The male walks up the stairs of the apartment complex, his hands stuffed in his pockets with his earphones in each ear. He hums softly to the music as the night settles in, a light breeze hitting against him. As he makes his way to his floor, he slides his hand over the railing while tapping his fingers to the rhythm playing.

Making his way to his apartment, he opens the door and slips his shoes off as he walks inside, closing the door behind him. “Finally home,” He mutters to himself as he places his bag down by the door, walking towards the kitchen to grab himself a cup of water.

The male has been working continuously as a waiter at a restaurant while keeping up with his dancing for a competition soon. Work has gotten to him that he’s rarely had a lot of rest. He walks towards the small balcony outside and gets a small view of the sights beyond the city lights. Leaning forward, he leans his forearms on the railing as he takes a small sip from his cup.

Sounds of cars running, the distant laughs of children from the neighboring apartments, and the slurred shouts from intoxicated people down on the streets overtake the music playing in his ears. Taking off his earphones he sighs softly and closes his eyes, taking in all the sounds.

However, a distinct sound of sniffling enters his right ear. He knits his eyebrows as he thinks that he’s probably hearing wrong. Unfortunately, his ears weren’t wrong. He turns his head and sees a young female sitting on a black chair, a cup lying on the small table beside the female. Her brown hair sits on each side of her shoulders, some strands of hair hiding her face.

The male couldn’t help but stare long at her. Despite the tears rolling down her cheeks, he’s transfixed on her beauty. Her arms are crossed loosely across her chest, her feet resting on the edge of the chair as her knees are aligned to her chest as well. He takes light footsteps towards the other end of the railing, his body fixed to her direction, “Um…excuse me…”

She looks up slowly and gasps softly, immediately wiping her tears as she plants her feet on the ground. “I-I’m sorry. I’ll go inside,” She announces as she grabs onto the skinny arm rests on her chair, starting to stand up. However, the male holds his hand out even though he’s only grabbing onto the thin cold air. “No, I didn’t mean to tell you to stop,” He calls out as the female slowly sits back down.

“Are you—the new neighbor?” He continues to talk as she nods in response, not replying back. A week ago, he received a notice that a new neighbor will be moving in next door. The last neighbor he had was loud, annoying, and obnoxious. Every single night, his neighbor would bring alcohol and laugh loudly in the still night. Because of him, the male would have sleepless nights and lived off caffeine. He thanked God that his neighbor left and this time, he wanted to really know his new neighbor.

The male his lips and looks at her, “Do you want to talk about it?” She stares at him and hides her lips, looking down as she places her hands on her lap, “Maybe later on…”

He nods as he knew it’d be too soon for a girl to open up to him. He inhales softly and cracks a thin smile, “I’m Luhan though.” She stares at him at somewhat disbelief. She was crying a while ago and he noticed, but he’s pretending like this never happened. She couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle, “Bomi. Yoon Bomi.”

He raises an eyebrow and looks at her. Was she really just laughing? He hangs his head down slightly and lets out a small laugh in return, “Well, Bomi. I can already tell you that you’re much better than my last neighbor.”

“Oh? Why is that?” Bomi asks as Luhan starts revealing his story of the intoxicated neighbor. The two slowly starts warming up to each other, laughs being exchanged here and there. Luhan leans forward on the railing as he wraps his hands around the now empty glass, a huge laugh escaping his lips from hearing her story.

“Yeah…The farting incident will forever be in my mind,” Bomi laughs embarrassingly as she covers her cheek with both hands. Luhan tilts his head to the side before a huge smile glues to his face. He hasn’t heard such a story like that in months. Something about Bomi made him like her presence. She’s funny, kind, and cute. Why would such a girl be crying?

Throughout the months, Luhan and Bomi grew closer. Their nights out in the balconies are now familiar to them. Their conversations would echo lightly through the cold summer nights. One night, Luhan invited Bomi over to his balcony. Luhan is now able to see her face clearly. He did stand beside her a few times, but they now had the world to themselves. They sat down across from each other on the small chairs, a table filling in the gap. Two beer cans are settled on the table and Luhan reaches out to grab the can first.

The talks about their day, work, and past were definitely brought up in their conversations. Bomi takes a small sip out of her beer and hisses quietly; resting her elbow on the table with the beer can in her hand. Luhan takes a huge sip and places his can down on the table, staring at her, “Bomi—when we first met—why were you crying?”

