I have two best friends in the world (with alongside six others who I call sisters of course) and they’re the greatest friends you can ever have. They cheer me up whenever I’m done and the interesting thing is that even though they’re complete polar opposites, they seem to mend together well.

Huang Zitao—he was a transfer from China and when he entered our class that day, he seemed very laid-back. His jacket was ed and his white shirt wasn’t tucked in. His backpack was slung over one shoulder and he just stood there, introducing himself in Korean. He was interesting since he just looked so stoic, but as I observed him walking to the empty seat in front of me I couldn’t help but notice the small panda plush that’s attached to the zipper of his bag. As I let out a giggle, the guy sitting next to me couldn’t help but glance at me.

Do Kyungsoo—that was the one who was sitting next to me. My best friend since kindergarten. He was always there for me: whenever I fell down, whenever I cried, whenever I ran over to his house (we’re next door neighbors), he was the one that was always there for me. As we grew up we were always attached to each other and people would immediately recognize us as best friends. We’re both similar in so many ways, yet have our differences to keep us interested in each other. He had a relationship in middle school which kind of made us drift apart, but after he found out that she was only using him to have his friend pay attention to her, he broke up with her. I comforted him that night he broke up with her and I could tell he was devastated. However, he gradually got better and we were the best duo out there again.

The two of them met about a week after Zitao transferred. Even though I’m usually not the one to confront people first, I had to introduce myself to him since he needed tutoring in English. It was hard for him especially since Korean isn’t his native tongue—so it was like he had to learn two languages at once. He’s actually a very hyper and nice person if you really talk to him. He’s not that cold-hearted guy you would see in class which astonished me. One day in the library, I was tutoring Zitao and Kyungsoo was hanging out with his friends—or so I thought he did. He came inside the library and sat right next to me, opening up his English textbook pretending that Zitao wasn’t in front of me. I just looked at him and then at Zitao, who was also looking at Kyungsoo. I introduced both of them to each other and they were very friendly to each other!

From then on, we became a trio. My other six friends were in different classes and grades, so I couldn’t really confront them as much as those two.

Hong Yookyung…what can I say about her?

She’s angelic looking. She’s pretty, beautiful, she’s ideal.

The way her straight brown hair drops down her shoulders and how her bangs just hangs down whenever her head is facing her work. She has this royal aura whenever she does something. When I first looked at her the first day I walked into class, she immediately caught my attention. She looked so pure and innocent that I felt the need to protect her. If she was a princess, I would definitely be up to take that position at a knight.

Walking towards the empty seat in front of her, that was when I first heard her voice—that light airy giggle. She couldn’t catch me looking at her since her eyes were shaped as crescents, but when I looked at her from up close—man, she was beautiful.

English was my toughest subject especially since I’m still learning Korean. I was expecting the teacher to at least cut me off some slack since I’m still trying to adjust to this new area as well, but what can I expect from one of the top high schools in Seoul? Instead, my teacher set me up for tutoring in the library. I had no idea who my tutor was and I was definitely not looking forward to it.

However, when I walked towards a table, there she was. With an English textbook and workbook open in front of her, I could feel a smile spreading across my face. She was my tutor—and I was thrilled to actually start learning English. As she looked up at me, she stood up and bowed politely, a shy smile beaming at me. After introducing ourselves, we sat down across from each other and I could feel this awkward aura around us. When we took a small break from studying, I grabbed my bag and placed it on the table—another laugh escaped her lips. She noticed the panda attached to my bag and then I suddenly realized—she was laughing on my first day because of my panda.

“Do you like pandas too?” I asked.

Yookyung just stared at me and nodded, trying to contain herself from laughing too loud. “I do—but, I wouldn’t have expected you to like them too!” I raised an eyebrow and she continued speaking. “You just seemed really tough on the outside—but when I saw your panda, I had a feeling you had a soft spot!”

“Well—I can tell you this, I am a very soft person,” I replied back with an elbow resting on the table. My hand held onto the pencil and pointed at Yookyung, a playful grin spreading across my face. “I like taking walks along the beach—alone.”

That broke the ice—all because of a panda.

