Miss. Trouble

“Leerang you’ll have to hurry, the chauffeur is already waiting.” the said girl couldn’t help but to sigh, as the mirror in front reflected her dressed up self. It was a special day for her mother, one when the older woman could show off her wealth. In other terms, a huge party where Leerang wouldn’t feel at home. “I don’t understand why I have to follow each and every time.” she stood up and straightened the dress, the piece of clothing cost more than what her father earned in a month.

“Leerang.” a frown became evident on her face at the thought of what her father would occupy himself with that same evening and night. It wasn’t exactly unusual for the older male to drink. The only problem was that he, sometimes, drank a bit too much. “LEERANG.” alright, alright. “I’m coming.” a hurried look in the mirror and she headed downstairs, the high heels her mother had bought greeted Leerang the second she entered the hall.

“Honey, can’t you be a little more excited, and please, behave today. A lady shouldn’t talk about how cool white sharks are or that a snail can sleep for three years. In fact, I don’t understand where you get all that from. Is your idiot to a father the one telling you all that crap?” with a roll of her eyes she listened to the older woman rant about how useless her father were. It hadn’t always been like that though. Leerang couldn’t even remember when it had all started. However, that specific day was one she would never forget. Apparently had her mother found another man, someone who actually did something else than just consumed alcohol. Plus, he was rich. The amount of money the girl’s step dad earned each month was a number her father could only dream of.

“I’ll behave, and no. Dad’s not the one telling me that.” Leerang wobbled slightly as she tried to balance herself on the high heels. It was safe to say that she wasn’t that used to wearing such shoes. Her usual footwear was a pair of converse. “Haven’t I told you to practice walking in those?” and there they went again, her mother complaining about the things Leerang hadn’t done. But what was she supposed to say, ‘I’m sorry mom, but I hate high heels and I don’t even want to attend those parties’.

Yeah, the older woman would only have a fit and it would all end with that the girl took the subway home to her father. The fact that Leerang preferred to be at her dad’s was an ordeal her mother disliked, no, despised. Being the only child was definitely not easy in those sorts of situations, especially since she wasn’t exactly known as a girly girl. Dresses, high heels and makeup, all that wasn’t her. No, Leerang’s fashion was so much simpler than that.

“I forgot okay, there’s just a lot going on in school.” it wasn’t a complete lie. Senior year was tougher than she could’ve imagined. Homework took up a lot of her free time, and then there was all those tests at school. At one point had Leerang even considered dropping out. Though, those thoughts were briskly interrupted by the images of what her mother would do if finding out. “Well, I hope you’re keeping your grades up so that you can get into Seoul National University.” another sigh rolled off her tongue, Leerang had no desire to attend SNU. She had her eyes on another university, one that she actually wanted to attend. But to tell the woman that would be like asking for death penalty.

Without answering did she head out to the limousine. Even looking at it made the girl uneasy. Huge mansions, expensive cars and luxury clothes. All material things that in the end meant nothing.

The phone of hers couldn’t even help to ease the anxiousness she felt, as the electronic device had been banned to tag along by her mother. All in all, Leerang had no one to distract herself with. Not even friends, mainly because she had none. The problem was that the rich kids weren’t exactly her type and the ones living in the same neighborhood as her dad saw Leerang as just that, a rich kid. One that got everything she pointed at. But it hadn’t always been like that though. She’d also had a best friend, one she spent all her days with, in school and after school. Unfortunately did all that change when they had to move to the US because of her dad’s work. Something that resulted in that Leerang was left alone. Not long after that had her own parents separated, and the whole getting-new-friends weren’t as easy anymore.

Perhaps it was time to try. Who knew, maybe she would manage to get a new friend, or friends.

Half an hour later the girl found herself abandoned and awkward. The smile upon her lips were just about as fake as the s the woman in front of her had. Leerang’s mother had, the second they arrived, told her to go find someone around her own age. It hadn’t been hard, not really. The only difficult part was that she would have to walk up to them and introduce herself. It was an ordeal that she’d always found hard and the girl couldn’t help but to feel out of place as she stood there. High society parties were not really her thing.

“Ugh, why can’t someone just kill me already.” her shoulders deflated and she wished no more than to go home. Leerang could honestly not understand why her mother was so persistent in always bringing her along. The girl had stated more than once that she disliked these sort of events, and yet, she had to attend. It was as if her mother did it on purpose to torture the said girl. Speaking of which, the woman stepped up and placed herself right before Leerang, “don’t just stand there. Go mingle with other people okay? Wouldn’t it be nice to find some girl friends who you could go shopping with?” in difference to her mother was Leerang not that obsessed with fashion and clothes. It wasn’t like she loved spending several hours down at the brand name stores downtown.

“Maybe.” there was no reason for her to start a conversation about how much she disliked being there, as that would only end up in a fight. Instead did Leerang let her fake smile remain, “I’ll go find someone to talk to, okay.” it was with slightly unsteady steps that the girl walked up to two girls. Their eyes met hers for a brief second, and that before they scanned her appearance. It was obvious that they were judging her, they wanted to know if Leerang was worth their time.