Bomi’s eyes widen slightly as the question hits her. She sighs softly and puts her can down, the sound echoing. “My best friend and I were roommates at another apartment complex,” She murmurs as she looks at the can, her finger tracing the top of the can, “What we didn’t know was that we were in love…”

Luhan raises an eyebrow and purses his lips. For some reason, he felt a little jealous that her ex-roommate found her earlier than he did. “But it was a one-sided love,” She continues as she lets out a small laugh, “Originally, that apartment was his. He offered me to stay since I had nowhere to do. However, after a year of my unrequited love, he found someone else. He told me, ‘Can you move out? I’m taking my girlfriend in now.’ It hurt me so much that with instinct I just slapped him on the cheek.” She hangs her head down and lets out a hot breath.

“I packed everything without a word and left. I decided to finally get my own apartment so I ended up here,” She picks up her beer and gulps down the rest, tears starting to form in her dark brown eyes. “I was so stupid. Maybe I should have confessed first or something, but I was afraid. I should have took the risk, but I was a coward,” She covers her forehead with her hand and shakes her head.

Luhan, who is slightly intoxicated, stares at her in disbelief. He points at her and shakes his head, “You are not a coward, not one at all.” Luhan is able to control his alcohol so he’s able to at least understand what Bomi is saying. However, Bomi on the other hand couldn’t handle her alcohol.

Her eyes drop in laziness, her head spinning in different directions, and her feelings continuously pouring out of like a bullet train—that was the intoxicated Bomi. The tears roll down her cheeks as she continues to talk about him, “Lee Howon…A name I will never forget.” She lays her head down on the table as her hand covers the top of her can, her eyes closed.

Luhan sighs softly and observes her, one leg crossed over the other. Her face features were gentle, her back heaving up and down lightly. He stands up, feeling a little wobbly; however, he carefully carries her bridal style and brings her inside his apartment. He walks into his room and tucks her into his bed, removing the extra strands of hair in front of her face. “I’ll be your new best friend, Bomi,” He murmurs as he rubs her forehead gently with his thumb before walking out of his room.

He lands on his couch and closes his eyes, one leg propped up slightly as one arm rests on his forehead. Soon, the male is off into dreamland.

“Bomi—Yah, Yoon Bomi,” A voice trails inside the apartment as Luhan stirs on the couch. “Bomi,” The voice echoes as Luhan turns to the side, falling off the couch with a thud. He groans softly and hisses, rubbing his arms, “Ugh…” He stands up and holds his head to get stable. He walks out of the apartment and finds another male standing in front of Bomi’s door

“Can I help you?” Luhan asks as the male stares at him. He stuffs his hands in his pockets and mutters, “Do you know if Bomi is home?” An aura surrounds the stranger as Luhan furrows his eyebrow. “Are you by chance, Lee Howon?” He asks as he crosses his arms.

The male cracks his head to the side and nods, “Yeah, I am…” He lets out a small laugh and purses his lips, “Well, Bomi is sleeping right now. She crashed out last night after drinking.”

Howon blinks and stares at the new acquaintance, “Do you know Bomi well?”

“Well enough to know about you,” Luhan beams as he stretches his back by popping out his chest. “Can I just talk to her?” Howon asks as the other shakes his head. “Howon, do you understand what you did?” Luhan fires as the other’s eyes widen.

“After she slapped me, yeah…” He looks down at the ground and rubs the back of his neck, feeling guilty. “She’s going to move on, I know she will,” Luhan stares at him and clenches his jaw, “And I’d like to thank you.”

Howon takes a step towards him and looks directly at him in the eye, “Don’t tell you’re going to steal Bomi away from me.” The other lets out a small dry laugh, “Away from you? You have a girlfriend”

“She’s my best friend,” Howon announces. “Was,” A groggy light voice says as it surprises both of the boys. The door widens, revealing Bomi with her hair slightly frizzed. “Bomi,” Howon whispers as he looks at her, seeing how tired she is.

“You were my best friend, Howon. Now, you’re just a past first love,” Bomi states firmly as she looks away. “Goodbye, Howon,” She whispers. Howon’s mouth drops as he tries to talk, freezing.

Luhan walks inside and closes the door in front of Howon. He stares at her, her eyes starting to water once again. With instinct, he wraps his arms around her shoulders, rubbing her back soothingly, “It’ll be alright, Bomi. I’ll be here.”

The female buries her face in his chest, closing her eyes, “Thank you, Luhan. Thank you so much for listening and being there. I really like having you as a friend.”

And hopefully more. Luhan thinks as he closes his eyes, swaying them side to side slowly.
