Taekwoon sighed, leaning against the wall and trying to will himself to stop sweating. He loved working in the royal stables, but not on hot days like today. The heat made even breathing feel like a work out and it made the stables smell even worse than normal which made working in them a struggle. All he wanted to do was to go back to his room in the lower part of the castle where it was cooler. He might curse the lower temperature during the winter months, but it was a god send in the summer.
“Taekwoon,” Sanghyuk called out, entering the stables with quick steps and startling Taekwoon.
“Your highness,” Taekwoon greeted, smiling softly as his childhood friend, love, and prince, “what brings you here?”
“We’ve talked about this,” Sanghyuk scowled slightly, “you can call me by my name when we’re alone. And I’m here because I want to go for a ride, just the two of us.”
“Your hi-Sanghyuk,” Taekwoon tried to protest, “I can’t do that. I have work. And you have lessons, right?”
“Not anymore,” Sanghyuk grinned, taking Taekwoon by the arm and leading him away, “I asked Wonsik to get two horses ready. Now come on, I have something I want to show you.”
Taekwoon allowed himself to be taken away, smiling at how happy Sanghyuk looked. They wouldn’t be able to do this for much longer after all. He’d heard the other servants talking about weddings and brides and political alliances. He’d always known that it was coming. He’d always known that princes like Sanghyuk couldn’t love who they wanted. As much as he wanted Sanghyuk, as much as Sanghyuk wanted him…….
A prince did not have the freedom to love who they wanted, to be with whom their hearts belonged to.
So Taekwoon would allow for moments like this, would enjoy them and commit every second of them to memory. Because it wouldn’t be long before that’s all this was, just a happy memory.
A/N: that’s one thing I hate about the “isn’t it great to be a prince/princess” idea. It’s actually not. Princes and princesses were just political pawns, married off for alliances and power.
