Chapter 43

5 Pieces' Magnae (5)

Hannah is uncomfortable when sitting down with her members for an interview. There are a lot of people sitting in front of them, behind the cameras and interviewer. It is always like that when doing interviews, so it isn’t that she is unused to it. The reason she is uncomfortable is the reason to the interview. It’s the last week of 2011, and the group is doing an interview to talk about the year that is coming to an end. Hannah is probably the only one regretting that the year is over. Half the year she was in school, the other half she has been working, but even if the second half was so amazingly great she still doesn’t want the year 2011 to come to an end.

“What were your thoughts of releasing your second album, with a different concept than what you were used to?” the interviewer asks.

“Ever since our debut we have wanted to try all kind of concepts. Before we always had kind of charismatic songs so though our second album was a huge challenge, we had a lot of fun both making it and promoting it. Honestly, we did have our doubts about the concept since we haven’t really tried the cute concept before, but the positive response we got once it was released made us able to pull it off,” Maria answers.

“We were very excited about the album, wondering how our fans would think and we learned a lot from it,” Julia also says.

The interviewer asks: “Had you expected such a positive response for the album when it was released?”

“Definitely not”, “I don’t think so” – “Yes”, “of course”. The different answers come from all the members and the girls’ looks at each other in surprise.

“You were the first one saying it would be a hit,” Carolina laughs and points at Emelia who had said no.

The interviewer and staff all smiles when the girls are sorting it out on their own.

“While making the album our thoughts went back and forth, so at times we were all saying it would reach number one while at other times we were doubting about it. But I don’t think anyone of us expected the album to be given such a response,” Carolina answers and smiles when Emelia irritatingly hits her on the leg. “We are very happy about it because there are so many people enjoying listening to our music.”

“Are you satisfied with your title song [I Love You]?”

It takes a second before anyone answers. The smile the girls gives by the question should make people wonder what it means. “When we first read the lyrics, we actually thought it was so not our style,” Maria answers and Hannah smiles.

“Once we started the recording of it we were actually satisfied with how it sounded,” Carolina adds. “It has been different to have such a girly song, so I don’t think until we saw the response from our fans we actually felt it was 5 Pieces style, just a different than we are used to.”

“Some members composed songs for the album, how was that?”

“I sang a solo song for this album named [Sometimes], which I also composed. Before I also composed a song for our mini album last year,” Carolina starts to answer. “All of us are interested in song-writing and composing, but it is very hard to get your own songs included in the albums, so we are practicing to show more of our own talents for our fans.”

“I worked together with Park Hyekyung to compose one of the songs in the album,” Hannah says. “Like Carolina said, all of us are very interested in writing, so I hope we can get more chances to show it in the future.”

“5 Pieces have accomplished a lot in 2011. What do you remember the most?”

“There are so many things…” Julia answers and the others agree. “Beside from our cute concept, I think all of us remembers getting awards. We got award at MAMA, and we were very surprised over it. I think it shows how well we have been doing and improved, so that is something I remember the most.”

“It was also our graduation,” Maria remembers.

Emelia gives a sudden smirk by those words and Hannah laughs, asking what that means. ”We have finished school,” Emelia answers in her creepy and happy way.

“I remember our week in Europe,” Carolina says. “We got to visit a lot of beautiful cities, meet so many different people and we also got to perform on Idol in Sweden. Though the visits were very short it left a big impression on us, so we really want to go back and spend more time at the places we visited.”

“We have done a lot,” Hannah nods.

“Europe is very memorable,” Maria remembers. “There were really so many different people. But if you talk about far away, we also performed in New York and were on Ellen DeGeneres Show”

“Ah! I had forgotten that…” Carolina looks surprised and Emelia asks how she could’ve forgotten something like that.

“We have debuted in Japan too,” Emelia then adds.

“That was fun,” Maria smiles.

They all look like they mentions something and then dreams away to the memories. The interviewer asks them about their thoughts of getting the award at MAMA not long ago.

“When we were told we would get to perform at MAMA in Singapore, we were deeply moved because just to be able to perform at such a big music award show means a lot for us,” Maria answers. “And we told ourselves that even if we won’t win, we won’t be disappointed because it was such an experience. When we were watching the other artists get awards we were so happy for them because we know how much they have worked for it.”

“People might think it is a lie when we say we were happy to see the other artists win, but when we were sitting there and saw the people we have met backstage and seen perform for a few years, it makes us really happy,” Julia says.

“We hadn’t expected to get an award,” Emelia answers honestly. “So when we received the award Artist Of The Year, there are still no words of how to express how thankful we are.”

“A lot of people took notice of one specific person that Maria mentioned at the MAMA,” the interviewer starts to ask. “Do you know who I mean?”

