Previous Chapter:
“Oppa? What are you doing here?”
“I decided I wanted to help out at the orphanage.”
“Chincharu?”
“Of course. Plus, maybe I can’t make a contribution there. It’d certainly help my public image.”
I stepped into the car as he walked around.
“Well, I hope you’re doing it for more than that.”
“I am. I like children afterall.”
“Of course. I remember you saying that.”
“And, I get to spend time with you.”
He smiled before reaching over to grasp my hand and squeeze it affectionately. I returned his smile and looked forward as he began driving toward the orphanage.
When we finally pulled up at the orphanage, I looked out the window before stepping out of the car. It looked quaint enough, at least as quaint as an orphanage can be. This was where children were left behind, but it was also a place where new lives began if a couple were willing to become parents.
Jin Ki stepped out of the car as well, and he met me on the sidewalk. He too, looked up at the orphanage, and grasping me my hand, we both walked into the entrance. There was a sort of a reception desk at the front, and I stepped forward to introduce myself.
“Annyeohasaeyo. Cho neun Kang Yun Hee imnida. I’m here to replace Ji Eun. She was suddenly busy today.”
“Ah, keu dae yo? Thank you so much for coming. The children were looking forward to a visitor, and I wouldn’t have any idea what to tell them if no one came. I’m Kim Jang Mi, but you can call me Eomonim.”
“Deh. I also brought a friend,” I said, gesturing to Jin Ki, who stepped up beside me.
“Annyeosaeyo. Cho neun Lee Jin Ki imnida.”
“Deh, Annyeohasaeyo. Thank you for coming.”
“It’s my pleasure.”
“If you two will follow me, the children are in the play room.”
She gestured down a hallway and then turned to walk toward the room. Jin Ki and I followed behind her silently, observing the interior of the building. It was very clean, something necessary in a house with many children. All along the walls, pictures and drawings were posted on the wall.
As we neared our destination, the sound of children grew louder. Letting out a quiet sigh, I prepared myself for what was to come. I haven’t had much contact with little children before, and I was hoping that I would be able to handle them, especially when they came in bunches.
“Something wrong jagiya?”
“Aniyo. I’m just hoping I’ll do okay with the children…”
“I’m sure you’ll do fine.”
“I’ll believe it when I see it.”
Looking forward again, we saw the caretaker open the door to the play room. When she did, she walked in and beckoned to us quickly.
“Kim eomonim!”
A little girl ran toward Eomonim and lept into her arms. She looked about five years old, and had her dark black hair tied into two pigtails. She smiled at Kim
Eomonim before looking at us, eyes wide and curious.
“Eomonim, who are these people?”
“These are the volunteers we have today. They’re going to play with you and your friends.”
“Chincha?”
“Yes.”
“Wahh! I have some new chingu today!”
“Why don’t you introduce yourself to them.”
Eomonim set the girl down, who promptly turned toward us and bowed before standing up straight and smiling cheekily.
“Annyeohasaeyo! Cho neun Lee Young Mi imnida. Nice to meet you!”
I smiled and knelt down to her level, patting her on the head.
“Annyoung Young Mi. It’s nice to meet you. Cho neun Yun Hee imnida.”
“Yun Hee unnie?”
“Neh.”
She looked up toward Jin Ki, and then pointed at him before looking back at me.
“Is this your boyfriend?”
I blushed and looked over at Jin Ki, who knelt down beside me, grinning playfully. He then looked at Young Mi and nodded.
“Yes, I’m her namja chingu, how did you know?”
She put her arm back down and grinned again.
“I just guessed!...what’s your name?”
“Jin Ki. You can call me Jin Ki oppa.”
“Jin Ki oppa, nice to meet you!”
“Deh.”
Jin Ki smiled and tugged on Young Mi’s pigtail playfully. Suddenly, Young Mi grabbed both of our hands and began to tug us toward the other children. Jin Ki and I stood up before we fell face first into the carpet.
“Guys, guys, look who came to play with us!”
Young Mi dragged us in front of the crowd of children sitting haphazardly around the room. Her high but loud voice caught the attention of the children in the room, who looked at her and then to Jin Ki and I curiously.
“Who are they?” one child asked.
Young Mi pulled us closer and answered his question
“He’s Jin Ki and she is Yun Hee. They’re here to play with us.”
“Really?”
“Uh huh!”
Suddenly, a group of girls around Young Mi’s age came toward me and grabbed on my skirt. I knelt down to their level and smiled.
“Yes?”
“Could you play house with us? You could be our mom!”
“Well, I’d be glad too. Of course I can. What’s your name?”
“Soo Jung.”
“Nice to meet you Soo Jung. Who are your friends?”
I glanced around at the other girls who stood by shyly.
“That’s Mi Kyong. She’s three. The girl over there is Sun Kyu, she’s six like me. The one next to her is Eun Jung, and she’s five like Young Mi. The last one is Ha Na, and she’s four.”
“Well, it’s nice to meet all of you. I hope we can be friends.”
They smiled and nodded, then promptly tugged me over to their area where they were playing. Looking behind me, I saw Jin Ki was already preoccupied with the group of boys, showing them how to build something out of legos and building blocks.
Looking back at the girls, I smiled and proceeded to play their game, assuming the role of mom as they asked me too. I remembered playing this game a lot when I was younger at school. The school had a fake house and kitchen, with all the utensils to play with. Playing with the girls brang back a memories, only this time, I actually knew what I was doing when I was “making dinner”.
Once they were tired of playing house, they tugged me over to the bookcase, where other children were sitting. They were looking at books, but I suppose they had no one to read to them. When they saw me coming, their faces brightened and they all ran toward me. I chuckled as multiple books were held out toward me.
“All right, all right. How about I read them all to you.”
“Yay! Yun Hee unnie is going to read a story to us!”
The rest of the children in the room heard he, and quickly dropped their toys before coming to sit around the sofa where I was. Jin Ki followed as well, and took a seat beside me. Facing the children, he clapped his hands together to get their attention.
“Cha! So, what story shall we read first?”
“Cinderella!”
“Robin Hood!”
“Goldilocks and the Three Bears!”
And various other stories were called out. Laughing, we promised that we would read them all, and selected one at random.
“Arasso, we picked Robin Hood first.”
“Yeah!” the boys shouted.
“No fair,” Soo Jung pouted.
“Gwen cha na. Unnie will read Cinderella next, arasso?”
She smiled and nodded.
“Deh!”
As we were choosing another book to read a little later, Jin Ki murmured something to me.
“See, I told you you’d be fine.”
Smiling back, I nodded.
“I know.”
And so, that was how we spent the rest of the afternoon. When dinner time came, Kim Eomonim called us to the dining room, where the table was already set with the help of the other caretakers at the orphanage.
As volunteers and guests, we got to sit at the ends of the long table. Although we couldn’t really talk to each other, I had fun conversing with the children around me. They were so innocent and pure. They all deserved to have a happy family, and hopefully they will be able to in the future.
Once dinner was done, it was time for us to go. Saying bye to every child, we both promised that we would be back again.
With our last waves, we smiled and walked out of the orphanage after bidding Kim Eomonim goodbye. She thanked us and bid us a good evening, insisting that we come back again. Nodding, we scheduled another appointment before leaving.
This event was definitely worth it, and I would have to come again soon.
