding Zhou Mi. I got mad because he was harassing Zhou Mi

A man in loose, comfortable clothes came out from behind the curtain. "Good morning everyone. Ah, and Choi Minsung! You're here on time. Everyone, this is your new classmate, Choi Minsung."

I waved, bowing my head to my classmates, and the teacher.

"I hope you'll all make her feel welcome", he added. Yes, they'd been doing a wonderful job of that. Some of them I recognized from my dance class, and one was Lee Soo Yun, the girl that had won at the vocal exhibition. Maybe it's cruel, but I just got this horrible feeling of not liking for her. She struck me as a bit self-absorbed. Sure, she was talented, but she seemed to wallow in it. Not like Min Hee, who was ridiculously talented, but always seemed to downplay it for some reason.

"Okay, so we'll start with some projection activities. Half of you go to the back of the auditorium, the other half, join me onstage."

Oh I knew this activity! We used to do it all the time before play practice. It was a good warm up.

I heard more whispers as i proudly climbed the steps up to the stage, standing in line. The teacher decided that this was a good way to introduce themselves, to get me acquainted with everyone, so everyone shouted their introductions.

Some people had to yell it two or three times before the other side understood them clearly, and some people shouted it perfectly loud and clear enough, but it was a little bit too loud. It was a bit obnoxious.

When it came to be my turn, I stepped up to the front of the stage and took a deep breath. Making sure the audience heard you wasn't about yelling. It was about making your voice heard. There was a difference, and I had a natural ability to make my voice heard, whether or not I wanted it to be.

"Hello, My name is Melissa, but in Korea I've been given the name Choi Minsung. I'm from Wisconsin, USA, and I've been a trainee at SM for seven months. I haven't been taking this class from the beginning, because I've been taking Korean classes. I do my best at everything SM gives me, and I hope that you'll all respect me as I think you'd all want me to respect you."

I waited for any of them to dare to say they hadn't heard me, or that I hadn't understood. No one did. I stepped back in line, happy to have made my point.

The most difficult part of being SuJu's housekeeper was the initial cleaning. For the first few weeks, I would finish acting class, then go straight to the SuJu dorm, and spend twelve hours scrubbing floors, re-organizing kitchen shelves, straightening up rooms, stripping beds of their sheets and blankets, putting clean sheets on the beds, washing the dirty, smelly ones, putting them neatly back into closets, and making the beds into nice, clean-looking things with fresh, lavender-scented blankets.

"Oppa, when was the last time these windows were washed?!" I remarked, looking at the floor-to-ceiling windows in Kangin/Leeteuk's room. "It's a wonder you can see anything through them!"

Kangin, playing on a Nintendo DS on his bed, shrugged. "Not while I've been here. So about a year?"

I sighed, and, armed with window cleaner and a roll of paper towel, began to scrub.

After polishing the multiple trophies lining the window (VERY carefully, because I would feel terrible if I dropped one and broke it), I put them back into their nice order, and stepped back to look at my work. "Very good. Now for the next room..."

Stepping into the shower in the downstairs dorm's bathroom almost made me want to puke. Orange... stuff covered the floor of it, in a grimey layer. I'd seen it in my shower, but I'd always washed it off before it got this bad. I spent my entire twelve-hour period cleaning the shower. When I was leaving, I asked them why their previous Ahjumma never cleaned the shower.

"She did," Eunhyuk answered. "Every two weeks."

I felt my face pale. "So it got this bad, just in the two or three weeks that you haven't had a housekeeper?!"

He shrugged. "Sorry, Minsung."

I sighed. "Okay, okay. I'll keep cleaning it pretty often. The rest of the dorm should be pretty simple to maintain, now that I've cleaned it all. But please try not to make any big messes for me? Oh, and Oppa, I know your schedule is busy, and you're tired a lot, but please try to shower at least twice a week. It'll help your smell."

I reached down to pet Choco, who wasn't exactly the sweetest dog in the world, but he'd warmed up to me fairly quickly. Then I waved, and headed to find Manager Kim. He was apparently in charge of me, and he reported how well I did to SM, who then sent me my paychecks bi-weekly.

He signed off on my workbook, then patted me on the head and told me to keep doing a good job. To be honest, I was quite proud of my work with the dorm. In only a few weeks, through my own personal efforts, it had transformed into the picture of organization. Everything was scrubbed clean and polished (I had even re-varnished the living room floor, a long, annoying task, because people kept wanting to walk on it *cough cough* Kangin *cough cough*), and I had even found a method to the madness of Donghae's shoes. I took better care of their dorm than I did of my own. But then again, I was getting paid to take care of theirs.