The girls all knows, since it is only one person Maria mentioned at MAMA while thanking people that people have been talking a lot about on the internet. It is Hannah who will answer. She glances down once, again remembering that he just a while ago went through another surgery.

“Last year I was at the hospital for a while, and the one who kept me company during that time was a boy named Kyung Ho. He is really positive and when it was tough for me he kept my hopes up,” Hannah answers and she almost looks angry when holding in the tears.

“We have a lot to thank him for,” Carolina smiles. Hannah smiles too and nods when Julia takes her hand.

“Ever since then he has been like a little brother to me,” Hannah says and finish it.

They are asked what they want to accomplish in the future, the staff and interviewer also noticing that there are nothing more to be told in the interview about the boy.

“I think we have done a lot of new things in 2011, like visiting new countries and meet fans from worlds we haven’t met before,” Hannah answers. “So in the future we would want to visit more places and fans around the world. But to hold our own concert in Tokyo Dome has been a dream of ours for a long time.”

The other members agree. They had all watched Japanese artists perform at Tokyo Dome, so they wants to do the same, whether it’s in a year or ten, they still want to do it.

“In the future, I want to have a 5 Pieces concert in America,” Emelia says. “But I think what we mostly want to do in the future is to keep doing what we have done until now, perform and make music people can enjoy listen to. We also want to try a lot of other different things.”

“SM Entertainment spoke about 5 Pieces as representatives for ‘music from the world, for the world’ not long ago. Do you feel a kind of responsibility when hearing that?” the interviewer asks.

“I think we are really honoured about everything we have learnt and achieved these few years. To have people around the world enjoying our music makes us really want to do better, and since there now are people enjoying our music we feel that we are doing very well. It gives us a slight burden to be praised so highly when we still have so much to learn, but we will work hard so we one day can accept all the praises,” Maria answers like a leader.

“With a lot of rookie groups debuting, 5 Pieces has become a senior group now.”

“We are also rookies,” Maria says as the girls all laughs. “To see so many groups debuting and greeting us with their young faces makes me feel really old. In Sweden, I’m not even twenty yet! To see all the juniors greet us at the music programs, we still think it is awkward and I think most of them are a little afraid of us. We give off that feeling.”

“No, we don’t,” Hannah says.

“Sure we do. Have you looked at Emelia when juniors greet us? She looks like she will eat them up any second,” Maria says.

“Ya, aren’t you mixing me with yourself now? Whenever a boy-group greets us you are drooling,” Emelia bites back.

“Don’t fight,” Hannah says when Maria talks back. Her voice is barely heard though.

“I drooled ONCE! And that was because their manager was eating behind them,” Maria defends herself, causing laughter from the staff. She then turns to the camera. “Carolina is actually scaring them away too; she acts cute too much.”

“Hey…” Carolina pouts.

“See! See!” Maria points at her and both Julia and Hannah actually laugh at how light her voice became. “That face scares them away!”

It is funny, everyone must admit that. With Carolina’s pouting face and Maria pointing at her over Emelia, saying the cute face expression scares the juniors.

The interview goes on. “It’s been three years since 5 Pieces debuted, how has it been for you during this time?”

Carolina is still pouting over what Maria told her, and Hannah and Julia are both giggling in their own world. So Emelia answers. “Everyone knows that we were totally clueless when we debuted. During our time as 5 Pieces we have learned a lot of things as time passed, from seniors, juniors, teachers and fans. A lot of people have helped us learn more about what we are doing, what we want to do and who we are.”

Maria keeps on: “We are proud over all our up and downs for the past three years, and even if we have made our fans and each other worry, we don’t regret much. We want to look forward and do a lot of more things and we are open for transformations so we can show a lot of different sides to our fans.”

“What are your plans for 2012?”

“For 2012 we will, just like 2011, do a lot of new things. We will start our first tour, ‘Moon Child’ and see our fans through the tour around Asia. For the first half of the year will do a lot of things individually. Emelia will make her Japanese debut as a solo singer, while also others of us will have solo activities in Korea,” Carolina answers. She can’t say who will have solo activities in Korea because so far only Maria have been confirmed for it; Hannah will probably also have it, but it hasn’t been confirmed.

“Something special will happen for me too,” Hannah smiles at her members and they all happily joins in her smiling. “I won’t say what yet, but in a few months you will get to know more.” It is about her book release. She was told to not say anything about it, but to create some wonders about it is always fun – it was Emelia’s idea.

“Please look forward to all of our different activities for 2012,” Maria ends up saying.

The interview is over and the staff thanks the girls for taking all the time to answer the questions in their honest way. Hannah is fast to pick up her cell phone, just as a bad habit. She sends a text to Jonghyun, not knowing who else to send to, and writes that she talked about Kyung Ho in the interview. It takes some time, but he replies to her.