“How did you managed to get a hold of those heels?” instinctively did her gaze fall upon the high heels she was wearing, to her, they didn’t look special. “My mom bought them.” the two girls nodded their heads, and Leerang felt a little hope lit within. “So, do you have any favourite brands?” and just like that did all the hope vanish into thin air. Brands and such weren’t really important to the girl. If the clothes looked good and they were comfortable then it was more than enough for her. They didn’t need to cost several million won for her to be satisfied. “Converse?” distaste was written all over their faces, they could probably not even believe that she’d said that. But converse was Leerang’s favorite shoes. They met all the criteria she had, comfortable,  looked good and they weren’t too pricey either.

A minute of complete silence followed and the girl understood that the chance of making some new friends had disappeared. “Anyways, it was nice talking to you.” a small bow and she escaped from there. “This is the absolute last time I’m doing this.” Leerang heaved a sigh, never again would she let herself be dragged to such events, as they were not suited for her personality. “Hm, it’s unusual to see a girl not having fun here.” slightly taken aback by the male voice she glanced up, his eyes met hers and she felt something stir inside.

“Sorry?” flustered by how good looking he was Leerang let her gaze wander away. “Well, doesn’t girls and women like these sort of parties?” most of them probably did. Though, Leerang was an exception. To look like a living doll, with a dress, makeup smeared all over her face and then high heels that were impossible to walk around with, was not exactly her ideal fashion. “Probably, but I don’t.” a smile upon the boy’s lips distracted her for a second. In fact, she couldn’t even see the amusement with the situation. To go around and flaunt about how much money one had was only embarrassing. “Let’s do something else then.” Leerang’s heart jumped in shock when he grasped onto her wrist. The action was not one she’d expected.

“Ehm, could you -,” the contact of his skin against her own made the girl slightly uncomfortable. Leerang was uncertain when it came to boys. She had no previous experience when it came to love. “Ohh, I see, you already got a boyfriend.” Her mother appeared before she got the chance to explain herself, “Baekhyun, I didn’t see you before.” the boy bowed his head to greeted the older woman, “I’ve been with my friends out in the garden until just now.” her mother smiled, showing off her pearly whites, “well, I hope you’ll take good care of my daughter then.” the boy seemed a bit taken aback by the information. He’d probably not expected for Leerang to be the daughter of the woman that was married to the CEO of Nongshim. “Of course.” with that being said did her mother disappear back to whatever she was up to. “Come on, I’ll show you where the real fun is.” the Baekhyun guy pulled her along out to the garden, thus totally ignoring Leerang’s statement of wanting him to let go of her hand.

Indeed, it was much livelier there. Teenagers were chatting and having fun whilst music was pumping out through massive speakers. “Look, Baekhyun managed to get a girl after all.” she felt incredible uneasy as several pair of eyes darted their way. “Don’t bother, they’re just trying to be funny.” Leerang gulped, as she took in the appearance of everyone around her. Brands, brands and brands. Everything was a battle of how much money one could spend.

In the midst of it all did her gaze fall upon a boy. His striking features caused Leerang’s heart to flutter. The whole admiring part though, was abruptly cut short when the said boy stared straight at her. She ducked away, obviously embarrassed by her own actions. The only thing was that she’d totally forgotten about the fact that she was wearing heels, and the edge of the pool was apparently a lot closer than Leerang had first expected. All in all, she tripped over her own two feet's and pulled Baekhyun down with her into the water. A loud splash could be heard as the liquid engulfed them.

Laughter was the first thing that greeted the girl when she managed to get her head above the surface. She felt so humiliated, and the boy didn’t really ease that feeling when he emerged from the water with a frown plastered on his face. The Baekhyun guy gave her a quick look before he swam over and climbed up the ladder. “, my Armani suit is all destroyed now.” the girl was extremely sorry for what’d happened, it had never been Leerang’s intention to ruin his suit.

“Do you know how much it costs to buy a new one?” Baekhyun barked, he was utterly pissed off, as the suit itself was customized specially for him. “Sorry.” she couldn’t understand why it mattered that much. It was just a piece of clothing. “You’re sorry, yeah I’ -.” another male voice joined in, “Baekhyun.” Leerang’s cheeks flushed a deep shade of red when noticing that it was the handsome boy, the one that’d caused them to end up in the pool, that had spoken.

Maybe she’d been wrong. Maybe not all rich kids were bad-mannered and prideful. “She probably just wanted an excuse for you to take off your clothes.” what. Scrap her previous sentence. All of them were just the same.

Chapter 72: Wow. Awesome story. Though I wonder whatever became of Leerang's mother? I bet she probably disowned Leerang for doing everything against her wishes. I'm glad that Leerang stayed with Kris and helped to get his life back on track. Great story.