After my time in the SuJu dorm, I would head to dance class, and tell Min Hee about the hard work I had gone through that day. She was generally more interested in what the members were doing while I was there, but most of the time I was working, there was actually no one home.

In vocal training class, Nakata-sensei often told me that I continued to improve. It seemed that she was starting to get used to the repeated intrusions, I guess, because whenever someone would come in, she would just stop saying anything and sit back in her desk and do paperwork.

And then it was back to my dorm, at which point I was usually thoroughly and pleasantly exhausted. Despite the hard work, my days were usually good. I spent lots of time fulfilling my desire to take care of the members, which included doing laundry every few days. I'd started to discreetly mark the tags of the clothes for different members, since I often screwed them up, and it was quite embarassing. Of course, sometimes certain articles of clothing were quite questionable, but I tried not to think about it (Not successfully, mind you), and washed them anyway.

I was more tired than ever, with so much work to do, but I was at least less irritable, now that I had a constant source of money with which to buy food. It wasn't much, but at least it meant two meals a day, albeit small, unremarkable ones. But who cared? I was eating again.

Of course, now that I was finally done with the initial clean-up, things started to get interesting.

Between both dorms, the other members were frequent visitors. Siwon, Shindong, and Heechul would pop in often enough to almost give the illusion that they lived in the dorms, although they didn't. For me, it meant more work.

Also, Henry would come and hang out, watching TV and making weird remarks, and sometimes I swear he made messes just so I had to clean them up. But then he said that he wanted me as his housekeeper. He shared a dorm in Korea with Zhou Mi, apparently, but since it was just the two of them, they didn't get a housekeeper.

I had to refuse, though, because the main SuJu dorm kept me on my toes enough.

People came in and out of the dorms all the time. I did my best to stay out of the way, and not interfere with the conversations. I was a good housekeeper ahjum-- Ah, Kangin, now you've got ME doing it!

But overall, I had fun working there. The members were relatively nice, sometimes including me when they decided to do weird stuff. I had to go on shopping runs a lot, to restock the kitchens, the money to do so given to me by Manager Kim, and often enough I'd get back just in time to see them passing out on the living room floor.

And then, one day, when Heechul was visiting...

"Ya, Minsung-ah! Since you're not doing anything right now, make us some dinner!"

He pulled my book away from my hands, getting really close to my face, enough to make me crawl backwards to get away from me.

"Dinner?!" I squeaked, trying to snatch my book back, but he only pulled it away.

"Dinner. You can cook, right?"

"Well, that's really dependent on who's eating it, but I don't think I'm a terrible cook..."

"Great! Then make us some dinner!"

"But I don't think that was in my job list..."

"What? The last ahjumma did it for us. Right guys?"

Much to my chagrin, Kangin and Donghae agreed with him.

I sighed, pushing my glasses further onto my nose. "Okay, okay, I'll try. But I don't know how to cook very many Korean dishes. Just western, Japanese and Chinese."

"Cook us something western! We never get American food!" Donghae called, eliminating my idea to just make stir fry.

I bit my lip. "Okay... but you can't say it's gross and not eat it, alright?"

"Sure, sure. Go ahead and use the kitchen!"

"Okay, okay, fine. But if I'm going to cook for you, I'll have to call the other members up here."

"I'll do it!" Before I could argue, Donghae had his shoes on and was out the door.

I turned to the remaining members. "Well, I'm going to hae to get grocery money from Manager Kim, and then go to my dorm and grab my cookbook, then go get supplies. So... I'll be back in about an hour or two, okay?" They agreed, Kangin actually grabbing his wallet and handing me several thousand won. He was paying for it himself?! Then I couldn't just say no...

Sigh. It didn't look like I was getting out of this. Well, I hope they liked what I made.

A few hours later I heard sounds of laughter and overall goofing-around while I was in the kitchen, chopping vegetables and stirring sauce. It seemed that Donghae had not only gone out to get the members on the lower floor, but also to get everyone else. Altogether, there were eleven members in the living room, doing God-knows-what, from the sounds I was hearing.

Finally, when the sauce was simmering, I stepped out of the kitchen to find out what was going on.

And burst out laughing. They were playing Twister. Of all games. And it looked sooooo wrong!

They were using two mats, so they could fit more members. Siwon, Kyuhyun and Sungmin were the spinner masters, seeming to enjoy taking their time doing the spinning, so they could hear the participants scream in pain. Oh wait, just Kyuhyun was the spinner. Sungmin was videotaping the whole thing, and I could hear his adorable, squeaky giggles from across the room, even though the loudest noises of all were the complaints coming from the center of the room.