Just when we were getting along just fine throughout our first week of meeting, a guy had to enter the picture. Yookyung and I were studying again and this guy randomly sat next to Yookyung. He kept talking to her like I was just invisible. We met eyes and locked. I could see in his eyes how much he liked her—but that didn’t stop my feelings that happened throughout our months as friends.

Yes, Kyungsoo and I get along, but Yookyung just looks so angelic that I won’t let my guard down just because they’ve been friends longer.

I’m sorry, Kyungsoo…but the heart wants what the heart wants.

Ever since kindergarten, Yookyung and I have been the best of friends. We played with each other in the playground, I helped her heal her wounds when she fell down, and we were so carefree. I saw her as a friend that I could keep for a lifetime.

However, during middle school I was so close from not having her as a friend anymore. I was blinded by first love in my last year of middle school. I only fell for her good looks—and now that I look at it, she reminded me of Yookyung. Within three months of our relationship, I realized that she was only going for my friend and was using me. I felt devastated, heart-broken, perplexed on the whole situation. I went to Yookyung’s house that night and told her everything that happened. She was comforting, attentive, and gentle with her words.

Ever since that day, I only aimed to look for a good heart, a nice personality, and not care about looks at all.

However, Yookyung had that whole package and I noticed that in high school. I spent every day with her simply because we were always in the same class with each other. Although people would call us friends publicly, they’d always come up to me and ask, “When are you going to ask Yookyung out?” or “Are you and Yookyung a thing yet?”

I would always answer with, “Let time tell what will happen.” Though honestly, I’ve wanted to ask her out ever since winter break of our first year of high school.

The way she talks comfortably to me to the way she teases me and playfully hits me—it all captured my heart. It wasn’t about her looks or what she was like on the outside; it was her raw personality—what was really inside her. The word beautiful doesn’t mean she’s just a pretty looking woman—it meant she had a beautiful soul. A beautiful heart.

A beautiful everything.

However, it was when Zitao came in the picture that slowly ruined everything. He came in our last year as a transfer student and when I heard Yookyung giggle beside me I knew this was going to be trouble. That’s why I took no regrets of interrupting their tutoring session. I felt envious of Zitao—Yookyung quickly warmed up to him and I really didn’t like it. I mean, we get along, but I had a strong feeling that he liked Yookyung. I just know that our reasons of liking her were different.

I couldn’t help it one day…It was cloudy, breezy, spring was here. While she was in charge of watering the plants, I walked up to her with my hands stuffed in my pocket.

“Yookyung,” I whispered as I stood next to her. She smiled warmly at me, but still kept her attention on the flowers, watering them with care. “Yes, Kyungsoo?” She replied while kneeling down to fix one of the flowers.

I’m so nervous—this was totally on impulse—

“You know how we were friends ever since kindergarten?”

She laughed softly and stood up, looking at me directly, “Of course I know, silly.”

“Have you ever thought...” I couldn’t say it. I would be embarrassed if she didn’t say yes to my question. I paused and she just looked at me with her deep brown eyes. Those eyes that open up to her soul—it killed me. “That we could be more than friends?” Whoa, I said, I can’t believe it.

She just looked at me and smiled lightly, shrugging lightly. “Why?”

I took a deep breath and stared at her, biting on my bottom lip before speaking softly. “Yookyung, I know this isn’t extravagant for you and I know you deserve those type of things, but—‘” I paused again and she stood facing me. Her eyes widened and her eyebrows were slightly raised. All I could do was look at her lovingly.

“Without ever noticing from the start…I’ve always liked you…I just couldn’t find myself to admit it because we were just best friends and I always thought we were going to stay like that. I just…really like you, Hong Yookyung. I like you for you.”

Placing her watering can down she smiled brightly at me and took a step closer, wrapping her arms around my middle. I couldn’t help but smile with mixed emotions of happiness, relief, and nervousness. I took her closer into the embrace and closed my eyes. I knew from that hug that she also had the same feelings as me and I couldn’t have been any happier.

However, when I opened my eyes I saw a figure turn around from the school building. I caught a glimpse of the bag and saw a panda figure swinging in the air. I knew exactly who it was and I pursed my lips.

Zitao, I’m sorry…I promise you’ll find someone soon.
