Chapter 98. Doubts

Seohyun kissed her baby as carefully as she could but smiled when she realized she need not worry since her little day out obviously got the best of her. Once she was sure Euna was comfortable, she took the baby monitor and headed downstairs. Despite not reporting to work, Yonghwa still spent some time of the day and mostly after they put their baby to bed at night to catch up with the happenings in at work. Typically, he would make plans, study those from the junior architects or just do a lot of paper works. This time, she found him slouched over the plan on his drafting table with a pencil in his hand along with a small notepad on the other.

Sensing her approach, Yonghwa straightened and smiled easily as she made her way to him with his cup of coffee. “I didn’t really want to do this since we need to be up early tomorrow,” she muttered as handed him the cup.

He chuckled and dramatically took a sip, “Hmmm…” when Seohyun clicked her tongue as she leaned her hip on his desk near the drafting table where he stood, he chuckled, “Don’t worry, caffeine has little effect on me.”

“And then you will get sick because of too much caffeine in your system,” she argued back but frowned when he moved closer pushing her to sit on the table. His fingers raked through her hair as cupped the sides of her face. Seohyun tilted her head to the other side when he leaned in for a kiss then murmured, “You’re trying to distract me.”

He laughed, “I’m keeping my promise.”

“Promise?” That instant didn’t occur to her until he managed to plant a kiss on the side of her neck. She shivered remembering that he promised to make her happy tonight. As he continued to move his lips along her skin, it actually slipped her mind that she came here to ‘talk’ until Yonghwa took a step back with that smug grin. Pushing him further back that he ended up sitting on his chair, he laughed out loud when his chair rolled farther back and she couldn’t help but giggle as well.

Seohyun ended up grabbing the arms of the revolving chair and pulled him back closer to the table. She sighed looking over her shoulder to the parchment paper on his drafting table, “Your design?”

“No,” he replied taking his cup again and taking a quick sip, “Just reviewing but it’s part of the projects I oversee.”

She nodded realizing that it was an office plan with a note that it was located in Daegu, “You know, with everything that I learned so far about your firm, I realized that it isn’t that much of a different running a law firm.”

“That’s a good point,” he playfully poked her leg with his foot that had her turning back to him, “Why not work in the firm? We have been talking about opening a legal department. Right now we outsource legal services which hyung handles but since there’s a potential property acquisition projects coming our way, it would really be helpful if we do the legal stuff within the firm.”

Her mind stumbled hearing this proposition because it wasn’t the first ‘job’ offer she had that day. Not only that a job for her in his firm would probably ensure he didn’t want to go through the end of their agreement. Seohyun only wanted to think this way and hoped that it was his intention. Looking back at him, she noticed that look he was giving her. Sighing, she started, “Yuri Unnie told me Oppa wants me to join the firm once it starts.”

Yonghwa stood but walked towards the drafting table and started clearing his table, denying her the expression he was wearing as he spoke, “What did you say?”

She moved to the side to give him more room as he stock papers and placed them in the drawer, “I told her I’ll think about it.”

“So you’re considering it?” Yonghwa asked, his voice soft yet tight.

“I can’t make an abrupt decision, Oppa,” she replied almost realizing his tensed movement. Shaking her head, she added just to draw more emotion from him about this, “What do you think?”

It was then that he spun to face her. His ice almost icy, “Why ask me? It’s up to you.”

“Are you mad?” Seohyun found herself snapping but she managed to keep it down, “I’m asking for your opinion…”

Still not looking at her, he muttered under his breath, “Does it matter?”

“Yes, it does!”

It was only then that he turned to her, his eyes pained as he looked at her. A small smile drew on his lips, “Are we fighting?”

Her heart almost leaped out of her chest seeing the hurt on his face, even the way he stood showed this different side of him— insecure and unsure. Seohyun couldn’t stop the tears then and she just had to cover her face with her hands until she felt his warm touch wrapping around her waist.

“I’m sorry… I didn’t mean—”

She shook her head draping her arms around his shoulders, “If we are, then let’s stop.” Seohyun smiled when she felt that light touch of his lips by the side of her ear. He trailed kisses along her neck, her shoulder, jaw until he captured her lips. Yonghwa urged her until she opened for him and the kiss was fierce, intense like he knew she needed this— that she understood he needed this too.

She was gasping for air when they stopped and found themselves smiling at each other, until the smile erupted into a slight laugh when he winked playfully at her. Yonghwa chuckled brushing his thumb on her lips before resting his hands back on her waist, “So, your family’s firm is opening soon?”

“Yeah,” she nodded with a sigh noting his casual tone, “But my brother will run it since Appa is close to retiring.”

“And they want you to work here? In Seoul?” Yonghwa asked.

She shook her head lightly, “My brother wants that but I’m yet to finish some classes before I can graduate.”

“You don’t need to graduate to work, right?” He frowned, “Does he want you to go back to school?”

“I do want to go back and finish, Oppa,” she smiled nervously because they were actually talking about the future— her plans at least, “But I’ll wait for a bit until I can leave Euna for a couple of hours in a day.”

“Can you take those classes online?” Yonghwa asked stepping away then taking back his seat.

“That’s a big possibility,” she sat on the edge of the table starting to feel a little bit comfortable with the course of their conversation.

“As long as you’re not forced or stressed with what you decide to do, then everything will work out just fine,” he only murmured while retrieving his cup. His eyes twinkled as he looked her over the rim of his cup. Once she gave her one lift of her brow, he drawled, “That surprise that you prepared for me?”

Seohyun laughed out loud because the image of him awkwardly dancing flashed into her. Shaking her head, she listened as he went on telling her their little darling’s exploit with their Appa and Euna Day. It made her happy, of course, but she was both disappointed and relieved when their conversation veered away from the fact that they were close to separating.

However, Seohyun was also disappointed recalling the fact that he didn’t really include himself to her future plans while they were talking about it— not even to suggest taking care of their little girl. But she pushed those bad thoughts aside and keep the light mood on.

In the end, she was thankful that Yonghwa gave her a free pass when she told him that he was too tired to do ‘anything else’ but sleep. But she quietly promised him that she’d make it up on him during their mini-vacation.

That was good enough for them.

~~~~
There it was.
The sight of that envelop made this churning in his stomach feel unbelievably uncomfortable.
Yonghwa carefully pulled it out of the drawer when she walked out of the room.
Somehow, something inside was telling him not to open— that it didn’t matter. That he was Euna’s father with or without any DNA connection. But he couldn’t just seem to forget what Seohyun told him about the biological father. And it nagged him to no end that if his hunches were right, then she lied to him— blatantly.
His body tensed.
This whole process of thinking made him restless.
Yonghwa sighed when he finally unfolded the sheet of paper he apparently took out while he was musing.
Well, he got it out already so no sense of keeping the suspense.
Probability of Paternity.
0%.