"AHHH!!!! Kyuhyun, you ****, spin it, already!" I heard Kangin yell. He was twisted in an interesting fashion, his arm twisted through Heechul's legs, not to mention that Zhou Mi was literally on top of him, stretched over his back with his feet on one side, hands on the other. Kyuhyun, on the other hand, was sitting with the spinner in his lap, watching them with that evil grin on his face, and laughing.

I laughed until I was crying, falling back onto the wall, continuing to laugh.

"Don't just laugh, Mel! Go get the board from Kyuhyun!" Henry shouted, his arms shaking to support his weight while his legs were spread out, his in the air, facing me. I had this terrible urge to run up, whack it, and run away. Honestly, I don't know why they'd trusted Kyuhyun as the spinner in the first place.

Before I could do anything, though, Sungmin took the spinner and flicked it. "Left hand yellow!"

I heard a lot of groans, and saw them struggle to move their respective limbs. For Eunhyuk it was a blessing, allowing him to move his legs together. But for Kangin and Zhou Mi, it was torture. As Zhou Mi struggled to move his hand, he lost his footing, and his weight went down on Kangin, who tried to hold him for a moment before momentum sent him tumbling. Unfortunately, a lot of people were entangled with him, including Heechul, Donghae, and Shindong. The five of them collapsed in a heap of twisted limbs, and Kyuhyun and Sungmin laughed ridiculously hard while Siwon tried to help them all up.

Meanwhile, I was wiping laughter's tears from my eyes, my chest heaving from the laughs.

"Kangin, Shindong, Heechul, Donghae, and Zhou Mi, you're all out!"

"Ah, this little ****! Kyuhyun-ah, stop being so insolent! There's an ELF in the room! STOP TALKING INFORMALLY!" Kangin yelled, advancing towards Kyuhyun, who then hid behind Sungmin, still laughing, his hands in the air as if to ward off Kangin.

"What about you, Hyung? You shouldn't curse when there's an ELF around!" I heard Siwon chastise. Personally, I knew enough about Kyuhyun to know that he didn't ever call the other members "Hyung" if he could avoid it, and I knew enough about Kangin to know he had a bit of a potty mouth. I'd gotten past the caring point. To me, it was just hilarious chaos.

"No no, it's okay. Don't mind me; I'm just the cook. Please go on playing your game." Please, please go on, becase this is the funniest thing I've seen in my life.

"Ya, Ryeowook-ah, you can't move your hand! That's cheating!" I heard Sungmin yell.

"My back itches!"

Although the scene was immensely entertaining to watch, I had to rip my eyes away and go into the kitchen to continue working. I had sauce simmering. While I stirred it, I heard lovely sounds of pain and frustration, followed by a thump that must have been someone falling over.

"Henry, you're out!" yelled Kyuhyun, with a substantial amount of glee.

Ah, so the thump was Henry. I suppose, in the position I'd last seen him in, it was only a matter of time. I hope he didn't do the splits on accident. Because if he had, I'd missed it.

The sauce had a good ten minutes to go before it was done, so I went back out to see. The fallen members now sat in a ring around the playing field, several of them squeezing onto the couch, pushing Kyuhyun closer to Sungmin.

KyuMin, KyuMin, KyuMin, KyuMin, my mind chanted to me, and I felt a fangirl squeal rising in the back of my throat, so I ducked behind the wall and covered my mouth to muffle it, before peeking back into the other room.

"Ya, Minsung-ah! Stop playing hide-and-seek and tell us when dinner will be ready!"

Ack, Heenim saw me!

I came out from behind the kitchen wall as composed as I could manage, as if I hadn't been fangirling a few seconds ago. "It'll be about ten-twenty minutes. So you should probably be able to finish your game by... then..."

I looked down to see Eunhyuk in a position that would have been great for a B-boy dance, if he was moving. However, when one was frozen in it, it looked extremely uncomfortable.

Only he and Ryeowook were left. Actually, the game lasted the longest when it was at this point, because there was more room to maneuver, despite the fact that they'd taken away the second mat. I was a bit surprised that Wookie was left, but from what I'd seen, it seemed that it had been mostly out of luck.

I glanced over to Kyuhyun, wondering what the next move was going to be, only to see Sungmin lean over and whisper something in his ear, and then both of them laughed. KyuMin, KyuMin, KyuMin...

Kyuhyun spun the spinner, and then called "right foot red!" I saw what the trick was, and I was pretty sure everyone else saw it, too, but no one said anything. Right food red put both of them in horrible, twisted positions, where everywhere else would have helped them. Of course, that's not where it had actually landed. It had actually landed on left hand yellow. Tricky, nasty Kyuhyun. Wait, was that Sungmin's idea?!

Worse yet, I saw Heechul put his finger to his lips, and lean over towards Eunhyuk, whose right foot was near him, facing up because of the angle. Heechul had a pen in his hand, and reached out with it towards Eunhyuk's foot.

They were terrible people.

"GAH, my foot itches!!!!" Eunhyuk screamed, trying to kick out to alleviate some of the tickle, while Heechul just silently laughed.

And then Wookie tumbled.

I hadn't even been looking at him, because of concentrating on poor Eunhyuk, but he hit the ground, rolling off of the mat. Hearing this, Eunhyuk stood up and threw his arms in the air, then yelled like a madman, ran victory laps around the room,  and finally threw himself onto the couch, knocking the air out of the four members that were sitting there. His head was practically in Donghae's lap, I noticed.

But not for long, because Kyuhyun mercilessly pushed him off, and Eunhyuk hit the ground with a harsh thud.

"Okay, okay, Eunhyuk won," Heechul pouted. "Now it's time for dinner! Minsung-ah, bring us our food!"

"It's still cooking!"

"Food, food, food, food, food, food!" He chanted, the other members joining in, until I had a wall of hungry men chanting "food" at me.

"Okay, okay, stop! You're creeping me out! I'm going, I'm going!" I retreated into the kitchen, but as soon as I escaped their gazes, I collapsed into a fit of giggling, making it difficult to do anything. When I finally recovered, I checked the sauce. Good enough. "Okay, someone needs to set the table!" I called out, tasting my work. Hmmm... a bit longer.

"Kawi Bawi Bo!!!!" I heard yelled from various throats in the other room, and then anohter victory yell. "Kawi Bawi Bo! Ahhhh, Siwon and Kangin are safe!"

I rolled my eyes. "You guys, if you just did it together, you wouldn't have to do that!"

"But that's no fun!" I heard Heechul yell in response.

"GET IN HERE AND SET THE TABLE OR I'M HAVING KYUHYUN-OPPA HELP ME MAKE DINNER NEXT TIME!" I screamed, and suddenly there was a scrabble of feet, and a bunch of guys, shamefacedly, came in to grab plates, cups, and silverware.

Hehehehe knowing the members all too well has its perks.

"Oh, Eunhyuk-oppa, this is an American dish. Well, Italian, actually. You don't really eat it with chopsticks."

"Oh... but... we don't have forks..." He looked so adorable, I wanted to pinch his cheeks.

"Don't worry about it. I noticed that when I was reorganizing the kitchen. So I used a bit of the grocery money to buy this." I produced a box of simple metal forks from the bag behind me, holding them out to him. "Would you care to put these on the table, my Oppa?" He smiled, nodded, and took them out to the table.

"Kangin-oppa, can you grab that other pot, please? My hands are full with this one."

He shrugged and slid on a pair of oven mitts (Which looked hilarious, let me tell you), and grabbed the pot, hoisting it off the stove. "****, how much is IN here?!"

"I have to feed eleven people! Eleven hungry guys, for that matter! That means a lot of food!"

He looked at me around the pot. "But there's twelve of us here."

"Huh? No there's not..."

"Kangin, Heechul, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Sungmin, Ryeowook, Henry, Zhou Mi, Shindong, Siwon, Kyuhyun, and Minsung. That's twelve."

I backed up a bit. "Oh no, that's okay, I cooked this for you; I don't have to eat any..."

"Minsung, you're eating some of this. End of story. Besides, how do I know you didn't poison it or something, if you make us eat it and don't eat any of it yourself?"

He had a valid point. "Okay, okay. Let's just go to the table."

We set the pots down on the table, and, with a flourish, I removed the lids.

"Behold, Choi Minsung's family spaghetti recipe! It's been passed down through three generations at least, and still delicious. So dig in!"

I sat down between Henry and Kyuhyun, where a place was set for me. I guess everyone had the same mentality as Kangin. I had to show the guys how to serve themselves, and then I had to make an example of how to properly eat spaghetti with the fork. Of course, their favorite part was when I explained that it was perfectly acceptable to slurp up the noodles. They must not have hated it, because soon enough, I was surrounded by the slurping sounds, occasionally getting hit with sauce as the noodles disappeared into someone's mouth. I laughed, wiped it off, then grabbed a napkin and crumpled it into a ball to throw at the member at fault. Men, I tell you!
